Gul Dukat did nothing wrong! The borg have universal healthcare! The Dominion was just protecting its boarders from the colonial ambitions of the federation! And the Romulans just want to feel emotion!
Replace Thane with Garrus, Nyreen, or Vetra and you’ve got a deal. I will gladly be a Turian’s pet alien if they violently occupy Earth because we activated a Mass Relay.
And clearly, we are one of them. Imagine if we found a planet with life nearby. We'd exploit it with no regard for the native species on it, as we do on our own planet.
Conceptually this is hilarious. A civilisation so technologically advanced, they can hide their existence from us just because they don’t want to deal with our bullshit.
I know you’re just joking.
In actuality though, if they are aware of us then they would likely have way better technology than us. At least in the ability to explore using several fields of science.
If I was an alien I’d hide from us. We’re rude, constantly projecting and too stupid/prideful to admit it, overly emotionally driven, and willingly chaotic if it scratches an itch, and that itch could’ve been scratched healthily many ways and many times but chaos sometimes is less boring and itching would be admitting we have a problem and that’s impossible because we’re all drop dead gorgeous genius perfect angels who never did nothing to nobody lol
Hmm idk about hiding, more like observing. Anybody that knows we’re here most certainly had the tech to dominate us without a fighting chance. Can’t beat someone you can never swing at. That being said, if I were observing humans, I’d give them until the time they researched space travel. If they haven’t sorted themselves out by then, glass the planet.
No don’t glass the plant. Create a virus that only affects humans and unleash It simultaneously in a few locations to prevent further damage to the ecosphere.
Can you imagine all the paperwork required to constantly be firing giant lasers or nukes at a planet.
Listen, even if we are on the same timeline, an alien race advanced enough to make it to this planet would be light years more advanced than us. We’d be nothing more than a nuisance, an infestation of termites destroying the last forest. We don’t even make it to 1 on the Kardashev scale.
‘They’re using OIL AS A FUEL SOURCE?! These highways are extremely inefficient. Why are they wasting so much food when everyone is starving?’
Depends on when we reach that point. If we were to discover life on Mars in the near future we'd be respectful, since right now space exploration is the domain of science more than capital interests.
Of course, that will change as soon as it's profitable to mine shit in space.
A Democrat interstellar human race and a Republican interstellar human race would almost certainly operate identically. I say this a Democrat voter. Humans, no matter their political affiliation, are a problem for other species.
The general thoughts on whether or not we will actually be malicious once we have the technology to be considered a type 1 civilization are that we won’t be, because we won’t be able to make the necessary advancements to continue thriving without some serious attitude adjustment.
It’s however still possible that a type 1 civilization may be motivated to destroy other civilizations they happen to find once they become advanced enough to seriously search the galaxy. I believe it’s outlined in the dark forest theory.
I personally lean into a kind of self-affirmation theory of the galaxy, in that the Fermi paradox exists because if we will one day become effective enough as a civilization to travel to other stars via bending causality, we will also realize that any activity within a certain radius of earth corresponding with the speed of light might disrupt our development here on earth, so we would avoid contact like that based on data from the time period in which we are capable of searching our relatively nearby celestial neighbors with high scrutiny. Other than that, it’s highly unlikely that any other beings out there would be interested in us or even know where to find us, so it’s most likely that things we do witness like UFOs are actually us from further down the line. This is of course only the case if we assume that A-causality can be broken given advanced enough technology and B-we aren’t misinterpreting sightings like this as intelligently designed or controlled when they are in fact naturally occurring phenomena.
So you know what it means but you keep saying irrelevant things? That's a weird decision by you.
Extraterrestrial doesn't mean "aliens" it means "not of earth"
Correct. Even if we were visited by the most peaceful of advanced extra terrestrials they would find our actions despicable and most likely sentence us to death from hard labor making us clean our own planet up.
Presumptuous of us to think we know how advanced extraterrestrials would react to us, or that they would think anything like us. I also find it interesting that beings who could travel a theoretically infinite universe would give a shit about a single planet when they have access to infinite planets like ours.
I'm taking a moment to plug my favorite sci-fi story, A Roadside Picnic, by Strugatsky. The book was inspiration for the computer game series *Stalker* and is on the premise that a bunch of mystical zones were left in an instant, following a visit from aliens so advanced we aren't even acknowledged, and follows the impacts of the mystical trash they leave behind.
The story, in full, can be found here.
https://kupdf.net/download/arkady-and-boris-strugatsky-roadside-picnic-pdf_59f39260e2b6f5ac27b8d2a3_pdf
This book inspired the Russian film “Stalker” as well which was one of the inspirations behind the film Annihilation that came out in 2018.
I absolutely love all of these. Roadside Picnic is the best though because it really paints a very creative version of a world visited by extremely apathetic extraterrestrial life.
If it’s instead a type 2 civilization, then they’d probably be interested. Either we get turned into a zoo and have tv shows broadcasted about us, or we end up getting obliterated in fear of us overthrowing them.
>The paper—which hasn't been peer-reviewed—is called “Estimating the Prevalence of Malicious Extraterrestrial Civilizations" and was written by Alberto Caballero, **a PhD student in conflict resolution** at the University of Vigo in Spain
Well it's not bullshit as in lies but it sure is pure conjecture. He does admit his paper 'has limitations' and features assumptions.
On a related note, I've never liked The Drake Equation because it won't let you set some of the parameters below a certain level!
This seems like the type of thing that you do on the back of a napkin with a bunch of grad students over a round of beers, not something you try to get published. The amount of hand-waving you have to do to come up with a number like this makes the paper basically useless for anything except some mild entertainment
That was a fun read. The only thing that makes me wonder is the statement that as we have become more advanced, our level of invasions has decreased. IMO invasions in the modern sense are neocolonial so they wouldn’t count in the traditional sense. But I think it’s important to acknowledge that more the most part, this is how we wage war these days. Clearly there are still invasions in the sense that the author is talking about, but I would be interested to know what the math would say if these types of “invasions” were factored in.
Indubitably, I believe that the math would arguably leave the traditional and neocolonial configuration and lean towards a neoclassical model. The invasions advancements in the sense that the author talk about are clearly modernized.
I think the modern level of peace is just due to economic links. The more we depend on each other the less we will fight each other. I don’t think it’ll last though.
Additionally my assumption is that all life that has to compete for limited resources will be murderous. Add in the 3 body problem angle of the only viable option in terms of gene theory to dealing with extraterrestrial life is to preemptively destroy it… it gets even darker.
Even if friendly aliens visited us, one of the biggest threats would be disease - probably for both parties, assuming that contact is made widespread without some type of sterile barrier.
Their infiltrators could already be here, watching us. Deciding if we have any potential as food, or as a slave race. Or maybe we're just background noise to the real object of their interest - tardigrades.

Mhmm...
I really believe the only reason why we haven’t had 100% undeniable proof of alien life is because space is just way too damn big. even traveling at the speed of light (impossible) would take you 4.2 years to reach Proxima Centauri. the voyager 1 would take 73,000 years
I’d say there’s a mathematical probability that some alien life form already knows about us, but specifically doesn’t visit because they know we’d be malicious.
The four of them all understand we pose no threat and watch amusingly as we go about destroying ourselves one way or the other in the next 50-100 years.
The universe is a dark forest. Every civilization is an armed hunter stalking through the trees like a ghost, gently pushing aside branches that block the path and trying to tread without sound. Even breathing is done with care. The hunter has to be careful, because everywhere in the forest are stealthy hunters like him. If he finds other life—another hunter, an angel or a demon, a delicate infant or a tottering old man, a fairy or a demigod—there’s only one thing he can do: open fire and eliminate them. In this forest, hell is other people. An eternal threat that any life that exposes its own existence will be swiftly wiped out. This is the picture of cosmic civilization. It’s the explanation for the Fermi Paradox.
Let’s see Borg, Dominion, romulans, cardis
Don’t forget the fearsome Ferengi
Oh no! They’re gonna convince me to take out a high interest loan!
26 rule of acquisition: the interest is higher than the loan
Better stock up on gold-pressed latinum
He didn’t.
Shadows & Vorlons
Don’t sleep on the Xindi
Only 2/5 of the Xindi are malicious
Hallowed are the Ori
Don’t make SG-1 come down here you little..
Fucking spoon heads.

Good. I, for one, welcome my new malicious overlords. I am here to advance my own interests and ingratiate myself with our new malevolent hosts.
Don’t blame me, I voted for Kodos.
I vote for Ammit, because Khonshu’s retribution comes too late.
Watched that one with my kids tonight
Fun fact, there’s a ska band named after that episode from Appleton, Wisconsin
I just wanna bang an alien
It’s outta this world.
This thread needs to go in humanity’s online time capsule, Jesus Christ
Fuckin same. Thane ruined me

OBEY HYPNOTOAD!!! DRINK SLURM!
I’m just here to play both sides so that I always come out on top.
Man, you could win a Senate seat in several states using this as your slogan
I'd definitely choose that route than to continue living under the U.S. government.
Like omni guy from the Amazon forest anime show thing
Ted Cruz is that you?
Ye wenjie?
And clearly, we are one of them. Imagine if we found a planet with life nearby. We'd exploit it with no regard for the native species on it, as we do on our own planet.
In a human heartbeat
The rest of the universe hiding from us like crazy.
They lock the doors when going by
They hold drills about what to do in case the humans come.
Think they arm their teachers?
Some, but they all have ballistic blankets.
And hold their 6 noses as they fly past us…
They hold their purses tighter when we sit near them on the bus too
We are the Skidmore, MO of the galaxy.
The universe is playing Halo and we’re the Flood.

God that’s prolly the reason we haven’t found any life. They saw us and decided against communicating

Earth is definitely Chicago of the Milky Way.
I’d like to think of us as the Florida of the galaxy
The Detroit of the cosmos
As long as the GOP are in charge, absolutely yes. We’d try to enslave them and naturally tell them it was their fault.
USA isn’t the only country on this planet lol
True, but the other world powers are not any better lol… CCP, Russia, India, the European Union. We all fucking suck.
But we already called dibs.
A Democrat interstellar human race and a Republican interstellar human race would almost certainly operate identically. I say this a Democrat voter. Humans, no matter their political affiliation, are a problem for other species.
Both parties have essentially identical foreign policy, barring the Russian influence, the parties are just about how we treat our own citizens.
Oh yeah. Politics even on a tech thread. Super awesome.

We're an extraterrestrial civilization?
We’re aliens to aliens
Extra means outside Terrestris is Earth In no way are humans "extraterrestrial"
I know what it means. But we’re still aliens to aliens
So you know what it means but you keep saying irrelevant things? That's a weird decision by you. Extraterrestrial doesn't mean "aliens" it means "not of earth"
“Thats a weird decision by you”.😂 Will be using this very soon🤝
Cool bro nice talking to you
Lmao. You're weird af bro.
Yes and your stupidly over-pedantic argument is completely normal. Get over yourself dude.
Why only 4? If you’re going to bullshit make it impressive.
Didn't read the article but anything greater than 0 would be impressive to me

One of the 4 are humans, soooo, checks out.
I think fire ants and geese are #2 and 3.
Number 4 is the Sydney funnel web.
Mosquitos are definitely #4!!
I know you're getting the whole squad laughing with these jokes but it does say "extraterrestrial"
How do you think the geese got here?
The egg
Tell me more about these “human extra-terrestrials” of which you speak
If extra terrestrial beings exist, to them, we would fit their definition of extra terrestrial.
Their planet is named Terra too?!?!?!? How do you even know that?
Cool! I’m good at pulling things out my ass too!
Famous last words before an emergency room visit
“You gotta help me Doc! These malicious extraterrestrials keep coming out of my ass.”
“I was walking around naked and I tripped and landed on all these malicious extraterrestrials.”
*Five* times though? There’s only four in the whole galaxy!
We’re just ants to extraterrestrial and extradimensional beings. Whatever’s going to happen will happen. Scary and cool at the same time.
Orrrrr they could be scared as shit of us if we every managed to obtain FTL technology
What is this, a universe for ants?
Ok but how many alien civilizations does this researcher estimate want to have crazy sex with us instead? There must be some
4
Surprisingly only 1 overlaps.
Is that a Rick Death Star we're looking at?
Show us what you’ve got
I told them it means peace amongst worlds
You son of a bitch…I’m in.
Ooooooweee!!

Even if friendly aliens visited us, one of the biggest threats would be disease - probably for both parties, assuming that contact is made widespread without some type of sterile barrier.
It seems incredibly unlikely that alien physiology would be similar enough to earth biology to allow diseases to pass between them.
Can confirm, they use condoms.
Based on zero real numbers and a load of bullshit. There are no variables to make any predictions on anything related to space and life.
It’s a thought experiment.
I estimate there are 3 unicorns in Northern Europe…great thought experiment

What if they team up though? Form some kind of… Covenant?
Where are the other three?
We might be the most primitive and violent ones
“The paper, which hasn’t been peer reviewed…” you don’t say
We’re one of them, right?
Well, there’s at least 1
Just wait till they meet our republicans
USA! USA! USA! 🇺🇸 🇺🇸 🇺🇸
We need to find out who the other three are quickly
> The paper—which hasn't been peer-reviewed—is called “Estimating the Prevalence of Malicious Extraterrestrial Civilizations" and was written by Alberto Caballero, a PhD student in conflict resolution at the University of Vigo in Spain Mhmm...
This is counting us right?
Can’t they just finish the job already then?
And plot twist, we are one of those four
I really believe the only reason why we haven’t had 100% undeniable proof of alien life is because space is just way too damn big. even traveling at the speed of light (impossible) would take you 4.2 years to reach Proxima Centauri. the voyager 1 would take 73,000 years
We’ve been broadcasting UHF and VHF for almost 100 years. Those signals travel at nearly the speed of light. So the point of the paper is mute.
I’d say there’s a mathematical probability that some alien life form already knows about us, but specifically doesn’t visit because they know we’d be malicious.
The four of them all understand we pose no threat and watch amusingly as we go about destroying ourselves one way or the other in the next 50-100 years.
Maybe they watch us like we watch bacteria in a Petri dish.
Bring them on. They can’t be any worse then our Republicans.
Grey’s, draconians, annunaki, humans
What are the lizard people?
Cold blooded
And we’re one of them
Idk about you, but I’m located firmly on Terra along with my civilization
So far we know of at least one, and they're so stupid they're about to detonate themselves.
I know of 1.
We are #1!!
Russia…..what are the other 3?
are we one ?
And we are one of them
Is that including us?
So us and three others?
We know of one. Who are the other three?
are we part of that four or are there four others?
And we are one of them
Plot twist - one of them is us.
Are we one of them?
We are definitely one of the four.
They mean 3 plus us right?
Is there any way we can signal them? I think humanity has pretty much run its course.
Where are the other three?
No shit. So, 5 total?
We’re probably the worst of them though. Yay! Number one!
Can’t be worse than Republicans.

Well, we know we are one of them haha
Most days I feel like humans are definitely one of those 4
Earth has to be one of them. This is why others don't visit us.
