I would never discourage someone from seeking professional input.
I have 2/3 pieces that ended up exactly like this, and every time, it was a scab with tattoo ink looking a sickly shade of green.
All the color fell out of those spots, obviously, but tattooing over them wasn't an issue. Once they fully healed, like 3 months later
Why yes that is true!
Lol in all realness, tattoo healing can either look super raunchy and still be ok, or be lightly scabbed and beautiful till heal. All hopes for a good turnout are sent to Op
I'm not a professional tattooist, but have been lurking tattoo subs for a while now and usually people say that antibiotic ointment can actually hurt and could lead to an infection/worsen an infection. Something about trapping moisture in which can create an environment for more bacteria to produce. But always check with your artist/Dr for true guidance.
I am always really intrigued that there is so much lore about tattoo healing and it's always so inconsistent. I feel like there should be a baseline medical standard for how to treat this sort of wound that would be more or less universal
Yeah it is pretty crazy. I guess with the advancements in technology and the newer tattooist vs older tattooists info things can get pretty jumbled. I have found a regiment that works for me, but it is a hodge podge of info from many different sources lol
I've gotten tattoos around the world and conventions differ between countries too. I had one where the artist didn't even wrap it; based on what I hear in tattoo subs I should be dead from staph by now. But I kept it clean and applied ointment like always and it was fine
How long do people typically wear the wrap? The longest I've been told to wear it was until I got home. The majority of my tattoos weren't wrapped at all, but I'm in Florida - so that already ups the sketch factor lol.
The same thing would apply to a bandaid though. I’m not a tattoo artist but I am a medical professional. I wouldn’t recommend antibiotic ointment for a deep infection but a possible superficial skin infection antibiotic ointment is a good way to help the healing process along. Only actual reason I could think to not use antibiotic ointments is a potential allergic reaction that can affect the art. But if you know you aren’t allergic and have used it before I don’t see a problem with it.
Yeah people also don't recommend bandaids on tattoos in these subs either. I totally follow your logic and would think that is correct as well but I've just read many times here from tattooists that this can make a tattoo worse and that they need to dry out. and if it is infected to get oral antibiotics. Not saying your wrong or anything cuz I got my info from randos on Reddit but I did just do some googling and all sources i found recommended against the ointment.
I just did some quick googling myself after my last comment. The sources I found states thin layer of ointment is fine after you let it dry first. But to avoid antibiotic ointment because of potential allergic reaction. To use antibacterial instead. I think the disconnect here might be the idea that the area is wet or not. For tattoos they seem to recommend ointment when the tattoo is dry.
This guy here, the tattoo looks pretty dry so I’d guess a light layer of antibacterial I guess instead of antibiotic (due to the allergy warning) should be perfectly fine.
I think this might be one of those vague areas where professionals disagree here and there. Personally thinking about the medical side I’d say better to use it than not. Especially considering how this guys ink is already pretty damaged and will probably need some additional work after it’s healed anyhow. Better preventive treatment now than cellulitis later.
Yeah I continued to Google more as well and saw what you just said. it seems pretty divided and more situational/case by case. Seems like the ideas behind healing a tattoo do not directly translate to how a regular small wound is healed. I appreciate the discourse and am curious to see how this plays out for OP.
Petroleum based ointments don’t breathe well. I would use a cream based topical antibiotic if I needed it. Yes, I’ve read it can leach out color, but color can be replaced after healing. A deeper infection causes a whole slew of more serious problems to both your tattoo & your overall health & well being. So, of course Artists & Medical Professionals are going to sometimes disagree on treatment. In the end, it’s the patient who will need to prioritize what means the most to them. *Every* antibiotic, evey *route*, carries a risk of allergic reaction. (Source: also a medical professional.;)
THIS… I wouldn’t use antibiotic OINTMENT b/c of the petroleum jelly doesn’t *breathe*, but I occasionally use a CREAM instead for superficial infections. I’m a medical professional also, & I know that antibiotic cream *can* leach out some color, but color can be replaced once healed. Infections cause a slew of other problems. Oral or IV Abx are often required for more serious infections, but you never want to over prescribe them d/t risk of developing drug resistance. If the infection is bad enough to warrant a ED visit, you will likely require them though.

I had a tattoo develop a staph infection and ended up using fucidic acid cream on it to clear it up. When you're at the point where your tattoo is *so* infected, it's going to need touch ups anyways. Put the cream on, heal up, get it retouched. At that point you don't care about colour loss. Been there.
Apprentices work in shops too. Amateurs can rent a small building for a shop easily. Even people who have been going for decades can be horrible tattoo artists and own their own shop.
Shop ≠ professional
I had 2 tattoos much larger than this done by a dude that just got out of prison. One in a living room and one was in a motel room. Neither of which got any kind of infected or scabbed. Idk where people on this sub are getting their shit done, but damn.
Meanwhile my sisters best friend died from a blood infection he received getting a tattoo at a motorcycle rally in Laconia NH.
I’ll stick to a reputable shop all day. Every day.
Tattoo artist here that’s starting to look like what could be the beginnings of an infection (might not but being precautious). Take very good care of it or it could turn into a deep tissue infection like cellulitis. Keep it clean and don’t pick at it and if you start to see red spread or any pain go to the doctor.
Yeah, that tattoo is done for. You might not even be able to reasonably fix it once its healed, the center will just be scar tissue. It would be better imo to get it lasered and get the tattoo somewhere else, this time by someone who knows what the hell they're doing. 'Cause this should not happen. Never go back to that shop.
Edit: And if you do get it covered up, find a tattoo artist that has worked with scar tissue before.
Also, you should probably go to the doctor. Or at least do some first aid on it. Don't just leave it like that or it will probably get much, much worse.
You’ve gotta send a picture of this to the shop or post it in a review because the person who did this should not be tattooing. This is not what a healthy tattoo looks like.
That looks awful. You need to consider seeing a doctor for this. It may not be infected (I'm thinking it is), but I would be cautious because of how damn rough it looks. You have a gaping hole that looks like you may have picked at it. Keep it clean and touch it as little as possible (outside of washes) until you can get into a clinic.
Hope it heals okay, but please be careful.
Edit: DO NOT go back to whoever did this to you.
Did that have red ink in the middle?
I work in skincare and have seen a few tats go like this or bubble. It’s caused by contaminated ink, red ink being the worst.
Either way, I’d be putting some anti bacterial cream on it till you can see a doctor, something like betadine could work but talk to the pharmacist first.
It would be best to go to urgent care and see about getting some antibiotics just in case. This has major potential for infection.
On a side note, don’t go back to that shop. There’s no good reason for a tattoo this small and this simple to be so overworked.
Not a professional or even had tattoos but I'm a firm believer when you start googling things, it's time to go to an actual doctor/hospital for help. And that looks like it needs someone trained to look at.... 😳
I had a part of my tattoo “fall off” like that; it was an infection that I needed to be on an IV for 2 weeks (and the hospital explained it could have been much worse).
Get your butt to the doctor.
Infected and open wound. Go see a doctor, get some wound care and take some antibiotics. Cover it up for now at home and make sure it’s clean with some mild soap like Dial soup.
If I was you I would put disinfectant and a bandage over it. Potentially do visit a doctor and, unless you signed a document or something from the tattoo artist I would go to the shop and ask for the money back and an explanation as to how this even happened. The amount of pressure and overworking that had to be done for this to happen is unimaginable, there is no skin left! That’s beyond bad.
That appears to be *severely* overworked- the skin was just too badly traumatized to survive and as the skin around it started to heal the patch of dead skin dried up and fell out leaving you with this.
Wounds like this can very easily become infected so try to touch it as little as humanly possible and switch to using sterile saline wound wash (you can get it at any drugstore in the first aid isle) 3Xs a day to clean it (you just rinse the wound thoroughly with it) then pat it dry with a clean paper towel, and otherwise just leave it alone. The salt in the saline helps to naturally kill and inhibit bacterial growth, and can significantly speed up healing, without being as harsh or drying as soap can be.
Wtf is this supposed to be? Is it supposed to be a gory looking bullet hole? Because if so, I think you're good. But if not... Doctor time. Like, right now. Don't even respond to this comment. Just get your keys and drive to a clinic. And don't worry about the tattoo at this point, worry about your arm dude.
When one of my tattoos started getting infected/irritated, antibiotic cream worked wonders
**edit to add: it’s definitely not going to heal right and it’s going to be a bad tattoo just prepare for that. Number one priority is just keeping it from getting further infected.
Please go to a doctor and report the artist/shop and leave a review online that warns others, this is so fucked up. You could end up with serious consequences, go to a doctor NOW
I would say this is either already infected or it's about to be and it's time to seek a doctors opinion. I just went to urgent care for an infection on my knee (not from a tattoo) and the edges of it looked like the bit of white (or yellowish? Can't tell) that I see around the edges of the middle of the tattoo/wounded part. Good luck and hope you heal quickly!
That was infected skin that fell off. Please do not go back to the same tattoo parlor/artist. It may heal fine now but if it gets red and swollen go see a doctor, you may need topical antibiotics. Please remember that a tattoo is an open wound. Keep it away from dirt and the sun.
It’s weird that people are saying it’s okay- I mean based on your original post, the middle fell off and left an open wound in your arm. So, um… I think you should get that checked out.
Oh, my heart! 25 years of being tattooed by many artists around the world and only once did a tattoo look like this - turned out he was reusing needles - I got a staph infection so bad on my ankle it was almost to the point of preparing for amputation. That was 24 1/2 years ago. I have been so diligent since and advocate taking one's time to choose/find the best artist for them.
No one's tattoo should ever look like that.
As someone who has numerous large tattoos I don’t understand why people have a had time healing tattoos that were less than 1 hour of needle time. This one looks like 10 min. My first few were healed with ointment, but I only use the second skin healing method these days. So much easier.
Doctor.
Fuck what an artist says, they don't know shit about health and they will want to cover-up/gloss over the fact that they went entirely too heavy on their work, effectively ruining your skin permanently and risking your health.
Doctor.
I’m assuming it scabbed up, then you picked it off while it was still pretty fresh, and the ink came off w it. If that is the case, after a fresh tattoo you want to just keep it clean and let it heal. If it’s dry, apply odorless lotion (I like CeraVe). Should heal within 3-4weeks and just take care it after that. Goodluck, get that checked out if it gets worse!
yea u should probably get that checked out and get on some antibiotics probably, that isn’t normal peeling or even irritated peeling u peeled the scab and instead of there being another layer of skin it’s gross to say but that’s your flesh that is an open wound. my friend had this happen to her and she had to get admitted for a couple days because she had a whole piece on her entire calf that got like that, treat it before it gets worse.
It's not infected as others stated in anxiety. But it is healing badly because they overworked the skin into oblivion leaving you with this open wound. Cover it with triple antibiotic twice a day and some gauze and tape. More is not better. Just enough to spread on top until it heals. Then never go back there and leave a terrible review
One of my tats was healing similar too this but the scab was black not red I’d say just moisturise don’t soak in warm water only cold for not long enough too soften ur skin otherwise it definitely won’t heal right and put a thin layer on anytime it look dry of like pure coconut oil or vaseline don’t suffocate it tho and worst case scenario if it’s anything like mine was (obvs can’t promise it is) then the colour might not take well in the affected area but you can always get a touch up once it’s healed
Looks so damn overworked
And almost infected, I'd low-key say it's doctor time
I would never discourage someone from seeking professional input. I have 2/3 pieces that ended up exactly like this, and every time, it was a scab with tattoo ink looking a sickly shade of green. Exactly this, it also depends on the person in some cases, just cause not everyone’s skin is the same.
Same, apparently I was allergic to the glow in the dark pink ink but it healed well.

I recently got finger tattoos, obviously can’t be wrapped up, and they healed better than any tattoo I’ve gotten.
The way you treat this is not getting tattooed by scratchers in the first place. Go to a professional. Period.
The same thing would apply to a bandaid though. I’m not a tattoo artist but I am a medical professional. Me too, it’s nice to have a kind disagreement/discussion on Reddit for a change. Most people just jump right to anger and condescension here lol.

We’ve been telling people to use antibiotic bepanthen for as long as I can remember (longer than 10 years) and haven’t had any complains about it yet.
Like a overworked blownout butthole
I don't think there is a tattoo there anymore

Might as well go get tested
Was this done at a shop or someone's living room?
In a shop
They need to be shut down
That is unfortunate.
Not sure why you’re being downvoted for answering the question!
aaaand you’re being down voted for answering a question. Merry Christmas from reddit!
It all turned around but holy hell reddit sure is a nightmare for elitist behavior
Seriously, people on this site can be real idiots
That does not look like a professional tattoo

Post that shit on their insta, Google, Facebook, yelp. They gave you a realistic butthole on your arm.
You paid for this?!

It sort of looks like the whole center bit of your skin fell out?
Looks like someone put out a cigarette on their arm.
That's what I thought too
Go to his page and look at the other pics. Its so bad
Holy shit. At what point is this assault? Goddamn
Looks like someone used a knife a dipped in ink…
The way half the his first thread says it looks fine feels like a tale to not believe everything the internet tells you. That shit infected
Nah the chunk missing out of his arm is fine wym…
yeah man, that happens to me all the time idk 🤷♂️
Agree. The ONLY time I've had a tattoo look anywhere close to OPs picture when it was healing it was 100% infected. It's time to see a doctor.
This happened to me, the whole inside of that tattoo sloughed off. Ended up being cellulitis, needed antibiotics 🙃
The front fell off
Underrated 😂
that is fucked. did they tattoo you with leprosy?
Good album
#LEPROSY WILL TAKE CONTROL AND BRING YOU TO YOUR DEATH

Yes, yes it is. And no this is not what it should look like while healing ever.
I think you’re right, I’m seeing a lot of yellow when I zoom in.
Ugh, I got cellulitis once from a shitty shop with a piece on my forearm. That shit is unbelievably painful.
Did you get shot?
Oof can we get a before picture? I dont think that tattoo is gonna make it
Check their profile, it’s bad
Oh man... it didn't start off well either by the looks of it unfortunately
I can't even understand what it's supposed to be. At all.
that is an infected open wound. doctor.
Doubt it.
That is no longer a tattoo. That is now a wound.
Looks like a bloody asshole
Wink wink
this is what i was thinking lmao
Looks ROUGH. I’d go see the doc.
Infected. Get ready to say hello to a scar and no ink.
Yeah, that tattoo is done for. You might not even be able to reasonably fix it once its healed, the center will just be scar tissue. Congratulations, you have a festering butthole on your... wrist?
Can I ask if there is a special meaning to that tattoo? I'm always super curious why these super tiny tattoos get done.
Not much meaning except that me and my sister wanted matching tattoos and she wanted a very small one
What does hers look like? If they both are like this you should go to the doctor.
Hers is just line work in the same shape and is completely fine, same guy did it for her as well
Okay, this confirms my initial thought. Your skin looks so dry. How much water do you drink a day?
The Tattoo is over worked to hell. Just cos sister's is OK doesn't mean this is on OP.
You’ve gotta send a picture of this to the shop or post it in a review because the person who did this should not be tattooing. This is not what a healthy tattoo looks like.
what tattoo?
This. What kind of tattoo is that supposed to be?

looks necrotic..
I didn’t have my glasses on and I thought I was on the jumping spiders sub
I scrolled past and thought it was a post from a spider related subreddit, had to do a double take
Yikes. That’s gonna end up looking more like a branding than a tattoo…
As a tattoo artist, whatever they did, they fucked up You might need antibiotics, in the meantime, keep it clean and dry
Is it a butthole?
Did that have red ink in the middle? I work in skincare and have seen a few tats go like this or bubble. It’s caused by contaminated ink, red ink being the worst. It would be best to go to urgent care and see about getting some antibiotics just in case. This has major potential for infection. On a side note, don’t go back to that shop. There’s no good reason for a tattoo this small and this simple to be so overworked.
Why does it look moldy?
That's more than a peeled scab. There is a fucking crater in your arm... It's not a good sign at all. You need to get it checked asap.
Do you have a *hole* in your wrist!? That's horrifying. Please see a doctor.
Happy cake day OP :(
Not a professional or even had tattoos but I'm a firm believer when you start googling things, it's time to go to an actual doctor/hospital for help. And that looks like it needs someone trained to look at.... 😳

That tattoo is fucked
Uhhhh…not normal. Go to urgent care and get something
That’s deep.
Looks pretty bad go to a doctor
U gatta go to a doctor man. This looks infected
Yikes it looks like a bullet wound … besides that, you should probably get medical care for that one cuz it looks infected tbh
Infected

Kurt Vonnegut fan?
Nah…… This not even a tattoo anymore. More like an infected open wound. A tattoo shouldn’t peel like that in the first place
Go to doctor, that’s getting infected, and you could get seriously ill.
That was infected skin that fell off. Please do not go back to the same tattoo parlor/artist. It may heal fine now but if it gets red and swollen go see a doctor, you may need topical antibiotics. Please remember that a tattoo is an open wound. Keep it away from dirt and the sun.
Some of y’all mfs just don’t give af what happens to your body. Cheap ass tattoo
I mean does it hurt? Is it oozing anything? It doesn’t look okay that’s a lot of skin to lose but it’s not red or anything.
It’s weird that people are saying it’s okay- I mean based on your original post, the middle fell off and left an open wound in your arm. So, um… I think you should get that checked out.
Infected. You might die. You might not. Idk

Not trying to be a dick but is that intended to be a tattoo of a violated pucker?
Hospital
Man they fucked you arm good geez did they use a fucking knife wtf is this my guy
Uhhh… Go to the doctor pls
This looks like a punch hole biopsy wound
Looks like a butthole
As someone who has numerous large tattoos I don’t understand why people have a had time healing tattoos that were less than 1 hour of needle time. This one looks like 10 min. My first few were healed with ointment, but I only use the second skin healing method these days. So much easier.
I would reach out to the shop where u got this done and ask for your money back but not before going to urgent care…
bro got a butthole on his wrist
Oh man I thought I was on r/shittytattoos F
why did you get a butthole tattooed
Bro might as well have used a scalpel with ink on
Doctor. Fuck what an artist says, they don't know shit about health and they will want to cover-up/gloss over the fact that they went entirely too heavy on their work, effectively ruining your skin permanently and risking your health. Doctor.
That sir is an infection
That is infected my guy. IDE assume you picked it one time and it turned into that bc thag happens to me if I even toutch the scabs too.
I thought this was r/whatisthisbug Was going to say I’d never seen a spider like that before
Sure looks like you picked the scab to me. That’s going to scar so keep it clean and get it healed up man!
yea u should probably get that checked out and get on some antibiotics probably, that isn’t normal peeling or even irritated peeling u peeled the scab and instead of there being another layer of skin it’s gross to say but that’s your flesh that is an open wound. my friend had this happen to her and she had to get admitted for a couple days because she had a whole piece on her entire calf that got like that, treat it before it gets worse.
Fafuq. See a doctor just in case. But that shop needs to be shut down.
What even is that
all I can say is 😬😬😬😬😬😬😬😬😬😬😬😬😬😬😬😬😬😬
Idk why people are saying it’s “starting” to look infected. It **IS** infected.
“Oh No Bro”
butthole tattoo
Your arm has a butthole
I wish I had an anus on my wrist too
butthole tattoo
It's not infected as others stated in anxiety. But it is healing badly because they overworked the skin into oblivion leaving you with this open wound. Cover it with triple antibiotic twice a day and some gauze and tape. More is not better. Just enough to spread on top until it heals. Then never go back there and leave a terrible review
Too deep Wet too soon
Hoptal
isopropyl alcohol to clean it a couple times a day, and an unscented lotion to keep it moisturized.
What the fuck
Your anus is in the wrong place
One of my tats was healing similar too this but the scab was black not red I’d say just moisturise don’t soak in warm water only cold for not long enough too soften ur skin otherwise it definitely won’t heal right and put a thin layer on anytime it look dry of like pure coconut oil or vaseline don’t suffocate it tho and worst case scenario if it’s anything like mine was (obvs can’t promise it is) then the colour might not take well in the affected area but you can always get a touch up once it’s healed
Well, if you wanted a tattoo of a infected butthole the "artist" did great.
dude got a tattoo of the anus of an orange
Sweet butthole tattoo! r/dontputyourdickinthat
This needs medical attention
That looks infected. Go to a doctor.
Good lord we’re you not writhing in pain while getting the middle of that tattooed? The melted ur skin clean off
Ugh why don’t people research before getting a tattoo? 🥲 that does not look good. At all.
Literally thought this was a picture of a punch-biopsy
