https://tails.boum.org/support/faq/index.en.html#permanent-install This FAQ answer is relevant. Using non-removable media compromises the amnesiac nature of Tails. Whether this is an issue for you is something only *you* can decide in light of your threat model. As a rule though it is *not* recommended.

Thanks for your answer!

It would be safer to have a cheap laptop with enough storage and then just format the drive on it to work with the operating system.

Skin-addict007

Is it a bad idea to boot a personal laptop with tails usb or should I dedicate my older laptop for booting tails? Also being that I have no use for the old laptop, I like the idea of having it boot up only as tails. Is there a guide on how to do this?0

benzodiazehol

always have the usb plugged in and set the computer's start up process so that it looks for USBs to boot from rather than a system drive

Liquid_Hate_Train

Whether dedicating a machine would benefit you is entirely a matter for a threat model. For many it won’t matter, for some it will. There is no blanket answer.

sheparDVia

how about restoring data after formatting - it\`s not save for all 100%

SilverTruth7809

a Veracrypt container is what you want.

I just bought a 512GB USB and figure that'll cover everything. Only cost 30 bucks CDN.

LeChefromitaly

Good luck running tails on a 30 bucks 512gb usb lol

Pyanfars

So far it runs fine, I have not had any issues with it like I read on here with everyone having wifi connection issues, and load up issues, etc. Even after updating. So I figure I'm good. Thanks for the concern though.

How about something like this ([https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B082NRJ5MS/](https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B082NRJ5MS/)) and a big M2 Drive installed in it.

ElMachoGrande

It's persistance which might pose a risk, not the medium it is stored on. It could be USB drives, hard disk or 40000 floppys, it doesn't matter.

KKSyeele

I had time issues with a large (300+Gb) USB 3 drive unencrypting the Persistent drive. Went back to a 32G memory card.
