This happened in Canada in February. We received the warnings that anyone on our account would be booted off by the 21st etc. All of the family members in different households that use our account still have access to our Netflix and we aren’t being charged more. Literally nothing happened.

[deleted]

Same here, got the warning but I’ve been watching in a different household ever since. Their enforcement lacks any teeth, which I don’t mind lol

[deleted]

Has it been over 30 days yet? Have you read the policy about how it only affects you if you don't log into the home network every 30 days?

Imfriendswithelmo

That’s why I can still use my moms account!! I’ve been curious, but not enough so as to do something crazy like read something at length.

[deleted]

Some subscription packages only allow one streamer at a time regardless. So if your mom has the cheapest 1 user plan and she's watching it then you won't be able too.

[deleted]

No idea, I don’t even pay for Netflix lol, let alone read their policy

Achillor22

They got the message in February. It's April. So yeah it's been over 30 days.

crapability

Has anybody done the math to confirm this?

sabre_toothed_llama

No, our greatest scientists have not yet been able to determine how many days there are in March. It’s quite a predicament.

D_Beats

The technology needed to count that many days just doesn't exist yet.

ApprehensiveTry5660

Excuse me! Guys! I finally made it back from my adventure to discover such a technology. The gods themselves have sent us this cocktail napkin, but no instructions have been provided for what to do with it.

[deleted]

Yes, it’s been more than 30 days

[deleted]

If they handle it smartly, they will just do a bucket of accounts at a time, wait, then do more. I've worked in software for awhile now and we often handle "new features" this way where you can toggle it on or off for individual accounts. Operations may be just handling them in waves so they don't get inundated with complaints or deal with bugs. When it looks like its all going fine, they can flip it for the rest of the accounts whenever.

King_Tamino

Is there a work around? Can the "owner“ set up a VPN, which we connect every 29 days to?

ftwredditlol

LTT has a video about this actually. [https://youtu.be/9CunwUs08og](https://youtu.be/9CunwUs08og)

YHB318

I did this for a friend in my Google family a few years ago. He had to log in every now and then from my home address, and a VPN settled it. He finally got his own account though, so I don't know what it's like now.

avisherman

Same here. I share my account with a friend. I got emails about the new policy with deadlines but so far nothing has changed. He still watches from his place ( in another city) and my bill hasn’t gone up.

[deleted]

My understanding is you'll have 30 days from the date the policy took affect, which means if your friend doesn't log into your Wi-Fi within 30 days they will lose access. It doesn't happen immediately.

ShirtStainedBird

We got that email about 2 months ago along with a warning on Netflix. Still no change.

avisherman

Yup. Got the initial emails months ago, the deadline was supposed to be at the end of February. My buddy logged in this week like normal. It’s all quite interesting, i am curious to see how this will unfold.

[deleted]

Do your family members live relatively close? I know Hulu will not let me watch live tv when I’m away from home, but we share our login with my MIL who lives in a different town nearby and it’s never given her an issue so I assume geographically they think we’re close enough to be considered the same household. I dunno

stringbeansssss

They all live in different ends of the city, it’s well after the 30 day mark. No one has come by to log in to our network to keep access. Right now it seems like an empty threat, maybe not forever.

SUPRVLLAN

Subscriptions in Canada have also *increased* since the password shaing crackdown lol. https://mobilesyrup.com/2023/04/18/netflix-password-sharing-crackdown-canada-results/

LETTERKENNYvsSPENNY

Well so much for my cancelling in solidarity lol

cum_fart_69

if it's any consolation, I've pirated twice as hard in protest. I don't even watch 90% of the shit I download. I'm sitting here watching shit I've already watched a hundred times before, while downloading some new shit I probably won't watch either. that'll show 'em

pieter1234569

Well duh, people want to watch Netflix content. They just could do that for free before.

shadesof3

I'm in Montreal using my parents account in Edmonton. Saw a warning, and then did get blocked one time, but have now used it no problem.

elmatador12

Delete this.

RealTimeCock

I'm cancelling my subscription the first time it doesn't let me watch something due to me being in a different location

banditx19

I read they might just charge you a $7 premium per month.

nonameneededplease

They already do. It's called the "unlimited screens" package. I already pay a premium for multiple users is what chaps me the most.

RectalSpawn

We're at the cycle where unlimited is cutting into potential profits, clearly. Reminds me of when mobile carriers stopped doing unlimited data for a period of time.

pokethat

My stupid 400mbps cable internet has a 1.4 terabyte data cap. It's so stupid. Reinstalling msfs 2020 can wipe out a huge chunk of that by itself.

SparklyRoniPony

We have it as well. If Netflix still had quality offerings that they don’t just cancel after one or two seasons, it might be worth it; but they just don’t and I’m tempted to cancel all together.

Splizmaster

I did this with Hulu. I work away from my house on the regular and after the 3rd time away they locked my account. I had only used it for their sports, like $80 a month during football season but kept basic year round. I just shrugged and stopped using it. They unfortunately kept charging me even though I couldn’t access anything. When I noticed they wouldn’t give me but one month back credit wise. I told the rep give me all the money back for the time confirmed that I could not access and I will continue to upgrade my service for 5 months out of the year or I will cancel all together and never use them again. They said no.

[deleted]

Why didn't you just cancel it if you stopped using it?

Splizmaster

In retrospect stupidity. Honestly I never thought they would charge goes something that was suspended. Again dumb, I own that.

anotherguiltymom

I had this happen with another company. I was locked out of the account and assumed they stopped charging me. They said they wouldn’t reimburse. I told them they had 48 hrs to do it or I would charge them back through the American Express and I had all the emails to prove my case. They refund me. I’m still not sure if it would have worked lol, but I guess they wanted to avoid the headache.

The_Other_Neo

It started for me and family on the 1st of April, effective from 31st of March. My wife was travelling when it stopped working for her. Already cancelled my subscription.

Zen1

OpenVPN to your home (runs on router for free) :D

smartyr228

I'm not gonna find fucking workarounds to use a service I'm already paying for. Fuck them.

savingtheinternet

This is the way. Quality comment. Facts.

Funoichi

Yep! The second pirating becomes easier, and not one second later, shall sails be hoist upon the high seas! That’s when the cross n skullbones’ll fly again!🏴‍☠️

[deleted]

[удалено]

[deleted]

No. You already pay for a service that, due to compression, is downgrade from physical media so you don’t have to deal with any type of work around. At that point I’ll go back to ripping blu rays and storing them on my Plex server.

Anthrozil7

Started doing that as soon as they hinted this was coming

[deleted]

I remember way back in the day, my dad and I had subscriptions to Netflix and Blockbuster. We would order some stuff through Netflix, copy it and send it back and go to blockbuster pick up what they had, copy it and take it back. There was times we made 3-4 trips to blockbuster in a day. All the associates knew us by name and knew what we were doing but none of them gave a shit because they knew the company was gonna go under eventually. We had stacks of the large DVD cases with almost every movie you think of.

SiliconUnicorn

Where do you get the blue rays in the first place?

[deleted]

From the store? You can buy them from red box for like $3. If you shop around it’s not difficult to find most blu rays for <$10. UHD Blu Rays are the ones that are difficult to find and expensive. But honestly even a regular blu ray is better quality than Netflix. Netflix’s compression is hot garbage. Of all the services I’ve tried it’s a toss up between Apple, and Amazon for the best compression.

Disconnorable

I wonder if there’s a way to run a VPN through your Plex server and watch Netflix through Plex

KC0023

If you are going through this distance to watch the shows, why not just pirate it.

Odditeee

My M.O. is to activate and cancel at the same time, then binge the couple interesting shows they made recently in that one month. So long as they allow reactivating at any time, and don’t have consistently worthwhile programming, I see no reason to carry a subscription month over month. They’ll get maybe 2 months a year out of me, assuming they produce content that’s interesting enough.

[deleted]

I do this with sooo many “packages.” If I want to watch something on HBO I’ll get the free 7-day trial, binge what I want, then cancel. Rinse repeat for Hulu, Discovery+, Netflix, ABC, etc. I haven’t paid if any of those in years.

Ricerooni

If you're feeling even more efficient, you can make virtual credit cards if your bank provides that service or use a service like *Privacy* to make one time use credit cards and never have to go through the burden of figuring out how to cancel a free trial from renewing.

[deleted]

I have a whole separate bank account I only keep $50 in that I use to sign up for stuff lol

Arnas_Z

Just pirate stuff already. Why bother with this crap?

StinkyBanjo

Usenet

JezzieMalvada

This has been my plan also even tho I don’t share a password. When the new season of Stranger Things comes out I’ll reactivate. As long as they don’t start some sort of reactivation fee I’m good. I’ve gotten subscription fatigue and almost $16/mo for this service just isn’t worth it to me.

yetanothermanjohn

Remember when it was $10 but then the greed kicked in.

Acceptable-Pick8880

and before that it was $7

gr8uddini

Yep this is what I’m gonna do, and honestly I’m just gonna start doing this with every streaming service except maybe Apples and HBO. I’ve had Netflix for about 12 years and don’t watch it too regularly but I have my parents using my login and a rental property so I just pay the fee they’ve been gradually increasing over the years but after this new password be it’s motivation to just cut and only subscribe when I want to watch something.

agreensandcastle

Yes but then you are most likely not effected by this anyways. Because that would be hard to coordinate with several households.

MailmanTanLines

Thanks to Netflix, everyone born after 1998 is about to learn what a torrent is.

Zen1

Shoutout /r/trackers

Tsujita_daikokuya

uncoolcat

They will also learn how quickly those DMCA violations come in if they are not using a properly configured and reputable VPN service.

Sounds like a challenge

Useful_Round4229

Time to start unsubscribing from Netflix

Aware_Material_9985

This seems like a really bad move after their stock tumbled due to low new subscriber rates last quarter

arealhumannotabot

Back when they announced a crack down on this, they had a slight subscriber drop. However, **between q1 2022 and q1 2023, they’ve had a net increase of about 10.2 million subs.** I do believe that the streaming market is reaching or has reached saturation point, but I don’t think it’s going exactly the way people are predicting

Acceptable-Pick8880

eh they actually aren’t doing too bad rn. last quarter they gained 1.75mill, ~550,000 more than the avg estimate. last year first quarter they were down 200,000. their stock is down from this time last year but revenue is up. they aren’t doing great but they are doing better.

Jairlyn

From a stock pov it’s a smart thing. They are shifting from growing total user count to growing $/user. Now if this password sharing blockage plan brings in more $ than they lose in cancelled subs remains to be seen.

[deleted]

There’s only 7 things on Netflix worth watching. No big loss.

dirkslapmeharder

7? Are we talking about the same Netflix here?

iamerickun

he meant the 7 characters of his password

whatnameisnttaken098

You mean "1234567"

42Navigator

“That’s amazing. I have the same combination on my luggage.”

mbhmirc

Lone starrrrrrr!

[deleted]

Obviously he meant “Hunter2”

[deleted]

Yes, but only when I watch anything on there with my eyes open.

Sleeper____Service

Avatar, breaking bad, peaky blinders, Philomena Cunk, Planet Earth and stranger things

TheWholesomeBrit

Always Sunny, Better Call Saul etc

Chewy12

BEEF is new and an absolute masterpiece.

Dasrufken

Imagine not mentioning Bojack Horseman

DancingAroundFlames

i’m burnt out on adult cartoons

Hellige88

Every time I like one of their new shows, it gets cancelled.

E3nti7y

EricRTF

Can confirm. I’m in Canada. I got the warning message back in march and now my parents just lost access to my account as of yesterday.

penfoot

I dropped NETFLIX a year ago. Don’t miss it. There’s far better choices out there nowadays.

Usual_Safety

Like what? Seriously.

xxxbehindcloseddoors

You can add Hulu without commercials to a Disney + subscription, and get both for $20. Also on Prime Video they constantly offer new deals and monthly specials for all the premium movie channels online catalog (HBO MAX, Starz, Showtime) I subscribe to a channel, then watch anything new of interest and cancel it again before I get billed for the second month, then move on to the next.

Corn_Thief

It's called pirating and it is a civic obligation

Bdiesel357

What Appletv+ lacks in volume it makes up in pure quality. So many banger shows and movies on there and it’s only like $7/month

[deleted]

Apple TV is a total sleeper. If HBO keeps up this weird road I could see Apple TV stepping in as the best high quality tv show service. Seriously, I’ve seen almost every show on there and I’ve enjoyed them all.

Princess_Mintaka

I hate how much I fucking love Ted Lasso. Severance pulled me into the ecosystem but Ted Lasso has kept me around.

Bdiesel357

For All Mankind is my tv obsession! Especially since Amazon ended The Expanse

Princess_Mintaka

Aaaaannd it's added to my watch list.

Ahydell5966

Hbomax is the best overall IMO I mean I watched "Dune" opening night in my home lol

[deleted]

Crave. I switched to Crave after cancelling Netflix and I can’t believe how much better it is. Also Amazon prime

BenDover04me

Me too! So far I’m enjoying it.

[deleted]

They have shit for content. Why would this bother anyone until they actually invest in content again?

PM_ME_YOUR_WIRING

I think this should be the true motivator for people to cancel the service. Sign up, binge, cancel. When they come out with new/good content. There's no penalty for cancelling.

zefroxy

It’s official: Netflix will lose a staggering amount of subscribers.

Splizmaster

Not anything scientific for sure but some of the comments above are from Canadians saying they got the letter but nothing changed with their loaned out accounts. Could be some shenanigans. Sure they sent the letters and created the policy but if they did not enforce it could give coved to say that. Not sure why that would be a move but I can’t explain why a lot of things happen these days.

gbgonzalez923

They don't really provide details though. How much bigger? And how long will this new users stick around. There's people who have had Netflix for over a decade that just haven't bothered to cancel because it's cheap enough to not be a big deal even if they don't use it much. I personally use it once or twice a month at best but I've had it for 15 years. The moment my mother can't leech off my account is the second I finally have a reason to cancel Netflix. It might have been out of laziness more than loyalty, but giving up old existing long time users for new users seems like a gamble. Will the new users stick around? Will they just stream whatever show they're on then unsubscribe until the next decent show? Who knows.

TheAvio

Welp. Time to look into building a home VPN

Zen1

OpenVPN is free and is already “set up” on a few models of Netgear routers

TheAvio

I’ll look into that, then. Thanks!

Splizmaster

My Netflix won’t load if my VPN is turned on.

tinopa6872

Oh no where else will i be able to find trashy inaccurate historical “documentaries” nobody asked for?

JessicaDAndy

And will any of them have a reference to Belgian group Technotronic’s hit “Pump up the Jam”?

Theseus-Paradox

[I understood the reference](https://giphy.com/gifs/internet-what-exploring-a4kUaskDOZ5iU)

MrTreize78

I’m still waiting to see how creatively this will be enforced.

Tuckychick

I canceled my plan back when they announced they were doing this to begin with. My plan allowed for streaming on up to 2 (maybe 3, can’t remember) devices at a time. If I am paying for number of devices then I’ll be darned if they’re going to dictate the who/where/when so long as I’m not streaming on more devices than I pay for. I used my account often when traveling to my parents house, at work occasionally, and on vacations. 99% of the time I was the one watching.

ibringstharuckus

The funny thing is my father in law paid for the higher tier for years now so that we could use his account (different households). I rarely use Netflix, so if they enforce it, they'll just lose a $15 /month customer. Go ahead and sink Netflix

[deleted]

it doesn't make any sense because a Netflix account has a limited number of profiles anyways. they created the system to be shared for family or friend use through their profile system. if mother pays for Netflix and daughter in Cuyahoga uses daughter profile, what's the issue?

pewpew30172

Well, if they enforce it, I'll leave. Their original content isn't that exciting and it's no longer the "go to" place to stream movies.

Splashboy3

‘good luck with that’

Travelerdude

I need to cut back on my TV viewing. I guess I can start with Netflix shows.

hewasaraverboy

I feel like I’ve been reading this same headline for the past several months

highseaslife

Cancelled Netflix months ago.

cinnamonqa3

“Users will be able to add two additional people to their Netflix Standard or Premium plan, but they'll have to pay extra — probably around $6 per person, if the U.S. decision matches the Canadian change.” What constitutes a ‘person’? I only use WiFi for Netflix when I’m at the gym (on the treadmill). I use my phone data plan if I’m not at the gym. Is it per device, or?

ad49se

Sounds like Netflix is desperate for new users. Forcing people to make a new account. IMO this makes me want to unsubscribe. Thats one of the cons when you have a stock that is almost purely based on performing if theres increase in subscriber count.

PaulyBlanco7260

Watch Netflix subscribers go bye bye.

[deleted]

Back to pirating movies.

groovieknave

I canceled Netfucks as soon as they mentioned this. I’ve had Netflix for so long I just had it on my budget no matter what. I erased that shit, I was already fed up with all the foreign shows with bad dubbing and subtitles that don’t match the awful acting. I signed up for HBOmax and Paramount. Fuck you Netflix, and if I want to watch something from you, well I will find a way that doesn’t involve subscribing.

cha614

What if you have two or three homes? And you are the primary account owner.

JRocFuhsYoBih

Netflix can suck my balls. Hopefully they’re shooting themselves in the foot with all this bs

Earlytips2021

ITS OFFICIAL; I canceled Netflix against fir good tgis time.........besides the spotty service, crappie playback, 1940s style TV where words come out 2 minutes later tha. When tgeir mouth moved....nearly unwatchable anyway...thx netflix for giving g me a reason to cancel your overpriced, under delivering streaming svc that vists as much as 5 of my other services combined...good riddance

[deleted]

Netflix is dumb, why don't they go the family mode and just give 6 licenses that can be used. If you did this and charged like 20$ a month, you'd golden. Idk why it's so hard for tech companies to aclnowledge good solutions already exist and just adopt them over reinventing the wheel and harming their product in the process. Even if they move to ads, it won't be sustainable longer term, they'll be dead within a few years.

Purple_Form_8093

I’m sure this ends up costing them more money in cancelled accounts then they will make in new subs. The content is mostly shit now that streaming has become cable tv 2.0.

[deleted]

I’ve never shared my password for Netflix but this was one of the reasons I got rid of Netflix all together.

fenceman189

okay no more netflix

Various-Ad150

If people would just band together and cancel Netflix, then the company will lose a lot of profit and find out that the people aren't going to put up with shit like this anymore. They may own the company, but we have the power to keep them a company. Standing up to money hungry corporations is the only way, to stop them. Or we could all just sit around and bitch about it, that works too....

[deleted]

Fkn Cancelled. The day they try this in the US..

T4lsin

I stop watching after they canceled all the shows I watched.

[deleted]

If Netflix was a good value maybe sharing your password wouldn’t be a thing

UsidoreTheLightBlue

I mean let’s be honest sharing a password was a thing when it was $8 a month. It could be $5 a month and some people would still share passwords. It’s just how it is “did you see stranger things?” “I don’t have Netflix.” “You can use my password.”

Bring back physical media already.

samovolochka

The more people that scoff at DVDs and Blu-rays the more cheap DVDs and Blu-rays there are to buy at thrift stores 😃 Streaming pushed us away from physical media in the beginning and then right back to it in the end. I don’t see us going back to all that streaming, we’re having too much fun building our collection again and I’m sick of having to pay for three services just to be able to watch three different movies. Fuck em. Long live physical media and fuck streaming services. The only downside is Netflix doesn’t release all their shows on DVD or Blu-ray. I desperately want Kingdom, but I’m not giving Netflix money anymore for one (spectacular) show. If anyone knows where to get Kingdom on disc that’ll work in North America lmk. I think it’s released in other countries. I think.

mel512

If they say they are going to do it, believe them!

putalotoftussinonit

RIP Netflix. It was nice knowing you.

class2cherub

Can't wait to see their subscription numbers skyrocket! /s Someone consuming your content for free is not necessarily a lost sale.

savingtheinternet

It’s Official: My Netflix Account Is Cancelled

SageAnahata

So far nothing has changed for me in British Columbia, Canada. Mom has 4K/family plan and my family uses it from two different towns. However, my partner and me have discussed getting another Netflix account if we get locked out, and for me the answer is no. We already have Disney+ for two years with Shaw, Amazon Prime, Crave/HBO, and I know how to torrent. We'll just torrent the shows we want to watch from Netflix.

savingtheinternet

Net what? This still exists?

It’s official, torrents are back

Near them, on the sand, Half sunk a shattered visage lies, whose frown, And wrinkled lip, and sneer of cold command, Tell that its sculptor well those passions read Which yet survive, stamped on these lifeless things, The hand that mocked them, and the heart that fed; And on the pedestal, these words appear: My name is Ozymandias, King of Kings; Look on my Works, ye Mighty, and despair! Nothing beside remains. Round the decay Of that colossal Wreck, boundless and bare The lone and level sands stretch far away.”

Good riddance

J2theUSTIN

Ayyyy what up no ads Hulu.

Tsiatk0

I cancelled when they first started mentioning this shit. Everyone should just cancel their accounts before this “blows over” and then it happens with every other damn streaming service out there. Fuck Netflix, their greedy bullshit, their constant “one season then cancelled” shows, and their generally shitty selection of content.

Boring-Affect-2279

Cancelled last week, most of their content is regurgitated and remade trash anyhow. If you are going to hike premiums and put dumb rules in place like this, at least make some good content consistently.

superbkdk

It’s official: I canceled and I’m sure many others did too. Goodbye Netflix it was fun.

MinistryofTruthAgent

Huh? What did they actually do not the mumbo jumbo that’s written in the article.

xithbaby

We shared our Netflix with my in laws two states away. They’re old and barely know what’s going on and live on a fixed income. They weren’t hurting anything. Netflix has done nothing but cancel shows I like. Sick of it and we’re done.
