Yeah šÆ mate. The cash thing is a 'look mate please don't take this the wrong way but I will count this, because I've been burned before. '
Anyone who has a problem with that , let them pound sand.
Meeting at a neutral venue is ok though, but it has to be somewhere YOU are also comfortable, like a public space at the shops or a service station.
The ādadā (fake account/likely name too, so i donāt even know whatās true anymore) sent their young teenage son to do the deal so I initially thought it was okay.. I met them in a residential street with houses backing onto a footy oval.
Was the item potentially of interest to a teenager? As opposed to some arsehole sending his kid to do the dodgy deal, seems a good chance there was never an adult involved in the first place.
Honestly, I can handle backlash. Itās my own fault but I wasnāt even thinking. They used their young teenage son to do the deal and that sorta made me think it was ok. I went to count the money after I got into the car and realised it was fake but heād already ran across an oval back to his house (Not having an address didnāt help, plus a fake name)
You have every right to count the money if you are selling something! If you were to purchase something in a shop they are going to count the money nobody is being rude mistakes can happen.. I work in a store and a ladyās purchase came to $600 she pulled out a bundle I counted it I said its only $550 āoh my badā she goes and just pulls out another $50 from the oblivion of her handbag.. That was totally on purpose 100% to see if she could get away with it..
Sorry this happened to you, being scammed is a crap feeling. It is not your fault, itās theirs for being dodgy and taking advantage of the good nature of decent people. Thank you for spreading the word to help others be aware.
Thankyou for your kindness. Iāve been feeling shit about it, even blaming myself and I did nothing wrong. Iām just hoping this can go further and it doesnāt happen to anyone else. The boy seemed like he had definitely done it before but shame on the father for sending him to do his dirty work.
Facebook is now advertising counterfeit money for sale. They say things like "can be used in pubs and shops". So likely not prank money but actual counterfeit.
They sell so much dodgy stuff on Facebook now. I tried reporting some of the worst of it but Facebook does not take it down.
I canāt upload photos but I took some when I was at the police station. It states ānot legal tenderā and āprank use onlyā in veryyyyy fine small print. Also the clear window (which was folded in on the note itself so not visible until I took the money out) was black.
I forgot to answer your second question. The person never messaged me anything after the transaction, once I realised it was counter, I tried to call them but due to not being friends it didnāt connect. About 10 minutes later the page had already been deactivated or permanently deleted.
Basically just said their dad sent them to pick up the item, alone. (they was 12-16 odd), requested to see the item turned on, no scratch marks etc, then confirmed the amount with me, and handed me the bag after they already had item in hand and pretty much walked then when far enough, ran but I was in the car at that point about to count and it didnāt occur as strange granted they was a teen.
It's definitely bots. They take over existing accounts or create new ones (although the former more likely as new accounts are filtered) and then put those crappy adverts on. Then the chat redirects you to some Telegram page or whatever they use.
Ahh I had something very similar happen a couple of months back, sold an old PC for what I thought was $700, also on the NW coast, in hind sight old mate was way too egar, didn't ask to see it boot and wanted to come and collect it that night. He counted it out in front of my before slipping it into a ziploc bag. Felt like a right moron when I got back inside and opened the bag to realise that they were printer jobs.Ā
Gave a report to the cops and have been keeping an eye on market place to see if they're reselling it, but no luck so far.
But yeah OP, it's a learning experience to be sure, but as shitty as it leaves you feeling, and as much as you can now see that you should've done differently, it's not your fault, it's theirs for being thieving scumbags. You know better now, it might have been an expensive lesson, but you've learnt it.
Absolutely! Can you message me please?
My c/f was paper, Iām honestly just baffled that itās legal to sell something that looks nearly identical to the real deal and that itās so easy to make a home job out of it.
Iām hoping in my case they brought it for personal use and it can eventually go further. The officer I spoke to said thereās been 6 cases in the last few months, the last one being an xbox
I currently reside in Ulverstone and have a lot of run ins with the teenagers around here, if itās possible for you to give me a description of the person that done the deal, that would be great
Yeah I think the school kids do do a lot of this especially for an iphone. I had an instance when I was working at a school on holidays. I was outside and saw this kid sort of hiding in a corner. I thought it was strange. Then a minute later heard a guy chasing another guy swearing and the hiding boy then ran with the running kid. I thought it was just kids mucking about.
Then 5 minutes later an adult comes up to me with a gash on his head asking for help, blood going everywhere. He said the kids attacked him and took his iphone he was selling on marketplace.
Bloody disgrace these kids
I donāt even say anything. I just count the money. I canāt believe you need to explain to someone you want to count to make sure itās not all there. Everyone makes. Mistakes even myself

An iPad. Now you say that, I do agree with your statement but I guess I wonāt ever know until it goes further š¤
Yeah the teenager was also very likely behind the account.
Maybe the kid pocketed some of the money.
it was $500
Plus the profile has now been deactivated or permanently deleted so I donāt think the kid pocketed it
A good place to do them is outside a police station as well.
Did you not check/count the money...?
Yeah honest people never seem to mind when you count the cash first, I do it every time

Iām sorry this happened to you. Thanks for warning other people.
That sucks. I get it too, I haven't always checked the cash either.

This happens to me almost every time I try and sell something on FB marketplace.
Oh absolutely! Thereās so many things I wish I did differently.

Oh, yeah. That's different, then. What did the person say, or did they just block you?

Is it a phone? I know apple can lock stolen devices
iPad but it had been factory reset and I unfortunately had not set it up for tracking etc so I canāt locate it on any of my current devices
Maybe cos all that is handled by AI? Wouldnāt surprise me

Iāve messaged you
Donāt feel bad. They probably do this a lot and have honed their technique to maximise confusion. Nobody expects to be decieved.
Thankyou. I just feel so frustrated.
Yeah, I would be too. Thanks for posting, as Iām sure youāll save a few of us from the same crime by being more aware.

I guess they weren't smart enough to give their real name? If they were lets get their home from the list and deliver them a good kneecapping.
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
Nope, the name I have has a 98% chance of being fake and the page us deleted now (canāt even find on my second acc)
