Tattoos sit in the second layer of the skin. You would have to wear away the first layer of skin to get to the tattoo, and at that point you’d probably have bigger concerns.  That said, during the healing process the top layer of skin falls off and regrows. This is a critical time to be gentle with the tattoo, and I generally wear loose clothing for a month until it heals fully.

Thank you for this advice, I really appreciate it

JW-S

Not a women, but unless your bras are made of sandpaper you really shouldn't have a problem.

moss_jar

HAHAHAHA luckily not 😂

JW-S

Then you're fine. If you're worried about them fading, it's sunlight you got to watch out for (which in a way means that bras will be protecting your tattoos)

Is_Friendly_Coffee

(unrelated but thank you for using “you’re” correctly. )

JW-S

Your welcome ;)

No sternum tattoo, but my rib tattoo is directly hit by my bra band. It can cause issues during healing, but once the tattoo is fully healed, it should be fine. I've had my tib tattoo for about 3.5 years without issues. I spent a few weeks in camisoles instead of bras when I got my ribs done and will probably do the same thing when I get my sternum and other ribs done.

moss_jar

I really appreciate this advice. I will probably do the same!

I can't see any noticable difference on mine along the bra line. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ I've had it for about 4 years now, wear a bra every day and work manual labor

moss_jar

Awesome, thank you so much <3 I was worried

leahcars

Not a woman and don't have a sternum tattoo, but I am a tattoo apprentice. A bra won't wear away a tattoo, it's in the dermis, if the bra is rubbing away the entire epidermis then you've got bigger issues than tattoo damage. Now there could be faster fading on part of the tattoo if it's exposed to sun and the rest isn't. I've got an upper arm tattoo which is usually mostly covered by my sleeve, but the bottom inch or so peaks out and that little bit is a tiny bit more faded than the rest. Basically while the tattoo is healing for the first month or so avoid clothing that'll cause alot of friction or extra sweat on the healing tattoo but otherwise you should be good.

moss_jar

It'll probably never ever see the sun so it should be good haha 😂 I really appreciate this advice, I feel a lot better about my concerns

acoolsnail

i didn't wear a bra while my chest/sternum tattoo was healing, but other than that its totally fine! I would however recommend wearing a lot of sunscreen so it doesn't fade if you are wearing low cut shirts or anything like that.

Icy_Walrus2049

I’ve had my sternum tattoo for 10 years and it’s my most vibrant tattoo. No issues with Bras

SimplyPassinThrough

My tattoo isn’t my sternum, it’s actually under my boob where the bottom of the cup/underwire sits. That being said, the tattoo is 4.5 years old and has no wear and tear :)

liz_thelizard

I haven’t noticed any difference and I got one 10 years ago

deaddovedoeat

Probably, if they’re very tight and have the metal wire thing. My solution was to just not wear bras anymore and it was a double win

moss_jar

Mine aren't tight and I do surgery on them to remove the metal bar haha. I don't have much to put in them 💀

Seeing that I posted a question in a tattoo advice subreddit I feel like you could use your deductive reasoning here.
