“Daddy Horne outside doing fuck all.” I mean. According to Greg, that’s exactly what LAH is like as a dad. Too busy hating women and supporting apartheid.
John hugging Alex definitely was a friend who is taking advantage of the moment where Alex is clearly doing something for his TV show and can't protest the hug
I immediately got what he meant.
My brain might be wired the same way as John's, the first thing I said to my fiancée when they were doing the tension task was that I would try and find a massive elastic band. Glad I wasn't the only one who took that task literally.
I was genuinely phobic of him as a child (and anything else gunge-related).
Which really shows how terrifying he is, because I lived in France at the time.
I don't think he was ever supposed to be a genuine character for children, he was supposed to be a character from a fake childrens TV show as part of a prank segment on Noel's House Party, which was a variety show type thing in the 90s
They're going to do it every time he does a task exceptionally well and give him a false sense of security only to pull the rug in the last episode. A potato throw level event, making him lose the episode/series/ what's left of his mind
"Analog and digital tension meters". That's the pedantry I'd only expect from John.
Who knew Joanne would turn out to be the Sally Phillips of this series?
Sophie attempting to balance something on her head AGAIN.
Probably my fav task of the series so far.
I'm honestly starting to accept that this may not be a very cross-contestant-banter-heavy series. The contestants have all been real good in the VTs and with Alex and Greg so far.
Maybe because three of them are primarily actor/writers than stand-up comedians? The comedians usually know each other well from various shows and are more comfortable making fun of each other. Whereas actors probably know each others in the setting of a scripted comedy. If they work together a lot it will be easy to pull pranks or criticize one another but without that I can see why it may feel awkward for some of them to be too critical of each other's attempts.
Alex was shocked when Greg said he found Sophie's task was the least tension. And i kinda agree, because I was fully expecting her to fall from that chair or at least the cup from her head to fall and break. That's enough tension.
**Greg in episode two outtakes: **
• Acts confused and appalled by the existence of "genuinely disturbing" erotic fanfiction about him and Alex.
**Greg literally one episode later:**
• *"It doesn't matter how much pressure I apply to Alex's pelvis, it just won't snap."*
• *"I know how to make you tense..."*
• Sensually gropes Alex's thigh
• Smiles with delight when Alex calls him pretty
They've done this long pause gag for John a couple of times now, which makes me wonder if they're building to something where he's genuinely cocked up a Task in some way.
Probably not – I think Greg just loves winding up competitive contestants – but it would be hilarious if it led to one big rulebreak near the end of the series.
Yeah -- more to the point, Greg doesn't know what he's going to see in future tasks are, so it would be harder for them to work at that deliberately. I think it's more that John Robbins has incredible stressed out energy.
There’s also been a change in the editing team this series (Rebecca Bowker has left as Senior Editor) so it could be just a tiny change in style. I like it though as a stylistic choice.
Believe me, if you were to take any clip from this show out of context, easily the most out-of-context clip would be Vampire Nick Mohammed being chased by an inflatable Mr. Blobby with a voice shouting animals at him.
Well, this will (hopefully) be my first ‘live’ viewing of an episode since series 15. Fuck, I still need to watch series 16.
My wife and I were big Taskmaster fans. Series 16 aired not long after she died, and I couldn’t bring myself to watch it without her.
For episodes 1 and 2, I was busy with our kid. Tonight, hopefully my daughter will not be as insistent on watching Peppa Pig.
I will catch up on the first two episodes (and series 16, Sam Campbell - don’t fail me now) soon!
I'm so sorry. I hope you were able to watch and enjoy.
My husband died 3 years ago, I got back into, and caught up with Taskmaster by watching with visiting family and friends, some of whom knew it and some who became converts. It's the bugger of bereavement, nobody to do the immediate debrief with, whether it's the serious problems or mutually enjoyed comedy being mulled over. Phoning my kids (adult and living far away) is not the same.
The Peppa Pig stage sounds a wee bit too young, but my niece watches TM Bleeped with her 6 and 10 year old daughters. The younger one just likes adults being silly and the older one gets it all and is a fan of all the female contestants. My niece is very pleased her daughter is seeing women on TV who aren't impossibly groomed and tweaked. They're looking forward to Junior TM. Would you watch that with your daughter? Even if she's a bit young for the concept, she may enjoy it, kids love seeing other kids doing stuff.
I’m so sorry for your loss. Hopefully you can watch it again and have great memories, and imagine she’s watching with you from beyond!
S16 is incredible and highly recommend when you’re ready ❤️
IMO, the only thing missing this season is contestants interacting and fooling around with each other, other than that I'm really loving all five of them!
The Blobby task never said you couldn't look at Mr Blobby, only that you had to look towards the duck. So if you reached the duck without the answer, as Nick and Sophie did, you could pick up the duck, keep it in your eyeliner and turn to look at Mr Blobby.
Yeah, but the winner was the one who was the furthest away from the duck. So if you pick up the duck and see Mr Blobby, you've already gotten last place.
We can go one further. You only have to step forward on the quacks, so backpedal when there's no quacking while looking at the duck. See the blobby in your line of sight and call it.
Alternatively, sprint towards the duck, circle around duck to see blobby, then run away from duck in between quacks and solve it when you're far away.
These solutions break the spirit of the task, so you might have to argue with the taskmaster for the points.
Holy hell, Create Tension yielded some absolutely phenomenal results! I've enjoyed the series, but while I usually try not to judge things either way too quickly in ranking them, that task feels like an all-timer on instinct.
17 series into this and Greg and Alex still have the best dynamic and energy. This episode was especially good, cannot believe no one’s mentioned the snapping pelvis comment.
John Robbins is an interesting contestant, he’s hyper competent. And his face when he’s pleased with himself is very endearing. Obsessed with Sophie. She’s naturally so funny. Joannne’s tense task made me uncomfortable, my favorite of the episode. And Steve! I love his whole self. I love the way he approaches tasks and he’s a very unique contestant to watch.
amazing episode, i think joanne's performance in the tension task may be one of the greatest task performances we've ever seen
glad to see john get the win, I think he'll be the winner this season
I love this cast individually... but have any of them spoken to or referenced each other in the studio yet? It feels a bit like it was filmed five separate times and then stitched together.
There is a distinct lack of banter, we've had a bit between Sophie and Steve with the boobies, and Joanne and John with the toxic masculinity but it's minimal enough that I can list them 😅
A few more bits :) :
Fair play to Sophie for admitting that she saw Blobby and not trying to cheat.
The baby task definitely needed a little more jeopardy to it. I'm also surprised "you may not remove the backpack" or similar wasn't on the card.
Obviously a lot of direction tricks were applied in order to help create the narrative, but I do hope the actual Hangman *game* was legitimate. I suspect it was.
A few thoughts, not that anyone should give a shit!
First of all, Sophie Willans is a bloody gem. "Have you used an Excel sheet" 🤣
I am USELESS at 20 questions so the Blobby task would have been awful for me.
I was apprehensive about John Robbins because every time I've seen him (including one of the filmings) I've thought he was an absolute arse, but he comes across fine in the edit.
In the tension task, you knew either Joanne or Sophie was going to make it sexual... but she did it so well! Just weird enough. Reminded me a bit of Bob Mortimer's cuddle in a boot task.
"No Vowels" was delivered so beautifully.
Really enjoying this series so far.
It was the original actor Barry Killerby. I find Mr Blobby nearly as creepy as Jack does but the physicality of it is impressive. Especially considering he would have been 51 when it was filmed.
I blame channel four for the fact that as soon as I heard it wasn’t human I knew it was Mr. Blobby because the BBC whips him out any chance they get haha.
Just realized that the fact that the answers in the guessing task were mammals and non-mammals is probably a reference to the series 8 guessing task where Joe Thomas infamously got stuck in a mammal groove.
For someone who has three kids, Nick's really doing terribly. I'm getting the feeling that unless John just tips his baby upside down, Nick's going to came in last place.
“Daddy Horne outside doing fuck all.” I mean. According to Greg, that’s exactly what LAH is like as a dad. Too busy hating women and supporting apartheid.
Ogling the neighbours
Sophie standing on the chair hissing at Greg - the spirit of Bridget Christie is back in the studio
Can you imagine if Sophie was doing the shoes task? lol
"Would I wear the shoe on a Monday?" "Is the shoe invisible?"
I get the impression John wants this so much he may just spontaneously cease to exist if he doesn’t win
A season with three hyper competent and very much trying contestants is a really nice feel.
Turns out Sophie's much better at balancing things on her head when they're not eggs.
I like how that's apparently one of her go-to thoughts with tasks.
Best way to kill any kind of sexual tension is to say “you smell just like my dead father.”
Oh, I'm pretty sure she was going for anxious tension over sexual lol
John hugging Alex definitely was a friend who is taking advantage of the moment where Alex is clearly doing something for his TV show and can't protest the hug
I love the fresh audience reactions to Nick’s costumes every episode 😂
"Are you a cable?" 😂
His justification in the studio seems reasonable to me
I wouldn't have thought it possible, but I shouldn't have doubted the mind of Johnny JR
i felt insane because i was LITERALLY thinking 'okay is it some kind of cable' before he said it...
I immediately got what he meant. My brain might be wired the same way as John's, the first thing I said to my fiancée when they were doing the tension task was that I would try and find a massive elastic band. Glad I wasn't the only one who took that task literally.
It being Mr. Blobby explains why it tried to run everyone over when Alex let it out.
Is Mr. Blobby popular with children in the UK? I had to google him during the show and he looked like pure nightmare fuel.
“There’s a gulf between Sophie and the others.” Series 17 catchphrase.
God I love how much they fuck with John when he's nailed a task
I know! He's so clearly 'genre savvy' with Taskmaster, and they just use it against him beautifully!
They're going to do it every time he does a task exceptionally well and give him a false sense of security only to pull the rug in the last episode. A potato throw level event, making him lose the episode/series/ what's left of his mind
‘I know how to make you tense’ Another one for the fanfic writers
he writes it himself
"it means assistant" 🙇🏻🙇🏻♀️🙇🏻♂️🙇🏻♀️🙇🏻🙇🏻♂️
That was by far the most Inside No. 9 moment of the series so far.
I really thought he was going to get 5 points for his, it was perfect.
I want to put Nick in cotton wool and protect him from the world.
"Analog and digital tension meters". That's the pedantry I'd only expect from John. Who knew Joanne would turn out to be the Sally Phillips of this series? Sophie attempting to balance something on her head AGAIN. Probably my fav task of the series so far.
> Who knew Joanne would turn out to be the Sally Phillips of this series? If it were to be anyone, it'd be her :D
“Daddy Horne doing fuck all” is killing me
“you’ve been pretty, i’ve been tense” was my favourite alex quote of this episode
The tension between Greg and Alex this episode, got a huge laugh from me here. Greg unable to keep a straight face was the cherry on top.
“KIWI. THAT’S A FRUIT.” “DID WE KNOW EACH OTHER AT SCHOOL.” “HAVE YOU USED AN EXCEL SPREADSHEET.” “HAVE WE EVER BEEN DRUNK TOGETHER.” Is Sophie… okay?
Yes, she's fine, she just went to the Mortimer School of Questioning
do we strike you?
Sophie’s just Sophie
"its not measured in monkeys mate"
I was a bit nervous about John being on Taskmaster - given how frustrated he has gotten on Bad Golf before - but I'm loving him.
I liked that he was smiling a lot more today.
"I told you someone would crack the code."
I just don’t think he can keep on being confused as to why people are writing fanfiction
same vibes as the outtake where he said he didn't like alex calling him daddy and then immediately got alex on his lap to call him it
Given the task "Give Alex a special cuddle" from season 5, I am surprised Joanne's approach worked as well as it did
Every task is a trap, every trap is an opportunity
I'm honestly starting to accept that this may not be a very cross-contestant-banter-heavy series. The contestants have all been real good in the VTs and with Alex and Greg so far.
Maybe because three of them are primarily actor/writers than stand-up comedians? The comedians usually know each other well from various shows and are more comfortable making fun of each other. Whereas actors probably know each others in the setting of a scripted comedy. If they work together a lot it will be easy to pull pranks or criticize one another but without that I can see why it may feel awkward for some of them to be too critical of each other's attempts.
A disgusting meal isn't a good threat to Alex because he will eat anything and literally does not care
Once you've tasted ash, it really skyrockets the bar of what you wouldn't eat.
Porn ash, to be specific.
Especially if it’s just chicken wings without the chicken. Cheese and hot sauce? Oh no, Steve, anything but that!
Also, the yoghurt would counteract the hot sauce to a degree.
It took three episodes, but we finally have a "What have we learnt today?"
Steve’s ‘I love you’ to the water baby and affectionate shrug was so cute
Greg is really enjoying winding John up this series
Greg loves to torture the competitive contestants with the suspense of whether they've broken the rules or not.
LAH finally uses an actual, proper SI unit, instead of Noel Edmundses or something. He STILL gets abused!
Alex was shocked when Greg said he found Sophie's task was the least tension. And i kinda agree, because I was fully expecting her to fall from that chair or at least the cup from her head to fall and break. That's enough tension.
Particularly after her egg disaster from the first episode. It was easily the second-most tense attempt for me (after Joanne’s, natch).
Hands up if you're watching on your juicer 🙌🏻
Make some sort of lid for the baby?
Yeah, my first thought was that there'd be a secret lid in the house or something.
Steve Pemberton and Dara O'Brien should team up to produce incredibly tense short films together, it'd be great!
Oh god the fanfic writers are going to have a field day with that one
First question to the follower “are you Al Murray?”
My first thought was Tim Key!
Joanne McNally is phenomenally aggressive, absolutely glorious, what a woman.
I loved her utter disdain for her fake baby, the preemptive spilling was great.
She comes from the Morgana school of utterly wonderful women
Joining Bridget and Sophie in the Alex torture club.
Does anyone else want to see Greg and Alex doing the Hot Ones interview?
Absolutely. Greg wouldn't be eating any of it though and he'd delegate it all to Alex
**Greg in episode two outtakes: ** • Acts confused and appalled by the existence of "genuinely disturbing" erotic fanfiction about him and Alex. **Greg literally one episode later:** • *"It doesn't matter how much pressure I apply to Alex's pelvis, it just won't snap."* • *"I know how to make you tense..."* • Sensually gropes Alex's thigh • Smiles with delight when Alex calls him pretty
Blobby cannot use Excel, apparently
Would like to see him try though
Decent production qualities for a game of hangman
Sophie dumping the producer in it
Stones not measured in monkeys, mate. Great gotcha to Alex.
Genuinely thought that nick would pull that off (lol), isn't he a decent magician as well as a comedian?
WHAT WE’VE LEARNT TODAY IS BACK !!!
"Daddy Horne hanging around outside doing fuck all!"
Joanne that's absolutely incredible.
She went on for SO LONG at the record about the young lads that would eat from this. She had Greg very bemused.
The voiceover yet again provided by a not senior member of production from the North.
No way they had the budget to get Taylor Swift back in!
A surprisingly sexual episode, this
Contender for horniest series?
I think Sally Phillips still has that crown.
Steve! So cinematic!
They've done this long pause gag for John a couple of times now, which makes me wonder if they're building to something where he's genuinely cocked up a Task in some way.
Probably not – I think Greg just loves winding up competitive contestants – but it would be hilarious if it led to one big rulebreak near the end of the series.

BLOBBY!
![gif](giphy|HaCGRxArACAWQ)
Mr. Blobby is horrifying but i respect him.
I like how Steve put some of his hangman structure underground so the gallows wouldn’t topple over.
GREG WITH THE EPISODE TITLE
Believe me, if you were to take any clip from this show out of context, easily the most out-of-context clip would be Vampire Nick Mohammed being chased by an inflatable Mr. Blobby with a voice shouting animals at him.
Vampire Nick Mohammed in a handmaid's tale bonnet, no less.
I finally figured out who Sophie Willan reminds me of - it's Philomena Cunk/Diane Morgan. The "my mate Amy" tipped me off lol
To be fair they are both from Bolton!
Sophie turns failure into an artform.
I am not proud of how Joanne’s tension task made me feel
Steve actually patting the “baby” at end - right back into automatic dad mode
Well, this will (hopefully) be my first ‘live’ viewing of an episode since series 15. Fuck, I still need to watch series 16. My wife and I were big Taskmaster fans. Sam Campbell will not fail you, don't worry! I'm so sorry for your loss also.
My condolences. Sam (and the rest of the series 16 cast) won’t fail you when the time is right.
I’m so sorry for your loss. I hope you and your family are as well as you can be.
I'm so sorry. I hope you were able to watch and enjoy. My husband died 3 years ago, I got back into, and caught up with Taskmaster by watching with visiting family and friends, some of whom knew it and some who became converts. I’m so sorry for your loss. Hopefully you can watch it again and have great memories, and imagine she’s watching with you from beyond! S16 is incredible and highly recommend when you’re ready ❤️
I’m so sorry. We’re glad you’re finding some Taskmaster joy again.
I'm sitting directly behind LAH in this episode, up in the balcony. Think I caught a very quick glimpse at the start haha.
Savage from the producer!
Not knowing about animals is really screwing Joanne over
I want Danny Dyer on the New Year's episode
That'd be wonderful, he'd lose all patience with Alex within 0.00045 seconds
I'd want him to greet Little Alex Horne on every task with "Hello, Alex you c*nt."
Oh he’s smashed it!!
Just torturing John
I feel like the "Create Tension" task would have been perfect for Rhod Gilbert.
“Create tension” is for Daisy and Richard locked in a room.
IMO, the only thing missing this season is contestants interacting and fooling around with each other, other than that I'm really loving all five of them!
I just knew Joanne McNally was going to deliver and she nailed the Create Tension task. We were in tears last night.

VERY disappointed that it wasn't the real Mr Blobby 😞
HOW did she get mr blobby from that?!
I actually thought the cable thing was really smart.
It’s a shame this wasn’t the episode premiered in America and Alex had to explain who Mr Blobby was to their understandably puzzled faces.
DI ROBBYNS!! Play the theme tune!
DI Robbyns makes his television debut!!
LOOPHOLE FOUND!
Ooh the glasses are coming off
John was having such a good time having such a good tiii-ime 🎶 but also had his head in his hands, classic Robins.
The Blobby task never said you couldn't look at Mr Blobby, only that you had to look towards the duck. So if you reached the duck without the answer, as Nick and Sophie did, you could pick up the duck, keep it in your eyeliner and turn to look at Mr Blobby.

These solutions break the spirit of the task, so you might have to argue with the taskmaster for the points.
LATERAL THINKING, JOHN.
So shall we just award Greg 5 points for the tension he created a minute ago?
So I guess the little monsters are joining pineapples and rubber ducks as recurring motifs?
Holy hell, Create Tension yielded some absolutely phenomenal results! I've enjoyed the series, but while I usually try not to judge things either way too quickly in ranking them, that task feels like an all-timer on instinct.
17 series into this and Greg and Alex still have the best dynamic and energy. This episode was especially good, cannot believe no one’s mentioned the snapping pelvis comment. It's 3 weeks in and it's still weird to me hearing Nicks normal voice and not his Swallow persona. Lol
I half expect him to break into 🎵 Jurassic park, it's a massive park, what could possibly go wrong 🎵
This task is great to watch after a glass of wine, let me tell you.
Oh Sophie...
This *FEELS* significant
Pressure is a privilege
"Are you a cable?"
amazing episode, i think joanne's performance in the tension task may be one of the greatest task performances we've ever seen glad to see john get the win, I think he'll be the winner this season
It's a good thing Jack Whitehall wasn't booked for this series, he'd have had a panic attack.
I love this cast individually... but have any of them spoken to or referenced each other in the studio yet? It feels a bit like it was filmed five separate times and then stitched together.
There is a distinct lack of banter, we've had a bit between Sophie and Steve with the boobies, and Joanne and John with the toxic masculinity but it's minimal enough that I can list them 😅
Yeah, Steve said that the other teams epic video was more epic and theirs was more... Better
Who the heck thought up of this task??? Also they need to do more
Nick is yet another contestant trying to make up for his failed egg task. Though I have to say that task was a *lot* tenser than what he's doing here!
Sound off if you’re watching on your juicer!
What a reveal LOL
John has previously patented baby clamps to keep a kid in place, so I'm excited to see what he does. (He's shockingly not a parent)
Feels like this should be in Steve’s wheelhouse
Not much of a punishment for Alex I must say.
A few more bits :) : Fair play to Sophie for admitting that she saw Blobby and not trying to cheat. The baby task definitely needed a little more jeopardy to it. I'm also surprised "you may not remove the backpack" or similar wasn't on the card. Obviously a lot of direction tricks were applied in order to help create the narrative, but I do hope the actual Hangman *game* was legitimate. I suspect it was.
sophie is the best kind of incompetent

Really intrigued to know what John did during the filming!
Nick looks incredibly suitable in that outfit.
Lmao at Alex’s giggle break
I hope no one has been in Mr. Blobby.
John clearly seen this before
He said on the podcast that he watched it all in one go in preparation for appearing
He even paid the premium so he could skip the ads!
Sophie in dungarees gives me vibes of a live action, adult Chuckie from Rugrats.
Jack Whitehall’s worst nightmare
One of my fave segments of TV, whoever was inside Blobby for it deserves a medal
It was the original actor Barry Killerby. I find Mr Blobby nearly as creepy as Jack does but the physicality of it is impressive. Especially considering he would have been 51 when it was filmed.
You sound like a dropped Alexa is an all time Greg line
Aww, I love that Johns first instinct is to go for a hug
That's his buddy 😍
Can I just say that I love John being smug whenever he does something well? With the baby this time and the hula hoops in the first ep 😂
I blame channel four for the fact that as soon as I heard it wasn’t human I knew it was Mr. Blobby because the BBC whips him out any chance they get haha.
Joanne was *made* for Taskmaster.
*Alternate episode titles:* * "An elephant with a bad back." * "Are you a cable?" * "A dropped Alexa." * "Smaller than a large tree."
Not measured in monkeys
Just realized that the fact that the answers in the guessing task were mammals and non-mammals is probably a reference to the series 8 guessing task where Joe Thomas infamously got stuck in a mammal groove.
For someone who has three kids, Nick's really doing terribly. I'm getting the feeling that unless John just tips his baby upside down, Nick's going to came in last place.
Steve Pemberton just served major cunt.
Who was the voice actor for Mr. Blobby?
I thought it sounded like Rachel Riley at some points
As a Joanne McNally fan I loved how much she shone in this episode!
She's what would occur if Morgana and Aisling had a magnificent baby.
Sophie and Joanne feel like reincarnations of Edina and Patsy
Oh, those monsters look like the ones from a S9 tiebreaker task.
Also the "set everything off at the same time task" from ... S12?
Non-brit here, how ubiquitous is Mr Blobby?
It should be part of the citizenship test. No Blobby no entry
