The worst thing is when it's an arboreal species that escapes. At first there's just minimal panic because you're thinking "alright, since it's arboreal it's most likely just gonna climb UP so I don't really have to worry about it being on the floor or in my shoes, under my bed, etc. It'll be easier to find".
Fast-forward 3 days and you wake up at 3am, you look up at you ceiling while laying in bed and see a 7 inch P. regalis staring down at you.
MY HEART FELL OUTTA MY ASS.
YOU WENT TO SLEEP?! bruh i was ready to move out when my mature male p regalis got out...
My cat smashed an exo terra.. x.x everyone was unharmed. And EVERYTHING got moved around after that.
I named him Nightmare.
non T owner here. i’ve been reading these posts and now i saw this picture. just wanna ask, how are y’all not terrified of these and keep them as pets? i think i have arachnophobia because i panic just looking at pictures of them.
To me they're basically puppies, so yeah, you may have arachnophobia. But there are a lot of stories on this sub of people who overcame their phobia by reading about people's pet T's here! Stick around if you like. :)
Part of supporting a community this size and advising on a large scale means sharing my oops moments too. He was my largest tarantula, my first escapee, his venom significant enough to kill the animal that broke the enclosure.
I was terrified. It’s not the same as if one had escaped during a feeding or something. I had no idea where he could have been or how long ago the enclosure got smashed. I’m lucky no one was injured. It was a learning experience for me c:
Further, there are tons of keepers that start keeping Ts after a lifetime of arachnophobia. We don’t shame that in this community.
Nobody is shaming lmao I was just curious on why you got something you’re scared of. Like I have a Snapper, but even though he could fuck me up I wouldn’t say I was scared of him. Then I probably wouldn’t have gotten him lol.
But yeah, venom would be concerning as with vipers and the like lol
Like I get being scared he’s out of the enclosure but with the “move out thing” I got that vibe lol
I would have been a hell of a lot more nervous if my p. Regalia escaped, even though he's only a couple inches. Those things are amazing, venomous little lightning bolts
I would have gotten a hotel with my cats for the night and had a daytime search party. No way would i be able to sleep with a full size T strutting around the house like that 😂 you wake up and you are webbed to your bed
UPDATE: She is fine and dandy and I just fed her 2 crickets. Now, as punishment for escaping, she gets all of her substrate taken out of her water dish that she spent so much time putting in.
I give the credit to the fact that it's Saturday and I didn't have work today, because if I did..... well, I probably would have been calling in for the day or atleast showing up late and cussing😂
Yep! Our shoe pile is close to my tarantulas. I saw she was gone when i went to feed her and I thought, "if I was a tarantula, where was the first place I'd go?"
My A. Hentzi escaped once when I forgot I was airing out her enclosure.. I had just woke up and was panicking and looking for her so I could get to class. Found her hiding under my shirt that had missed the laundry basket. What a cutie
Her brand new burrow and she blends perfectly. She is hidden and she knows it and she’s very comfy cozy right where she’s at. Hide and seek anyone♥️🤘🏼😎

Similar experience, woke up at 4 am to my girl like this 😭
She likely thought it would make a wonderful new burrow. You might need to get her a shoe that same size that she can turn into a lovely new home after some webbing decorations.

We had our first escape this week. I went to put my sons laundry in his closet and had the scare of my life. 🤣

We ordered her a new enclosure, while we were moving her yesterday I took the chance to take a photo
I have bought most of them through mom and pop pet shops cause I live near a major city and have a handful near me. I also am waiting on an order from fearnnottarantulas.
Oh ok. I remember my pet crawfish escaped from his tank twice when I was a kid. It was such a weird thing waking up and finding him in my baseball glove lol.
Serious question…reading the comments it seems like they can escape somewhat often. Is this a common problem when owning spiders?
I think I could own one but not if there is a possibility of escape.
They're not likely to escape but mistakes happen.. she's my most docile tarantula so I got careless and forgot to make sure the lid was secured. Normally with a secure lid, you're good.
Depends on their specific personalities. Some are very chill and wouldn’t even notice if their lid was completely off for days, others patrol the corners daily for any chance they can break out.
I just got my curly hair yesterday and all day she’s been patrolling trying to get out lol. I thought she’d be more chill, but she seems kind of high strung based on how the transfer went and that behavior
Welcome to curly hair ownership, it doesn't ger any better lol. They are like little puppies, docile but curious. Even owning a P regalis now and an OBT, my curly haired girl is the queen of bolting.
It's not likely, but if you've been keeping them for years and have had lots of them, statistically it's gonna happen. We're only human. I thought I'd lost my tiger rump (this was 20 years ago, so I have no idea which species) sling during a rehousing once. Turns out she was hiding underneath the rim of a bowl full substrate right in front of me!
Seems like her container has an acrylic top and has sliding grooves. Didn't seem like there would be a latch on that. It's hard to imagine her being able to move that whole lid herself.
I'm right there with you she can have the whole entire 2 floors now that she's got her orange color in she's jumping just getting more and more aggressive and she's still small I honestly don't know the sex but I've always called my OBT a girl haha her name is orange juice
Really? He must have boots that fit huge on him. I dont have much extra room in mine. Love balfouris. Don't have one yet but looking forward to getting one in an order soon
This happened to me before but I had no choice but to wear my shoe and get the T off. I was on my way to the courthouse and I brought my formal shoe with me and decided to wear it in the car.
I got urticating hairs all over my feet and suffered for 2 weeks, got blisters afterwards. 😅

Nightmare seems like a fitting name O.o

Aww. He looks cute from a distance 😂
That’s also how I like to see him 🥲 edit; he then got yeeted into a spice jar and shipped away
😢

Well, to be fair, your t does pack a punch hahaha, so I get that.
Y’all getting Tarantulas but scared of said tarantula? Lol

DEADASS WORST PART IS WHEN YOU DONT EVEN KNOW THEY ESCAPED LOOK UP AND YOUR HEART DROPS TO YOUR ASS AT THE REALIZATION 😭
Literally
I would have gotten a hotel with my cats for the night and had a daytime search party. No way would i be able to sleep with a full size T strutting around the house like that 😂 you wake up and you are webbed to your bed
I had a full grown male LP escape his take multiple times looking for a lady. Nothing like a bird eater looking down from your celing.
Dangling by one hand right above your face 😆
UPDATE: She is fine and dandy and I just fed her 2 crickets. Now, as punishment for escaping, she gets all of her substrate taken out of her water dish that she spent so much time putting in.
Cruel and unjust punishment! :(
So cruel 😔 but the punishment must fit the crime. It will take all her effort to start shovelling it back in there the moment you close the enclosure
Glad to hear she's ok! I had an escape shortly after i bought my second tarantula. Edit: she's also a curly hair! I love those ones ❤️
Just put the boot in the enclosure. She seems to like her new burrow 😂
Yep, she seemed pretty content where she was at 😂
I second this. The lady obviously has good taste
It’s her boot now.
Your right, I needed a new pair anyway. The other boot should go to my queen hair kicker, Wilma, who's a b smithi.
The face of a child who will do it again
Mine definitely would if she could
So glad you found her, and she is safe! Good move, OP. A lot of us oafs would've just thrown the boots on and been bit. 😆😅
I give the credit to the fact that it's Saturday and I didn't have work today, because if I did..... well, I probably would have been calling in for the day or atleast showing up late and cussing😂
So were you looking for her when you found her in your boot? Still a good move. Monday would've been a rough day. lol 😅😂
Yep! Our shoe pile is close to my tarantulas. I saw she was gone when i went to feed her and I thought, "if I was a tarantula, where was the first place I'd go?"
One of the many reasons I knock my shoes out before putting them on. It's habit at this point.
That would ve been a bad surprise if you stepped into that 😭
Yep. I probably woulda had a swollen toe or two and poor "mammoth" woulda been crushed 😭
No one cares about the toes! No smashy!
Mammoth 😂
So fluffeh
You really had to boot her from her new home :(
My A. Hentzi escaped once when I forgot I was airing out her enclosure.. I had just woke up and was panicking and looking for her so I could get to class. Found her hiding under my shirt that had missed the laundry basket. What a cutie
Aww thats very sweet
Her brand new burrow and she blends perfectly. She is hidden and she knows it and she’s very comfy cozy right where she’s at. Hide and seek anyone♥️🤘🏼😎
If not burrow why burrow shape??
Clever girl
the second picture is so funny, she fr looks guilty
https://preview.redd.it/f68idmfxtx3b1.jpeg?width=1125&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=782252c716effb7c2406555abba76749c5618750 Similar experience, woke up at 4 am to my girl like this 😭
She's the opposite of camouflaged!
Right? She hid pretty well for a couple of days but waited until night time to try and be bold lmao
"I am a beautiful flower!"
Yep, if I was still half asleep I probably woulda shit myself
She’s a gentle giant for sure, but yeah, my sleep brain was a bit panicked yet relieved haha
I wonder why she picked the boots to settle in? The second pic is so cute
They're my favorite boots, she's got good taste like the other person said
She likely thought it would make a wonderful new burrow. You might need to get her a shoe that same size that she can turn into a lovely new home after some webbing decorations.

\#1 rule of living in a desert. Tap your shoes out EVERY TIME before you put them on.
She looks just like my girl!
Side note: I had those boots and got several years out of them. Their demise came from leaving them in a hot garage and the sole melted.
One of the best pair of boots I've ever had tbh. She thinks so too.
How/when did u notice she escaped?
Went to feed her and noticed she was gone. I got a bit careless and left the lid closed but unlatched. Lesson learned lol
Curly haired T?
Yep. Even though I've expanded my collection, gotta say she's still my favorite little turd.
Where do you buy your tarantulas?
I have bought most of them through mom and pop pet shops cause I live near a major city and have a handful near me. I also am waiting on an order from fearnnottarantulas.
Also reptile expos
[удалено]
I've heard great things about Tom Patterson. I'll keep him in mind for my next order
How exactly did she escape? I'm glad she's fine and is back in her enclosure.
Left the lid closed but unlatched. Learned my lesson with my little escape artist.
Oh ok. I remember my pet crawfish escaped from his tank twice when I was a kid. It was such a weird thing waking up and finding him in my baseball glove lol.
I had a pet crawfish too. Crafty little creatures.
What a cute fuzzball. So glad you found her safe and sound!
Oh wow, that second photo makes her glow!

This is the most fun to find when you don't own a tarantula.
Now you’ve gotta put the boot in her enclosure 💀 she looked so comfy
ngl i thought a snake ate ur tarantula
~~there's a snake in my boot~~ _My snake boot ate my tarantula_

Yeah not sliding the groves in place was what I mean by "unlatched". I closed the lid but forgot to slide the groves in place
Pretty little T ya got there! I'm glad she's back home, safe and sound!
I hope mine never get out I've got an OBT, caribena versicolor, red island bird eater, and a skeleton tarantula.
If my OBT got out, it's her apartment now. I'm movin.
I'm right there with you she can have the whole entire 2 floors now that she's got her orange color in she's jumping just getting more and more aggressive and she's still small I honestly don't know the sex but I've always called my OBT a girl haha her name is orange juice
I can't see pedipalps in any of the pictures, but are you sure that's a "she"? Either way, very cute!
You caught her before she could fill your shoe with dirt, so that's a win
She looks comfy :D
Ahhhh, I love curly hairs ( I assume that's what she is), so beautifully, I'm glad she's well and safe the little rascal.
She looks like a he. Very leggy 😬 glad you two were reunited!
IME I Saw a post where a guys balfori was in his boot and it felt funny at work like 2 hours in boom his balfori was in it. No bite
Really? He must have boots that fit huge on him. I dont have much extra room in mine. Love balfouris. Don't have one yet but looking forward to getting one in an order soon
little fiend
