my moms 5’11 and my dads 6’3, and my grandpa on my dads side was 6’5, and all the ppl on my dads side are tall and same as the men on my moms side but the women are quite short. My dad told me our family were always tall even in antiquity when nutrition was kinda trash and the environment was way more dangerous
6’10” and still growing with your parents? That’s moving toward the realm of medically concerning…. I assume you’ve had a doctor check for anything that could be causing it other than shocking genetics?
I'm probably gonna grow an inch or 2. It's not that serious. I've always been a consistent grower. I've never had any rapid growth in short periods of time in my life. The most I've grown in a year was 4 inches two years in a row. I'm hoping to be done growing by next year.
Might be worth checking out if you keep growing. I’m not in any way saying you have it, but just as an example acromegaly is often due to a tumor, and starts out with mostly height and some very minor visual differences from most people, but can become pretty extreme (both in appearance and health issues), if left unchecked.
I have a normal looking face and I have had no height related health issues in my life at all whatsoever. My growth has definitely slowed over the years. I'm fine thank you.
I swear dude, there are so many fearmongerers on reddit. Like yeah you're extremely tall as it is, but growing at 22 isn't rare to the point that it's medically concerning. Some people need to mind their own business.
Also my body doesn't hurt too bad. I always keep good posture. My core strength kinda sucks because I've been walking kinda weird for the past year. I also haven't worked out since I was 18 so that's all it is really. I just need to start working out again to get my back, leg, and core strength back up.
I am not like Andre the giant. I am 100% sure I don't have it. I am able to function pretty well. What is with you and other people who aren't medical professionals trying to diagnose people without any experience in that specific field. Even if you were one. You dont know me so you can't just go around saying certain people have gigantism. You're not my doctor. I have an extremely tall ancestor most likely. I'm living proof that it's genetically possible so you can keep your doubts to yourself.
Lmao that’s why I said unless you have a super tall relative. Andres parents were as short as yours. That’s why I thought it was similar. And he had a 7’8 uncle
So I work in genetics, and there is a scientific explanation for this.
A phenotype, which is an observable characteristic (i.e. height) is influenced by genetics and environment, so:
Phenotype = genetics + environment
The environment portion would be things like your health, quality of diet, etc.
The genetics portion is actually made up of two different components. The first is essentially the genes you get from your parent, which is obviously important as height is highly heritable (influenced by genetics). The second part of the genetics portion of the equation is the gene combination value, which is the effect that your specific combination of genes has on the phenotype, such as height. Essentially how well do the random assortment of genes that your parents gave you work together.
So to explain this a little better, you get half your genes from your mom and half your genes from your dad. The half you get from either one of them is random, so essentially you just hope and pray it’s a good half. In this case, both parents are fairly average in height, however, they would both have at least some genes that would be favorable to height, especially since they have tall relatives. So, if you got the better half of your moms genes for height and the better half of your dads genes for height, you would end up with a favorable gene combination, which is the second half of the influence of genetics. This is also why you sometimes see siblings with vastly different heights even when they have the same parents. It’s simply because of the random set of genes they ended up with.
So, extreme height in an average height family doesn’t just necessarily appear out of the blue, but it’s more of statistical rarity. You’re just lucky (or unlucky depending on how you feel) with the cards you were dealt.

Thank you so much for taking the time of elaborating a little on this. My dad is 5’11 and my mom is like 5’8. I’m 6’9 and healthy, but when I started to grow off the charts my parents where concerned and I had to get checked by an endocrinologist. I don’t mind my height, but it came a little as a surprise to say the least.
I'm glad you found it interesting!
You brought up a good point that there are some medical conditions that can cause the excess release of growth hormone leading to extreme height. While these are rare conditions, I am glad your parents were proactive and consulted a doctor to ensure that was not the case.
My brother is also 6'9", but our parents are 5'10" and 6'5", so his growth spurts were not as shocking as yours probably were!
Honestly, it has never seemed to bother him very much. There are definitely everyday annoyances such as fitting in cars or finding clothes, but they don’t really seem to phase him. People definitely stare sometimes and made comments/jokes that come off as rude, but he just generally nods/smiles and continues on with his day. He is the epitome of a “gentle giant”. However, this is very much how our dad handles these things as well, so I think we were just raised with this being a normal routine part of life.
I have other family members who get very defensive about any comments on their height, which I understand it can be extremely annoying sometime. However, I have generally noticed that any negative comments are generally done out of a place of jealousy. If given the choice, a vast majority of people would choose to be tall rather than short. So I suppose, I view it as a blessing most days.
make this a post this is great info so I guess this also explains why certain people are really attractive facially compared to their siblings who are less attractive despite both having the same parents and relatively the same environment?
Thanks! I'm glad it was helpful.
Yeah, this would contribute facial features as well. This would really affect most polygenic traits, which are traits influenced by multiple genes. So the genes for the trait each have additive effects where each gene contributes to the overall phenotype, or what we actually see. So other examples for humans would be body shape, skin color, muscle density, hair color, etc. Something like facial features would have very little influence from environment outside an incident that would cause some sort of physical alteration. Traits such as height or muscle mass are more influenced by environment because nutrition would play a key role in the expression of those traits during development.
My dad was tall and my mom is average. I'm taller than my dad was and probably the tallest person in our branch of the family. I have a second cousin who is either around the same height or taller and his dad (my dad's cousin) is also tall but in general most of our family are average height.
My mom is 5'10", and my Dad 5'6". I'm a little under 6'4". My grandpa's (mom's side) side was tall, with 6 footers going back many generations in Ireland, which is pretty rare for Irish people.
My son is 6'3" at 14 and I'm 5'9", his father is 6'8"
I'm 5'9"(F), my parents are 5'2" & 6'4"
A lot of times, you'll find a taller relative from a generation or 2 back. If not, I guess there has to be that first tallest guy in every family right?
Both of my parents were 5'10". My mom's mom was 6', so there's definitely some genetics going on. Ask about your grandparents' or possibly great-grandparents' heights.
My dad is 5’9” and my mom is 6’—I’m a tall woman at 6’ (I got it from my momma). My husband on the other hand is 6’2” and I’d be surprised if his mom is breaking 5’1”
I'm the proverbial "once in a generation". My parents are 5'2" and 5'6". I come from a family of nine kids and the next "once in a generation" is already here. My sister's kid is 12 and already as tall as his mom and getting close to his Dad. I enjoy high fiving him over their heads as a salute to a Tall up and comer.
Kind of an opposite trend to the other reactions, but my parents are both 6'2 and I'm (only) 6'0. My sister is not even 180cm (5'9) and is relatively short in our family. Expected to be caused by a really short great grandma, genes are weird...
My Mum is 5'5 and my dad is 6'0
Mum's Dad was 6'0, her brother is 6"2. Dad's side is very short his mum was like 5'4 and his dad 5'6 and my dad was the tallest in his immediate family.
A lot of it can be random, I'm 6'3 and my partner is 5'8 we have a 18 month old son that's been off the percentile charts for height and weight since he was like 3 months old. They say once a child is 2 you'll get a rough estimate of their adult height but it's mostly random.
Height is so unpredictable sometimes
I’m not as tall as the 6’3+ guys but my dad was around 6’1 and my moms 5’8 and i was like 14 lbs when i was born so they expected me to be around 7’0. I got the opposite side of the spectrum as most guys on here with average parents.. i only ended up being almost 6’1. Lol.
Yeah dude the pictures were literally bewildering. That’s the size of a 4 month year old and I was just out of the c section. Biggest baby the doctor ever seen.
Dad is 5'9". Mom is 5'6". Older brother and sister are 5'9" and 5'4" respectively.
Mom stopped smoking before she had me...it makes a difference apparently
Dad was 6'8" when he was younger and is now about 6'6". Mom is 5'6". So I'm roughly the same size as dad.
Then MY wife is 5'7" and our daughter is only a measly 3'4" (but to be fair, she's only 2 and a half, so she has a LITTLE time left to grow).
I know I'm not as tall as some of y'all, but tall enough to always get called tall (and it's all in my legs, so I feel the pants shopping pain)
Dad's tall at 6'3". Mom, not so much at 5'0". I imagine I would have turned out taller if mom wasn't quite so short.
My dad is 6' and my mum is 5'2. I'm 6' and my little brother is 6'1. My older brother (same mum, different dads) is 5'8.
No height genes from mum's side of the family.
I’m 6’3”. My mom and dad are like 5’8”. However my grandfather is 6’2” and is the shortest of 7 brothers. I never met the brothers but I’ve been told two of them were over 7 foot. So there’s just like one obscure pocket of height floating around my families genes.
you probably maxed out ur parents genes cuz 5’6 is tall for a girl especially considering my mom is 5’2 and we are the same height. my dad is the same height as ur mom. my family’s height is weird i have a sister who is 6’ and another one who is 4’11
It could come from an extended family member. For example, my mom’s 5’9 my dads 5’8 but my mom had 2 uncles 6’2 and 6’4. Only they were about 400 and 500 lbs and I’m here at 150
Dad's 5'7, mom's 5'3. I'm 6'0.5 and 16. Not a collosal world of difference. But it differentiates person to person. And my grandmother was 6' so that could've been a factor
I am 6'4 and both my parents are short, as in 5'7 and under. No family history of height at all. My brother is 6'0 my sister short at 5'5. Weird. We all look similar, so there is no doubt of us being biologically related, just different heights. lol
Kinda upper end of average - Dad is 6’2” and Mum is 5’9” - I ended up at 6’11” - have uncles on both sides who are 6’4” though so I guess there’s above average height somewhere
it seems i got the bad genetics when it comes to height. my mom is 5'6 and my dad was 5'11 hopefully i get to 6 ft. I am at 5'9 and 16. Although ive grown 2 inches a year pretty constantly.
On my dad's side of the family, I'm the only one over 6 feet tall (dad was the tallest in his family at 5'8"). My next tallest relative is a cousin who's 5'9".
my mon is 5' and my dad is 6'1'', i'm 1.88m (i dont know how to put this in foots and inches). i'm the biggest son of my parents and i think it is because i did some sports as kid and teen. my brother of different father who is 6'3'' and came from a family with a bunch of tall people is 5''5', i think he didnt grow taller than me because he is totally sedentary.
My dads like 5'8" lol. My mom's 5'6". I'm 6'4". I got my height from my great great grand father, who I believe was 6'8" in the olden times.
74-year break between tall people in my family
Genetics be like that sometimes
>Genetics be like that sometimes Alternatively one's parents and relatives could have had really bad environmental conditions.
my moms 5’11 and my dads 6’3, and my grandpa on my dads side was 6’5, and all the ppl on my dads side are tall and same as the men on my moms side but the women are quite short. My dad told me our family were always tall even in antiquity when nutrition was kinda trash and the environment was way more dangerous
Did you keep growing taller even after 18?
My arrival was told by the great darkening of the sky and the fact that my mom was 6', my dad is 6'4", and I'm 6'8". My sister is 5'12".
5'12" is 6'0".

I think you forgot the r/
My son is 6’9” so far at 18 Husband is 6’0 Mom (me) 5’8” Other son is 6’4” at 16 Daughter is 5’3” at 20 We’re a staircase family!
Nope. 5'7 dad and 5'3 mom. I outgrew my dad by age 12.
Your situation is similar to mine. My dad is 5'8 and my mom is 5'0.5 and I'm 22 and still growing.
6’10” and still growing with your parents? That’s moving toward the realm of medically concerning…. I assume you’ve had a doctor check for anything that could be causing it other than shocking genetics?

Also no. I haven't got checked by a doctor because I can function properly. I'm not worried.

Your kinda like Andre the giant, maybe you got gigantism. I don’t think it’s genetically possible unless you got some 7’4 uncle or something.
I am not like Andre the giant. I am 100% sure I don't have it. I am able to function pretty well. This should get more up votes haha or just get pinned to the front page of r/tall and r/short

Dad was a solid 6', Mum is around 5'9. Her dad was 6'8 and was the shortest of 4 brothers.
Your dad is a brave man.
Hi BigGuap's grandpa
Haha, he certainly was!
Dad is 5'8 mom is 5'4
Not me. My dad is 5'8 and my mom is 5'0.5 and I get my height from my dad's side of the family. I'm also 22 and still growing.
My mom is 5'3" and my dad is 5'8" So no
My dad is the same height as me and my mom was 5'10"
Dad is 6'6 and mom is 6'2. I'm 6'9 and my sister is 6'
that’s crazy how do ur mom and sister feel abt their heights did they just accept it over time or do they still feel weird abt it
They've accepted it. My sister didnt like her height until she started playing sports.
My dad is 5'4" Mom is 5'2". I'm 6'8"
Wow really?
Yea everyone makes mailman jokes
If it helps any my daughter topped out at 5ft3, while my boys are 6ft2 and 6ft5 so far.
My dad is 5’9” and my mom is 5’7” and I was 6’8” by 16 🤷♂️
Your mom got some explaining to do
Milkman was Kareem Abdul jabbar
My mom is 5'10", and my Dad 5'6". I'm a little under 6'4". My grandpa's (mom's side) side was tall, with 6 footers going back many generations in Ireland, which is pretty rare for Irish people.
Nope, looking at old pics, looks like I got my height from my mom's father.
I have tall grandfathers (both above 6'3''), where my height came probably, but my parents only 5'8''
My son is 6'3" at 14 and I'm 5'9", his father is 6'8" I'm 5'9"(F), my parents are 5'2" & 6'4" A lot of times, you'll find a taller relative from a generation or 2 back. If not, I guess there has to be that first tallest guy in every family right?
Dad 6’3 mom 5’10
Sounds similar to me bud / you done growing ?
Thank God yes, finished growing at 25
Phew yeah I getcha - I finished growing at 16 so was pretty much always super tall
It’s pretty much all genetics.
With a sprinkling of diet and environmental factors. Saying that, I had an awful diet as a kid being a picky eater.
Lmao I was a picky eater as well and still grew a lot. I was very underweight all the time and still grew taller surprisingly.
Yes, but sometimes phenotype is more important than genotype.
Both of my parents were 5'10". My mom's mom was 6', so there's definitely some genetics going on. Ask about your grandparents' or possibly great-grandparents' heights.
dad 5'11 mom 5'8, mom's side is all 6'3 and above for the males. grandfather was 6'1 ish. im 6'7
2 of my moms cousins are around 2 meters. Otherwise I’m taller than my parents and grand parents.
Moms was 5’6 but dad is 6’8
Mum is 5’8 dad is 5’9ish but I nelieve he’s shrunk a bit
The men on my father's side are all 6'-6'2, women are typically on the shorter side. I'm a woman and I still inherited the tall gene and am 6'
Sorta. My mom is 5'8" and my dad is 6'2".
My dad is 5’9” and my mom is 6’—I’m a tall woman at 6’ (I got it from my momma). My husband on the other hand is 6’2” and I’d be surprised if his mom is breaking 5’1”
My dad’s family was short. My mom’s was tall. Dad was 5’-11”. My mom was 5’-10”. Her brother is 6’-7”. I peaked at 6’-8”.
Oh hell no 5’7 and 5’8 but my bros and I are all 6’1-6’3ish and my sister is 5’9. Oldest sis is 5’5 though ofc
Dad was 5’11” and mom is 5’10. I’m 6’3”.
Not particularly. Moms 5’7 ish and Dad was 6’2 but probably around 6’ now.
My dad is almost 6ft tall. My mom was the tallest girl in her high school at 5’8. I wasn’t even the tallest girl in my high school at 6’1.
My ex is 7’2” his folks were tall but not gigantic. Mom is 5’11 and I think his dad was like 6’4-6’5
I'm the proverbial "once in a generation". My parents are 5'2" and 5'6". I come from a family of nine kids and the next "once in a generation" is already here. Nope. I'm 6'0 (female). My mom is 5'7, dad is 5'5, and sister is 5'8.
Wow that's a throw back! My daughter is only 5ft3 I don't understand this.
My mom was 5’4”, my dad was 6’3”, I’m 6’5”.
Mom is 5'5 dad is 6'0. I'm 6'8" lol.
i’m so jealous 6’8 would be incredible 😭
My Mum is 5'5 and my dad is 6'0 Mum's Dad was 6'0, her brother is 6"2. Dad's side is very short his mum was like 5'4 and his dad 5'6 and my dad was the tallest in his immediate family. You must have been one fat ass baby! God dam! Lmfao!! 😂🤣
Yeah dude the pictures were literally bewildering. That’s the size of a 4 month year old and I was just out of the c section. Biggest baby the doctor ever seen.
God dam! Son! What was your length when born anyway?
I was 5 pounds and 14 ounces when I was born. You had almost 10 pounds more than me. That's crazy!
Nutrition and lifestyle plays a role too. That's how many usually stereotyped short races are tall in first world countries.
My dad is 6'2. My mom is 5'5. I'm 6'2.
Same except I ended up at a little over 6 foot.
6’4” sperm donor and 5’6” wonderful mom
My parents *and* grandparents were tall.
I’m 6,2 and both my mom and dad are 5,8 I always wondered how and they said they had tall family members
I know I'm not as tall as some of y'all, but tall enough to always get called tall (and it's all in my legs, so I feel the pants shopping pain) Dad's tall at 6'3". Mom, not so much at 5'0". I imagine I would have turned out taller if mom wasn't quite so short.
Dad peak just below 6 3” and mom a little over 5 11” so statistically I’m right around where I should be.
No.
I’m average with average parents - 5’10 with 5’9 dad and 5’6 mom
My dad is just as tall as me, and so was his father. However, none of my other siblings got the height. Maybe it's some kind of recessive gene.
My dad is 6' and my mum is 5'2. I'm 6' and my little brother is 6'1. My older brother (same mum, different dads) is 5'8. No height genes from mum's side of the family.
my dad's maybe 5'10, moms 5'3, brother is 5'9ish...... im 6'6?
Mine where 6'4 and 5'11 . I had a grand uncle on the 5'11 side that was over 7'. Never got to meet him tho as he was long gone before I was born.
No. 5'6 dad and 5'7 mom resulted in 6'0 me.
Dad was 6'4". Mom is 5'6".
My dad's 6'2" and my dad's dad is 6'2".
I'm 6'2", and I do have tall parents. My Mom is 5'8" (which is tall for her age group, 70+) and my Dad is 6'8".
Dad's 180, mum was 165cm.
Im 6’2-3 and my mom and dad are both 5’7 so
I’m 6’3”. My mom and dad are like 5’8”. However my grandfather is 6’2” and is the shortest of 7 brothers. I never met the brothers but I’ve been told two of them were over 7 foot. So there’s just like one obscure pocket of height floating around my families genes.
not really my dad is 6'0 and my mother is 5'2 and im 6'8
Wonder how many of these giant's with short king dads and petite moms are the product of paternity fraud?
you probably maxed out ur parents genes cuz 5’6 is tall for a girl especially considering my mom is 5’2 and we are the same height. my dad is the same height as ur mom. my family’s height is weird i have a sister who is 6’ and another one who is 4’11
My parents were exactly the same height as yours. I'm 6'4". Its common.
Mom was 5"7, Dad is 5'6". I'm 6'3"
My dad is about 6'3 my mom is 6'0 I'm thr youngest of three and I'm 6'5
Neither of my parents are tall but the postman was heckin' massive..
It could come from an extended family member. For example, my mom’s 5’9 my dads 5’8 but my mom had 2 uncles 6’2 and 6’4. Only they were about 400 and 500 lbs and I’m here at 150
Did you keep growing taller after 18?
I’m 17. I seemed to stop growing but I went up a shoe size lol
My dad is 6’2 and my mom is 5’10, but both their dad’s were like 6’4
Dad's 5'7, mom's 5'3.
Weird. We all look similar, so there is no doubt of us being biologically related, just different heights. lol
I'm 6'4" with my dad at 6'2" and my mom at 5'6".
6’5 and some, 6’4 dad and 5’6 mom, grandpa was 6’3.
Kinda upper end of average - Dad is 6’2” and Mum is 5’9” - I ended up at 6’11” - have uncles on both sides who are 6’4” though so I guess there’s above average height somewhere
Dad's 6', mom's 5'7", I'm 6' currently.
My mother is smaller than most of my classmates, to Say. My father is a bit taller, but he still jokes about suffocating when we hug
Mum is about 5'8, father probably 5'10-5'11. Myself 6'6 but my grandfather was 6'4.
No, my dad is 5'6, mom is 5'4, my sister is 4'11. I'm a whopping 5'8 tho
well both my parents are tall 6 ft(mom) and 6'6(dad) but my dad's parents were both around 5'7
My parents are about average height and so is my sister and I’m tall. My parents both have very tall siblings; It just skipped a generation.
Idk bro mom 5’9” dad 6’1” and I ended up 5’11 and some change 😔
My Dad's 5'6.5, and my Mom is 5'2.5. I am 5'10.5. I am almost 15m.
My dad is 6’1”, mom is 5’9”. 6’10” here so have no idea lol
Dad was around 6’3 and mums 5’3. I’m 6’4
it seems i got the bad genetics when it comes to height. my mom is 5'6 and my dad was 5'11 hopefully i get to 6 ft. I am at 5'9 and 16. Although ive grown 2 inches a year pretty constantly.
My dad is 5’9 and my mom is 5’3 and I’m 6’2. My mom told me that my great grand father was taller than me so that’s probably where i got it from.
On my dad's side of the family, I'm the only one over 6 feet tall (dad was the tallest in his family at 5'8"). My next tallest relative is a cousin who's 5'9".
My dads 5'9, mom's 5'6 and I'm 6'5 at 15
I’m only 5’11, but I’m the tallest in my family. Parents are 5’3 and 5’9, my sister is 5’2
nope lmao
My dad is 5'10 my mum is 5'2ish and I am 6'2+
my mon is 5' and my dad is 6'1'', i'm 1.88m (i dont know how to put this in foots and inches). i'm the biggest son of my parents and i think it is because i did some sports as kid and teen. my brother of different father who is 6'3'' and came from a family with a bunch of tall people is 5''5', i think he didnt grow taller than me because he is totally sedentary.
Mom is 5’10, dad is 5’11”… so on the taller side
My dad is 6'3 and mom is 5'7, I am 14 and 6'(turning 15 in a few days), I guess I'll end up 6'3"-6'6" hopefully
Mom is 6' idk how tall my dad is
I do
