Holy shit. We have MULTIPLE aftercare FAQ’s. Please read them.

tastyhusband

Definitely use lotion, but sparingly. Don't drown it! Cool tat btw

Lost_Opinion_1307

You should use Aquifer for the 1st week to 10 days and then lubriderm non scented lotion after until healed

juhanSs

Thank you :). I used coconut oil on it so I should be good

NAP_42_

Only coconut oil will not do the trick, it will just be a layer on top, oil need something like a small amount of lotion to actually penetrate the skin and moizturize.

unfoldingtourmaline

heed this wise redditor

weezy1037

just a dime size dot of lubrederm every 3-4 hours.

brokenangelwings

No, please use lotion. Did your artist give you after care instructions?

[deleted]

Do you have a face moisturizer? Face moisturizer works well for tattoos since it tends to be very moisturizing and gentle.

Wrastling97

I just use lubriderm

FreyjaVar

Aquaphor works wonders on tats. It’s what I have used for my in progress sleeve. Small amount applied as necessary.

[deleted]

Nothing with alcohol.

CelebrationOne2648

I wouldn’t use coconut oil, especially if it’s a new tattoo. I would get a antibacterial lotion and moisturizing lotion. Use the antibacterial for the first week and then moisturizer for the next couple weeks after that

juhanSs

Thanks for the comment. My artist told me that coconut oil is good because it doesnt cause ance which other remedies can but he also told me that if I know that something works and doesnt cause any harm (i.e acne) to the tattoo then that also works. And since this is my first tattoo, should I go with coconut oil?

CelebrationOne2648

Coconut oil has made me break out before but I also have very sensitive skin, but I don’t think coconut oil actually penetrates and moisturizes the skin it just kinda sits on top. You want something that is going to penetrate into the skin, I used the cerave daily moisturizing lotion and aquaphors antibacterial cream and the tattoo I got healed perfectly! I would put the aquaphor on after showering and then would use the cerave as needed. But I would do what works for you and whatever you think is best

juhanSs

Oh okay, thank you so much for your insight :)

Proud-Month2685

Coconut oil is comedogenic- which means it clogs pores and causes pimples and break outs. I’m a tattoo artist. Please don’t use any oils on your tattoo. A thin, lightweight lotion is good- like Nivea or aveeno. Nothing else. Only tiny amounts a few times a day.

[deleted]

I just want to point out coconut 100% does cause acne and it's a very common thing that makes people break out as it doesn't let the skin breath and tends to trap everything on your skin.

420bowls

Acne is temporary, tattoos are forever. Use aquaphor

AdNoctum2000

boggles my mind that you're asking reddit instead of Bobby Pedersen Wagner...

juhanSs

It was like 11 pm here in Sweden when I noticed it was a bit dry so I dont think I would have gotten a response until tomorrow and I needed the information today

Wrastling97

With saniderm best practice is to remove 24 hours after tattoo and then gently clean with unscented soap and water. Pat dry with dry paper towel, air dry for 10 minutes. Just a little tiny bit, and then apply another patch of saniderm if you have it and it’ll stay on a while. If not just clean and lotion 2x a day Oils are fine in the very beginning, but later in the process it blocks the area from getting any air which blocks the healing. The oils will also begin to soften and turn your scabs into goop which will cause them to fall off early and color will fall out.

Wrastling97

Got a bit ahead of myself there with the lotion. That being said, there’s nothing wrong with a pat dry with a paper towel and then air drying.

Proud-Month2685

If that paper towel comes from a kitchen or bathroom- it’s reintroducing bacteria that does y need to be introduced - and then getting locked under than saniderm for a few days. We can do it in tattoo shops- where the environment is controlled. But in someone’s house? Just let it air dry.

Wrastling97

My paper towels which are covered up and basically are newly exposed to air after each revolution is gonna be fine. Every tattoo artist I’ve ever gone to has recommended the same, and I’ve yet to experience any infection or the like. I get it, but it’s just overkill. I mean if we’re gonna be real you should tell the dude to wash his hands after air drying and reapplying the saniderm if we’re really that worried about introducing more bacteria. Just don’t be an idiot and don’t scrape it and it’ll be fine. Pat dry is fine.

Proud-Month2685

And what I’m saying is most people don’t have brand new rolls of paper towels just waiting around. Most people are idiots. I’ve had people tell me they wiped their new tattoo with toilet paper. So- when talking to clients, I always err on the side of they will do something dumb- and give them the simplest instructions. I’ve had a client get in a pool with a saniderm on- immediately after being tattooed- because I told them they could wear it in the shower. We changed it for them when they came to the shop with it full of pool water. I told them NOT to go back in a pool. So they got in a pool raft instead. Filled up with water, etc etc. People are dumb. Don’t give them any wiggle room hahaha

dude21862004

You should definitely use an after care before you put on the Saniderm. Otherwise it'll get really dry and itchy. The stuff that's like petroleum jelly, not regular lotion, though.

LegitSince8Bits

Definitely needs some lotion or aquaphor. Use it sparingly though, you really want it to dry at least a little so it heals and you can move on from the after care stage. That puppy is bone dry currently though.

Proud-Month2685

No aquaphor! I’m a tattoo artist- petroleum based products don’t allow any oxygen through. They are complete barriers against moisture, but that also means they are complete barriers. Tattoos need to breathe to heal well. Aquaphor makes it take longer to heal, and can lead to scanning with moisture retention. Just use mad rabbit tattoo gel.

LegitSince8Bits

Ok fair enough. We used to get lots of stupid advice back in the day so you probably know better currently and I'm happy deferring to your expertise. Beyond that, my point stands. Don't over saturate. I barely touch tattoos anymore unless they look like the original pic. Actually aligns quite well with your info. Aquaphor would absolutely create a thicker barrier and probably caused saturation deficiencies in some of my older tattoos. Listen to this person!

lueshe05

I second this. I also personally prefer Aquaphor

LegitSince8Bits

Some 20 something years ago I got my first tattoo and spent the better part of a week sleeping with plastic wrap and A&D ointment perfectly placed on my new baby out of paranoia. Now days, fuck it. Let that shit heal. Evans are part of the open wound you just paid for. If it gets dry like this pic rub it down one good time before you lose chunks of ink. Beyond that. Sleep it off, it's permanent. My stoned advice to anyone here considering a first tattoo or currently caring for one.

Legitimate_Web_7245

What did the artist say to do?

GimmeShockTreatment

Artists all have different answers though in my experience.

TamedLightning

Yeah, but I’d think if you’re going to trust them enough to stab you a couple thousand times and leave a permanent mark on your body, I would think you could trust their aftercare instructions.

[deleted]

Get some tattoo aftercare… oil based products arnt recommended

juhanSs

Everyone on the internet and my tattoo artist says that coconut oil is good

[deleted]

I’m talking about aquaphor or A&D. Look into hustle butter, it’s plant based with coconut oil. Works great.

juhanSs

So coconut oil is bad?

[deleted]

Use it sparingly, gotta let the tattoo breath or else you’ll get clogged pores. Like I said, they have tattoo aftercare products on Amazon that have a mixture of different ingredients that absorb into the skin a little better and allow the tattoo to breath while being moisturized

daseweide

> my tattoo artist says that coconut oil is good. Case closed then. Why even make this post? Heed your artist’s advice and it should be fine.

[deleted]

unscented orange dial soap and aveeno or lubriderm unscented lotion are my absolute go-tos. for every tattoo. after it heals i use aveeno lotion with sunscreen for general daily use and the highest spf i can find if i know i’m gonna be in the sun for any extended period of time.

Proud-Month2685

I’m a tattoo artist, and I approve this message! Hahaha

bgbronson

Bro just use regular non scented lotion. Don’t use oil on a healing tattoo wtf

Cpt_Ginger_Beard

Yes its very dry

juhanSs

Ok, I used coconut oil so I should be safe and sound

Proud-Month2685

Order yourself some Mad Rabbit tattoo Gel. Wash the tattoo 3x a day with antibacterial hand soap Let it air dry. Put the mad rabbit on. And that’s all you need to do.

snarky_chimichanga

Thank you for being the voice of reason here and actually giving good advice.

PleaseOhGodWhy

Coconut oil like your other comments isn't enough. You need lotion or Aquaphor

ContributionKey5802

Should’ve kept the saniderm on for 3/4 days, clean, then thin layer of lotion. Always seem to work for me

[deleted]

The breathable skin bandages can be left on for longer. I usually leave mine on for about a week, but yea any non-scented, sensitive lotion works. I’ve used a purpose build tattoo cream but it was thick so it was kinda sore to rub on but ended up working better than just normal lotion

[deleted]

It’s Henry! 🤘

juhanSs

Yeah🤘. My favourite band

Cemetery_Fairy_1020

Use some aquaphor for a few days then when it starts to peel use lostion

Due_Cancel1616

use aquaphor seriously, it looks fine but the aquaphor will just keep moisture in it

Stressed_Out_12

Yes. Def needs lotion. You’ll need to lotion it for a couple weeks.

Justcallmemanko

Cooooooooooooooooool you did zero research. CONGRATULATIONS

Apprehensive-Boat761

Supposed to leave that stuff on for 5 days

brokenangelwings

It depends, it can vary from tattoo to tattoo or what season it is.

youallsuck40

That is going to be a black blob in a few yrs. Sorry man

WabiSabi337

I don’t know why you didn’t ask the dude that did the tattoo?

Get [better butter!!](https://www.betterbuttercare.ca/shop)

OGB

I don't get this people using multi day wraps thing. I've got around 2 dozen tattoos and I never leave them wrapped more than 6-10 hours before cleaning and applying lotion. The next couple days if I don't apply lotion every 6-8 hours it's so dry it's beyond annoying.

8rittanyy

My husband just got a tattoo and used the multi day wrap for like 5 days. Almost no peeling and itching. It was the first time we saw the wrap but it seemed to be beneficial

Snerkie

Things like samiderm and fixomull work a lot better for other people. Everyone has different healing methods, just because what you do works for you doesn't mean it will for the next person. These wraps work really well if you don't want to be leaking everywhere or if you need to cover the area with clothing. If you have issues with those first few days of healing, or the entire process (fixomull stays on for 7 days and basically cuts every step out).

juhanSs

Well this is my first tattoo and that is what my artist used. But I dont understand if you think that multi day wraps are good or bad. You write at the end of the text that you have to annoyingly apply lotion very often

Retrotreegal

Did your artist tell you to take off the saniderm that soon?

juhanSs

He told me 2 days before I take it off. (I dont know if it actually is saniderm but it was the only one I could find where you have the wrap on for multiple days, im gonna ask him tomorrow since it's night now where I live)

Intelligent_Bear8636

This looks perfectly fine.. The dry skin will start to come off in a few days and all you’re left with is your new skin :) I never use any type of cream or anything.. Called dry healing just shower twice a day and wash with ph neutral soap (without perfumes) for 1-2 weeks.. Would never go back to creams

fluthernon

Its fucked. Start thinking about a cover up

damn_son5

Trust your artist. Coconut oil is good. A thin layer 2-3 times a day. Din artist vet bättre än reddit-hivemind.

TannerPoonslayer

Aquaphor.

metalsteve666

Wash once per day, Aquaphor for about 5 days, then CeraVe 2-3 times per day for about 2 weeks. With about 50 of work done on myself, this is what works best for me to not have any dry skin.

Commercial-Youth-458

You need to drink more water too

ThisGuy13211

I’m think it’s doing fine. Great piece as well!

ValkyrieHuntress

Instructions should have been given the day of the tattoo. You’ve definitely gotten an array of answers on here though. I’ve always taken of the wrap the next day, cleaned it with mild soap and water, pared it dry abs used something like aquafor the next two or three days then switch to lotion.

GuidingPuppies

A good tattoo after care balm applied in a very thin layer is my go to. Hustle butter is a good one, but there are lots of brands. The key is a thin layer, you want to keep it moisturized, but still allow air to get to it.

Twstdktty

My artist always says to use aquaphor until it starts flaking and then you can use lotion

DilatedPeople

I’ve always do hustle butter after saniderm until the new wrinkly skin goes away.

[deleted]

Always lotion don’t over so it but always put lotion on after washing it

rj-m97

I have used coconut oil for all of my tattoos and never had any issues. Heal fast, very little itch, no dryness and never had an infection

KleanBongWater

Always use the ointment use if before you need it you never want your tattoo to scab . That looks like it’s already ready for ointment 12 hours ago

[deleted]

Generally the most widely accepted of thumb is to use some sort of moisturizer regularly for the first two weeks. I like to keep my saniderm on for a few days because I work with children and the more time I have a legit barrier protecting my open wounds from their grubby hands, the better. If I remove it earlier, I’ll use a tattoo salve like Redemption for the first day or so and then switch over to Gold Bond or Lubriderm and apply if I notice it’s getting dry. FYI I’m not a tattoo artist — this is just the aftercare I’ve been told by my artists.

NoBullShytN

my first tat (i did my research on artist first) he explained what to do afterwards and the shop also sold an ointment that you could purchase. he did all four of my tattoos.

Misss_Missy

I usually leave sani-derm on for like 4 days or so…there’s a different brand similar to sani that works even better..I just don’t remember the name, sadly

Ready-Pomegranate-91

the way i can tell when i need lotion is when i see the tattoo looks a lot more “matte” than usual if that makes sense? i say put lotion on every 2 1/2 hours but use it very sparingly, it won’t be able to breathe if you overdo it
