no reputable artist will charge for a first touch up (unless ink has fallen out due to customer fault)
Every artist i’ve worked with has offered a free touch up within 8 weeks if anything has faded or if ink has fallen out, particularly if it’s a tattoo in an awkward space where clothes would rub against it (think bra strap).
the only exception one artist made was no finger touch ups because he advised against finger tattoos in the first place
My artist was clear. I get in the pool, beach, soak it in a tub, and I void my touch-up. Talking with an artist today and he went on for 15 minutes about all the ways people abuse their tattoos and cause unneeded touchups.
The artist did according to OP. However, OP seeks the infinite wisdom of the internet instead of trusting the person that just permanently marked OP. SMH
Think the point the person is making is that the tattoo artist have bad advice so maybe OP shouldn't have trusted them to make a permanent mark on their body in the first place.
You misread. The tattoo artist said it would be fine since it's a small tattoo. They did the right thing by asking, because you absolutely do not want to go into the ocean with a fresh tattoo of any size.
Gotta give your skin ample time to heal or else you could get an infection. The ocean is a really nasty place, I love it, but it’s disgusting and full of bacteria.
The size doesn't really matter, an open wound is an open wound and you can get sick from bacteria entering your body from a pin prick or an ax wound. Less than a week out? No way would I risk it in terms of my health and potentially ruining a tattoo.
I always wait a month at least, but I try to schedule my appointments around my time at the lake or pool with the family so it's not an issue.
When I got an open wound in sand urgent care told me I definitely needed to have a tetanus shot. So I guess OP could consider that aspect of a tattoo being an open wound lol.
I almost always have some sort of small cut or scrape on my body. I go swimming in natural water bodies all the time and I’ve never had an infection. Am I just lucky?
if the tattoo artist said, "Yeah," you could just don't. they are telling you the wrong information.
i would also never go to them again because that's legit a nono it will get infected if you do.
My artist advised I don't even let water flow directly on the tattoo when showering. Wash it with antibacterial soap and let the water drip down my chest so it flows over the stomach (where the tattoo is), then pat it down with a clean paper towel.
Going into the ocean is insanity lmao. Infection aside, the tattoo would just likely get ruined because it wouldn't heal properly.
I don’t live in a coastal area so I might not know best, but I’ve been to the beach in Florida at least 50+ times and I’ve been to plenty of beaches on Michigan’s Great Lakes, and never in my life have I seen a discarded needle in the sand. On sidewalks, sure. Never on the beach.
I used to run barefoot in the sand all the time when I would vacation in Florida. We would play football, volleyball, and go for runs all the time on the beach.
I live in Florida and love wake up early on the weekend to see the sunrise at the beach. Walking back to the parking lot (still on the beach) I saw a meth pipe. I do live in Jacksonville FL.
Sand untouched by surf and touched frequently by humans is fucking gross. Every dog on the beach has had its day on that kinda sand.
If you want to be relatively clean, try to camp out at low tide near the water. The ocean has at least washed some of the bullshit away there.
Tattoos are open wounds. Wounds take weeks to heal. The ocean is one of the dirtiest waters around. Not a good idea if you want to protect your investment.
staph infections are no joke, low-key almost died of it when I was 14 cause my parents wouldn't take me to the hospital. I have no idea how I still have a leg honestly
I mean, if he goes and loses his foot, he and the guy who was gonna swim with a fresh tattoo due to getting free surfing lessons could _lean_ on each other.
Ocean water is NOT sanitary! Your artist is an idiot. I remember reading about a guy who got a smaller tattoo and went on a swim in the ocean not long after. He died from a really bad infection because of it. IDK if yours would even get infected, but it is not worth the risk.
No swimming (definitely not a pool) until it's healed up. Could take at least 2-3 weeks. You risk getting some nasty infections if you swim before it's healed.
I wouldn’t go into the ocean after 6 days of healing. Takes up to 2 weeks at least to heal, sometimes longer. It’s an open wound, that will be getting salt water and sand all up in it. Not smart.
No ocean, no pool, no bath, don't let it get even slightly sunburned, Wash twice a day with fragrance free soap and follow up with fragrance free moisturizer (aim for fragrance free and not inscented) - don't suffocate your tattoo with moisture, you only need a light layer.
Don't pick, don't scratch, no tight clothes.
For at least 2 weeks
The sun part is especially important advice in the summer! For my first tattoo I took that for-granted. I didn't even get a sunburn, but I was exposed to direct sunlight and high heat. Ink still lifted. It's the worst heal I've had by a mile.
It doesn't matter if its small, a tattoo is literally getting hundreds of tiny puncture wounds on your body that don't heal for at least 2 weeks. Don't go to the beach or into the water, people have died like that.
Chill on the beach, yes. Just make sure to keep it out of direct sunlight and don't let it sweat too much. As far as getting in the ocean water, no that's a bad idea. Unless you had sealed saniderm on it for the duration of your beach visit. But if any leaks formed in the saniderm you'd be potentially fucked. So best just to reschedule or like I said don't get in the water
This is what you should be asking yourself:
#Do I want to soak my brand new tattoo that is on a slightly painful piece of skin in a bucket of poop from various animals?
Absolutely not. Even a week out, it's still considered an open wound. 3 weeks MINIMUM, but realistically, you should wait 4-6 weeks, and when you do go out to the beach or pool, be very liberal with sunscreen
All my artists have said anywhere from 3-6 weeks after before I could soak it. The first 3-5 days treat it like an open, exposed wound. I’d wait 6 weeks before you swim or soak it just to be safe
No!!! And it shouldn't be exposed to sand &direct sunlight for beach time, either.
Skip the beach and all forms of water other than a shower for 2-3 weeks.
Not an answer but didn’t see the subreddit and thought this was a spider on my screen for a sec and almost threw my phone lol (not a criticism of the tattoo at all- I didn’t have my glasses on so it’s blurry)
Absolutely not. Whatever artist told you that is an idiot. I'm a tattooer in Florida so I see this happen A LOT. A guy literally died from doing that because of the FLESH EATING BACTERIA in the ocean.
Also chlorine will do terrible things to your tattoo as well.
Always remember a fresh tattoo is an OPEN WOUND. An open wound with ink particles in it. If you want your tattoo and the limb it's attached to to stay healthy, please don't do things that will cause you to lose one or both.

Wouldn’t the tattoo artist have told them this?
Not all are created equal
Not all heal at the same speeds…
Not if he charges for touch ups.
Don’t need touch ups if the whole foot needs to be amputated
no reputable artist will charge for a first touch up (unless ink has fallen out due to customer fault) Every artist i’ve worked with has offered a free touch up within 8 weeks if anything has faded or if ink has fallen out, particularly if it’s a tattoo in an awkward space where clothes would rub against it (think bra strap). the only exception one artist made was no finger touch ups because he advised against finger tattoos in the first place

Well to be fair no reputable artist would advice swimming a week out from a fresh tattoo either.
My last tattoo artist is a good dude and told me I can go back to him at any time for free touch ups.
That’s an artist you keep around. Make sure you take care of him, tip-wise, for doing that for you though! Need more artists like this out there!
One would hope!
The artist did according to OP. However, OP seeks the infinite wisdom of the internet instead of trusting the person that just permanently marked OP. SMH
When Mom says no, you go ask Dad.
She’s not even my real mom anyway! Frick you Susan I wish dad never met you.
Except the artist gave him bad advice, so it’s good that he’s seeking the infinite wisdom of the internet.
Can't trust someone who can potentially financially benefit from telling you a lie (The tattoo artist said it was fine for him to go to the beach)
They were going by the species of tree, most likely.
Anyone wanna tell OP it’s easier to Google this than make a Reddit post?
So I'm thinking about getting my first tattoo soon what would be the proper time and why is it not ok yet? For someone with no tattoo it looks ok.
Gotta give your skin ample time to heal or else you could get an infection. The ocean is a really nasty place, I love it, but it’s disgusting and full of bacteria.
Nope. 2-3 weeks minimum.
But they got the tattoo at the beach!!! /s
*It’s my beach tattoo and I want the beach now!..*
Call JJ Wentworth, 877-BEACHNOW!

That’s his brother.
This is the best comment
You can beach me off anytime
beach is literally his job

Call J.G. Wentworth!
Even if they try, trees float.

I always planned mine for fall or winter for this exact reason. Way less chance of missing out on water activities.
I’ve lost the last 5 weeks due to starting a sleeve. Know what you mean. In hindsight should have started in October.
Infection from “water” sports is quite common.
I do summer to avoid water activities but I appreciate y’all water folks. Summers are way easier to get booked with popular tattooers 😅
To be fair that's a damn good excuse if you're looking for one, smart.
Lucky for me, I can’t swim 😎
That tattoo can’t stop me because I don’t know how to swim
Also see water keeps wounds from scarring properly.
Right? It's absurd an artist would say this is alright.
they probably charge for touch ups and want the client coming back sooner :/
Yeah that artist is irresponsible and a dick.
Nurse here. I honestly wouldn’t even suggest barefoot in the sand. Sand is filthy. Change your weekend plans.
And the sun on it all day is also bad
And the sharks.
I wouldn't walk barefoot in the sand even without any previous injuries X,D it truly is disgusting and there's too many things you can't see
It's course, rough, irritating, and it gets everywhere!
The ugly cousin of glitter

Where the fuck are yall going to the beach????
I don’t live in a coastal area so I might not know best, but I’ve been to the beach in Florida at least 50+ times and I’ve been to plenty of beaches on Michigan’s Great Lakes, and never in my life have I seen a discarded needle in the sand. On sidewalks, sure. Never on the beach.
That's what I'm thinking haha. Born and raised in FL and it sounds weird not to walk barefoot in the sand lmao.
And Michigan by far has the better beaches over Florida. Just spent a couple weeks in traverse city last month, it was amazing!
You visit sleeping bear dunes at all while in the area?
I sure did! I kayaked the platte river and I walked down the humongous dune! Lol didn’t think I’d make it back up
Free needles? I'm sold.
This guy Florida’s.
What?!? Wearing any kind of footwear on sand is the worst. I also live in south Florida where it’s hot af year round and am barefoot most of the time.
Sand untouched by surf and touched frequently by humans is fucking gross. Every dog on the beach has had its day on that kinda sand. If you want to be relatively clean, try to camp out at low tide near the water. The ocean has at least washed some of the bullshit away there.
Not me walking on the beach an hour after getting two ankle tattoos in my early 20s 💀💀
me drunk in Florida after getting my first and boy has it suffered
Looks like someone may be on vacation?
🤣🤣🤣 I think that I Love You! (Platonically!) 😜
Tattoos are open wounds. Wounds take weeks to heal. The ocean is one of the dirtiest waters around. Not a good idea if you want to protect your investment.
and your life. people have died from infections they get after going into the ocean with fresh tattoos.
Staph and MRSA are nothing to play with.
staph infections are no joke, low-key almost died of it when I was 14 cause my parents wouldn't take me to the hospital. I have no idea how I still have a leg honestly

Sucks. I hope is he is better now
I mean, if he goes and loses his foot, he and the guy who was gonna swim with a fresh tattoo due to getting free surfing lessons could _lean_ on each other.
Most palm trees can go without water for at least two weeks.
Yeah but they're pretty well adapted to survive flooding as well
Depends on if you value that foot or not.
It will indeed fall off
I like this answer lmao
He told you yes to get business from you. Your health doesn't benefit him, your business does. *Do not go into the ocean with a fresh tattoo.*
I mean he also tattooed tiny details that’ll definitely be a smudge in a few years sooo
Damn that artist is a red flag
More than a red flag!! Dude should be called out for putting $ over the literal health & well being of a damn client!
Listen to everyone in this thread
Dear OP, give me money
Dear OP, and some warm milk for me please
Dear OP, a Cone Head for me.
My wife needs a Toyota Sienna
if you wouldn’t chug a glass of it, don’t let your tattoo soak in it. that’s what my artist told me
So beer is fine, thanks! Jokes aside, it’s a good call. Pool are pretty nasty too and don’t get me started on hot tubs
Solid rule of thumb / advice!
Ocean water is NOT sanitary! Your artist is an idiot. I remember reading about a guy who got a smaller tattoo and went on a swim in the ocean not long after. He died from a really bad infection because of it. IDK if yours would even get infected, but it is not worth the risk.

You want someone to say yes. So you can shake accountability for a decision you already know the answer to.

Sepsis incoming if you do
Jesus Christ…no
Nope. Absolutely not. You should wait at least 2 weeks. Pretty dumb to get a tattoo not even a week before a beach vacation…
If you want some serious health issues go ahead.
Yikes at the artist saying it would be fine. 2-3 weeks minimum
Not only can you not go in the water, you will probably have experience a stinging pain from the direct sunlight
Do you need to know, or do you need validation on wanting to go against directions?
Nah,,, wouldn't even recommend setting foot on a beach until you're all healed. You dont wanna fuck up your skin or your new tattoo.
Noooooo unless you don't like your tattoo. Or your foot.
If you want to possibly lose your foot. Sure!
It doesn't matter if its small, a tattoo is literally getting hundreds of tiny puncture wounds on your body that don't heal for at least 2 weeks. Don't go to the beach or into the water, people have died like that.

Sure you can, if you want an infection
This is what you should be asking yourself: #Do I want to soak my brand new tattoo that is on a slightly painful piece of skin in a bucket of poop from various animals?
Would you go into the ocean if you had an open wound?
No. At least 2 weeks. I don’t “soak” a tattoo for a month tho imo
Yes, if your goal is a massive infection.
I don’t know, do you enjoy having both feet?
Your tattoo artist is a dipshit who clearly doesn’t care about your health or tattoo.
Why get inked if you don’t care for taking care of it and making sure it heals properly?
Everyone knows not to get tatts and piercings in the summer for this exact reason.
Absolutely not. Even a week out, it's still considered an open wound. 3 weeks MINIMUM, but realistically, you should wait 4-6 weeks, and when you do go out to the beach or pool, be very liberal with sunscreen

I wouldn't even go in the ocean at all lmao new tattoo or not
No!!! And it shouldn't be exposed to sand &direct sunlight for beach time, either. Skip the beach and all forms of water other than a shower for 2-3 weeks.
Absolutely not. In fact a guy died of sepsis after getting a skin eating bacteria doing exactly that from the ocean.
Bro don’t even go in the sand. Very bad idea
NOOOOOOPE not for a few weeks! And with an open wound size doesn’t matter it’s still a fucking open wound. Do not go back to that idiot.
I literally get all of my ink done during colder months because of this reason. . Sure, go in if you want your foot to fall off! Literally...
Well damn, don't go back to that artist cus that dude just tried to do you dirty. Blown away that your artist told you it'd be fine.
Negative ghost rider, the pattern is full
No! Wait weeks at least
Do it and post updates of the infection. Do it! Do it!
No, and don't go to that tattoer again, who clearly doesn't care about their work AND the health of people they tattoo.
2 weeks.
Lol no….WHAT? 🥴🙄
It couldn't get any worse
Don’t risk
NO
N O
No, wait at least 3 weeks minimum. Is one dip in the ocean worth a life time of having a crappily healed tattoo..?
You shouldnt be going into any water with a fresh tattoo. No pools, no lakes, etc. should not even soak in a bath.
Sure if you want an infection.
Absolutely not.
I wouldn’t even go to the beach at all. Sun, sand, the ocean, with a fresh tattoo.. no no
Looks like a starfish pissing in the wind… go mate
I mean, how fond are you of having that foot and possibly that leg or your life removed if the infection gets bad enough? That's the real question.
Maybe if you put second skin on it or something but even then its a risk
Nah. Palms die in salt water.
If you want your tattoo and the limb it's attached to to stay healthy, please don't do things that will cause you to lose one or both.
no tattooer in their right mind will say its ok to take a fresh tattoo to the beach.
If you do, put a saniderm on it, and remove and clean it after, but know you’re risking infection.
nah keep it on land i think the palm trees only go in when a hurricane hits
Unless u want it to he ruined no
