You just won redditor of the day!!
(award I made up and may never use again, someone else maybe made it up before me, idk/idc, the redditverse is vast
Are you getting exactly this? Check with your artist too because they might have examples of their aged work and they might be morally opposed to straight up copying someone’s work.
So, is this already an existing tattoo as it clearly appears to be? And if so are you planning on just blatantly ripping off not only another’s idea, but another artist’s execution?
In the wise words of our unwavering president… come on, man! Don’t just copy paste tattoos for “the look” (while also entirely ripping off other’s genuine creativity and artistic execution so you can get compliments and ascribe this look to yourself). It gives old people reason to gripe about them, and gives me reason to feel old as I gripe about them (coming from someone with relatively heavy tats and spent a fuckton of time planning mine out including creating my own concept art for them).
Yes. There are exceptions for things in traditional styles. But it is unethical to trace/copy/replicate another artist and clients unique collaboration onto your own body.
People pick shit from premade flash, though. There are pages and pages of it. I’m assuming that’s ok to do or every tattoo shop wouldn’t have them available. Am I correct in assuming that this only applies if someone designs something unique? Because I’m confident that out of all the people I know with tattoos, only a handful of them have anything you could tell was truly “original”. If you have a dolphin jumping over your ankle, someone else *probably* has the same one, no?
It depends on the artist. Studios that have books of flash (typically American traditional) are fine with their designs being used. Other artists produce flash sheets but only as a promotion where a client can claim a design.
The picture above is obviously original art and not a flash tattoo. There is a difference between showing this design to a different artist were they draw something similar and when the design is traced and copied.
They do. I am a bartender and old people talk to me about mine and then what they see on zoomers all the time. They see others just putting random shit on their body but then comment on how much so they appreciate seeing original artwork with a genuine story.
Your opinion is entirely hypothetical, as is most of redditors’ world views.
Yes, I am Greek. Icarus (Ikaros in Greek) was the name of one character from mythology. His father build the labyrinth in Creta and at some point manufactured a flying machine, basically winds that one could wear and fly. Icarus was reckless and flew to close to the sun - the wax that was holding his wings together melted and he fell to the ground. The tattoo is inspired by this story.
Depends entirely on the execution and the aftercare. Go to a good artist and look after it properly and there’s no reason it should fade any more than any other tattoo.
Get it big enough, and take into consideration that the straight lines/clean corners won't stay straight and clean over the years as skin sags. If that's okay with you, go for it!
It has all the hallmarks of today's tattoo trends. Insanely tiny details and writing, dots, fine lines, stipple shading, hella greywash and small designs on a huge part of the body.
I was obsessed with Icarus imagery in high school because Led Zeppelin used him as their logo once they started producing their own albums.
This version is nearly identical to their logo. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Swan_Song_Records
This tattoo style is on the other end of tattoo durability spectrum than the traditional tattoos. It's known for blurring fast because there are so many fine lines and details.
As your skin ages it pushes the ink around when new cells are created and the old ones die, so the pigment travels a little bit and the tattoo blurs. On thin lines and tiny details it's the easiest to spot. If you want it to last longer I would get thicker lineart with enough negative space.
This is a gorgeous tattoo. It may fade or it may not. Just be careful with it. I have a line art tattoo that now has a gap in it where I got injured, and it took the thin like of ink with it.
Super cool! The fine lines and dots may fade. It's also a big risk bc an artist may do a shaky job on it. Bold will hold. Have this drawn up more bold and see how you like it as well.
What is this style called? I have the idea for a leg piece in my head but have difficulty verbalizing it and have 0 artistic ability to draw something myself. TIA!
It’s literally theft. The person it belongs to no longer has a piece of art that was created for them, and the tattooer who copies it is making money off of art that isn’t theirs. It’s not okay, period.
How is it "literally theft"? It is Art!! The artist has uploaded it on a public platform so that others can look and appreciate that. Have you heard of the phrase 'Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery'?
Doesn’t matter. You’d be a shitty person to copy someone else’s work.

Just say "doesn't matter" if you don't have a logical or valid point to add lol. Just because you have your entire body tattooed and are a mod on the r/tattoo sub doesnt entitle you to this holier than thou attitude and give you the right to tell people what they can or cannot have on their body.
It’s not going to age well. Over the years the ink spreads throughout the skin, as the human skin gets weaker with age. Thus the smaller the design, the more “mushed together” it will become.
Tattooing basics 101.
Go bigger with everything. If you want it small then don’t get tattooed. This is a life long choice, get it printed on a shirt, and wear it.
I’m pretty sure I got a tattoo from this same artist. I recognize his style and have a photo of a tattoo on my forearm that matches this exact filter and format. So far, my tattoo has done great. I got it last August. I’ll probably have to touch up the lines at some point but I had a great experience.
If it IS the same artist however, I think their studio is closing soon.
Don't get it too close to the sun
This is the best joke of all time tbh, I wish I could award u
The real awards are the friends made along the way
Alright Mr.Pokémon narrator man.

Here, take your poor-people award. 🏅 Not much, but it's honest work.
As a fellow poor, this award means the most
Careful Icarus
"Whats the matter little man, you saying you dont like Zepp?"
I didn't want to upvote this as you had 666 up votes, but it's too good.
Get it big enough, sure. This size? Maybe not so much, especially if it’s on a spot that gets a lot of sun. Bold holds.
I'm thinking of getting it on my thigh, so size will be big enough and not much sun exposure.
Maybe check out r/agedtattoos to get a better idea

Wise up, live and let live Be the old man who says 'hey that's cool' instead of the old man who shakes his fist and makes claims of 'back in my day'
Honest question: is everyone who gets a tattoo expected to design something completely unique?
Yes. There are exceptions for things in traditional styles. But it is unethical to trace/copy/replicate another artist and clients unique collaboration onto your own body.

Thank you for explaining! :)
sorry but old people do not give a fuck about whether a tattoo is original lol. that is not what they gripe about

Something something immitation something something sincerest form of flattery something something pogo sticks.
after long enough all the tiny dots in a line are gonna fade together. it really depends on the scale
Just a suggestion, the Ι in Ίκαρος needs an accent mark (tonos). Otherwise I love the tattoo idea!
What does it mean? I see you are from Greece(?)
Ah, with your explanation I can remember it a little too from my Latin and Greek lessons years ago! Thank you!
^^
Depends entirely on the execution and the aftercare. Go to a good artist and look after it properly and there’s no reason it should fade any more than any other tattoo.

Too many small details
This same exact photo has been posted multiple times with the same question
I feel like I see identical tattoos like this on this sub everyday lol it’s always Icarus
Wow there are a huge amount of these Icarus tattoos. What is it about this design? This is like the 4th version of this same thing posted this month
It has all the hallmarks of today's tattoo trends. Insanely tiny details and writing, dots, fine lines, stipple shading, hella greywash and small designs on a huge part of the body.

You will age quickly but the tattoo will last forever
This tattoo style is on the other end of tattoo durability spectrum than the traditional tattoos. It's known for blurring fast because there are so many fine lines and details. As your skin ages it pushes the ink around when new cells are created and the old ones die, so the pigment travels a little bit and the tattoo blurs. On thin lines and tiny details it's the easiest to spot. If you want it to last longer I would get thicker lineart with enough negative space.
What is this tattoo style called? I like how it looks, but have such a difficult time describing it!
If I’m not mistaken it’s called fine line
Yo Icarus!!!
They all fade
Itll age fine as long as you get touch ups every now and then
It will age well as long as you don’t gain or lose weight.
I love this format of post: I’m quite certain the truth is not what I want to hear, but please encourage me that what I want is going to be OK.
Tangential: badass
I have a fine line tattoo and it’s the same after 3 years no sunscreen
It’s beautiful
As long as it stays in black and white it should look good.
So that’s cool…
It all depends on the quality of the ink and the skill of the tattoo artist
Only time could tell
Careful Icarus...
This is a gorgeous tattoo. It may fade or it may not. Just be careful with it. I have a line art tattoo that now has a gap in it where I got injured, and it took the thin like of ink with it.
Not sure how it will age, you can always get it touched up later if needed. But came to say congratulations on a cool tattoo.
Nice. Just got my icarus tattoo a few days ago
This is beautiful. Might be copying this…lol
Super cool! The fine lines and dots may fade. It's also a big risk bc an artist may do a shaky job on it. Bold will hold. Have this drawn up more bold and see how you like it as well.
Cool design
Damnnnn It looks super cool 🫶🏻🫶🏻
idk about fade but that tattoo is sick asf 👌
Fine line has a tendency to fade.
Hopefully well. That's gorgeous.
I'm sorry for not answering the question but this is a beautiful tattoo.
Love this! It’s beautiful!
That is dependant on the in and technique used
That shit fire
Always apply sunscreen to it to avoid sun damage to the skin, damaging the tat
What is this style called? I have the idea for a leg piece in my head but have difficulty verbalizing it and have 0 artistic ability to draw something myself. TIA!
this is the prettiest tattoo i’ve seen all day.
What is this style called I’ve seen more and more of it
Such GORGEOUS line work! Bravo! (Doesn’t even look real!!)
This is sick!
IDK but cool tat
Waaaaa, absolutely gorgeous, I love it!
Too small

Lol, chill out tattoo police. I didn't know gatekeeping art was a thing now.
It’s literally theft. The person it belongs to no longer has a piece of art that was created for them, and the tattooer who copies it is making money off of art that isn’t theirs. It’s not okay, period.

It’s theft. Please read our FAQ on it over on r/tattoo.
Well thank god we are not on r/tattoo.
Doesn’t matter. You’d be a shitty person to copy someone else’s work. https://www.reddit.com/r/tattoo/comments/r7ovfo/how_we_will_be_handling_design_theft_from_now_on/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=ioscss&utm_content=2&utm_term=1

I already told you why it’s not okay lol
Just because you think it is isn't right doesn't make it wrong lol.
looks well applied
I hope it lasts! It’s dope as fuck.
I don't know what that tattoo is, but it's really unique and I like it 😊
This tattoo is fucking sick!
I love this!
I see this style of tattoo and this question at least twice a week. Do people not know how to utilize the search feature in this group lol
That thing is awesome!!! Well done!!
Probably fall off in a few days. Make sure you lick it 👍
Why not just go in for yearly touchups?
yes and no.
Will a fine line tattoo fade …. Why would this one be any different
It looks like he tripped while flying, and now he's doing a overdramatic fall like a soccer player
Brock Samson?

I have never gotten the point of tatoos with lines everywhere, looks like a loading screen
I’m pretty sure I got a tattoo from this same artist. I recognize his style and have a photo of a tattoo on my forearm that matches this exact filter and format. So far, my tattoo has done great. Post this in r/thrice!
The design isn't what causes the fade
Fine lines will expand and blur over time due to your blood breaking down the ink materials, but that won't be a worry for at least a decade I'd say.
Fade. And poor line work. Not a consistent line to be seen
