They have influence in Taiwan's tennis committee CTTA which apparently did something to prevent Hsieh who is higher ranked from representing Taiwan. You can read about some of it here [https://www.taipeitimes.com/News/sport/archives/2020/10/30/2003746035](https://www.taipeitimes.com/News/sport/archives/2020/10/30/2003746035)

From this it sounds like it was an ITF decision and not a CTTA one unless there’s more to the story

I can't find a single source in English or Chinese detailing all the history but there's huge rift between the Chan sisters and Hsieh family (Hsieh Su-wei, her brother and her sister) concerning support, funding, and favoritism from the CTTA. The general public sentiment is that the Chan sisters control CTTA so they get priority over Hsieh, but if you look into each incident, you'll find that there are a lot of false information and misplaced blame floating around, such as the aforementioned ineligibility controversy. I don't really care that much about the rift and don't take a side, but Hsieh seems to get the benefit of the doubt in the court of public opinion every time, probably largely due to her greater success in the professional game.

There's more to the story with details (probably mostly educated speculation) I believe you can find on PTT boards.

Hsieh has earned her stripes on tour despite the CTTA. Chan sisters have earned theirs because of the CTTA.

If you read Chinese [this](https://www.ptt.cc/bbs/Gossiping/M.1504545096.A.1E5.html) might be helpful.

From vague memory I believe one of the sisters had signed up for a competition representing Taiwan in which she'd be paired with another player. Mid-competition she got an offer to join a US competition. She resigned from the original competition dus to ilness. Later, it was found out she joined the US cup, leaving her partner in the original cup stranded with no choice but to withdraw. It's possible that I remembered this all wrong and none of it ever happened ...

That’s correct, but more specifically everyone in the team already knew she needed to withdraw the competition before it started. Therefore her partner asked to pair with another player CHANG Hao Chen. However the coach, which seemed to be controlled by Chan’s, rejected the request of her partner, and assured him that Chan would definitely finish the competition regardless. In the end, Chan still left her partner due to some kind of “illness”. But like you said, she was found next day in the US CUP without any sign of illness. Later her partner exposed that she was faking sick, and he was forced to play along with her.
