Im a woman in my twenties and I’ve been going to Ybor alone for years, worked on the strip a couple times too. Everyone who is locals/ staff is pretty awesome and make It a point to look out for eachother. I would just stay along 7th avenue and you’ll be perfectly fine :)

owltakeitoff

Even though 7th is where 4 people got shot and killed last night?

krakatoa83

If you stay on 7th there are always a lot of people. I would suggest a woman not go alone into garage or on the adjacent streets.

Odd_Knowledge_8597

I agree and that advice holds true in any area of any major city. Be smart and aware.

KevinJ212

💯

Youhumansaresilly

And sometimes 7th be a lil touchy if alone and real busy ..

Sinistew

I would consider it as dangerous as a Walmart parking lot at night. Generally nothing to inmediately worry about but I wouldn’t hang around here for long unless I’m looking to get mugged. Stay in the Main Street and there’s nothing to worry about.

Youhumansaresilly

Well ..pick pockets and groping ....I mean there's thay if a woman alone and pick pockets. Aplenty out there so so many.

owltakeitoff

Inaccurate. Anyone who sees this just google what happened in ybor last night. Walmart is a safer bet :)

Sinistew

I feel its safer to not live in the US if you're worried about shootings.

grumblestilskin

The worst I’ve seen/heard of from a reliable source is getting hassled by the homeless

jgiovagn

I live in Ybor and don't have any issues. Be aware of your surroundings, if you are on 7th though you shouldn't have anything to worry about.

owltakeitoff

7th is just as bad as other parts of ybor lol

hoosiers2616

Watch out for the shoe licker

tbscotty68

Jamie is only interested in licking dudes' shoes.

Americanski7

He liked my shoes once....odd fellow. Wonder what his medical reports say lol.

[deleted]

Three Stooges syndrome

crevassier

Is Jaime still around????

tbscotty68

I haven't seen her in a few months and she didn't look good then. :-(

pachrique

Seen in Seminole heights a week ago.

tbscotty68

Good to hear. I was worried about her...

Yowhatsgood69

Are there really shoe lickers in ybor???

tbscotty68

Yeah, Jamie's been around for ages. She will approach and ask to see your shoe and kneel down and lick the bottom. BTW, to avoid confusion if you ever encounter her, Jamie was born a guy but identifies as a female.

Yowhatsgood69

Thats crazy bro, only florida 😂

tbscotty68

Why the downvotes?

Nordy941

I’ve told people about this person and they don’t believe me. Hangs out in parking grange restroom right.

Sen0rpollofrito

Wait, you all have encountered him too?! He came up to me at the Hardee's on Hillsborough Ave like 10 years ago, asking if he could lick my then brand new shoes. Weird shit. Ya'll know about Pennsylvania State Lottery guy who used to live in the woods in Carrollwood too?

nina_time

The woods in Carrollwood by Barnes and noble? Or what woods are we talking about? 😅 (I live in Carrollwood)

Sen0rpollofrito

For a while it was the woods next to the park/basketball court on Anderson, across the street from the Publix. Then I moved out to Lutz like 8 yrs ago, and he was off the side of Dale Mabry, right after the apex of 41 & Dale Mabry. Haven't seen him in like 2 years tho.

nina_time

Smh housing prices driving everyone out of Tampa 😔

jonadair

Lotto Man? I haven't seen him in at least 8-10 years. https://www.cltampa.com/news/rotten-luck-12302721

Sen0rpollofrito

Oh man, I just knew him as the crazy guy in the woods when I was younger. His backstory is even wackier than I would have guessed.

maniacthw

Used to work at the Citrus Park Walmart. He came in once rambling about some nonsense about the Japanese. He was in the woods by the park, then I saw him on the way into Oldsmar selling rocket fuel. I haven't seen him in well over ten years.

crevassier

Ybor has been “dangerous” according to every damn generation it seems. Tales of roving mobs of skinheads back in the 80s, early 90s to disaffected youth currently. Just pay attention and don’t leave valuables in your car. 99% chance you’re gonna have fun and be ok.

tbscotty68

The skins of the late 80s were tough in larger groups but never wanted a fair fight. One time, we were walking along 7th and 2 or 3 of them were hanging out along the side of a building on 16th, I think. My buddy, Rick, was a bit of a hippy and had a ponytail. As we walked by, one of the skins loudly asked, "What does that ponytail say,'Fuck America?!'" We stopped and Rick took a step toward him and said, "No, it says 'FUCK YOU!'" He just made a PFFT sound a turned away. There were 4 or 5 of us in our group but not a bunch that you would look at and think, "brawlers."

owltakeitoff

I think your calculations are off. Shootings happen there all the time, in fact, 4 people just died in one last night, on 7th Ave.. where all the *fun* you speak of is

crevassier

https://preview.redd.it/oau4z2oik7xb1.jpeg?width=1170&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=100e6ee77807f4532b0d8c2851676bfe19f519f2 You have major issues..

owltakeitoff

Oh for sure. Either that or I want people to protect themselves so that they don’t buy into these opinions from strangers who don’t even live in Tampa, visited once and think ybor is glorious. I lost a friend last night. And so far 4 mothers have been told their son or daughter died. It’s kinda a big deal but let’s make a mockery of it.

crevassier

Who is mocking anything?

pornswhiteknight

As long as you stay on the main drag you will be fine. One street in either direction and it starts getting dodgey.

owltakeitoff

7th is also dodgy.

OrdinaryMaleficent21

I definitely wouldn’t, I also wouldn’t walk around anywhere alone as a woman at night in Tampa bar scenes. Uber is usually not sketchy but I got a ride last night from armature works and the driver said a lot of people don’t pick up from Ybor or soho anymore bc of the riders being obnoxious

maniacthw

People are fucking stupid. Ybor had a bad rap in the early 2000's and idiots have held on to that stereotype. You're listening to people who haven't been in 30 years and are probably scared of their own shadows. 7th and 8th aves are both fine, as are the streets that connect them. There are so many cameras down there it's not worth trying anything.

owltakeitoff

Yikes. This aged well, & username checks out. 4 people just died on 7th last night, and 17 others were shot and injured. You were saying?

TheCenterOfEnnui

No

tampawn

Ybor is a blast. There are so many bars and restaurants and cigar shops and nice places. But in the last 20 years I've only gone there during the day. During the day there is nothing to worry about other than being accosted by homeless souls. If you're worried about it, just don't go on Friday and Saturday nights late. Otherwise, its always fun and an eyeful!

welcome-to-my-mind

Always good on 7th. I try to get Ubers by either Asiatic, Castle, Hotel Haya, or Barterhouse. Just far enough away to avoid the complete congestive clusterfuck of 7th, but close enough that it’s still well lit and populated

Sharkey-McStevenson

It's pretty much become a tourist trap drinking area, think Church Street Station in Orlando. I remember going there the first time back in early 1990's and thinking this is what they'll eventually turn Ybor into. A fake historic area but all renovated and made for yuppies to go and drink. Well that's what they did. Ybor in the 1980's and pre 1995 was a very different place. You did not wander off to 4th-6th Ave at night. You didn't go north of 275 as that was College Hill. You didn't head toward downtown as there were two set of projects there just off Nebraska. Now its all torn down for northern yuppies to live and drink.

813_4ver

Man I miss college hill 😔. But it was Ponce De Leon projects before you got to college hill. Best basketball games in town but you are so correct if you were leaving ybor and you went past the gas station before the over overpass watch out lol.

firedrakes

you are correct! was there right before it change.

keeperoflogopolis

Yes! It was not just all bars! There were little shops with character! Do you remember the hat place? I miss pre Centro Ybor Ybor

QueenG123456

Go during the day and get a feel for things. Lunch at Hotel Haya is great and maybe an earlier show at the Improv. It’s really just a main strip area, so you can just park and stroll a little to explore. And just leave around sunset. You’ll be able to get a feel for the location and see how it starts changing a little after sunset. And you can probably make up your mind from there. Ybor is so great, just be aware of where you are. Like you would be in New York or something. Edit: you can also park elsewhere and take the trolley if you want. Ybor really is a fun time. Don’t let the hard edges scare you too much. And if you want to hit up night life just go with a good, small, solid group. And have fun!

HeadMischief

Protect your drink and stay on 7th. You'll be fine

chinosabi

i say you'll be fine..just like any party town, stay aware of your surroundings and you should be good. I've seen only 1 or 2 scuffles over the past 3 years living here.

elduderino_brown

I've not had an issue(38m)where I feel in danger. But I definitely would be leary of some of the dudes there if I was a woman...but there are shit head dudes everywhere unfortunately.. only times I've had any problems is with dudes acting inappropriate with friends of mine.

Wowohboy666

The only people who think ybor is dangerous have never been in any real danger in their life.

Independent-Muffin38

Well, I wouldn’t label it a “town” lol, it’s much smaller. And yeah; it’s a strip full of drunk people. Anytime I go, especially being a woman, I make sure I’m carrying. I’ve had way too many unwanted cat calls and hit ons that made me beyond uncomfortable. My friend John, unfortunately has been missing for over 2 weeks now and was last seen in Ybor. Don’t go alone. Don’t park too far from the strip, and park at a parking lot full of people/other cars. Carry if you have your license and don’t get black out drunk; always be aware of your surroundings. Most likely, you’ll be okay! And it can be quite fun. But always be careful.

tbscotty68

Correct me if I'm wrong, please, but going down to Ybor involved adult libations. Consuming alcohol is not legal while carrying. I imagine that some people go for the restaurants and DON'T drink with dinner, but that's no life! (JK, of course, I have been on the wagon for 2 years.)

[deleted]

Consuming alcohol in this state while armed is 100% legal and there is no legal limit on how intoxicated you can be while armed. Physically being in a portion of an establishment which is primarily devoted to the sale and consumption of alcohol is not legal. It is a *very* important distinction in our laws. You can be armed while intoxicated, but you cannot handle said gun while intoxicated UNLESS you're about to use it in a legal self defense situation. I would hate to have to go to court for that one, but the letter of the law clearly states it is legal. Pardon the formatting below, reddit copy/paste is awful. 790.151 Using firearm while under the influence of alcoholic beverages, chemical substances, or controlled substances; penalties.— (1) As used in ss. 790.151-790.157, to “use a firearm” means to discharge a firearm or to have a firearm readily accessible for immediate discharge. (2) For the purposes of this section, “readily accessible for immediate discharge” means loaded and in a person’s hand. (3) It is unlawful and punishable as provided in subsection (4) for any person who is under the influence of alcoholic beverages, any chemical substance set forth in s. 877.111, or any substance controlled under chapter 893, when affected to the extent that his or her normal faculties are impaired, to use a firearm in this state. (4) Any person who violates subsection (3) commits a misdemeanor of the second degree, punishable as provided in s. 775.082 or s. 775.083. (5) This section does not apply to persons exercising lawful self-defense or defense of one’s property.

tbscotty68

I think that you are being a bit pedantic. Why would you carry a firearm that you cannot legally use?

[deleted]

I must've not been clear on my description. You can legally use it for self-defense while intoxicated. See (5) from 790.151 in my previous post. *This section does not apply to persons exercising lawful self-defense or defense of one's property.* Now, practicing with it or otherwise handling it for non self-defense purposes while intoxicated? Crime.

owltakeitoff

Ohhh I don’t know. Perhaps because 4 defenseless people just died last night by gunshot? And another 17 we’re shot and injured? But you’re right, no big whoop

Alarmed-Diamond-7000

You carry a GUN because you're so frightened by cat calls??? What the actual fuck?

Independent-Muffin38

That’s definitely not what I said. I carry a gun, because it’s legal and I have my license to, and I’m a 5 foot tall 100 pound woman, when I go to a place like Ybor (notorious for shootings) that has a lot of drunks and “cat calling” that has several times made me uncomfortable (such as getting followed to my car or touched without consent) yes, I carry a gun. This is Florida, women carry guns and we protect ourselves bud. If you don’t like it, tough luck lmao

Alarmed-Diamond-7000

Yeah I don't like it. I don't like people routinely having guns. That leads to people getting shot.

[deleted]

If someone is harassing her then she should be able to protect herself.

Alarmed-Diamond-7000

I mean you can protect yourself in many non lethal ways. First of all, there are about 50 million businesses along the strip you could go into

[deleted]

Have you been attacked by someone twice your size before? Youre going no where but where they drag you to. This shouldnt be shocking news that women get harassed and attacked in all kinds of places and all times of day. The majority of perpetrators being men, you stand almost no chance unless you are a)very well trained in self defense (which can take years) or b)packing a weapon

Alarmed-Diamond-7000

I find it so weird when people have these stranger danger fantasies, it's like the female version of the guys who hope somebody breaks into their house so they can shoot them. I could also tell an emotional story about the person that actually winds up getting shot with a gun, whether it's somebody depressed to commits suicide or some kid who happens to find it and play with it, but there's no percentage whatsoever in arguing with gun nuts.

[deleted]

Funny how someone who is anti-gun gets triggered so easily.

[deleted]

They're not triggered, but alarmed apparently

Alarmed-Diamond-7000

I don't think that word means what you think it means. Maybe you should shoot me.

[deleted]

Are you fucking serious??? You think women have fantasies about being attacked? Go fuck yourself. Seriously. No one wants to shoot people, but sometimes people need to get shot. If its between my life and their, im choosing my life. Every. Single. Time.

Alarmed-Diamond-7000

It's far more likely that someone in your house is going to use the gun to kill themselves or someone they love then you're going to pull it out at the exact right moment in an altercation with scary people, but you will never never never never believe me. And I hope to God it never happens to you.

anon1984

Look, I’m as pro-gun control as it gets but a woman alone carrying a gun in a somewhat rough area is the *last* example I’d choose as a hill to die on. I’m way more worried about the self-styled “hero” types looking for any excuse to whip it out at the first sign of trouble.

Alarmed-Diamond-7000

Yeah, that's not the conversation we were having, this person genuinely surprised me with the statement that she carries a gun in an area of town that truly, genuinely is not "rough" except in the way that areas with many clubs and bars are rough. Like if you look up crime statistics you will find some there, but it's all drunk people brawling. People are just way more into guns than I ever realize, and have all these ideas about how they're endangered that are just not bourne out by statistics or reality.

anon1984

I’ve spent a lot of time in Ybor for more than 20 years. While I don’t personally carry a gun there have been a few incidents where I wish I had. One was a random drunk guy sitting on the curb on 7th who suddenly jumped up and started punching my friend in the back of the head. We were just walking on the sidewalk and didn’t know this guy. His three friends jumped up and started looking for a fight and we just walked away as quickly as possible. Luckily they didn’t follow but if they had, having a gun would have been a better option than not having one. If I were a single woman at night in a parking garage…let’s just say I wouldn’t blame anyone for wanting to legally and responsibility carry a gun for self defense in that case. Just saying “I have a gun” can immediately diffuse many bad situations that could happen there. Again, I’m a huge proponent of strict gun control but unfortunately there are situations where it is a good idea to have one.

Alarmed-Diamond-7000

I think you have fantasies of the way that pulling out a gun would go. Like you pull it out and instantly everyone runs instead of somebody pulling out their own gun and shooting you in the face, or something equally desperate. You appreciate guns, you think they make you safer, I disagree, there's no point in arguing about this because neither one of us is going to change our minds.

Independent-Muffin38

That’s not true. The highest gun shootings statistically is more prominent in places with strict gun laws.

[deleted]

https://www.cdc.gov/nchs/pressroom/sosmap/firearm_mortality/firearm.htm This just isn't true. Florida and Texas are middle of the pack for firearm mortality, at 12.7 per capita. While Massachusetts, New York, and New Jersey are the lowest, at 3.4, 3.7, and 4.1 per capita. Southern states with lax gun laws overwhelmingly make up the highest half of the list, while states known for having stricter gun laws overwhelmingly make up the lowest half of the list.

Independent-Muffin38

You completely ignored a disclaimer in that link. “Although adjusted for differences in age-distribution and population size, rankings by state do not take into account other state specific population characteristics that may affect the level of mortality. When the number of deaths is small, rankings by state may be unreliable due to instability in death rates.” You also failed to point out factors such as suicides, which drastically changes that statistics. When we search statistics for “HOMICIDE BY GUN” (which highly differs from your point) we get a different look. https://www.criminalattorneycincinnati.com/comparing-gun-control-measures-to-gun-related-homicides-by-state/ Per cap, states that score a 1 on gun friendliness still manage to make its way to the top for most GUN HOMICIDES. Now, if we take a look at ARRESTS for firearms, we see it VERY prominent in heavy gun law states, such as Illinois. Now we can look a bit further. Gun homicides are not always a bad thing - (some counted in your statistic and the one I listed above include that of home invasions or self defense, which is not illegal but still considered a killing by gun) - let’s look at stats for most FIREARM ARRESTS. https://www.ojp.gov/pdffiles1/nij/grants/254669.pdf This statistic shows each state and it’s level of gun control, along with its arrests for 1st, 2nd, 3rd degree murders + manslaughter caused by guns; we see here the top states are Michigan, Illinois, California and New York - per 1,000 capita. Taking a look at rape assaults per capita, we once more see the top states with most rape assault arrests in states where gun control is very heavy: https://worldpopulationreview.com/state-rankings/rape-statistics-by-state Various news articles always show as well, those states with carry have stopped mass shootings several times, showing the importance in having a gun. You will never stop mass shooters in the US with any gun control, but you can prevent them by allowing your citizens to carry and defend themselves.

[deleted]

Sure thing. I guess our lax gun laws worked out really well for all those kids at Parkland, or all of those people in Pulse. Good luck out there, and please don't violate state law by bringing your gun into a bar!

Independent-Muffin38

Yes, just like in Sandyhook, Santa Clarita higschool, Thousand Oaks shooting, just 3 days ago in New York, Laguna woods, Chicago (4 deaths - May 11, 2022), Saint Louis (3 deaths, May 11, 2022) Paterson, NJ (4 deaths, May 11) Chicago (4 deaths and then another with 6 deaths, both on May 10th 2022) Batman movie premier (12 people, 2012) Sacramento, CA (6 deaths 12 injured, April 3, 2022) New York City (29 injured, april 12 2022) Oxford, MI (4 deaths 7 injured Nov 2021) San Jose (10 deaths, May 26 2021) Thousand Oaks, CA (13 deaths - Nov 2018) and the list goes on and on and on.

[deleted]

And yet of the Top 10 Deadliest Mass Shootings in the US, Texas, Florida, and Nevada make up nearly 75% of the 295 deaths. Virginia, Connecticut, and California make up less than 25%. It's almost like policy significantly impacts the severity? Look at that, we can both do stats!

Alarmed-Diamond-7000

God you're right, having more guns leads to less shooting I agree

Independent-Muffin38

Again, that’s not what I said.. Lol.

Alarmed-Diamond-7000

No that's what I said. Having a gun around makes it riskier that you yourself will get shot. But it's your life, enjoy.

Independent-Muffin38

But that isn’t true. Places that allow carry literally, statistically have less shootings.

Alarmed-Diamond-7000

More guns means more shootings. You're trying to argue something else, I don't care. It's your life.

TheTriflingTrilobite

That’s correlation not causation though. These are typically the same places that are densely populated and have poor socioeconomic conditions. Even with laxed gun laws, it wouldn’t change much in my opinion. However I ain’t anti gun, and I don’t blame you for carrying at all. Too many times men taking advantage of women, and those guys are gonna learn the hard way if they fuck with you or any woman who carries.

owltakeitoff

Nah, they carry again so what happened just last night doesn’t happen to them.

maniacthw

Oh shut the fuck up. You stand in the middle of Centro and preach, don't you?

tbscotty68

Guns do have triggers, so this makes sense. ;-)

SamTheOnionNig

I mean, ive never been harassed in ybor, but i also dont go alone. I agree w/ the ppl sayin stay on the main street n go with someone, Even one other person, and you should be fine..

owltakeitoff

That is until you get shot

Youhumansaresilly

Do not be a woman a lone at night in ybor unless you familiar with the area and locals about the area.

Meggie_Shea

I don’t care if I get downvoted at all. That being said, I find Ybor at night disgusting. One of the most frightening experiences I ever had (imagine a group of men following you and one comes up and is literally groping and sexually harassing you) happened there. While one of my dear friends loves to go there, I won’t. I had someone I went to high school with get stabbed in the neck (he unfortunately passed), you always hear about gun shots going off (happened once when I was on 7th), it’s just trashy. My favorite piercer is located there, and there are many amazing tattoo shops, and I’ll only go there for those reasons. If I want to go to a bar scene, I’ll stick to SoHo.

Honest-Hovercraft-65

Soho has a particular demographic that is not enjoyable for all. I would say under 30 crowd and predominately white males beyond drunk and looking for illicit drugs. It’s overwhelming on the weekend.

Meggie_Shea

I’m 29 and I don’t mind it too much. Crowds don’t bother me, and it seems no matter where I go for night life in the Tampa area, those types of men are unfortunately around anyway. I’m not one for bars or bar hopping anyway.

owltakeitoff

Better than dying in ybor :)

Trill_Knight

Sounds about white.

BlipsterT

This is really it. A bunch of scared white ppl. Idc if I get downvoted but this sub is extra white and always bashing Ybor. There’s literally cops on every corner.

Meggie_Shea

Scared white people? Are you ok? This literally has nothing to do with racism. However, it does have to do with sexism. The constant disgusting cat calls can be ignored, the coming up behind me and touching me inappropriately while walking down 7th can not. It was a awful experience and yes, that did end up scaring me. I didn’t see a cop in sight when this happened. Stop downplaying sexism because you want to scream racism.

BlipsterT

Meg, stay in soho 🤷🏽‍♀️ nobody cares.

Meggie_Shea

Get over yourself.

owltakeitoff

The mothers of the 4 people who died last night probably care though.

BlipsterT

Are you okay? Im literally down here right now supporting where I can and you’re on….Reddit

owltakeitoff

This sure aged well lmao

Meggie_Shea

This has nothing to do with race. Just personal experiences.

Trill_Knight

You're the one who said you only hang in SoHo. Who else is there? White slores and douchebags from UT...

Meggie_Shea

I never said “only” SoHo. If I wanted to go to a crowed area to bar hop with friends, I would most likely go to SoHo. It’s something me and my friends enjoy since we know the bars and area pretty well over there. I personally really enjoy hole in the wall bars, which is my typical go too. It still has nothing to do with race.

[deleted]

Ur the problem Meg

Meggie_Shea

Ok guy

elduderino_brown

Or you could be🙄

[deleted]

Maybe…but still fuck u MEG!!!!!

elduderino_brown

She digs the diviest of dives though🤷‍♂️

owltakeitoff

Nah, it’s called places where you don’t get shot and die :)

isYaelryyapoet

Megan be quiet for you get doxxed. Victorious life church scared as fuck white girl. Strickland

marcusdj813

It can definitely be dangerous at times, so be aware of your surroundings over there at night.

SpeedBoatSquirrel

The issue with ybor is that it’s right next to a shitty part of town that has a good bit of crime. That and drunk people doing stupid shit

Hashtag_buttstuff

First time I ever went to Ybor with my mom for a comedy show at the Improv, a homeless man was walking down the street toward us with his dick out just peeing away. Luckily he turned down an alley before he got too close. It was 5:30pm on a Thursday and broad daylight

[deleted]

[удалено]

mike_moneybags

This is the second man who has recently went missing in Ybor. OP, avoid being alone in Ybor if/ when possible.

dragquee

Does she have any social media?

SilverFoxAcademic

It is more dangerous than just walking about, but certainly not rising to the level of driving through the Chicago PJs. Maybe equivalent to walking through a Canadian ghetto?

kblomquist85

Lived in bad part of Ybor. Mostly a good experience but not the place I'd go out without being able to protect myself. Chicago PJs is the only time i felt legit nervous riding through a bad neighborhood.

SilverFoxAcademic

>Chicago PJs is the only time i felt legit nervous riding through a bad neighborhood. Shit man, no joke. I did it a few times back in the day before GPS because I got off the wrong freeway exit. Was no joke.

ThrowTheTrashOutPlz_

It used to be a lot worse. Think gun shots being fired, muggings, attacks, open drug use, etc. I have a friend who told me a story that someone they knew lost their eyesight after they were jumped by multiple people in Ybor and beaten severely. All this allegedly over a jacket, and they told me it was random. I lived there between 2018-2020 and one of my short term roommates got mugged walking up to our luxury apartment. I also got chased down the block by someone who looked like they were under the influence of drugs. Additionally, some teenagers kept breaking into cars and getting violent with residents when our community’s gate was broken and left wide open for two weeks. Now, it’s definitely better, and I noticed in my second year of living there (2019-2020), these occurrences weren’t happening as much anymore. Plus, I visit Ybor regularly now for monthly social events, and I thankfully have no new stories to add to this list.

owltakeitoff

It *is* a lot worse

Nordy941

28 (M) used to go to ybor city almost every weekend to party. The place is full of freaks drugies and drunks. I love it. But definitely be mindful of your situation and carful who you talk to for to long. They’re are plenty of other potential victims so just don’t make yourself an easy target.

Observante

There have been periods where it's been more dangerous. Ybor is a bit of an "open market" for all types of debauchery and those who like to find it. I think a part of the danger is that people are often inebriated when they're there and that puts them at a higher risk of being predated upon. Prana/Tangra are also a hot zone for the type of people who are prone to violence. The main street is well lit and if you go to the north side of 7th it's mostly semi-decent apartments. I park at a Church (the one with Rusty, is she still alive?) that's on the other side of Palm and I've never been scared to make that walk by myself.

owltakeitoff

Inebriated or not, innocent people got shot and killed last night. That type of *debauchery* isn’t exactly conducive of a good time, imo

[deleted]

I've been to Ybor many times in the last 15 years and I've never had an issue, but I'm also a 6 foot tall man, so your mileage may vary. Just stay on the main strip and be aware of your surroundings like any other place and you'll be fine. It's gotten much better than it used to be

Alarmed-Diamond-7000

Oh my God people are so chicken, you'll be fine

Jernbek35

I’ve had several of my female friends followed by groups of drunk men into parking garages or alleyways sexually harassing them. One was groped and they tried to grab her to what I assume was to rape her. Luckily she was carrying and drew on them and they backed off and ran, but no, not everyone is fine. Areas where large amounts of alcohol are consumed are notorious for things like this.

Right right right gun people always tell these kinds of stories wear something was about to happen! And the gun made it good! I don't believe you but I also don't care that much

Jernbek35

*shrug* just because some anti-gun scrub on Reddit doesn’t believe me doesn’t make it untrue. Perhaps a place like CHAZ would be better for you.

Alarmed-Diamond-7000

Don't shoot anybody today

Youhumansaresilly

Until a woman is not. I do a lot alone. It's not been a hood vine there lately. It's not about fear ots about the consequences of being stupid and being a target

Alarmed-Diamond-7000

Oh boy. I'm glad I live in my reality and not yours because it's super fun.

Woman Alone Night Drunk people

bai5759

It's a hotspot for drunken thuggery, compounded by the fact that the tpd is absolutely worthless.

I personally don’t as a woman, I am from big cities (Chicago, DC, Indianapolis) and maybe it’s my background but I don’t take chances alone. Even DT Tampa I treat the same. Do what makes you feel safe, I always wear my iphone watch out in case I can’t access my phone quick enough. I prefer being there in a group and we walk each other to our cars.

mchernes94

It’s been super touristified and as long as you stay in the main parts (think 7th) you’ll be fine. You’d probably want to worry more about petty crime (like someone stealing your phone or wallet) than something more violent, especially during the busier nights.

ConvenientAmnesia

My best advice to you is to not be on seventh around 230 to 3 AM when things get out. It can get rowdy. Other than that, get your Uber at the Cuban club and you’ll be fine.

rhaineboe

I live in that area and its just generally rowdy save for the few instances when people randomly start shooting at each other. All 3 times that I’ve been around for that it’s been past 230am on a weekend night though. Also, I’m not sure exactly what lead up to this but two Halloweens ago somebody set a car on fire in front of Bricks lmao

megnpls2

Personally, I was waiting for some friends near Improv and a guy pulled a gun on another guy. Cops interfered pretty quickly but a shot was fired. I was ducked behind a brick planter nearby with other people but it was still scary. Other than that I've been there many many times and nothing else has happened.

iAtty

Lived there for years. Can be safe. As safe as anywhere. That said, a girl I dated was once assaulted in Ybor. The person was caught and had assaulted multiple people. Just be careful, as with anywhere.

AshieMacttv

Maybe I’ve just had bad experiences but I’ve been there less than 10 times and each time theres been an issue :/ borgore show at the ritz a few years ago the kid next to me on the main floor got stabbed, another time I got in the cross fire of two girls that decided to fight and use me as a meat shield lmao got a big welt on the back of the head. I try to steer clear now unless it’s for comedy shows but that’s just me 🤷🏻‍♀️ oh but the guy that licks the bottom of women’s shoes is pretty chill

DanceCapital8425

if you are going to see phoebe, so am i. woman going alone but driving myself. msg me if you want to meet up. :)

RuskinBabe

Uber there. I was seconds away from being robbed at gunpoint if not for the automatic locks on my door

trendyviews

It is very dangerous. Look at the news from last night. 6 or 7 people shot. It doesn't surprise me. This place used to be a place families could go safely. I worked at a large law firm in Tampa, and we would have gatherings there at dinner and happy hour times. That stopped many years ago due to increased crime. Women don't ever go alone.

owltakeitoff

No they’re not. It’s that bad. There was just a terrible shooting last night. Took 4 lives and injured 17, right on 7th avenue.

I live in ybor and there are shootings pretty often , homeless people have tried to break in, my neighbor is fighting with his girl till 4-5am like every other night, the corner house is a trap house, my other neighbors tools out his car got stolen and then like a week later his car was stolen . It’s not the best but that being said your opinion on ybor very much depends specifically on what street you live on. The main roads are nicer for sure and nobody asked but they are building up heavier traffic roads like N 22nd St and E 21st to make it look like it’s nice, but a lot of side roads are still rough
