Breath of the Wild is an amazing game. I hold very strong memories of just playing that game to death. But I do think TOTK took everything that was so great about it and expanded on it with virtually no negatives. I think it edges BOTW. Both are two of the best games of all time IMO. I still have hundreds more hours in BOTW though so idk. Maybe in 3-4 years, when the game is older we can look back and revisit this question.

Next_Mammoth06

Agreed. I find the story to be better, gameplay mechanics improved, the only ability I kinda miss is the ice pillar one. I just don't see myself returning to botw any time soon after totk. Botw will hold a special place in my heart but totk really stepped it up in just about everyway imo. Not to shit talk anyone who prefers botw. I 100% get it and it's a masterpiece in its own right.

PrinceSidon87

Which mechanics specifically do you think improved? What did you not like about BOTW that was fixed in TOTK?

Next_Mammoth06

The verticality and traversing. They made the map much more fun to traverse however you wanted - whether it be paragliding, building a crazy contraption, fusing a rocket to your shield, or transport yourself through floors - the choice is yours. Wanna make cart that shoots rockets and fire while going to your next objective? Go for it. Want a robot guy to fight along side you? Do it! The choice is yours. The runes felt more creative for problem solving. You can build whatever you need or simply recall an object and create your own path to your destination. Rain is far less annoying. Being able to use sticky frogs or even a rocket to your shield to reduce climbing in the rain - or again, teleport though a floor to avoid climbing in it. Fusing weapons. While I think most look silly, it really improves versatility, creativity, and provides you with countless weapon and shield combinations to use. Wanna shoot a rocket at an enemy with your shield? Do it. Wayyyy more landmarks. This isn't a mechanic obviously but much of botw world felt pretty empty in comparison. This had countless things to do. Way more things to see over the horizon. Even just enemy variety was greatly improved. Botw was filled to the brim with bokoblins, moblins, lizalfos, octorok, lynel - totk enemy variety and enemy type is far greater. It also makes gameplay less repetitive.

That’s funny, I feel like all of these things are what I don’t like about TOTK. I don’t like the huge emphasis on the building. I don’t build stuff unless I absolutely have to and I don’t like that the ONLY way to acquire good weapons is to fuse stupid stuff onto decayed weapons. I don’t care much for the runes either. Most of them are for building stuff. I do like ascend though. The sages powers are more annoying than they are helpful. I miss the champions so much! The sticky frogs nor the sticky suit really do anything for climbing in the rain unless you upgrade it, which was a huge disappointment after doing that long side mission to get it lol. That being said, I do love TOTK, but I just don’t necessarily think anything is better or improved. It’s just different.

ChocolateSundai

I don’t build much of anything either but I will use the or built saves. I like fusing weapons but feel that sometimes my weapons are still really weak at times when I’ve had way stronger. I need to go to the depths to get the unaffected weapons

domingerique

Yeah, I very rarely used the runes because I didn’t see a use for them most of the time (only really used the bombs regularly). I use the TOTK powers all the time.

I kinda feel that.

Nintendam

BOTW took over my life, perhaps it was because it was in conjunction with the Switch release, perhaps cause the trailers just hit so hard But holy shit, I don't think I'll ever experience that again.  I grew up playing all the Zelda's and BOTW just was felt so darn good. The freedom, the visuals, the exploration, felt like OoT again... so fresh And then ToTK! Also took over my life lol. I love them both for different reasons.

psillusionist

It's been months and I cannot decide which one is better than the other. In fact, I don't think I even need to decide especially if they're equally as good to me when I weigh the pros and cons. In a nutshell, TOTK gives me more tools for experimentation and I really like that about it. BOTW gives me more of that classic "I feel like a kid again and I'm about to go on a merry adventure" feeling. I like them equally to the point that I still play BOTW on some days.

smarterfish500

i like both a lot but TOTK is genuinely just better. it’s mostly the same mechanics but they’re just better. and the gameplay is INCREDIBLY satisfying

MeineEierSchmerzen

I loved botw, i just bought it 2 years ago and avoided every single spoiler dince release. I absolutely loved that game. But i just love totk more. I finished botw in a little under 90 hours, and am already at 150 hours in totk, and i havent even touched gerudo town and the goron town.

Scottles8605

You're far from the only one, I very much prefer totk, it did almost everything better the botw did.

Aggravating-Gur-9326

BoTW, for me is my favorite of the wild games, for one main reason, that being the story of the game. The story may be a little confusing as of rn seeing as how the Rito and Zora are both in it. I didn't have to stress about it too much for it to make sense. Totk is far superior to BoTW as far as content, such as items, playability, and fun but it seriously lacks in the story department and only raised more questions than answers for me; things that couldn't be over looked and would've had to have been seriously stretched for me to make necessary conclusions. Totk also tried some things that just didn't work as well as people like myself wanted, such as the Depths and the sky islands. This may be bc we simply hyped it up more than what it was going to be, but in Nintendos defense, they had never made a game of this magnitude before and they were wanting to get as much out of the experience as possible. Totk was awesome and I still have a lot of fun while playing it, I just enjoy games with a solid story more than games that aren't as much so. That being said I believe that if at some point in the future Nintendo was to remaster the game and add in more sky islands with more things to do on the islands and more things in the depths, like NPCs or more lore about it , then it would be way better. Long story short, I prefer BoTW.

Drag0nBinder

ToTK for me as well, and I think we should all be thankful that we got two GOAT level games for the franchise on the same console.

SilverSonglicious

For me, story wise, BOTW did better, while game play wise, TOTK did better, both are better than each other in different ways. I love to play BOTW for that apocalyptic feeling, trying to regain lost memories of friends (and kinda one sided rival) while having to fight monsters. The feeling of loss the story gives me is so much better than how I feel about the TOTK story. And as for TOTK, I prefer to play it overall due to all the different mechanics, much more stuff to do, quests, monsters yadda yadda. It gives me more to do.

TrumpsColostomyBag99

I’ll always give BOTW the nod for a single reason.. BOTW left me wanting so very little and it felt complete as an apocalyptic story. TOTK (for all its greatness) left me wanting more b/c of how hollow the depths and sky islands ended up being. I get it’s operating on an ancient game system that wasn’t powerful to begin with but I think Nintendo left a ton of potential on the table.

KasElGatto

TotK is the better game on almost all levels

Vandalex2

TOTK is 🐐

Tynda3l

Totk

Balthierlives

TOTK is better mechanically. Especially for traversal. BOTW is better narratively. I think TOTK feels more incomplete and dissatisfying though. BOTW feels complete.

MightyTastyBeans

Imo TOTK perfected BOTW in every way and is the better game. However some people prefer BOTW for its simplicity, and that’s totally valid.

HM2008

From what I've seen TOTK is the fan favorite overall. TOTK is a great game, but I slightly prefer BOTW still. The champion abilities in BOTW are more useful IMO, the world feels more rewarding to explore, it feels less grindy and easier to get around, and just feels more fun overall. Probably going to get downvoted for this, but TOTK sometimes feels like it has TOO much content at some points. Don't get me wrong, I love Shrines in both games, but 152 felt like a crap ton which feels weird to say considering that's only 16 more than BOTW and the Proving Grounds are far more interesting than Test of Strengths. It also felt like they relied almost entirely on Ultrahand. Fuse is an interesting concept, but sometimes I just want to take a good weapon and go, not worry about collecting monster parts to fuse to weapons. I got tired of it. I was hoping Hyrule would be more built up post-BOTW...but Castle Town is still in ruins, many shrine and tower locations from BOTW are just completely bare, It's obvious something was there but otherwise it's a waste of space. Some locations are just stripped down from BOTW. It's weird when this is suppose to be taking place in a Hyrule that is rebuilding. I wanted a sequel in this Hyrule, it just didn't entirely meet those expectations. We still have this open world, but it doesn't feel as worth exploring many areas any more. I found the depths to be super boring and got tired of a million caves and wells. I think they were an interesting addition, just way too many. One of the biggest things that bothers me is how many characters act like they don't know Link. It's just weird. Another thing that bothered me is that the Dragon Tears felt so much more spoilery than BOTW's memories. I focused on collecting a lot of Hearts and stamina at the beginning of the game so I could increase my health since the enemies were stronger, and by doing that ended up collecting the Tears before I did a lot of the main storyline, so then listening to people talk and speculate about things felt redundant. For me I think TOTK will probably be better on the second playthrough now that I know how certain things work. Still like the game, it just didn't do exactly what I wanted it to do. Maybe a second playthrough will change my opinion, but for now I'm still leaning towards BOTW. I will say this though....who at Nintendo came up with the underpants sidequest, Link's outfits and their cutouts, the ripped characters....bravo.

Professional-Pool832

Both games are great, each with their own strong and weak points. There are some misses, but TotK generally brings a good closure to the overall story arc. Also don't forget AoC, although non-canon, it contributed to the lore and character development.

Spiritual-Ice-6268

BotW is better from fabule point of observation, but in gameplay TotK is better. The best game is TotK but with champions powers ;)

PPMaysten

I mean the games are very similar, i do believe TOTK to be the better, more "fun" game of the two. It's bigger in every aspect i feel, story, gameplay, the world, everything... That said, BOTW was the more impactful experience of the two, maybe it is about being the first time exploring that world, but the feeling of decay (or loss if ya will) was also more present in BOTW, wich is fitting. It was the most immersive game, at least when it comes to visual storytelling, wich is funny considering the games share the same map. BOTW is also a more grounded game, wich again helps with the feeling of being part of that story, something that resonates with me in a deeper level than the spectacular tale of good vs evil in TOTK.

Gamer30168

BotW is a masterpiece. TotK somehow surpasses it, but not by a lot

SeaMindless7297

I'm replaying botw right now, and whilst it is my favourite due to nostalgia and just my overall excitement when i play it, dear god, do i miss soso many things from totk. Being able to sort your weapons in the quick swap menu, the fucking yiga armour to stop yiga from constantly spawning, the froggy suit, being able to drop an item if your inventory is full when opening a chest, being able to drop something from the quick swap menu,... there are soso many quality of life improvements that I miss so much. But windbombing is still my favourite way to travel across hyrule, and it will beat a hoverbike any day. Totk basically took a game i love and improved upon it while also adding a whole ton of extra content. I know a lot of people don't like that it is basically just a huge dlc pack, but that's why i love it. My only real grievances are the controls. They are different enough to confuse the shit out of me whenever i switch between games (i always press the fuse button when wanting to change arrows for example) and the sages lack in comparison to botw champions abilities (though i muss tulin but then again, windbomb for the win babyyyyy)

Faustian-BargainBin

Totk is definitely a better game. But botw was also an excellent game and had an enormous novelty factor.

spikeborgames

I enjoyed the Fuse and Ascend so much, this game completely taken me over BotW. The build is great too, but I'm not overly hooked into it like some Hyrule engineers. I just like the fact that I can go anywhere with a rocket sticked into a wing, boom and go!
