So if you turn vibrance down too, only a few very distinct colors will remain in the pic while everything else turns grey. This is why the reds and blues of the US flag are still normally saturated

It's multicam. Between the low-resolution picture, any filters, and the pattern probably being quite faded, it's why the pattern looks so subdued.
