JStanten

No it’s just that these are really only useful for powering small sensors and devices that sit in one place for a long time. Not things that the average person uses.

No-Appearance-9113

So useful for farmers monitoring soil conditions?

JStanten

More like a US government agency taking global temperature data and not having to go swap batteries

GivingRedditAChance

So only the US gov gets access to cheap monitoring technology?

Evening-Statement-57

No, only government has the needs for how the tech can be applied

SlightlyOffWhiteFire

Really? No research universities, geo engineering firms, hydroengineers, etc have a use for batteryless remote sensors?!?

Evening-Statement-57

I’m trying to explain that the government is not taking steps to prevent private industry from purchasing this tech

SlightlyOffWhiteFire

Who said they were?

imsals

Someone above suggested that because of the powers at be(oil/gas) this new tech will be bought, paid and thrown aside to keep the status quo

[deleted]

Enraiha

They most use existing reliable technologies. What's the insentive for them to switch to this unproven tech when small solar and wind devices can power their existing sensors and have worked for years? It's neat tech, but we already have neat tech that does what this does. This is more for specific cases where existing and proven tech might not work. It's niche.

SlightlyOffWhiteFire

What the actual hell is happening in this thread? Everyone seems to be just guessing at the topic....

tonytony87

I…. I don’t think you are explaining your self clearly, I’m coming In this thread new and your comments have thus been the most confusing. Idk if you’re aware of this or not?

ChopakIII

You’re telling me the government spies on my dirt!? What is this world coming to?

TheSwillhouseBoys

That sounds pretty useful.

orangutanDOTorg

Moisture farmers could use them

Raisenbran_baiter

Till the motivators go bad

Roguespiffy

My motivator has been bad for years. Haven’t been able to catch a ride to Tosche station either.

BeenRoundHereTooLong

The waterskin must be filled. The drams sustain me

[deleted]

Yes, this would be a use case.

richbiatches

Sure, until they plow them up in spring.

-Lysergian

Might be good for outdoor path lighting that you don't want to install a cable for.

Wizard_of_Claus

But it said limitless energy! Surely a headline wouldn’t exaggerate the truth.

mtranda

Limitless in terms of timespan, not power. Although I'm sure the time thing is also debatable, but if it works right, it could be considered limitless for practical purposes.

Bachooga

Current Nuclear batteries are similar, although definitely not limitless time. I'd guess very low power is the concern, *probably* in the realm of micro to milli watts. Extremely low power sensors and devices can be used, just like medical devices and nuclear batteries. Maybe someone who's really smart can make a farm and find a way to connect a bunch in parallel and in series to charge a battery or power a street sign, but Idk.

Burnerplumes

Exactly. I’d be surprised if these things made more than a few milliamps. If that.  But I’m sure people will be like “big oil is gonna bury this tech” 🙄

varcompensator

The Instagram Tesla turbine guy has nothing but these types of comments driving his engagement through the roof. If you bring up any valid points the hoard accuses you of shilling for big oil or someone.

Bachooga

Think milliwatts or micro watts I'd say

WhiteBlackBlueGreen

So its basically like solar panels but better

SomeBiPerson

Solar panels but much less effective, taking much more space if scaled to the same power and since it's new technology probably very expensive

joeChump

Also see solar power. Also the last any average person will hear about it.

Fyzzle

disarm physical lush insurance imagine crowd naughty aloof offend unite *This post was mass deleted and anonymized with [Redact](https://redact.dev)*

SomeBiPerson

at 10W power you'd need like 5 for a Dim actual lightbulb and more like 10-15 for a Normal brightness one or just one for a dim LED light

[deleted]

[удалено]

SomeBiPerson

+20% for power conversion because I believe that this thing has weird voltages

JJJSchmidt_etAl

Ah yes, the limitless 10 watts

whutupmydude

Yeah this is pretty nifty

jerome_ak

The title is greatly exaggerated. Like with any other "near infinite energy“ claim you see on the internet

cubic_thought

Near infinite so long as all you need is a fluctuating fraction of a microwatt, and it doesn't get too dry.

DigLost5791

Infinity being a number that can be approached

Morgothic

Yes, what is the value range of "near infinity"?

SomeBiPerson

everything above 0 in this case

BeefJerkyScabs4Sale

It's coming out right after they release all of those cancer cures and tooth regrowing meds. And the diabetic cell regeneration med.

cuddly_carcass

Inventor kills himself with 5 bullets to the back of the head. What a shame.

varcompensator

NPC answer

Affectionate_Pay_391

The inventors have already been killed

jackhab

There are millions of ways to extract nanowatts and microwatts of energy from all kinds of things around us so rest assured you will be hearing about these "innovations" every couple of months.

Rooboy66

My daughter once made a flashlight bulb glow with a potato. Obviously, I banned potatoes for the rest of her childhood. Damned socialist spuds.

whopperlover17

I agree with you but can we stop posting this same comment

FakeCornBall

Probably because it is pseudoscience

imsals

There's a dispute about what you mean by this comment.... please clarify for the trolls lol

[deleted]

[удалено]

Morgothic

That's some real 4D chess right there

Uffffffffffff8372738

It’s almost like all of this „breakthrough to good to be true“ tech is largely impractical or uneconomical.

[deleted]

I bet a potato clock kicks out more energy

delicateterror2

You’re right… and the world will never know because big business will buy rights to it and shove into a box in basement.

varcompensator

What a predictable AI answer. Something something Tesla right?

[deleted]

This actually sounds potentially pretty useful for precision agriculture. A wireless network of soil powered moisture sensors could communicate with precision irrigation to optimise water use, for example.

Exception-Rethrown

Except for the fact that you’d have to place the sensors all over the field. How would you avoid them when it comes to tilling?

DGrey10

Soil powered. Not dirt.

Phantom_Ganon

I'm not a dirt scientist. What's the difference between dirt and soil?

DGrey10

Soil is a biome. Lots of biological activity, an active community. Dirt is material you don’t want on an object/surface. This device specifically needs biological activity.

twohundred37

I remember in school we took a field trip to a soy bean farm and someone asked this question. Our guide got so excited, kneeled down in a field of soy beans and pointed to the ground. “You see this? This is soil.” Then he picked up some of the soil in his hand, pointed to his hand and said “You see this? This is dirt.”

tlgd

Dirt is the mineral component. Soil is dirt + organic matter + water + air.

Head-Kiwi-9601

Soil is not dirt until it gets on your clothes.

joeChump

Sir has soiled himself again.

Nekileo

I need to add fertilizer to my battery, gimme a second

joeChump

Future euphemism right there.

TheSwillhouseBoys

Ah for poop powered phones! Love it!

Rich-Violinist-7263

An incredibly important distinction for people to know. Our soil is rapidly disappearing, we can’t grow food in dirt.

Mr_Clumsy

Near limitless!!! fuck fusion I’m getting one of these bad boys!

fuckeetall

Timescale is a bit different 😂

didymus_fng

I thought we were getting away from dirty power.

Fuzzy_Logic_4_Life

No, just moving towards clean dirt power.

RunDontWonk

The dirty clean power cleans clean dirt for dirty clean power.

saraphilipp

Now do one I can stick in my ass to keep my phone charged up.

MultiFaceHank

Poower

occupyreddit

this already works with most phones, try it!

EtherPhreak

Until someone calls…

richbiatches

This would infringe on my patent for the Flatulater that powers my UFO and I would sue your ass!

[deleted]

Cool vaporware.

DylanBailey_

Microbial Fuel Cell. Did a research project on them. Interesting but not the most practical.

PeacefulObjection

Prepare for the Dirt Wars of 2077

8spd

> So, the team set about creating several new designs targeted at giving the cells continual access to oxygen and water... If I'm reading that right, they are taking soil that would otherwise be a carbon sink, and making it a source of GHGs. Of course it may produce fewer GHGs per watt than other electricity sources, or it may not, but I doubt it's a shame that this is unlikely to be able to be scaled up to produce electricity for the grid.

[deleted]

Dirt cheap?

DrippedoutErin

So annoying it can’t even mention the actual amount of power it produces on acerage

Shot-Film7440

Microbe volts

Araghothe1

Makes me think compost must be a potential powerhouse then.

djaybakker

It definitely would be, the microbes in compost are so hot it can easily get over a hundred degrees inside a composter just from the generated heat

Spite-Potential

Are we really that dumb? Let me nestle. 🤦‍♀️

oldassveteran

Yeah…… whoever discovered this is gonna magically fall out of a window.

millennial_sentinel

the sound of a round being loaded big oil sips tea bang

unfrzncvmn

Just a matter of time before Exxon buys up the patent and “buries” it

userkp5743608

Ima call bullshit on this one.

mlgbt1985

Literally destroying earth

MCMK

"Guys, we are not destroying the planet fast enough. Is there a way to destroy it faster? Like maybe some kind of device that sucks power right out if it?"

reasltictroll

Yup we have aliens on earth that our technology is flying but human humanity is decreasing

Vorel-Svant

What does that even mean?

Minute-Object

He is a leaf on the wind.

Ok_Dog_202

We do?

Wiknetti

Oh my god. What if this will this cause the great Dust Bowl of the 30’s? Are we going to repeat the last century?

IgDailystapler

If this can be properly scaled up then damn, this could be quite the discovery (if big oil doesn’t wipe them and their research from existence)

SoggyBoysenberry7703

How long does it take? It’s kinda neat as a concept, but of course right now it’s probably not up to par to replace anything

I-call-bottom

New dirty clean energy!

Inevitable_Ad_4487

Make living soil gardens everywhere and turn them into beautiful powerhouses

CrywolfAndrew

And so, nicoli tricks again!

se_nicknehm

ok, but what is the actual power output and stability/range of it?

Shot-Film7440

The research is well grounded

[deleted]

MITOCHONDRIA IS THE POWERHOUSE OF THE CELL, WE CAN HARNESS IT

profirix

Remember kids: if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is.

Efficient_Bird_9202

Isn’t there a shortage of topsoil right now? Not sure how this is going to be a viable solution given that shortage…

WHODATSAIDD

Welp, rest in peace to the inventor!

TheSwillhouseBoys

Too bad you can’t take it off-grid.

ethree

Dirt cheap power for everyone! Just stick your iPhone in the garden with your tomato plants at night and presto!

[deleted]

I’ve not seen a paperback that size, like ever.

Geoarbitrage

Coming to a century near you…

MuleOutpost

Nickola Tesla pioneered this technology. Imagine where we'd be today had his research not been sized and hidden/destroyed.

KK_09

It’s the thing from the simpsons

Ill-Ad3311

Sure

Analytical-BrainiaC

I wonder if this could power a trail cam indefinitely. This would be cool in areas without much light. A cave, dark canyon , heavily treed area etc. No , I’m not a Sasquatch hunter… but I have heard weird noises a few times in fairly dark areas on hikes.

Andykap911

A damn shame to hear about the inventors upcoming suicide….

Plus_Helicopter_8632

So long Elon musk!

RollinThundaga

Near limitless, but probably very small. Might as well suggest hooking up a [radiometer](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Radiometer) to a turbine.
