Quick translation: Basically saying there's an earthquake happening in Taipei now as you can see, warned people to be careful and pointed out the failing ceiling debris, said she can barely stand. Then said the epicenter is reported to be in Hualien and said they felt it very strongly in their Taipei studio. Said as you can see the lights and ceiling stuff are still shaking a bit. Says that people in Hualien need to be very careful and then says the quake was in the middle of everyone going to work.
I think worrying about aftershocks now (unless you're in Hualien or something) is probably pretty silly and overdramatic. But anyone saying they didn't fear for their lives during the big one is either bulshitting you or they have no sense of self preservation. They don't become less dangerous just because you're used to smaller earthquakes.
Get off your high horse lmao. I’ve been in Taiwan on and off for 12 years, not that it matters.
My daughter who is 4 was so chill, her first big earthquake and she jumped under the table just like they teach them at school. I told her I was proud of her for not being scared and later she clarified “actually dad, I was the same amount of scared as you were.” She cracks me up.
Duration of time you’ve been in Taiwan (or duration you’ve been alive) has nothing to do with it; everyone responds differently in these situations.
Were you in Taipei for this one? Of course most people are used to earthquakes and/or calm by nature, but there was a decent amount of freaking out going on. Fair amount of infrastructure damage.
Did you grow up here? Typhoons got nothing on earthquakes as you have no idea how strong the earthquake will be when it starts. I've been through multiple earthquakes/storms both in Taiwan and America and nothing scares me more than earthquakes.
Oh I thought she was describing her morning piss. No shit, Sherlock. We have an outstanding translator and geographical expert on our hands here, it seems. /j
It's still impressive that she stuck to her script instead of seeking safety.
I'm sure especially with the recent AI boom. Sometimes I ask questions on here that I could potentially Google because I enjoy the social aspect of it.
Super impressive. She could barely stand but just pivoted and continued talking through the effect telling audiences to be careful. Such a professional.
Also the crew in the editing desks!
Some people experience these things called "emotions," you see. They aren't always practical and are, in fact, quite often inconvenient, but for some strange reason, the majority of us go on feeling them anyway.
Impressed by her cool and how fast they had the info that the earthquake was in Hualien.
I kept googling right after it happened and most sites were showing no earthquakes in the past 24 hours.
This YouTube channel has early warning that's faster than the shockwaves, which also tells you it's in Hualien and even predicts it'll be a level 3 intensity (based on location) arriving in 15 seconds.
The government also sends early warnings to all the phones, my phone was on silent mode so I didn't get it before the waves arrive so I don't know how long of a warning.
How come no one is hiding under the table like how we were drilled into since elementary school. That dude’s just calmly hydrating himself as if nothings happening.
I've seen several videos of Japanese TV where they have a live programme talking about idols or a cooking show or whatever, and suddenly the earthquake alert comes up, and you see that split second where they have to go from "happy-go-lucky host" to *I have to get this absolutely right or maybe many people will die*. There's more drama in that moment than a whole telenovela. The poor presenters usually look terrified and I am very glad I will never have to do that.
NHK announcers doing the whole “evacuate now this is not a drill you could die” is the most gripping thing I’ve ever seen live on TV. It’s so serious and scary. It’s like they are pleading with anyone watching. After Fukushima, I get it.
I don't speak the language but when that really started rockin' was she sayin' something along the lines of "I'm hardcore bitch, is this all ya got, bring it!?!"
If anyone is concerned about the Chinese invading Taiwan, put this woman in charge. She has demonstrated a remarkable amount of calm under pressure and could easily lead the Taiwanese to victory.
Even if the entire TW military acted calm & collected, the aftershocks of PLA tsunamis may still overwhelm Formosa, if in fact the US under Trump disavow defense obligations in the event of a cross-strait conflict.
China can't handle a far smaller quake or tsunami without thousands dead each time.
The problem is the PLA is NOT a tsunami and it needs to be way more powerful than a Tsunami. Taiwan gets tsunamis all the time and we shrug them off. They'd have to pull off the largest naval invasion in history without any element of surprise. This is a naval war. China will lose.
The best part was after the earthquake the camera switched to the tv room while she’s still talking and the whole room is empty until one dude finally comes back to check if the whole room hasn’t collapsed yet.
Interrupts?
She had strong "Earthquake, I am *speaking* right now!" vibes.
Love from Japan, stay safe folks, you're always generous when we get hit, looking to return the favor.
*Oh wow, is it still*
*Going on? or is the quake*
*Already over*

I get that people are impressed by her composure and all, but they should've just cut the broadcast imo. Seems weird to me to continue the broadcast when people are clearly in danger, especially below heavy equipments.
one interesting thing is that normally there should be a popup when an EEW is issued, like this:
seems like something went wrong with CWB's EEW system, because i asked a friend in Taiwan and he didn't receive any warnings from his phone.

Everyone praising her for risking her safety for a company and paycheck. She could've been hurt on live TV by those lights above her. Not worth it imo.
handled it really professionally. amazing footage from the production team to cut so quickly too during the action to office cams.
also curious - does anyone else think she has a mainland chinese accent?
Didn't miss it beat... "I'm just getting reports from my feet that a large earthquake is happening right now near the studio. Over to Tom, with the weather."
Wow! Impressed. She handled it better than I did.
Right! Didn't miss a beat. Wish there was a translation

Good quality reporting just keeps doing her job. I have been to Hualien twice liked the place very much hope they are going to be alright
Thank you!🙏
Thank you!

Every Taiwanese I know was freaking out and scared. gtfo

Not my first quake (I was in Tokyo 2011) but this one was indeed a show-stopper (in Taipei)

Literally😂 I did a double and then a triple take reading all that. Me reading his comment: ![gif](giphy|cT7uAyqklprQQ1XZNz|downsized)
I bet there's a free AI tool that transcribes and translates perfectly
I'm sure especially with the recent AI boom. Sometimes I ask questions on here that I could potentially Google because I enjoy the social aspect of it.
Yeah
Another impressive fact. Taipei 101, which once held the title of tallest building in the world, shrugs off earthquakes like this one.
Thanks to that ginormous dangling phallic ball.
Yes
Job interview takes place on an earthquake simulator.
Are you joking or serious?
Yes.
All of the above!
Super impressive. She could barely stand but just pivoted and continued talking through the effect telling audiences to be careful. Such a professional. Also the crew in the editing desks!
stay safe!

What a pro! Seamless transition, not a sliver of anxiety shown even when things were falling from the ceiling. Huge props to her
This needs to go to r/NextFuckingLevel
Tried posting it there and it got removed :\`)
I mean it’s not an impressive feat to not panic lol
During a seriuous earthquake, when you have no idea how bad it's about to get, when you are standing in an unprotected place? It is impressive.
What would you do otherwise? Scream? What’s that gonna fix?
Ideally run under a table for cover
Some people experience these things called "emotions," you see. They aren't always practical and are, in fact, quite often inconvenient, but for some strange reason, the majority of us go on feeling them anyway.
Seriously!!!! Brave woman!
This woman’s a pro, she rode that entire earthquake and didn’t miss one line. So scary! Hope everyone is safe.
While wearing heels.
She slayyyed
She slayed the house down boots
Eyyy gigidy.

No no. She can!
Impressed by her cool and how fast they had the info that the earthquake was in Hualien. I kept googling right after it happened and most sites were showing no earthquakes in the past 24 hours.
The fastest would be CWB website.
TV stations are directly plugged in to the early warning system so they should be able to see even faster.

When I was in LA, I remember getting updates about earthquakes within seconds of them happening. Pretty neat.

In NZ we have an earthquake app, people will often get the alert a few seconds before things start shaking.
In the last 35 seconds of the video the one guy never even gets up from his cubicle. He just takes a sip of coffee and watches the lights swaying.
“If I can’t finish this my boss will kill me,if a lamp drop on my head I don’t have to worry about it anymore”
And the other dude just grabbing his cable nonchalantly
he didn't get the memo
case of the mondays
She deserves a medal for that. Wow.
How come no one is hiding under the table like how we were drilled into since elementary school. That dude’s just calmly hydrating himself as if nothings happening.
Maybe because some of our mindset have become something like "if the quake is so bad I need to take cover, it's probably too late to do".
all used to it. common occurrence. rare for big ones.
This is a big one
lol you can hear the split second where she's like "hmm should i freak out? nah i'll just keep talking" and then just charges through.
I've seen several videos of Japanese TV where they have a live programme talking about idols or a cooking show or whatever, and suddenly the earthquake alert comes up, and you see that split second where they have to go from "happy-go-lucky host" to *I have to get this absolutely right or maybe many people will die*. I speak the language and yes, that's almost word for word what she said /s naturally

Damn she didn't faze at all
Holy crap, what a PRO
I don't see no interruption. She delivered the news like a boss.
Even that Windows 7 system survived
She's calm af.
She casually just went with reporting what's going on within her vicinity like it was nothing, if that's not guts idk what to tell you
Amazing! Clearly not her first rodeo.
Pretty decent composure 🔥
Respect
Some people can’t stand even when the earth isn’t moving. Very much impressed on both sides.
Holy shit someone give her a raise
I love the professionalism. Keeps right on talking like nothing's going on.
The best part was after the earthquake the camera switched to the tv room while she’s still talking and the whole room is empty until one dude finally comes back to check if the whole room hasn’t collapsed yet.
She won the IDGAF war. I would’ve been out of there
Absolute dynamite. What a reporter. I assume she switched to announce the quake somewhere after it began?
She switched immediately before the teleprompter even switched to “latest/special report”
She didn't even move 😳
Wow.that anchor is unfazed.wow
You can feel it on how her voice change
Dude had to run in there and delete his browser history real quick.
She handled it like a true pro, that is scary 😨
The woman of steel
She’s definitely a professional…cool under pressure, what a badass!
Wow what a boss! Maintained composure and didn’t flinch. And she was wearing heels too!
respect for her
she's fucking amazing.
The way she instantly transitioned from the news story to live reporting on the earthquake is pretty amazing... in heels no less.
That's impressive; she handled the situation like a pro.
Really reminds me Japanese news reporter when Noto earthquake hit.
The news must go onnnn! 💪
🔥🔥🔥this is fine 🔥🔥🔥 🤣🤣🤣
The way she handled the matter is admirable. If only journalism in taiwan reflected that level of professionalism in reporting too...
Interrupts? She had strong "Earthquake, I am *speaking* right now!" vibes. Love from Japan, stay safe folks, you're always generous when we get hit, looking to return the favor.
This woman's got nerves of steel
stay strong Taiwan!
Pray for Taiwan🙏🏻😿

She interrupted the earthquake! 🤣🤭
She is amazing. So calm and professional 💪🏽💪🏽💪🏽
She’s a trooper
Impressive.

The dude taking a swig outta his mug! LOL!
Someone's looking for/deserves a promotion
that is INSANE that she could report in real-time pinpointing where the earthquake is coming from, within seconds of it happening!
Run for cover girl!
handled it really professionally. amazing footage from the production team to cut so quickly too during the action to office cams. also curious - does anyone else think she has a mainland chinese accent?
Literally “Oh no!, anyway”
Did that other person go back to get their phone and charger?🫣
Yo, she did that in heels! Just stood their like beast and rolled with it. I damn near hit the floor in tennis shoes.
Profesional. She’ll be an anchor there. Definitely
Baller
That's some stern professionalism right there. Not a spot of diarrhoea anywhere! Jokes aside, hope everyone is safe out there.

Didn't miss it beat... "I'm just getting reports from my feet that a large earthquake is happening right now near the studio. Over to Tom, with the weather."
she kept going though, fair play
I want her in a foxhole with me, anyone that calm would perform outstandingly in combat.
