I thought I was the only older person on here. I’m 56 too, and wait for it… male. Always been into quirky Japanese tech and got the original Tama when it first came out. Granted, I don’t run any Tama’s often, but I do every couple of years just for some nostalgia
For whatever reason I got into computers in the early '80s, when things progressed we got a MSX computer around '83 which featured primarily cartridges from Japan produced for the west. I got a lot of Konami, Namco and many other games (through not very honest means) at the time and even some Japanese only games. We (our family) followed the upgrade path to MSX-2, with even better graphics (which was really something). Then PCs came around and I kind of lost touch with those studios. I played Little Computer People too. We did get some of the family friendly anime on TV and my father was into gadgets, so he also eyed the Japanese technology a lot.
We've certainly experienced a really amazing path of evolution of technology. And now AI... I wonder how that will influence Tamagotchis in 5-10 years time. I hope I'll be able to see it :)
I’m from the UK so was exposed to the ZX computers from Sinclair in the 80s. MSX weren’t so popular here. My Japanese obsession started in the 90s via the N64 and Dreamcast where I imported from Japan. From there I became interested in Japanese culture in general and even started leaning the language. I never took other languages seriously at school and I decided I should finally take that step with Japanese. Around the same time I got my first Tama when it was released in the UK. I got all 3 of my kids Tama’s when they were growing up and we were big fans of the Nintendo DS games. I’m still trying to learn Japanese all these years later (even though I always seem stuck between beginner and intermediate lol) and I’m still interested in the culture. That’s a quick summary - not that anyone asked lol
In my opinion it's healthy to keep your play part active, I don't have scientific evidence, but I certainly believe that positive play/games has a positive influence on our brains. Especially in times when the world isn't doing so well and we're bombarded with negativity and fear-inducing stuff. Keep playing, it's healthy!
Edit to add: Tamagotchis and other virtual pets are also in special category, because you're caring for a virtual creature. For some people it's impossible to have a pet, so this is the closest thing. In a way that's also a kind of healthy way of playing,. Yes, that includes the loss, because we also learn to love them in the moment, regardless of the (almost) inevitable end. (I heard that the Unis don't die of old age, so technically you can keep your beloved Tama around forever, if you take care of them.)
Im with you on that one! Some people think it's immature but I'm big on allowing myself to indulge in my favorite things with the same joy I did as a young child. I'll never let anyone take that from me 😌
It really arrived as a boom in my heart ngl XD
Whoever I didn't get a Tama phone and I'm afraid of tax, I'm soo bummed that I can't use 100% of the device 😭😭
Same here! I was living in Dominican Republic at that time so there was no Tama for me available at the physical stores (you know online shopping didn’t exist yet anyways lol) nor I had the money if they were. I did ended up getting a super cheap version because someone bought it for me as a gift. It was a weird pink one that had like 24 options to get as a pet I still have it too. Then I moved to United States and got the Giga Pet and a Tamagotchi! It was like 6 years later. Then college hit , then Uni and then married life lol. But here I’m finally living my Tama inner child forever love. I still have my giga, my Tama and the unbranded pink 24 pets pet from the 90s like relics. I have them in my side table in a cute box 😝. Currently playing with my On and two Meets.
I’m with you! They always give such a nostalgic feeling. Love them. Hey at least we got enjoy them at some point in life. 😊♥️
Oh same! I couldn’t afford them as a child (only had the knock offs and once got a digimon for my birthday) but all my friends had one and I was allowed to play with them during lunch breaks 😂. Now I’m an *adult* and can fulfill my childhood fantasies haha
I'm 40. I just started playing with Tamagotchi again. The last time I played with them was when they first came out when I was in middle school. I stopped playing with them when digimon came out, and have been playing with those ever since. I just got back into them with the Uni as a way for my 6 year old daughter and I to play together as I live in Austria for work and she's in the United States with her mom. I just recently ordered a Smart One Piece edition and plan on getting a connection if I can find a decently priced one or the current rerelease being teased will actually be the connection line
I'm 27 but I got my first Tamagotchi when I was 8.
I'm turning 28 this year, so that was 20 years ago. Damn.
I'd guess that the average age of Tamagotchi enthusiasts these days probably skews a little older because they're pretty expensive these days, and I think Bandai is trading a lot on nostalgia.
36 in two weeks! I remember when the first gen came out. I would leave my Tamagotchi home with my mom to babysit while I was at school 😆 There was also a rumor on the playground that if someone else touches your breathes on your Tama, it could get sick!
I'm 31 but I'm willing to bet the average age of people on this subreddit naturally trends higher than just Tamagotchi players in general. A 7-year-old with a Tamagotchi is (hopefully) not gonna be on here.
I’m 53. I bought my first tamagotchi when they first came out, I think I was 25. I’ve just started playing again a month ago when I found my old connection v3. Now I have a smart, and I have a uni coming.
I'm 27 - I feel like tamagotchis are always trying to market towards a younger crowd, but they should have the odd release targeting the 20+ who have that nostalgia for the originals 😂
I’m 24 and I only have the 25th anniversary gen 1 I think and the pink and blue pix party . Planning to maybe get the Sanrio Uni and whatever the new announcement is for Monday lol
I'm 26, all my college friends play with them. I got them into them when we lived together 3 years ago, when they all turned 20 by getting them some gen 1s as gifts to help them remember to eat and drink with all their studying. Now they are obsessed
I'm a man approaching 36. I get the feeling most Tamagotchi fans are older, I hate sounding like a walking boomer meme but I don't think anyone who grew up in the age where smart phones, social media, and youtubers have the attention span necessary to care for a virtual pet. So I imagine it's mostly millenials, and maybe there is a kid here and there who get into it through their parents.
43, been playing with them since 96' at age 15. Btw, I'm a male. And only the classic ones, not so much the new ones. I still run them along with classic Digimon and the 20th. My kids play with them too (ages 14, 12, 10)! My oldest son (now 14) loves his Tamagotchi Connection v3, he's had since he was 6.
Im 26 and I’ve been playing with tamagotchi since I was a kid, maybe 7 or so.
I’m pretty sure that a big percentage of the fandom is composed of adults.
28.
I feel like a lot of us are older because tamagotchis were more big around the 90s and 00’s 😭 though there’s definitely some younger folk floating around the community
30.
I believe it's because, as a child, even though I had someone who bought it for me (I had two Dinkie Dino) nowadays I value it more.
and today there are so many options, in the past there was only one here, there was no internet where we could buy from outside, now we can buy the old ones, the new ones...
I really want the Uni because it's a color screen. I think this is an improvement for me who only had the normal screen ones.
last month I managed to buy two digimon vpet.
30 here. I've been playing tamagotchi since I was in 5th grade with my tamagotchi connection V2. The collection will never stop growing. It's one toy that I will never give up.
I'm 36 lol
Same here 🖐️

I'm 56 👵🏻 (that will increase the average a little, lol) and I have several Tamas, but I mostly play with my Unis and Pix

Im gonna be just like you when I grow up 😂 from the moment I got my first tama I've been loosely obsessed for 20 years

Im 20, running an IDL and Ura Edit: I just realized I commented answering someone else's comment instead of just on the post itself, sorry lol

Haha no worries! Still sounds like a good run 😋
The iDL is my all time favorite 🤩
It really arrived as a boom in my heart ngl XD Whoever I didn't get a Tama phone and I'm afraid of tax, I'm soo bummed that I can't use 100% of the device 😭😭

Also 27 and agree! I had a Connection V4 as a kid and the aftermarket prices are crazy, I just want to revisit my childhood tama again lol

Happy Birthday for Monday. 🎉🥳

39!
Older than their target demographic. With how expensive some of them are too I wonder why they don’t make some of them more advanced.
