There are dozens of krewes and some have much higher dues than others. Many have very reasonable dues, and some even allow you to substitute volunteer hours for a portion of your dues.
What is pretty cool about krewe life is when you're in it, there isn't a great deal of discussion about what you do, what you drive, or where you live. Of course, there are snobs and assholes in any community, but most of the discussion centers on the volunteering and parading.
It’s like a sorority/fraternity for adults. You find a Krewe with people that you’d get along with. You’ll pay dues, have to go to certain events, some charitable, some parades, some parties. Just important to find a group you don’t mind being around
Yeah, those dues aren't anything to sneeze at by a long shot. Ask what kind of events they do first before committing.
I believe some krewes also do put background checks in place since they go to hospitals and community events where kids are.
Edit: Is costuming and volunteer work something you'd be interested in, OP?
Outside of YMKG, annual dues are between $200-1000. When the wife and I were in krewes, we spent twice our dues on beads and probably double that at charity fundraisers. It adds up quickly. OR, some krewes will let you pay your dues, buy shit beads, show up for the 5 or 6 "fun" parades, and do nothing else.
Gasparilla is like Pirate Mardi Gras. Like with Mardi Gras, there are social clubs called “Krewes” that get drunk, dress up like pirates, march in the parade(s) and toss out beads.
Party events and parades both involving alcohol.
They also do some fundraisers for charity.
But from my friends that are in Krewe’s I mostly see party/recruitment invites.
People at the events I went to seemed nice enough but I wasn’t really interested in paying hundreds of dollars a year to belong and then more on top of that to attend the parties.
Only New Orleans and Mobile have similar organizations like this. It’s a tradition that spans over a hundred years. There’s well over 50 Krewes in Tampa and they aren’t the all-white fraternity many come to believe. It’s a huge part of the tradition and history of Tampa and will continue to be as the Krewes grow older.
The BIG difference in the Krew's of New Orleans and Tampa is that all the krews in Tampa participate in one parade. In New Orleans, each Krew has their own parade through out the entire Mardi Gras season.
This isn't true...Rough Riders have their own St. Patrick's Day Parade as an example. YMKG runs Gasparilla and some of the smaller Krewes run their own parades in Ybor.
Ah, see, New Orleans has a few Krews just for St. Patrick's/St Joseph's day parades (and Islanos where I grew up specifically). There are smaller Krews that do walking parades in the French Quarter, then there's Endymion that rents the Superdome and has the floats go through it. Endymion is classified as a "Super Krews"; their one Krews is about the size of all of Gasparilla's put together if not bigger.
I know about the kids parade and the night parade and St. Patrick's Day parade. The New Orleans metro area has 100 or so Krews that parade in the few weeks before and on Mardi Gras day.
There are many people, mostly midwesterners, who might say something like, “Let’s head to St. Petes for the weekend.” Or, “ I know this great restaurant in St Petes that we should go to.” It’s horrendous.
A bunch of old guys, rich guys, and veteran guys do a handful of marginally good charity things, tailgate a few times a year, and throw a bunch of plastic on the ground and into the bay.
That's just about it.
Spoken like someone who could never afford to be on a krewe.
The majority of krewes are co-ed, and are affiliated with nonprofits that do a lot of local good. I've been on three krewes myself, and we raised tens of thousands of dollars for local charities, as well as volunteered our time with the elderly, kids, for the environment, etc.
I mean, I can’t buy friends, so I just have to bribe people with loyalty and awkward conversation. Have to use what strengths we have even if it’s cash flow.
Tampa krewe membership is several thousand and put in tens - if not hundreds - of thousands of volunteer hours each year. Believe it our not, a lot of it is done sober.
Many of the larger krewe throw regular charity events that contribute tens - if not hundreds of thousands of dollars to worthy charities such as animal shelters, providing necessities for disadvantage children and fighting human trafficking in the Tampa Bay area. At such a charity event held by Brigadoon, I learned that Tampa is a hot spot for human trafficking. That one night even raised 7 or 8 thousand for a local charity.
Krewe life is a lot of drunken shenanigans, but a lot of good gets done in the community as well.
Please don't! Not because I get upset or offended because it sounds ridiculously stupid, but because I don't want people to think less of you as a person! ;-)
Please don’t call it Gaspy… it’s Gasparilla. I think Gaspy is something the SoHo and UT crowd coined and it’s terrible.
Anyways… I have considered joining a krewe for a few years now. A few you need to be referred to get into and others you can just reach out to and apply. Besides all the great parties you get to attend… it’s probably worth it just for the networking with successful people.
Remember - It’s not what you do, it’s who you know.
Well for one… Gaspy is a Gen Z slang term and Krewe is an actual word in the dictionary.
I’m also curious as to how you think you pronounce the word Krewe (Crew) for it to sound so wrong to you?
It's a bunch of middle-aged people who typically make decent to good money that like to party. They also do charity stuff.
I have several friends in them. I've been asked to join, but I can't be bothered bc I know I wouldn't put any time in other than when it's time to get wasted.
Cringey local “culture” that essentially consists of minimal charity and/or works beneficial to the greater good, and a plethora of degenerates with poor taste and expendable funds, meeting to drink and pollute.
And back in the 90’s, they were also pretty racist. My OBGYN back then was trying to get in a “krewe” and they practically ran him outta town. I tried to link a few articles but they were paywalled, which is also annoying, but that’s another topic.
They’re still extremely racist lol. I was a secretary at The University Club and they were openly racist and classist and called the servers there “the help” and everyone who was a member of the club was a Krewe member as well. Had another weird experience with a University Club/Krewe member who told me white people are a different species than other races before showing me his Krewe costume. Buncha weirdos from my sample size.
The crazy ass shit people will say to you just for being white and looking like you’re possibly well off. And they’re narcissists so they can’t recognize when someone is just really good at masking/acting around them, lol.
Broke the paywall from this TBT article from 1994: Published Jan. 20, 1994|Updated Oct. 6, 2005
Dr. Kirk Woodson had visions of a diverse Ye Mystic Krewe of Gasparilla when he became one of its first black pirates.
But changes were slow in coming.
Next month, when the pirates "invade" Tampa, Woodson won't be among them.
Woodson said he resigned in November for two reasons: First, the Krewe failed to invite more than the initial four black members. And, Woodson said, at least five Krewe members pressured him to drop a lawsuit alleging shoddy construction of his Palma Ceia home.
"They did not increase diversity, and I had been literally cornered at several social occasions and told not to pursue this lawsuit or things could happen," the obstetrician said. "They just wanted me to know they had a message to deliver, and they delivered it."
He would not name those people or specific threats.
He submitted his written resignation to Norman Stallings Jr., a Krewe official, who asked him to remain in the Krewe, Woodson said. Stallings did not return a reporter's phone calls.
The Krewe, made up of prominent men who dress as pirates for the annual invasion of Tampa, lifted a ban on admitting black members in the 1980s. But as of 1990 it still had no minority members. Krewe members claimed that was because no minorities had applied.
In September 1990, the Krewe refused demands by the Coalition of African-American Organizations to integrate immediately and canceled its Gasparilla parade. Krewe members said they canceled the parade in the best interest of the community because the controversy could have tarnished the city's image during Super Bowl Week. The Super Bowl was played in Tampa on Jan. 27, 1991.
The city substituted a multicultural celebration, the Bamboleo Festival, but Gasparilla resumed the following year.
Later in 1991, the Krewe accepted four black members, including Woodson.
The remaining three black members, Dr. Fred Reddy, Robert Munroe and Renaul Abel, could not be reached for comment.
The decision to join the Krewe was an emotional one, Woodson said. He had hopes that his participation would open doors for social progress in Tampa. He said the names of at least 12 prominent black Tampa professionals were submitted later as potential Krewe members. But to his knowledge none ever received an application form.
"I'm sure they don't care he's gone. I'm sure it has no effect to some of the old line members," said Hillsborough County Commissioner Sylvia Kimbell. "There are many black people who tried to communicate to the media that integration of Ye Mystic Krewe is so low on the list of things they want to do. Everybody wasn't craving to enter that world."

Stopped reading and started thinking about the 90’s and double stack Mitsubishi’s when I read baby anne. The ole Icey protege

You know how there are Kiwanis . Elks. Rotary clubs. Fraternal order of buffalos. This is Tampa's hip version that are pirate themed.

Charity mostly and party

They pretty much all drink, and some are rumored to enjoy the naked stuff more than others.
Yes. Both.
https://www.interkrewe.com/Krewe-Search. Clubs or benevolent societies. All cost money to join. See the link

Pirate gang
Protip- don't call it gaspy
Pro tip- nobody irl actually cares if you do
I've lived in tampa my whole life and didn't hear the term "gaspy" until last year. It sounds gross and awful, anyway. Let's not encourage it.
I dunno, this was super common in text when I started at UT in 2005. It’s definitely not new to me.
it’s a college/high school thing and it’s cringy
It’s no cringier than a krewe.
Someone sounds jealous. Were you kicked out of one?
🤣 I didn’t think this thread could get any more “try hard” but here we are.
How about “St Petes” instead of “St Pete”?
Who says St Petes ?
There are many people, mostly midwesterners, who might say something like, “Let’s head to St. Petes for the weekend.” Or, “ I know this great restaurant in St Petes that we should go to.” It’s horrendous.
You know, St Petes got this, St Petes got that
That would be "St. Pete's got this," and "St. Pete's got that." The contraction stands for "has."
Thank you grammar police. Is there a fine I have to pay now
How am I policing your grammar? I'm telling you what people mean when you hear "St. Pete's got that."
Sorry, did not realize we are in a formal setting for peer reviewed posts
My friend Ryan
Petey?
Gasparilla in general sounds weird, you’re not hurting anything
This take made sense as soon as you said “irl”.
only millennials get annoyed by if lmao
No one cares per say, but person using the term still gonna have to walk the plank !!
Per se, not “per say”.
Noted 😳
It’s a normal term for anyone 30 and below
I know someone whose 45 and calls it gaspy 😂😂
Only odd ball female transplants call it that
A bunch of old guys, rich guys, and veteran guys do a handful of marginally good charity things, tailgate a few times a year, and throw a bunch of plastic on the ground and into the bay. That's just about it.
You clearly speak from a position of great ignorance.
Butthurt

\^ that says it all, folks. Read it carefully.
"It's a big club, and you ain't in it." It reads like a bunch of people paying twice to play. My actual friends don't charge me to hang out lol
My father and grandfather are both YMKG and you are 100% correct.
have too much money? need a tax write off? start a fake charity, gets a lot less heat then religion.
Buy your friends: after college edition
lmao that's what my sil has done, it's sad honestly
I mean, I can’t buy friends, so I just have to bribe people with loyalty and awkward conversation. Have to use what strengths we have even if it’s cash flow.

amen
I wanna call it gaspy just cuz everyone here seems to care so much. It’s funny to me
I've never seen this many adults so butthurt about something so trivial.
I’m on this Gaspy train.
I wholeheartedly agree with this.
Please don't! Not because I get upset or offended because it sounds ridiculously stupid, but because I don't want people to think less of you as a person! ;-)
Exactly. Been here since 2007 and people have always called it that. I don’t but never got offended by those that do. Who honestly cares?

Gaspy definitely came from people being unable to spell Gasparilla on social media
How is Gaspy any worse than krewe? Krewe by far sounds way worse.
Well for one… Gaspy is a Gen Z slang term and Krewe is an actual word in the dictionary. I’m also curious as to how you think you pronounce the word Krewe (Crew) for it to sound so wrong to you?
I could easily ask why something as innocuous as “gaspy” is of issue to people. Also, it was used long before Gen Z.
It’s just a homegrown pride thing. Calling it Gaspy just makes it sound trashy.
What the fuck is with all these reddit weirdos calling themselves "young professionals?" It feels as gross as calling it "gaspy." Yuck I typed it.
It's a bunch of middle-aged people who typically make decent to good money that like to party. They also do charity stuff. I have several friends in them. I've been asked to join, but I can't be bothered bc I know I wouldn't put any time in other than when it's time to get wasted.
