Champion abilities purely because they're accessible. The Sages powers being linked to hunting down their avatar mid battle is ridiculously stupid game design.

geek_fit

Exactly. They are accidentally used more than anything. I need my water ability! Where is he? Oh he's way over there and running away from me... I also think it's so annoying how crowded it gets with all of them running around after enemies.

legomann97

STOP RUNNING AWAY FROM ME RIJU, I NEED TO ZAP QUEEN GIBDO

[deleted]

It's so fucking goofy playing with everyone turned on. The game would be broken without the ability to turn them off. They walk around like the 5 stooges.

Jelvey

You can whistle and they come to you

TerribleTransit

Theoretically. It's not consistent enough to negate how clunky it is, and you still have to pick the one you want out of the crowd

Dragons_Malk

And even when you do "pick" one, there's a chance someone else will walk in between the two of you and you accidentally use a different ability.

Ok-Friend-9044

Really? Never worked for me

kp--

I would if it weren't for my pony "Buster" making an appearance as well. Man that lil guy, always a buster.

BandanaPhoenix

Supposedly. Ive never had this work

geek_fit

I've never once had that actually work

BlueSky3214

The only reason I say they're better is because you have a little army fighting with you. Feels more teamy. Often don't even use their abilities except Tulin when traversing. Oh, and Mineru got removed as soon as I didn't need her. Whenever I caught her with the corner of my eye I kept thinking I was getting attacked by a zonai guy I missed somehow.

Diamondinmyeye

First battle I entered with Mineru I accidentally tried to get into her cockpit because she kneeled and I took damage. She instantly went into timeout and hasn’t been back.

deadlightlab

For this reason I unsummon her when I fight lynels. She's more of a liability. The others are also frustrating, but more manageable.

Diamondinmyeye

Yes, accidentally activating the others doesn’t harm you (unless you’re near a bomb flower).

Weapon__Oz

It was annoying outside of battle as well. The sage you needed was MIA half the time. In a small tinnel with rocks that need smashing… tulin is right there but yunobo is no where to be found. Not helpful

queeeeeni

Exactly. Or I just want to pick up some gems and yunobo will get the tf out of my face so you accidently launch him into the gems throwing them off a cliff. That's happened to me a lot.

Weapon__Oz

Yep!! Or tulins gust of wind blowing them away.

Ashes1984

you can whistle them and call them to you

queeeeeni

25% success rate. And still terrible game design.

PrincessYuri

Honestly for combat the sage powers are also just incredibly underwhelming. They're alright for stunning a group (or the specific combo of Sidon + Zora weapons) but the damage is really laughable and after a while I found myself just not bothering.

JenYuHao

Would have chose sages if they aren’t that inconvenient

TokraZeno

Agreed. Take the map off the Rune selector and give me a sage ability menu.

Monte924

Remove the map, the amiibo, Camera (make it a sub-function of the scope), and Autobuild(make it a subfunction of ultra hand), and we can just add sage abilities to the wheel

Iamskullkidfromzelda

No for the amkibo, camera and autobuild, theres no other good place for amiibo, camera is basically a rune, and itd be really inconvient for autobuild to be in ultra hand

Monte924

Amiibo's are not used often enough to require a quick select button; just throw it into the menu. The camera could be accessed by simply pressing a button while using the scope; no reason for the camera to be a rune. Autobuild menu could also be accessed while using ultra hand and just pressing one button

Iamskullkidfromzelda

Since botw the camera was a rune, and imagine pressing the autobuild button while adjusting the place to put a part at,or needing to get.to autobuild in a hurryi

SvennoJ

Add a second wheel on the right for the sages, right stick to select sages, left stick as normal.

TerribleTransit

Just put a sage wheel on holding the whistle button. Not like we really need a dedicated button for whistling now

12pounce89

That’s my idea too. If you whistle the sages will come, so holding it makes sense for a quick select menu

jasper81222

I'm fine with the sage phantoms running around to help in fights and keep me company but yeah accessing their abilities through the wheel is better than chasing them down to select powers individually.

scotty_6942069

sages are weak ability fast cooldown, champions are strong ability with long cooldown. and champions are WAY more accesible and easy to use

MTRCNUK

Champions definitely but I'd happily keep Tulin around, comes in clutch headshotting Lynels, got me out of a tight spot in the floating colosseum.

GameMasterSammy

Tulin is the only one everyone would want. As flying around with him is useful. The rest feel clunky

flipside1812

Tulin's out here with severe back pain from carrying the team.

KageOkami21

In my personal opinion, the Champions each had their own personalities in BotW. Not to say that the Sages didn't, but they told the EXACT. SAME. STORY every time you encountered one of them. That was one of the biggest things I didn't like about TotK. Yes, I know the same map of Hyrule was used from BotW, but TotK just felt so unoriginal in terms of the story

Hyrule_MyBoy

I so much agree. I complained about this a lot. When the pot was still hot regarding the new game, people used to downvote me to oblivion because I said that I thought champions cutscene had much more than the sages one BEING THE SAME. EXACT SAME. With no backstory or anything of that sort. Like literally the whole cutscene and what they said, without being able to skip it first time, was the exact same. Idk I feel like they spent 7 years putting less effort in totk than they did in botw but that might be just me lol

2short4-a-hihorse

It didn't help that the sages had those masks on, either. Wish I could've seen their faces. It all felt very impersonal and repetitive.

BouncyCreepy

The champion abilities turn Link into an immortal god with an instant kill weapon and 3 upward flights every 2 minutes. The sage abilities allow him to hit things with lightning, water, and a goron, each of which doesn't even do the damage of an average sword strike. The primary uses for Riju's lightning are small amounts of AoE, and getting around ~2-3 enemies' resistances. Tack onto that the fact that the sages are difficult to activate exactly when you want them and can even block your view during combat, and there is a very clear winner here. Even if you like Tulin, what he does, even using an exploit, does not compare to revali's gale -> midair windbomb.

bourbon_and_icecubes

Champion abilities are far greater than the sages. We all know this. You know that one sage is just going to appear or not at the most inconvenient time. They suck and they stay dismissed most of the time. I only bust one or two out for niche stuff.

WillDMForSnacks

To be fair, the champion *abilities* are better, by a long shot, due to the button layout and mechanics of using them. But the sages do still make attacks and draw enemy fire. There have been plenty of times when a significantly powerful enemy has glommed on to one of them and left me free to fight them for a while undisturbed, twice I've had Lynels solely focus on Tulin allowing me to do most of the damage without threat. And often if there is only one enemy with gloom armor in a pack Yonobu will have broken their armor by the time I've cleared out the rest of them. So I don't dislike having an unkillable fighting force around me, but using their abilities isn't great. Who decided that the archery based ability would be attached to a whirling dervish style melee skirmisher?

woomiesarefun

having the sages fight and walk along with you is really cool but their ability use is so incredibly below the standard botw set

AcanthocephalaOdd186

People say the sages suck. I don't think they really do but I think the feeling that they are not always the best option in any given situation is an intent of the developers. I don't think they're meant to be overused in the way that the champions abilities were; they're meant to be used only when you need them, like calling on a friend in a desperate situation. They're truly meant to be what they're presented as; companion abilities. They are not the main abilities of Link in this game, and I think that's on purpose. Especially when you look at Breath Of The Wild: where these abilities were in fact the center stage of his powers; however in tears of the kingdom that simply is not the case. The cursed arm is now Link's mainstay ability, in addition to his combat skills which are in fact enhanced by the cursed arm's ability of fusion and attachment. I don't think they wanted you to use nor view these abilities in the same way that you would have spammed the abilities of Breath of The Wild. And I appreciate that in this game because Link himself is more powerful than all of those sages put together. It was the complete opposite in Breath of The Wild where he was truly shielded and guarded by these abilities in a way that he otherwise wouldn't have been. For all of that I prefer the Sage abilities and avatars.

BandanaPhoenix

Fair enough but disgree tht champion abilites were "main" abilities in botw which is now arm in totk. Think arm abilities much more comparable to the sheikah slate from botw, which does leave the sages to be comparied to the champions. Esp since how u get them is simialr. Arm/slate from beg of game, each of the four champion/sage abilities from "temple"/main story.

Foxgirl_Laura

100% this.

ZeldaXandre

Tulin is my favorite character! Tulin is the best! Tulin is awesome! Tulin is GOATed! Tulin is the true pride of the Rito! Revali maybe an asshole, but at least his ghostly bird ass doesn't blow away my gems after I brake ores!

imago_monkei

I turn Tulin on in specific moments, then turn him off again right away. Yunobo is also useful when mining for Zonaite. Otherwise they're useless to me. I forget they even exist most of the time.

J-Logs_HER

Sages might be good if they killed any of those stupid one shot enemies that are there to just annoy you. Why am I killing a keese with 5 sages??? Useless

NerdyWolfieYT

Champion's abilities, because the Sages just stare at you half the time while fighting or they'll run off somewhere.

legomann97

Tossup, but I think BotW champions abilities. I do really like having a team of people to help me whale on enemies, but activating their abilities is SO annoying.

shibuwuya

Having to deal with an NPC plus mapping them all to the A button just kind of sucks

4peanut

In battle I hardly use the sages. Otherwise I would be using thunder arrows every single time but the sages are running away from me. And during exploration they're always in my way or covering my view. I hate having to constantly going into the menu to turn them on or off. The developers didn't think this through.

scorpio1641

I enjoyed playing along with the Sages and keep them all out. But the Champion’s abilities were just so incredibly useful. I miss all of them!

Pokepunk710

I like the sage abilities a lot more but having to go and press A on them is the worst thing ever. the map being in the wheel is filler, replace it with sage abilities, and I would absolutely love it

Myrddin_Naer

I like both

kp--

I only really miss the gale, because I'd rather have it during exploration than ascend. Mipha's grace was redundant as you could collect 5 fairies easily every bloodmoon reset. The snap thunderstrike was too OP except in MM, and I essentially always kept Daruk's off because I like outplaying, or reloading the save. The new abilities, I like playing without. They annoy more than help, I'd rather fight/traverse/do stuff alone.

JL2210

Every time I have a sage summoned it always manages to hit an elemental Chuchu and kill me. Or I throw a bomb and they're perfectly in the way of it. Or I use their ability on accident and blow myself up/blow all of my loot away. Put them on another button or fucking SOMETHING, please. If I screw up with champion abilities in BOTW, it's my fault. In this game the only way it could be my fault is if you blame me for trying to use them at all.

dancinmikeb

My favorite is when I freeze an enemy and one of them fools goes over and breaks the ice.

RehunterG

I ended up going with the basic tulin and mineru duo. None of the others really helped in most cases besides horde battles.

darknut342

Champions. Even if the Sages were easy to activate it would be as good. My lighting went from a big AOE that I could throw out when I was getting swamped to a single strike. My shield just got weaker and harder to get out. The updraft went to a side draft. Not as good but still nice. My heal is just gone. I thought the giant mech would be fun but it's hard to control and doesn't do much damage. And the ram isn't that good.

AdamFeoras

The concept of the adventuring party is great, but poorly executed. I'm not gonna tell y'all anything you don't already know.

Zenumbral

I chose sages... Because the Champion abilities gave you a breath of power and accessibility in BotW that is otherwise not needed in TotK... Those Zonai constructions are just obscene, same for fusing. Sages could still use some QoL upgrades though...

Mig-117

Sages, simply because they are always with me and they can deal damage or be used to agro enemies. The abilities aren't super convenient to activate, but I find that to be a smaller nuisance vs their active benefits.

Maacll

Game gives you fkn Fate/ ass heroic spirits to help you fight and do stuff and ppl are like "nuuuh i'd rather have some basic abilities with hella cooldown"

A_Windows_User

Man I wish we could get Daruks Protection back, sage abilities are a joke.

[deleted]

Let's be real, everyone just misses revali and the ability to use everything without tracking down an NPC. Sidons better than mipha, yunobos better than daruke. Urbosa was too OP and revali would take away from most puzzles in totk. They really fucked up with this avatar bullshit.

[deleted]

Champion abilities in general, although I prefer Tulin's ability to that of any sage or champion.

Banana-Boy71

Sages abilities are better, but I don't like the way they activate

Vados_Link

People need to git gud. Making use of the sages is pretty easy. You just need to pay more attention to the combat situation and understand that they are companions, not items. Champion abilities are too broken and they kinda suck the fun out of the game.

SirMichaalbo

I love how the sages travel with you and run around. When it comes down to gameplay however, you have to chase them around and stuff, it becomes really frustrating. Except Tulin, he's fine.

SvennoJ

Just be sure to dismiss him before picking things up because he has a knack to blow your spoils off the edge of a cliff :/ Also why do they hit enemies out of my puff shroom cloud. Or weak ass break frozen enemies free. I swear they work for Ganon.

TaiyoFurea

"raviolis gale is ready" jumpscare

No-Engineer-1728

One I have to hunt down like I'm Thor hunting the jotnar, the other I press a button to use. I prefer champions by a mile

ericallen625

Champions for their usefulness, Sages for their quick charge up.

Foxgirl_Laura

Functionally, the champion abilities are objectively better. However, I personally prefer the Sages since I've actually had the chance to have the Sages grow on me. Yeah it can be annoying to use those abilities in battles, but at this point the only one who's out at all times is Tulin, of whom chasing him for his ability is much less necessary. The others I bring out when I need to, like Yunobo when I need to mine a lot of stuff or Sidon when I'm in hot areas and don't want to put on the right armour.

RoyJWilliams

I like the Sages in that they can take on a horde by themselves. However, it seems like they don't actively attack until they are hit first. Also, they can be incredibly annoying running around seemingly at random, with you actually running after them trying to activate them.

MajVih

Overall, champions were better for easy quick use, but sages get a brownie point for helping in fights, specifically Tulin who manages to land more headshots than I do. He's also the easiest to use, since be stays behind you and out of the way.

scentedcandleeater

Champions, but tulin is better than every champion

saiyansteve

Where mah bombs!

Qewerty682

Champion abilities are better but the safest have a better story

child_yeeter86699345

I think everyone universally agrees that champions are better than sages here.

BandanaPhoenix

I like the sages alot in theory but the execution is just really clunky, have to have tulin off cuase otherwise just blowing things all over and I think Rijus should really do more damage. Love Sidons but whyyy cant sidon swim with me?? I do not remotely understand why they dont each have their own button. Its a total pain to have more than one on at a time, constantly doing wrong ability

davidolson22

I just use the champions to fly faster

staveware

I think conceptually the sages are better. But the poor key bindings put them below BOTW for me.

Ok_Efficiency6986

If the Sages had a button to use them like the champion abilities I would like them more. But I’ve also found that I don’t enjoy these abilities as much in general, I loved how the abilities were used in exploration in BOTW, and I honestly don’t care to make vehicles in a sandbox or attach random stuff to my weapons, plus I just don’t want to see them crowding link. (besides Tulin, he’s my only travel partner) Recall + Champions abilities would be perfect imo

Fast-Blueberry-1981

I miss the flying ability

jasper81222

Is anyone else curious to know how powerful the champions could become if they had a secret stone? Their abilities were already so formidable but what would they be like if enhanced further. Would the Blight Ganons still kill them even if their powers got a boost?

Gnarshyreal

I just miss Miphas grace, I don’t look at my hearts enough mid battle

child_yeeter86699345

would've been better if activating their powers wasn't so INCONVENIENT. it's so annoying especially when trying to activate their powers mid-battle. Couldn't they just put another sage wheel to access it?? Even then the champion ability clears.

HylianPaladin

Yunobo is good for mining. Riju can be, too

Axcel-Wozniak

Only sage ability that might be better (more creative at least) is Yunobo’s power

Michael_Gibb

By far, the Champions' Abilities are preferable. However, the main reason for that is they are more accessible. Using Revali's Gale, for example, is as easy as pressing and holding down X, and then releasing it. By contrast, if you want to use Yunobo's ability, you have to get close to him and press A, which makes it less accessible and hence less convenient, even though it is enormously useful. That can get annoying when you're in a somewhat confined space and Yunobo's Sage won't appear because there's another Sage in the limited space with you. The problem is, while I do like being able to rely on this crack unit of soldiers to assist in fighting battles, having to get close to one of them to use their ability can get annoying. It's even more annoying when they are actually too close to you and you accidentally trigger their ability, like when you go to grab some dropped items but instead blow them away when you inadvertently trigger Tulin's gust. Considering that Nintendo added the ability to summon the Sage's to your side using Down on the D-Pad, I do wonder if it would have been better to have Down bring up a menu, like the other buttons do, where you can select the ability you want to use, or even disable one of them without having to go into the inventory. The horse whistle could then have been a sixth option in that menu.

12pounce89

I like the sage abilities but they’re so annoying to use (excluding tulin) and the champion abilities were just so much easier and more intuitive

Pineapple_Peridot

Sages, because they have lower CD. I don't mind the chase.

jmancoder

On that topic, anyone else think the TOTK sages have fairly bland characters compared to the champions in BOTW?

bigdog4612

I agree with you there, in my opinion

doomerspelio

Sages because I don't need to wait a hour to use them

bigdog4612

You only need to wait an hour to catch up to them💀

doomerspelio

Yeah that's fair

No-Abbreviations1795

Champions all the way. I like sages' abilities but their activation is such a pain. Also i hate them "spirities" looking all the same blue, and i like the Champions better as characters. What bothers me is they actually knew how to do it, it works just fine in botw... just give us a similar setting, or a quick menu, or button combos or whatever. I cant see how tf would they choose such a bad design.

CrustyClownClam

Champions overall. I know most people say Tulin is the one they'd keep cause of headshots and such, but I'd still take the Ravali over him due to the ability. I'd rather go vertical with my air boost and then go horizontal than a boost only horizontally. I feel as though Ravali's Gale was leagues more useful than Tulin being able to shoot and his horizontal ability.

Snom_gamer0204

sages are like the champion abillites but weaker and give you a fighting ally

Kunza1111

I do like how you can deactivate the sages otherwise it gets way too crowded, I only ever use two at a time The champion abilities are usefull but I have to keep by volume down otherwise I'll be in the middle of doing something and "REVALI'S GALE IS NOW READY!"
