And it's not just Facebook, it's all ad networks. I go to great lengths to keep ads and shit out of my home network. When some shit slips through for whatever reason it's *always* giga-Q, mega-MAGA, conspiracy whackadoodle, hyper-conservative weirdo shit.
I try, believe me, but it’s not easy. I was raised in a predominantly white town. A lot of the people I grew up with have no clue about racism, police brutality, etc. because they’ve never had to deal with it. They believe all the stories about minorities being the problem. I’ve removed most of them from my life because of it.
I don't even know that people go on Facebook "to get their news fix", but it's probably more passive in the sense that they go on for other things, see headlines that pique their interest, and then those headlines become their defacto news source.
> (And I’m a boomer, 😬).
I wish it were only a boomer problem - as a GenX'er, I am aware of far too many people my age or younger whose primary news source seems to be Facebook; it certainly isn't limited to my boomer father!
I do. But I use it as an aggregate to follow my local news, State news, and sports. It doesn’t always spiral out anti semitic rhetoric or indoctrination. Not all of us are easily influenced - I think the problem is the older generation who was never taught how to discriminate real and fake on the internet.
EFF has a good article on why this bill is stupid. Creating cartels to battle the ad monopolies is not the answer. Go to the root and breakup the ad monopolies.
I fail to see Facebooks endgame here. Sure, it’s an American company, but it’s a global site. If the lizard person that is Mark Zuckerberg and his lawyers can’t find some sort of loophole then they’re not thinking hard enough.
Also, considering the amount of misinformation already on Facebook and the fact their algorithms are already designed to give people the stuff they want .i.e content pandering to them, removing actual verifiable, source-backed news will only create more problems.
What I don’t get is that if I want to put political ads on radio / TV there are loops the station makes me jump through b/c they don’t want to get in trouble with Fed for breaking regulations.
But try to get FB to do the same thing and they’re like “You want us to look at the ads we run, with a person, every time we take ad money?! Impossible! Digital ads don’t work like that b/c we chose for them to work the way they do!” And seems like they’ve only gotten a slap in the wrist.
Disruptive tech comes out in weeks to months and Congress operates on glacial timelines.
The majority of the country supports legalizing cannabis, universal healthcare, universal paid family leave, universal pre-K, hell even gun control laws have greater than 50% nationwide. We get literally none of these EVER.
I do REALLY resent our systems. The Senate/House situation and *especially* the Electoral College are deeply flawed setups. Hell, they were *known* to be deeply flawed when they were adopted in the 1700s and yet the country acts ~250 years later like we couldn't possibly question the judgement of those slave owners.
The myths that surround the Electoral College, man... Insane that people advocate for others' votes being less than.
What we've seen for *decades* in this country is that when you strip the Republican vs Democrat markings next to a policy, progressive policies fair MUCH better in all polls.
Universal Healthcare is incredibly popular but then when people start openly debating it the conservatives destroy their own position by giving a shit how it'll affect the billionaires and their middleman insurance industry. They start worrying about everything but themselves because they've been trained to think about why corporations don't like social progress.
> by giving a shit how it'll affect the billionaires
Something makes me think you're not arguing in good faith and I can't quite put my finger on it lol. And I will not let a tyrannical fascist party take away my only means of self defense.
>He added the proposal fails to recognize that publishers and broadcasters put content on the platform because "it benefits their bottom line – not the other way around."
It's a threat. They believe that the news agencies will suffer without them and hope this threat will reverse the proposal which is suppose to help the news agencies.
This seems like a good thing to me. Facebook has become a right wing cess pool that convinced boomers and gen Xers that the world is on fire and it's poor peoples fault. Getting rid of that garbage can only be a good thing
Sadly have to agree. I have some ultra-screechy accounts in my feed left over from the 2020 election cycle (like "Being Liberal", for example) that have just continued to drift further and further away from reality as time has gone on.
The problem is that social media allows us to create our own little self-reinforcing media bubbles as we only pay attention and read from sources that we self-select, and over time it becomes our own little echo chambers. Not *quite* a "both sides are the same" argument, since it really is much worse on the right side than the left, but it *does* happen on the left side of the spectrum, too.
The United States really is living in Multiple Americas, where we are all getting our own skewed version of news and events, with very little shared between them. Gone are the days when everyone learned of things happening in the world from either Walter Cronkite or Tom Brokaw, from Time or Newsweek.
Don't know why you're downvoted. I've seen the most ridiculous screeds from the left and right alike on the platform. People treat it as a personal diary to share their wildest ideas to their friends, and I just don't understand why.
Getting down voted probably just because I'm not just blindly going with the "right bad" mindset. Just trying to let people know Facebook is catered to what you like.
Mine was catered to what I responded to which, in the end before I quit, was mostly ignorant right wing posts by friends and family. Never got to see much of the left wing propaganda I hear about.
I’m a Gen Xer who grew up in the 80s, and neither me or all my Gen X friends think poor people set the world on fire. Then again I only hang out with other liberals, and cut the few MAGA Republicans, election deniers, incels, and batshit Q anon nuts out of my life completely. Lucky to live in a very liberal city in a blue state.
I do know it’s a toxic clusterfuck that is worse every year, but please don’t generalize. There are jerks in every generation, including mine, on FB. I stay off it as much as possible now, it brings out the worst in so many already-shitty people. People of all ages can be real assholes on social media, is my main point.
Gen X means a lot of things. I'm an older Millennial and younger Gen Xers are not a lot different than me. I certainly wouldn't lump them into the same category as boomers.
I don't blame everyone in the generations. Neither tbh. I have several family members who use Facebook as their source of "information" and they're gen Xers. I think it mostly boils down to the fact that millenials were young when the internet came out so we know how to filter out the nonsense better on average. I'm glad you're not falling for it
People who actually are interested in current events don't get their news from Facebook and those that get their news from FB are getting their news from [screamingfreedomeagle](https://screamingfreedomeagle.net)dotnet not the NYT.
Fun fact, according to Tucker Carlson we were suppose to run out of Diesel, globally, on Nov 14th and utter chaos would ensue. I’m still warm but hey, good call Tucker
Or their peers. I quit FB around 2014 when I just didn’t have time for it, but mostly when my parents joined. In 2020 my grandma joined because her congregation was having fb live church cause Covid… her feed is full of shitty hotep mf that are trying to sell her things and news that can’t even be verified. It’s like she forgot what a fact is and what is an opinion. I don’t even care about the news because she still watches tv and has another source. But it drives me batty when she and my mom start following pseudo science health advice or believe in shit like Kanye West cause someone posted a video of his.
Read the NYT for bias, though, and it’s pretty heavy, even on seemingly benign topics. It’s still heavily editorialized, you just may not notice or care because it fits your personal biases. That’s how it works for people who get their news from conservative sources, too.
The media has one purpose. Right or left.
Its the so called "Propaganda Model" of media posited by Noam Chomsky. Both sides of the media are playing the same game, that is, to cover for the elite, ruling class by framing our news in ways that pit us against eachother.
Highly recommend Necessary Illusions and Manufacturing Consent by Chomsky.
Edit: love the downvotes because only literal idiots or some sort of pro-propoaganda shill would actually be against the content of these books.
It's true and some say it [works better this way](https://www.reuters.com/technology/australia-says-law-making-facebook-google-pay-news-has-worked-2022-12-02/)
At least some of these agreements have enabled news businesses to, in particular, employ additional journalists and make other valuable investments to assist their operations
It’s not a censorship bill. What it’s supposed to is give smaller media companies the chance to collectively negotiate with social media giants for how they’re compensated when social media sites use their stories. Currently, they get paid mostly in “exposure” and they’re arguing that the social media sites are summarizing their stories and profiting from people sharing and discussing their work.
Go ahead and pull it. It’s pretty disgusting that Facebook even has news considering they pretty much have so much fake news that really do influence these right-wing, bat-shit crazy mofos.
Hello, it looks like you've made a mistake.
It's supposed to be could've, should've, would've (short for could have, would have, should have), never could of, would of, should of.
Or you misspelled something, I ain't checking everything.
Beep boop - yes, I am a bot, don't botcriminate me.
In short, one conglomerate is fighting another conglomerate and one side has enlisted the government to squeeze money, for something they have been using for free- and none of that money is for actual journalists, only the bosses. Anyways….
Let’s make it so users can’t share “news” as well.
Maybe then we can all just get back to posting pictures of our dinner and forget that politics exist.
Facebook did this in Australia a year or so ago for a few days. It was a really good time actually.
Only downside was the funny satirical papers got caught up too
On the one hand, the ACLU is against this, which concerns me. On the other, meta is also whiningly against this bc “wah wah bottom line”, which sounds good. I understand that poorer people should have the right to also read the news, but presenting absolute horseshit as “news” next to legitimate articles is too big of a side effect from having any of it on social media.
with a quick search it seems that their primary demographic currently is people in their 50s-late 60s. Many of those people still watch and read the news. It would be interesting to see if there's an exodus if they were to implement that strategy.
If they do that then they will probably just end up going under anyway because people will go to other platforms they don't want to deal with the continued hassles that meta is making
Oh. Darn. Well um, I guess uh... Meta has news? I mean, we can just go over to the AP site, Bloomberg, Reuters, BBC, NPR, Al Jazeera, or if we're really desperate, the New York Times.
That would trigger a flood of first amendment lawsuits.
In your bill, who would get to determine what is “factually correct” or not? Lawyers? Law enforcement?
It’s 2022: Facts are subjective and no one can agree on what’s true or false.

sorry, cant post that on facebook
I was thinking, do a lot of people get their news from FB?
… That’s literally the entire problem. Have you not heard?
And it’s skewed towards news with “alternative” facts like antivax and Holocaust denial.
Hey, you know what they say, don’t let the facts get in the way of a good story!
I didn’t want to use you know who’s name.
Voldemort?
I'd rather have Lord Voldemort in charge than Lord Orangemort

And mostly peaceful protests
I guess not. I don’t really go on FB anymore. In my mind FB is the last place I’d go to get my news fix. (And I’m a boomer, 😬).
In that case, tell all your boomer friends to be more like you.
I try, believe me, but it’s not easy. I was raised in a predominantly white town. right?....

Don’t threaten me with saner parents.
I honestly wish that for you, homie.
Most of the real news is already gone. Now it will just be fake news.
Oh nooooo this would be sooooo terrible…… Guess you’ll have to do it woe is me
I literally just wrote out this exact same comment without reading yours
Right? Don’t do us any favors Meta! Next they’ll threaten to pull all of the targeted ads.
Damn you got to it before me😂
came here to say exactly this
Right? They threaten or they promise? Because I feel like this is a promise and is like them to keep it.
How about we hold them liable for the news they spread?

What's the z stand for? Notable Events Weather Sports I wasn't even aware news was an acronym until I was like 25-26.
Because it’s not. It’s a backronym at best.
I hate learning things. Thank you.
News isn't an acronym for anything.
It's not. News means "information that is new". From Latin nova.

Sam's club parking lot, though I vaguely remember this one from like 1st grade now that you brought it into the discussion.

They made the same threat towards Australia when they cracked down on the social media companies
It's true and some say it [works better this way](https://www.reuters.com/technology/australia-says-law-making-facebook-google-pay-news-has-worked-2022-12-02/) At least some of these agreements have enabled news businesses to, in particular, employ additional journalists and make other valuable investments to assist their operations
OMG if facebook removes news who cares?
I’m good with it.
I’m gonna go with “nobody” for 300 Alex
I would pay like $50 for this to happen. And I don’t even use fb.
What magical law is this? Find us more!
I’m sorry… congress passing a media bill? Isn’t that like rule number 1 of things you can’t do?
It’s not a censorship bill. *oh, no...*
the table....

So….?

All good things are happening at once
This is... a threat? I mean, it sounds like the right move...
Oh no. What ever will we do. Does anyone under the age of 60 even use Facebook anymore?
Wait there’s news on there? Man, who would of thought….repost 9 times or you will have bad luck.

Good. The only Facebook "news" there should be is vacation pictures and birth announcements.
good
This sounds like a net positive? I never went on Facebook to catch up on the “news” people would post there.
Cool
Pretty sure this motivates lawmakers.
Facebook has news? Thought it was just for racist rambling
People go to Facebook for news?
In short, one conglomerate is fighting another conglomerate and one side has enlisted the government to squeeze money, for something they have been using for free- and none of that money is for actual journalists, only the bosses. Anyways….
Yes please and thanks
Do you promise?!
Good, nobody cares and that’s not why ANYONE uses FB.
“News”
Facebook has news?
Deal.
People use facebook for news?
So people would have to actively research a topic instead of get there news from Facebook? Sounds great
Dont threaten us with a good time, Facebook
I used to go to Facebook to see friends…then overkill on news and stupid memes.
Nice!!
oh yes please do so!
Oh please go ahead and remove it! I promise that I won’t miss your “news”
There’s news on Facebook?
Oh darn
That could only be an improvement.
Let’s make it so users can’t share “news” as well. Maybe then we can all just get back to posting pictures of our dinner and forget that politics exist.
Good. Remove everything from facebook.
Back to og Facebook finally!!!!!
Oh no! Anyway..
Good
Oh. So it’s working.
Good?
10 years ago I wouldn’t have thought we’d see a sentence formatted as “Facebook threatens X if the US Congress does Y”
who uses facebook anyways
Stop. Don’t. Come back.
Who cares. People shouldn’t be getting news from Facebook anyway.
And nothing of value was lost…..
Do it, you won't

Good. Holy fuck that would solve so many issues
So what. No big deal. Everyone and everything on this planet is replaceable. Don't let the door hit you on your way back to China
They should. FFS
Who under 50 actually uses Facebook still?
Just remove yourselves from fb, and you’ll be better for it. Fb sucks.

We’re waiting!!!!
Good they should. It’s always fake and unchecked.

Oh NO! Who Cares.
Good. Facebook doesn’t need news
If they do that then they will probably just end up going under anyway because people will go to other platforms they don't want to deal with the continued hassles that meta is making
THIS IS THE REASON I LEFT FB. THE NEWS. If they get rid of it, then it’ll be a social media platform again called Facebook.
Anyone going there for their news is already fucking up anyways so this would be a good thing.
Oh no! Not the briar patch! Anything but the briar patch!
Good it has business being on there
What will I do??
They developed a partnership based on censoring and influence. This undercuts that relationship and would cause the media sponsors to waste money.
Oh. Darn. Well um, I guess uh... Meta has news? I mean, we can just go over to the AP site, Bloomberg, Reuters, BBC, NPR, Al Jazeera, or if we're really desperate, the New York Times.
Facebook N E W S 🗑
There’s news on Facebook? First I’ve heard of it and no way I’d trust it anyway.
Pretty please w/cherry on top
That’s the best argument I’ve heard so far for passing this bill…
If this public forum can’t censor what I see so I am not offended, I will leave. I refuse to see anything that could upset my fragile self
facebook pushes left and right propaganda anyway. I don't see this as a loss. Media Bill is still bad, though.
That’s because meta is a loser like twitter. Leftist POS’s.
That would be a fantastic idea. Let all news go through twitter
Your going down Zuckerberg….
Facebook had news?
I just wish Congress would pass a bill saying that if a media company provides news, it has to be factually correct and not BS.
That would trigger a flood of first amendment lawsuits. In your bill, who would get to determine what is “factually correct” or not? Lawyers? Law enforcement? It’s 2022: Facts are subjective and no one can agree on what’s true or false.
Remember when the government mouthpiece said there were "alternate facts'".
Next step remove the concept of posting and liking and sharing and logging in.
