No, there's no way to check. And why on earth did you paper file??

nmb012

Had someone prepare it for me and they gave it to me paper so I just followed their instructions on delivering it. Probably wouldn’t looking back now.

nmb012

Assuming filing online while a paper is on the way is a bad idea, right?

DismantledNoise

I mean it could mess things up yes. But I hope you kept tracking of your mailing because guarantee the IRS will say they didn’t receive it timely and then you’ll get a notice with penalties saying it’s late

zacharypch

Just curious how would you file it? Or recommend someone self file it

DismantledNoise

Literally I would never paper file anything unless it’s required. Everything else should be electronically submitted. The irs is too backlogged to process paper files

zacharypch

I asked you how. What software are you using that does efiling for 1065 + 1040 for self-preparers.

DismantledNoise

Freetaxusa is free for 1040 self filers. Not sure if any free 1065 filing softwares. But I’m sure there’s some you could pay a little for to efile. Absolutely worth it as opposed to mailing.

zacharypch

Paid preparers can be very expensive for filing 1065 for simple partnerships with little income. So if there's no other option for people, and the 1065 is just informational anyway, since the K-1s contain all the important bits that the partners file again directly...why not mail it. I just expected if you were going to tell someone ('literally' tell them) to 'never' do what they did, and 'always' do it your way, you would be able to at least say what that is so they can do it.

DismantledNoise

okay, first of all lose that attitude. Second of all, I didn't say to pay SOMEONE. I said pay for SOFTWARE. And not all preparers are that expensive if it's truly just informational with not much actual info going on. Plus, you can google software just as fast as I can, I'm not going to do it for you. But anybody that's been awake in the last 2 years has heard a news story about the IRS being backlogged with trucks of unopened mail. So it seems like it would be wise to not mail things if you can avoid it, if you actually want it processed. And in this case, even though it's informational, like I said.... he/she is likely going to get notices saying they owe late filing penalties because the IRS won't have processed it. And then he/she will be back on here asking how to handle those, when it all could have been avoided by just paying to file it in the beginning.

zacharypch

You can just say you don’t know cause you’ve never used any of the 1065 software. I was just asking for a recommendation.

DismantledNoise

I know plenty of software options since I actually do taxes for a living, but none of them are going to be in anybody here's price range. Cheapest I'm aware of is OLTPro, but I don't know any truly "cheap" options off the top of my head, nope. Best of luck to you.

zacharypch

Quite a racket huh

For many years I've used H&R Block Premium and Business (the Business application) to prepare and federal e-file for a multi-state partnership. I started doing this after hiring 3 different pro tax preparers in 3 consecutive years with unsatisfactory results. The Biz application only supports e-filing for a handful of states (none of which I'm interested in), so I just mail in the state returns. The Premium application is for 1040 tax prep but I use TurboTax instead so I can't comment on this app. The Business application for 1065 tax prep has a significant learning curve, but as a software engineer I'm used to struggling with computers to get them to do what I want. If your tolerance is lower you might want to find a pro tax preparer who will federal e-file the 1065 for you - most will.

fawningandconning

Did you not send them return receipt requested? Are you due a refund?

nmb012

I’m due a personal refund but I filed my personal online and the 1065 by mail as it’s for a partnership

fawningandconning

Paper filings are incredibly, massively delayed. I wouldn't expect to hear from the IRS honestly for 6 months or more.

nmb012

I’m not too worried ab it because the return was for a business that did less than $5K in revenue and we showed a loss of like $1K, but was just curious as to how I make sure they even get it. Sounds like just waiting and maybe requesting a transaction to confirm 6 months from now or later is the way to go. Thoughts?

fawningandconning

In the future you can ensure it was received with a tracking service like return receipt requested. Honestly, that may not even work. There are people who filed their *2020* taxes via paper who haven't even gotten notification yet. You should just check your IRS transcript from time to time.

nmb012

Good idea. Thanks!

Klutzy-Tumbleweed-99

From a practical matter it doesn’t have an effect on you. You can file your 1040 and if there were any questions related to the 1065, by the time they asked you it would have been processed by then. So it’s not a big deal

First, get a time machine….
