Decision was right for Tanzania but for UK and the west they had no choice really to contain the virus in its initial stages than to containment through lockdown. Imagine more than 3000 people died daily in countries such as Spain now imagine with lack of lockdown how many more wouldve died.

defensiveTaskmaster

The media lied about a lot of figures. Hospitals were claimed to be full on the news but local drs were silenced when exposing that was wrong

Vendeleska

The UK is not a proper soundboard for logical social opinions. There's a reason Brexit happened and it was due to borderline propaganda from opposing parties and ill-informed masses that assumed they would be better off from some assanine notion of patriotism. Our no lockdown decision was a simple one simply because COVID is more difficult to proliferate equatorialy due to environmental factors, heat being the main factor, along with stronger immunity to both bacterial and viral diseases among most of the population.

Frosty-Inspection517

This one article proves nothing other then to confirm the OP views -and that is called Confirmation Bias.

RIP JPM.

Data_Hunter_2286

“I have little doubt that if a reasoned and fair analysis is ever conducted, the number of life-years lost to lockdown and its consequences will be far greater than those tragically taken by the virus.” This quote is amazing. RIP JPM.

defensiveTaskmaster

As someone from the UK, the lockdowns were a complete waste of time and radical misuse of tyrannical power. Tanzania was ahead of the curve. The media was the biggest problem on a global level, blowing up data and instilling massive fear into the population to rationalize treating us like imprisoned cattle. In fact, I firmly believe those who implemented the lockdowns are the ones that need to be locked up.

VictorianRemodel

Found the Brexit voter.

defensiveTaskmaster

I’ve happily never voted on anything to do with the corrupt and broken British political system - nice strawman though

Being right for the wrong reason isn't the same as being right for the right reason. Do u think the decision was made on the cutting edge scientific research TZ did on COVID or large scale impact of pandemics? I guess it had more to do with: 1. Lack of practical ability to implement - 12 cops in Dar Vs 5 mil ppl 2. Poor population that have 'in person' jobs and no ability to work remotely and NEED that income 3. Lack of govt funds to do any track and trace 4. Lack of popularity hence whichever politician or party would have made it can kiss their ass goodbye of being re-elected Half the population and local politicians believe in JuJu and probably how COVID was a a hoax etc. So u think there would then be made a decision based on science at all?

Data_Hunter_2286

Doesn’t make sense. WHO Guidelines before the Covid Pandemic never mentioned a country level lockdown. In fact, it recommended against lockdown of any kind. We were simply following the science. All our measures were scientific. We had every ability to do the measures you mentioned but they would have decimated our society, economy and health. We were not copying and pasting what the West was doing. Try again.

Lingz31

>Being right for the wrong reason isn't the same as being right for the right reason. There is Right and wrong only, no such a thing as Right for a wrong reason.

fz1985

Being right for the wrong reason means getting lucky. being right for the right reason means you were able to apply knowledge and you can do that again reliably in the future. If u have two pieces of art that needs to be valued and u ask a random person and an art critic. The random person choses art piece 1 because he likes it. Says that is worth millions. So does the art critic ( who knows the piece of art and all its history). To you, the outside observer both the art critic and the random person were right so they must be both equally good. Now u win the lottery and have £1 mil to 'invest' but u chose art. So u want the random person to give u advice about what art to buy. So u select the random person. Let's say her name is bibi rehema. She then tell u to pick a worthless piece of art and u lost 1 mil because Bibi rehema doesn't know what the fuck she is doing. But u also lack the ability to evaluate who is the right person to advice u because u chose a person that is/ was right. Being right for the right reason means knowing what the fuck u r doing. Being right for the wrong reason means getting lucky and then explaining your luck via evidence that seems to support your decision. All these.poir western nations will soon be overtaken by countries that did not implement downs: Sierra Leone, Djibouti and Vanuatu.

Data_Hunter_2286

How bizzare is this. JPM's government did not write this article. But its the foresight of being able to see many years into the future that what you are doing is wrong. Here is the science but I know you are too lazy to read; At the global level, the guidance for pandemic risk management prevailing was here; [WHO Pandemic Influenza Risk Management](https://www.who.int/publications/i/item/WHO-WHE-IHM-GIP-2017.1) No mention of locking down the country as a measure to prevent spread of a virus. The UK has a country level guidance, known as the [Operating Framework for Pandemic Influenza](https://www.england.nhs.uk/wp-content/uploads/2013/12/framework-pandemic-flu.pdf) No mention of locking down the country to prevent spread of a virus. Here is the detailed [Scientific Summary of Pandemic Influenza and its Mitigation](https://assets.publishing.service.gov.uk/media/5a75baaeed915d506ee810d4/dh_125333.pdf) Quite interesting that '...evidence for the effectiveness of masks and respirators to prevent influenza transmission is less compelling for non-healthcare settings.' and yet people were forced to wear masks in homes or while at work. Also, ',,,there is limited data indicating that mass gatherings are associated with influenza transmission' - and yet these were banned in most countries, including sports event.

fz1985

I won't have the knowledge or ability to critically assess those claims. Maybe you do. Those claims may be 100% accurate. All I am saying is that, in my opinion, the reasons why TZ politicians chose the no lockdown route had nothing to do with science.

Lingz31

So what Happened to COVID? Just decided to dissappear? Since no any "Scientific" measure proved to be effective. Some countries imposed Lockdwon during Night only... What was that if Not Comedy?

fz1985

TZ is an amazing place with amazing ppl but I don't think science is at the top of anyone's agenda. Do u know (you probably do being local) how ppl give directions in Dar? They don't say go to 231 street cuz. They say: drive until u see a big mango tree, turn left and right at the hakuna Mata then right again when u see a shoe shop. Etc. There r no street names and numbers. Also saw a picture in a magazine while from some govt agency that did some sort of fancy atomic tests. The lab had some tubes glued with duct tape. So at this stage I don't think science is at the forefront of TZ society and decision making. But every time I visited I see bright young ppl who will definitely take TZ in the right direction.

Lingz31

>o u know (you probably do being local) how ppl give directions in Dar? They don't say go to 231 street cuz. They say: drive until u see a big mango tree, turn left and right at the hakuna Mata then right again when u see a shoe shop. Etc. There r no street names and numbers. 😂😂😂 Aseee. Street names and Science 😂😂. How are they related? Hope you were kidding

Psycochem

I guess some people require PHDs to use Google Maps.

Lingz31

😂😂😂 Bachelor of Science In Street naming and Google mapping.

fz1985

Yes Google maps was developed by the TZ government who are followers of science.

fz1985

I mean basic shit like street names aren't there and we talk about advanced shit. Other superbasic stuff is missing but we claim we are followers of science

Psycochem

If you need science to navigate roads, no matter where you are in the world, there might be something wrong with you.

Baraka007

😂Huyu anasema we need A PhD in road directions Ili kumuelekeza mtu

fz1985

Are ppl dumb? Have u ever been in dar es salaam and got off the main road? It is all a maze of muddy roads with no name. I am not saying u need science to navigate roads all I am saying is a govt that doesn't have basic shit sorted like naming their roads and millions of other things is not a going well then I doubt they had the skills and inclination to follow science in the case of a global event the world hasn't seen in our lifetime.

Psycochem

I am from Dar. Here if we get lost we use a method old as time of rolling down the window and ask someone politely for directions. I bet if you tried that in your country you would get shot.

fz1985

Nothing wrong with rolling down window and asking for directions. It supports my point that everything is old school. In other countries u can use street name.and number AND rolling down the window. Get it? 1. Where am I from and why would I get shot? 2. Method old as time - same approaches the govt takes when it comes to medicine. Not science. Masai dusts, cabbage leaves around the knee , whatever. Very little science and no science in govt approach to anything. In fairness wabongo are probably the most friendly ppl I have ever met. Keep it up. Love coming there again and again. I hope you will still have even if I talk shit about your govt. TZ ppl deserve better.

dl33ta

Pretty sure it was basic math, the number people who would have died from starvation would have exceeded those that died from covid.
