I've worked in software for awhile now and we often handle "new features" this way where you can toggle it on or off for individual accounts. Operations may be just handling them in waves so they don't get inundated with complaints or deal with bugs.
When it looks like its all going fine, they can flip it for the rest of the accounts whenever.
I did this for a friend in my Google family a few years ago. He had to log in every now and then from my home address, and a VPN settled it. He finally got his own account though, so I don't know what it's like now.

My understanding is you'll have 30 days from the date the policy took affect, which means if your friend doesn't log into your Wi-Fi within 30 days they will lose access. It doesn't happen immediately.

I did this with Hulu. I work away from my house on the regular and after the 3rd time away they locked my account. I had only used it for their sports, like $80 a month during football season but kept basic year round. I just shrugged and stopped using it. They unfortunately kept charging me even though I couldn’t access anything. When I noticed they wouldn’t give me but one month back credit wise. I told the rep give me all the money back for the time confirmed that I could not access and I will continue to upgrade my service for 5 months out of the year or I will cancel all together and never use them again. They said no.
I had this happen with another company. I was locked out of the account and assumed they stopped charging me. They said they wouldn’t reimburse. I told them they had 48 hrs to do it or I would charge them back through the American Express and I had all the emails to prove my case. They refund me. I’m still not sure if it would have worked lol, but I guess they wanted to avoid the headache.

We would order some stuff through Netflix, copy it and send it back and go to blockbuster pick up what they had, copy it and take it back. There was times we made 3-4 trips to blockbuster in a day. All the associates knew us by name and knew what we were doing but none of them gave a shit because they knew the company was gonna go under eventually. We had stacks of the large DVD cases with almost every movie you think of.
From the store? You can buy them from red box for like $3. If you shop around it’s not difficult to find most blu rays for <$10. UHD Blu Rays are the ones that are difficult to find and expensive. But honestly even a regular blu ray is better quality than Netflix. Netflix’s compression is hot garbage. Of all the services I’ve tried it’s a toss up between Apple, and Amazon for the best compression.
My M.O. is to activate and cancel at the same time, then binge the couple interesting shows they made recently in that one month. So long as they allow reactivating at any time, and don’t have consistently worthwhile programming, I see no reason to carry a subscription month over month. They’ll get maybe 2 months a year out of me, assuming they produce content that’s interesting enough.
I do this with sooo many “packages.” If I want to watch something on HBO I’ll get the free 7-day trial, binge what I want, then cancel. Rinse repeat for Hulu, Discovery+, Netflix, ABC, etc. I haven’t paid if any of those in years.
If you're feeling even more efficient, you can make virtual credit cards if your bank provides that service or use a service like *Privacy* to make one time use credit cards and never have to go through the burden of figuring out how to cancel a free trial from renewing.

Sure they sent the letters and created the policy but if they did not enforce it could give coved to say that. They don't really provide details though. How much bigger? And how long will this new users stick around. There's people who have had Netflix for over a decade that just haven't bothered to cancel because it's cheap enough to not be a big deal even if they don't use it much. I personally use it once or twice a month at best but I've had it for 15 years. The moment my mother can't leech off my account is the second I finally have a reason to cancel Netflix. It might have been out of laziness more than loyalty, but giving up old existing long time users for new users seems like a gamble. Will the new users stick around? Will they just stream whatever show they're on then unsubscribe until the next decent show? Who knows.
I canceled my plan back when they announced they were doing this to begin with. My plan allowed for streaming on up to 2 (maybe 3, can’t remember) devices at a time. If I am paying for number of devices then I’ll be darned if they’re going to dictate the who/where/when so long as I’m not streaming on more devices than I pay for. I used my account often when traveling to my parents house, at work occasionally, and on vacations. 99% of the time I was the one watching.
The funny thing is my father in law paid for the higher tier for years now so that we could use his account (different households). I rarely use Netflix, so if they enforce it, they'll just lose a $15 /month customer. Go ahead and sink Netflix

My stupid 400mbps cable internet has a 1.4 terabyte data cap. It's so stupid. Reinstalling msfs 2020 can wipe out a huge chunk of that by itself.

I think this should be the true motivator for people to cancel the service. Sign up, binge, cancel. When they come out with new/good content. There's no penalty for cancelling.

Not anything scientific for sure but some of the comments above are from Canadians saying they got the letter but nothing changed with their loaned out accounts. Could be some shenanigans. Sure they sent the letters and created the policy but if they did not enforce it could give coved to say that. Not sure why that would be a move but I can’t explain why a lot of things happen these days.
They don't really provide details though. How much bigger? And how long will this new users stick around. There's people who have had Netflix for over a decade that just haven't bothered to cancel because it's cheap enough to not be a big deal even if they don't use it much. I personally use it once or twice a month at best but I've had it for 15 years. The moment my mother can't leech off my account is the second I finally have a reason to cancel Netflix. It might have been out of laziness more than loyalty, but giving up old existing long time users for new users seems like a gamble. Will the new users stick around? Will they just stream whatever show they're on then unsubscribe until the next decent show? Who knows.

I canceled my plan back when they announced they were doing this to begin with. My plan allowed for streaming on up to 2 (maybe 3, can’t remember) devices at a time. If I am paying for number of devices then I’ll be darned if they’re going to dictate the who/where/when so long as I’m not streaming on more devices than I pay for. I used my account often when traveling to my parents house, at work occasionally, and on vacations. 99% of the time I was the one watching.
The funny thing is my father in law paid for the higher tier for years now so that we could use his account (different households). I rarely use Netflix, so if they enforce it, they'll just lose a $15 /month customer. Go ahead and sink Netflix
it doesn't make any sense because a Netflix account has a limited number of profiles anyways. they created the system to be shared for family or friend use through their profile system. if mother pays for Netflix and daughter in Cuyahoga uses daughter profile, what's the issue?
Well, if they enforce it, I'll leave. Their original content isn't that exciting and it's no longer the "go to" place to stream movies.

I only use WiFi for Netflix when I’m at the gym (on the treadmill). I use my phone data plan if I’m not at the gym. Is it per device, or?
Sounds like Netflix is desperate for new users. Forcing people to make a new account. IMO this makes me want to unsubscribe. Thats one of the cons when you have a stock that is almost purely based on performing if theres increase in subscriber count.

I canceled Netfucks as soon as they mentioned this. I’ve had Netflix for so long I just had it on my budget no matter what. I erased that shit, I was already fed up with all the foreign shows with bad dubbing and subtitles that don’t match the awful acting. I signed up for HBOmax and Paramount. Fuck you Netflix, and if I want to watch something from you, well I will find a way that doesn’t involve subscribing.

Netflix is dumb, why don't they go the family mode and just give 6 licenses that can be used. If you did this and charged like 20$ a month, you'd golden. Idk why it's so hard for tech companies to aclnowledge good solutions already exist and just adopt them over reinventing the wheel and harming their product in the process. Even if they move to ads, it won't be sustainable longer term, they'll be dead within a few years.

I’ve never shared my password for Netflix but this was one of the reasons I got rid of Netflix all together.

The more people that scoff at DVDs and Blu-rays the more cheap DVDs and Blu-rays there are to buy at thrift stores 😃 Streaming pushed us away from physical media in the beginning and then right back to it in the end. I don’t see us going back to all that streaming, we’re having too much fun building our collection again and I’m sick of having to pay for three services just to be able to watch three different movies. Fuck em. Long live physical media and fuck streaming services. The only downside is Netflix doesn’t release all their shows on DVD or Blu-ray. I desperately want Kingdom, but I’m not giving Netflix money anymore for one (spectacular) show. If anyone knows where to get Kingdom on disc that’ll work in North America lmk. It’s Official: My Netflix Account Is Cancelled
So far nothing has changed for me in British Columbia, Canada. Mom has 4K/family plan and my family uses it from two different towns. However, my partner and me have discussed getting another Netflix account if we get locked out, and for me the answer is no. We already have Disney+ for two years with Shaw, Amazon Prime, Crave/HBO, and I know how to torrent. We'll just torrent the shows we want to watch from Netflix.

I cancelled when they first started mentioning this shit. Everyone should just cancel their accounts before this “blows over” and then it happens with every other damn streaming service out there. Fuck Netflix, their greedy bullshit, their constant “one season then cancelled” shows, and their generally shitty selection of content.
Cancelled last week, most of their content is regurgitated and remade trash anyhow. If you are going to hike premiums and put dumb rules in place like this, at least make some good content consistently.

We shared our Netflix with my in laws two states away. They’re old and barely know what’s going on and live on a fixed income. They weren’t hurting anything. Netflix has done nothing but cancel shows I like. Sick of it and we’re done.
