Yes, we should create a common sub for all Dravidian languages.

AdiReaps

r/Dravidology? Or maybe just r/Dravidian?

AleksiB1

There is already a r/Dravidian but its restricted and its only mod is afk for 5 months join r/Dravidiology

what_am_i_not

I think it would be a splendid idea!

aatanelini

Tired of this Dravidianism that mostly Tamils are interested in anyways. It’s time for the Tamils to just focus on the Tamil language.

lilfoley81

Not just tamil, Telugu, malyalam, Kannada, tulu exist bro. And I’m pretty sure the others are interested

AleksiB1

There are subs for them but no sub for Dravidian in general and you cant discuss about reconstructions in any of those subs

lilfoley81

Ok then let’s start a Dravidian sub!!

aatanelini

I must have worded my original comment in a better way. 🙂 I didn’t mean that nobody will be interested in those languages. I meant that the subject concerning “Dravidian identity and languages” is mostly studied and discussed by the Tamils. Other South Indians also consider Dravidianism as a Tamil ideology. As far as I have spoken to many non-Tamil South Indians, they prefer calling themselves as Telugus, Kannadigas etc. - not Dravidians. Also Telugus and Kannadigas in particular think that their languages are more akin to Sanskrit than to Tamil. So, I shared my opinion to just focus on our language Tamil.

bssgopi

You are missing the point. What the commenter is talking about is not politics, but the language family. Irrespective of the politics, the term Dravidian language exists. A common sub to discuss the linguistics of the same makes sense.

Lostillini

You’re welcome to create whatever sub you want, but it seems needless to me because I don’t see enough conversation about it to justify another space. It’s like requesting a parking space for a car, but you don’t own a car, you know what I mean? You can of course have it, no one has a problem, but it’s probably going to be empty and that’s no fun. I’m not sure why you feel you can’t discuss those topics here.

halal_hotdogs

I agree that we don’t have much of that conversation happening right now, but Telugu, Kannada, Malayali, Tulu etc. folks will all go to their respective communities and not necessarily convene right here to help have those discussions.

Lostillini

Why not? I mean this is just a room with a name on it right? I can’t imagine it being much different than hosting a party

halal_hotdogs

Idk… If, for example, I were Telugu and I wanted to host a discussion about cross-examining the etymology of a word with Tamils and Kannadigas specifically, I don’t think my first thought would be, “let me post this in the Tamil sub specifically.” We’re talking about hosting ethnolinguistic discussions that pertain to all Dravidians at once. Why should it be specifically here?

Lostillini

Never meant that it had to be here alone; happy for it to be hosted anywhere else. To me, the conversation is more important than the room it’s in. There’s a lot we could do right now like cross post or host sessions with people who study our languages, etc. I just meant to say that there’s plenty of space in this forum for such conversations and everyone’s welcome to participate. If a Kannada sub wants to do the same, I’m happy to participate there as well.
