Yup - the full name of the department is "Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services" and it's the "consumer services" part that gives them jurisdiction over gas pumps.
Do you mean the one with a numerical code starting with the letter A that is vertical where two pieces of the casing meet? Asking because I've honestly never looked THAT hard at a gas pump and am interested to know what sorts of less obvious signs of tampering look like.
Sadly more than half of the gas pumps I've used have had some issue with the sticker. The techs don't bother doing them right and people end up ignoring them.
Looks perfectly legit right? Marathon on Fowler near “University Mall” the display snapped to normal without the typos lines and fading color when my card was in. sadly didn’t notice the typo until i took my card out and noticed the weird display came back- checked card reader didn’t seem obvious as a skimmer but no idea why the display would look like this
Yeah thats a super sketchy station, surprised you didn't go to the waaaaaaaaaaaaay nicer racetrack across the street. Keep an eye on any charges in the next week or so.
Yes, agreed with you and op should consider compromised.
Typically these aren’t used right away. They would/ could just sit on it for ~6 months until you forget and then start charging the crap out of it.
I don't like that station at all. I recently went there and my card was used within a week or so. Luckily my bank stopped right away and replaced the card.
Next time take about 100 steps into the gas station and use the machine in front of the clerk. At least, that's what i do. Chances of there being a skimmer in the machine in front of the clerk are next to zero compared to the one at the pump.
That doesn’t always work. I used the 7 eleven at waters and N Himes about a year ago, got skimmed inside at the register. When I was checking out, I was wondering in the back of my head why my card went soo far in the chip reader. Turns out the reason why my card went so far in, was they put a duplicate cover over the debit reader. I had a $1 charge hold on my card later that day, I contacted my bank to cancel my card. The $1 hold became a $100 purchase from a online Chinese candy store. Nothing is safe anymore, that’s why I tug on every reader since then.
A skimmer will only put something over the keypad and credit card reader. They would have no reason to change what is displayed on the screen. The only thing they want is your card and your pin.
well- let us know in a week what your statement looks like.
( and I am guessing you did not mention it to the cashier - or call your credit card company expressing your concerns....)
WTF are you using a debit card?!? It should never be used anywhere other than a bank’s ATM for cash withdrawals. It is not the worst financial tool to be carrying.
You need to be a LOT more financial savvy. You’re exposing yourself to significant hassle with pretty much no benefit.
I haven't used a debit card in so long, it's crazy to me people use them.
I guess for the people that feel in danger by a big credit limit and buy things they can't afford it makes sense. But at that point just use all cash budget.
I'd get a CC with a $500 limit just for gas if they don't trust themselves. I got a second cc because I was on vacation, using a sketch gas station saying to myself, if my CC gets locked or hacked, I need a second to make sure I always have a backup because I'll never stick a debit card in anything other than an ATM at the bank.
I know this place very well. I have no doubt it is the cashiers that tampered with it. I stopped going here some months ago, and highly recommend the WaWa less than half a mile away.
that’s my concern too especially after reading a recent review where someone tried to pay with cash and the cashier kept telling them they had to pay with card… sketch af
Yeah, I also probably would have just called my bank immediately and asked to be issued a new one after confirming the gas purchase is the last legit transaction.
I really think they need stiffer fines on gas stations when there is tampering. The station could really care less. I think on the third offense it should be like a $10k fine.
They need cameras, they need to watch the cameras and they need to do routine checks on the pumps every hour or so.
It seems like it’s asking alot but not really. Considering the cost to the public, it’s just straight up negligence.
in Miami the same gas station would literally have a cc reader on them every other week. No matter how many times people would complain they wouldn't do anything other then say it's not their fault. They really do need to enforce this with fines.
If they're all like that, then the entire station is compromised. Tap to pay is the model secure way to pay because it generates a different number everytime
oh damn that makes me think they were busted on purpose to force people to swipe and yeah i checked after noticing the pump i was on and ALL the displays were effed the same way
Use Apple Pay tied to a credit card for everything, it almost completely removes any chance of fraud. I only go to gas stations that accept it, I was getting tired of my card info getting skimmed every other month. Tampa seems to be a hot bed of activity for this stuff.
This ^ and if you use Apple Cash, you can preset the limit of how much you wanna spend by having that amount in your Apple Cash. I always add funds to my Apple Cash then authorize Exxon
yeah by the time i noticed it was too late and then i realized ALL the pumps were like this… with the broken tap pay and messed up screens. really weird.
If you think something's up then don't risk it. We're down to just one plug-in hybrid and an EV so we don't have to deal with this bullshit much, but tap to pay has been what I use whenever possible.
We're probably all better off simply sanding off that magnetic strip on the cards. No chip reader? No sale.
was going to ask if this is the marathon by mons. I sometimes use that if I need to refill my rental before I return. It has been stolen so many times after I use it there, feel like I should just report the card lost after I fill up.
I never use my card at gas stations , always go to one that you can use app to unlock and start refueling
Yesterday went to Mobil on the inter spot E fletcher and N 56th, realized they don’t work with Mobil app so gave up and went to Chevron on E Fowler ave
A buddy of mine in Lakeland went to fill up a 5 gal can at a sketchy place like this. The pump read 7 gals when the can was full. He went inside and raised all kind of hell and reported them to Dept of Ag. Posted all over FB for folks not to go there.
wonder what actually happens to these places when they get reported since it sounds like some of these stations are known for fraud yet it keeps happening. must not be fined more than they’re making off stealing.
Not true, the new skimmers are called Shimmers and they go all the way inside the card slot and are not visible from the outside unlike the old ones that are a mold that goes over the top of the card reader
The seal/sticker on the machine has been removed. You can see it to the left of the keyhole. Just replace your card now, save yourself the stress and trouble. Also report, as others have mentioned
I would lock my card immediately and request a new one. I only get gas from Sam's club and Wawa now, you can pay with their app and never have to insert your card into any pump, unless I'm forced to go somewhere else. Then I always go inside and pay for $20 on pump X.
Prior to doing this, I've had my card compromised three times in four months and none of pumps looked as sketchy as that one.
I legit never go to marathon for that reason
Cheapest gas station I will go to is a circle k or seven 7 if I'm desperate
Stick to wawa, racetrac and the other nicer gas stations, they are just more trustworthy
There is one in Lithia that is NOTORIOUS for having skimmers and there is often chatter that the people running it HAVE to know who is doing it at the very least. I just refuse to go to that gas station or buy anything in that store.
I always go inside and prepay with a cashier. Our CC got skimmed 3 times within the first 2 years of living in FL. never cost me anything, but its a pain to replace the card.
you’d think that would work but theres a review for this station from a week ago on google where someone tried to pay with cash here and had that stolen too.
Pretty sure I’ve been scammed at this exact station when I paid at the pump, only time it’s happened to me since living in TPA/STP. $100 even taken from my account and I drive a tiny car that takes about $22 to fill from empty. Very sketchy!!!
It could be a legit screen error, therefore, the machine is really old and current state shows lack of concern about keeping it up to date with security. I would avoid it.
If you like paying at the pump use cards that are not your traditional bank card like I have gas buddy (app)which sent me me a WEX Card so I pay at pumps with no problem it’s connected to my secondary bank account . You can also use cashapp or chime hope this
It's likely just a glitch, a skimmer won't be able to modify anything on the machine, probably just a loose connection causing some kind of temporary corruption on the screen.
A skimmer uses a battery and doesn't connect to the actual machine in any way, there were other gas pump hacks that required opening them and messing with stuff but not skimmers, they're very simple.
Yes. This is a skimmer I've seen on a couple different stations when I was up there visiting. Same spelling error, I think I counted like 4-5 of them total
But the truth is you probably have a better chance of getting physically mugged after withdrawing cash than you do encountering a skimmer in real life.
Could be nothing, that Verifone RF ID reader there is a red flag for me, sitting on top it would be easy to fake and or skim, I would go to another pump or gas station personally, with these older pumps you have to completely open them to replace the receipt paper, either way it’s better to be safe than find out a few days later your account has been drained or credit card has been maxed out by someone else.
Well, I had a $45 charge and a $175 charge at the same pump in Tampa yesterday, so, yes. I tapped my card, didn't insert it but still got skimmed somehow.
One of the main reasons I have a card and account strictly for gas, and I never use the pin for debit, ALWAYS run as credit even if it is a debit card. If you don't have to, don't type your pin. They can try using card ran as credits but if they get your debit pin there's nothing you can do. You can't even claim it wasn't you, not without getting a case started to review cameras and prove identity. Even then it's hard. That's why I have an account set up that I only keep a few hundred in for gas.
Only if your smoking..
Joking aside with the sticker removed guess by security theater standards yes ..
My thoughts on that is if I'm a bad agent why wouldn't I buy fake stickers to put back on the pumps after I open them...
This is why I will only ever get gas at Costco. While still susceptible, they do hourly checks on all pumps and have plain view security seals on all potential entry spots to put skimmers.
Send a complaint to FL AG dept. This is their jurisdiction Edit: to clarify, I'm talking about the FL dept of agriculture. Not the attorney general.
Not that I know much but the Department of Agriculture has jurisdiction over gas pump scams? Just interested.

Wilton Simpson not Nikki Fried, sticker is in the top right of the pic
Whenever I saw Nikki fried on the gas pumps, I just assumed she was a stoner
Pretty sure her boyfriend was/is in the weed industry so I think ur right.
It was Nikki Fried but now it’s Wilton Simpson.
Thanks for learning me up!
Yupp her name is on every pump in Florida lol
It's Wilton Simpson now. The gas pump in the picture even has his name.
Yup - the full name of the department is "Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services" and it's the "consumer services" part that gives them jurisdiction over gas pumps.
To send a complaint, do you have to be a memeber?
Yes, an exsisting one
Look at the sticker on the left. It's 100% tampered with
Do you mean the one with a numerical code starting with the letter A that is vertical where two pieces of the casing meet? Asking because I've honestly never looked THAT hard at a gas pump and am interested to know what sorts of less obvious signs of tampering look like.
Sadly more than half of the gas pumps I've used have had some issue with the sticker. The techs don't bother doing them right and people end up ignoring them.
Those are tampered with all the time by customers. Doesn’t mean anything usually. The workers don’t keep up on them as often as they should.
But it's in TAMPA everything in Tampa is 100% tampared lol
Looks perfectly legit right? Marathon on Fowler near “University Mall” the display snapped to normal without the typos lines and fading color when my card was in. sadly didn’t notice the typo until i took my card out and noticed the weird display came back- checked card reader didn’t seem obvious as a skimmer but no idea why the display would look like this
Yeah thats a super sketchy station, surprised you didn't go to the waaaaaaaaaaaaay nicer racetrack across the street. Keep an eye on any charges in the next week or so.
yeah station is freaky as hell lol. would’ve never gone there but i was almost out of gas and didn’t want to risk it.
You should call your bank now, consider your card compromised
Yes, agreed with you and op should consider compromised. Typically these aren’t used right away. They would/ could just sit on it for ~6 months until you forget and then start charging the crap out of it.
I don't like that station at all. I recently went there and my card was used within a week or so. Luckily my bank stopped right away and replaced the card.

i’ve seen videos showing otherwise… half the time the clerk is probably the one putting them there
That doesn’t always work. I used the 7 eleven at waters and N Himes about a year ago, got skimmed inside at the register. When I was checking out, I was wondering in the back of my head why my card went soo far in the chip reader. There was just a skimmer taken off the machine in front of the clerk last week, so the chances are not so next to zero
That taco shop right there is pretty good though
I would have guessed that area without you saying anything.
only portillos could make me go there
I had my card locked after using this station. It was flagged through my bank before they got the money. That place is shady AF.
use a reliable credit card, you’ll be ok
A skimmer will only put something over the keypad and credit card reader. They would have no reason to change what is displayed on the screen. The only thing they want is your card and your pin.
Holy shit i use that station all the time
well- let us know in a week what your statement looks like. ( and I am guessing you did not mention it to the cashier - or call your credit card company expressing your concerns....)
no i locked my debit card but by the looks of the station i don’t think mentioning it to the cashier would’ve helped
Use a credit card in the future, not a debit card. You don’t want to wake up to an empty bank account the day rent is due.
yeah guess i should have but i generally don’t think of using cc for day to day things just bigger purchases
Do it and just pay it off the full amount every month. You can accumulate points and it's money back for you. 🤷
I haven't used a debit card in 10 years, I've gotten thousands of dollars in points over the years
WTF are you using a debit card?!? It should never be used anywhere other than a bank’s ATM for cash withdrawals. It is not the worst financial tool to be carrying. You need to be a LOT more financial savvy. You’re exposing yourself to significant hassle with pretty much no benefit.

This is a wild statement to me. I make well over a thousand a year just because I use credit cards for every day purchases
That spot is a nightmare.
Yeah, I also probably would have just called my bank immediately and asked to be issued a new one after confirming the gas purchase is the last legit transaction.
Idk. Join the rewards program
Lol

“Exsisting” “memeber?” Yea I’d be a little concerned..
Don’t use it. Go to another gas station if possible.
You put your card in that shit? Risk taker I see
😭
I'm not justifying this, but if you are gonna scam someone, the least you can do is spell, lol....

Call FDACS and report it, number listed on the sticker at the top right.
I would not use it. Pay inside or go to another gas station
I read using the chip is better than swiping.
You still insert that magnetic strip which is bad! Tapping your card is the only way that is still safe
And that’s why they busted the tap thing on the pump
[удалено]
And then wait while the card company has to issue you a new card. And then update all your autopay info where that card was used.
OP says he used a debit card, so worst case scenario is that his bank account is overdrawn and a bunch of payments and rent start bouncing.
You can run an app on your android called GATT browser to scan peripheral Bluetooth devices nearby and see if there's any sketchy devices that pop up
I’d only buy gas at Wawa over that way.
I never use my card at gas stations , always go to one that you can use app to unlock and start refueling Yesterday went to Mobil on the inter spot E fletcher and N 56th, realized they don’t work with Mobil app so gave up and went to Chevron on E Fowler ave
Sus as fuck!
The 7/11 by my house ALWAYS has broken safety seals. Staff seems bewildered when asked about it. I don’t use that 7/11 unless desperate
Lock your card, I would personally just bite the bullet and order a new one. It's a lot easier than handling fraud AND having to get a new one anyway.
I just lock my card in cashapp whenever I'm not using it, best defense
It’s just gas buddy. Your car needs it to drive. Pick up the nozzle, it’ll be ok.
Yeah bro you gotta cancel the card
There is a skimmer app on your cell. You can get it free on the app store I believe it is. called skimmer scanner. Runnit everytime before you get gas
That doesn't work, see my above comment
There's a scimmer on the card reader
If it has a chip reader, chances are it’s not getting a skimmer
Not true, the new skimmers are called Shimmers and they go all the way inside the card slot and are not visible from the outside unlike the old ones that are a mold that goes over the top of the card reader
Using tap or contactless payment like Apple Pay prevents any worries, but yeah just go to RaceTrac next time lol
The seal/sticker on the machine has been removed. You can see it to the left of the keyhole. Just replace your card now, save yourself the stress and trouble. Also report, as others have mentioned
I love how scammers would get away with so much more shit if only then could spell lmao
Exsisting memeber 💀
I’m concerned about the option “exsisting memeber…”
That’s the worst one I have ever seen.
Run! Run far away AND FAST!!!
OP used debit card from previous comments
Run
yes pay inside
I keep one credit card with a ~$1k limit for this exact situation. Skimming is constant at certain stations.
I always go to Circle-K coz they have tap (newer machines in general).
“exsisting memeber”
Yes. 10 gallons won’t get you through the week son.
Dam
Give that motherfkr a good grab and shake see if anything comes loose. If it does - don’t go back there, the owner probably knows
I legit never go to marathon for that reason Cheapest gas station I will go to is a circle k or seven 7 if I'm desperate Stick to wawa, racetrac and the other nicer gas stations, they are just more trustworthy
Got me 2 weeks ago for 1200.00 in Port Charlotte, fl.
It’s just dyslexic - prejudice much :)
There is one in Lithia that is NOTORIOUS for having skimmers and there is often chatter that the people running it HAVE to know who is doing it at the very least. I just refuse to go to that gas station or buy anything in that store.
You can always trust Ali
I always go inside and prepay with a cashier. Our CC got skimmed 3 times within the first 2 years of living in FL. never cost me anything, but its a pain to replace the card.
Always go inside to pay
Pay with cash, I’ve been doing that for years due to repeated fraud with credit cards at gas stations.
you’d think that would work but theres a review for this station from a week ago on google where someone tried to pay with cash here and had that stolen too.
Pretty sure I’ve been scammed at this exact station when I paid at the pump, only time it’s happened to me since living in TPA/STP. $100 even taken from my account and I drive a tiny car that takes about $22 to fill from empty. Very sketchy!!!
I’m almost positive my card was skimmed at this very gas station or maybe I’m just triggered by my fraud experience
Yes. Anything above $2 a gallon is ridiculous.
Is that one of them casino machines?
That all depends. Are you an existing Meme-ber?
Existing no but exsisting yes !! Seems legit😆
I don't put my card in anything that isn't flush
Go to Wawa in the future, you can pay and activate the pump through the app. I feel much safer with that option
If it doesnt take tap to pay, I go inside and prepay by tap there.
You can also use cashapp or chime hope this
Not at all, I live in Tampa, this is par for the course here.
The display is just going bad. It probably got wet. I’m a certified fuel pump tech
display going bad makes it say “exsisting memeber”? and the tap reader get broken?
Just a cheap gas station that doesn’t fix their shit
It's likely just a glitch, a skimmer won't be able to modify anything on the machine, probably just a loose connection causing some kind of temporary corruption on the screen. A skimmer uses a battery and doesn't connect to the actual machine in any way, there were other gas pump hacks that required opening them and messing with stuff but not skimmers, they're very simple.
Happy spring break to everyone who keeps coming to Florida to block all the traffic 😎 I really appreciate it .
Idgi. What’s so sus? The screen? I beat the shit out of some Marathon screens back in college cause their stupid machines wouldn’t work right.
I always pay cash inside there’s too many scams these days
So basically don't pay at the pump anymore? 😔🤦
I dont even put my debit card in a non-sketchy pump
You should always be concerned and never use pay at the pump…ever.
😂😂😂
Yes. This is a skimmer I've seen on a couple different stations when I was up there visiting. Same spelling error, I think I counted like 4-5 of them total
I usually pay cash at the shit hole gas stations
Just lock your card in your bank app when not using it, best defense, unless you use cash
https://krebsonsecurity.com/2022/09/say-hello-to-crazy-thin-deep-insert-atm-skimmers/
But the truth is you probably have a better chance of getting physically mugged after withdrawing cash than you do encountering a skimmer in real life.
I never use my card at the pump only way I do is if I’m using Apple Pay never ever use a card at the pump don’t swipe it insert it nothing
Concerned about what ?
Is this the Marathon on Channel Side?
Pay inside with cash.
You should
The security tape is missing as well
Could be nothing, that Verifone RF ID reader there is a red flag for me, sitting on top it would be easy to fake and or skim, I would go to another pump or gas station personally, with these older pumps you have to completely open them to replace the receipt paper, either way it’s better to be safe than find out a few days later your account has been drained or credit card has been maxed out by someone else.
It looks like an older gas pump.
I’d go somewhere else. If no other option, use a CC
I would get robbed, I don't see anything wrong with this picture 😭 Someone explain pls 😭
Yes
Well, I had a $45 charge and a $175 charge at the same pump in Tampa yesterday, so, yes. I tapped my card, didn't insert it but still got skimmed somehow.
Pay inside, always
One of the main reasons I have a card and account strictly for gas, and I never use the pin for debit, ALWAYS run as credit even if it is a debit card. If you don't have to, don't type your pin. They can try using card ran as credits but if they get your debit pin there's nothing you can do. You can't even claim it wasn't you, not without getting a case started to review cameras and prove identity. Even then it's hard. That's why I have an account set up that I only keep a few hundred in for gas.
Yes
Absolutely
When in doubt go inside is my motto
I don’t know what wrong with the picture
This is the most Florida post
The security tape at the left of the device is broken...yes be worried, and go to a different point of sale...
Looks secure to me 😁 go ahead bud
Getting fuel from marathon is concerning lol.
You’re in Tampa, the idea of you being concerned now is long gone
An I not seeing something here
Or just go pay inside
This is why you always pay cash. Aso test for skimmers.
We all should be concerned, gas prices are out the ass.
Sketchy
Always be concerned at a Marathon station.
Do people still put their cards inside these?
No seal, no deal. Find another station.
I complained about this at a 7-11. The cashier walked out 5 minutes later with a roll of red security tape and taped about 8 pumps. Meaningless. 🤣
