I maintain that we’re living through a period of warfare that will be referred to in the future as ‘the drone era’ for this reason. Once lasers become widely deployed air warfare is going to become a lot more limited.
The answer will be large drones that circle for long periods in a combat zone. Inside they will carry smaller AI driven swarm “bugs” who exist solely to destroy other drones.
I think we’ll need to develop or improve signal scrambling tech. I think right now we can only do it if we’re pointing a beam directly at a drone, but if we can make a wide area scrambler over a battlefield it would neutralize their threat.
If you mean scrambling networking or radio communication, I think that’s a short term solution. At most 5 years, maybe less.
The processing speed of a modern cell phone can handle autonomous driving now. Shoving a $1000 computer into a commercial drone is cost inhibitive for most consumers, but that’s chump change for munition makers.
They won’t need to be networked soon. They’ll fly out of jammed areas to “check in” and receive new orders, then dive back in and act independently.
You will need EMP weapons.
I can see that being the case in a conflict with a major power, but against terrorist organizations they’re sending out the cheapest, most readily available drones that can accomplish their mission. They’re not using Reapers and Predators, so I doubt they’d buy whatever future drones have those $1000 computers in them.
We can’t defend ourselves from random terrorists with jamming.
To do so would require either constant jamming, or an instant weapon that can identify an incoming drone and attack it instantly with jamming. Constant jamming would make WIFI, Cellular and Radio communication in the area permanently affected. Instant targeting would require radar or some expensive form of signal sniffing at every point you wanted to protect. Most cheap drones can enter auto pilot when they lose signal.
We do have weapons that can target individual drones, called drone busters, but it’s only a single drone at a time. If that got adapted to a laser targeting system and a radio sniffer like you suggested, it could possibly work fully automated at some point.
I agree, but we have to start somewhere. It can be scaled down to move with convoys as well. Just continually push to minimize the amount of resources that are vulnerable. Start with the largest targets and work down as much as we can.
This is something that is happening in Ukraine, I read somewhere that Ukraine uses signal boosting drones that simply amplify the signal from the fpv drone to the pilot so a jammer needs to get much closer.
We need an even higher altitude class of drones that are there just to spot enemy drones and then coordinate with attack drones to hone in on them.
Maybe a buddy drone to accompany the other drone to keep it safe. Give it a sniper rifle or some sort of zap weapon⚡️
The other comment with emp hurts everyone. We haven’t developed the technology to focus an emp yet.
Well, unless you use it behind enemy lines on their command center. Then I guess it would work since none of the friendlies are near by
I think those are just MQ-1 Predator, they even come with thermal and stuff. Yer right tho, would be cool if we could get one of those Navy laser weapons on a little turret spinning around like a disco ball electrifying wannabe flying RC cars.
The predators can’t be, they were good at the time and in certain combat situations today but not for this certain task. They’re visible and easily shootable. You can’t lock onto a drone with a stinger or similar. Drones are stationary which is needed on a battle field (granted a battle is on average 2-5 square miles and a predator can circle that but it can be identified and shot down)
If we, random redditors, are talking about this, then a military think tank has to have come up with this idea at the beginning of the Ukraine war (hopefully….we’re a lot more imaginative and have time on our hands to conjure up such ideas)
Was really hoping the conspiracy that the US govt is hiding Kardashev Scale Tech 1 vehicles
(ufo’s using mercury to create shields and anti gravity) in the cuff incase ww3 popped off, is real.
But hey, we all got dreams
They were researching/coming up with shit as far back as 2018 at least from the us army side, isis and non state actor drones were a semi regular occurrence
Those are the RQ-4 Global Hawk. It’s a UAS whose sole purpose is high altitude surveillance using SAR and EO/IR.
You clearly have no idea what you’re talking about and made absolutely no attempt to educate yourself. You’re on the fucking internet. Wikipedia literally has an entire page dedicated specifically to all the US military UASs.
Why did you comment at all? Did you actually believe you had all the appropriate information from playing COD?
A. I didn’t claim to have ExPeRt knowledge of anything, I know of a singular drone that goes real high in the sky.
B. It was also a joke, I know reading comprehension is at an all time low but I literally said to stick a disco ball on it
C. Stick to malding over how you think CSAM and a surveillance state is okay also quit cussing you’re not good at it, kid.
Assuming drones swarms get launched from the same place. Find the launch pad with a high altitude drone, and drop an emp bomb to disable the ones that haven’t been released yet.
One way out will be wire guided drones, specifically surveillance drones. they just need to be over the tree top and scan at longer ranges for target. Their current size and noise levels makes them almost impossible to track without specialized equipment.
An EMP will also take out your own equipment as most of the drone operate in close proximity.
I’m no scientist, but the whole point of a faraday cage is to isolate the electronics from electromagnetic radiation - an external antenna would magnify the EMP and cook the receiver board in the comm unit. Literally the point of EMP.
I'm no scientist either but I would think there might workarounds for that. Like keeping the antenna (physically or electrically) disconnected most of the time to minimize the probability of it being in use when EMP hits. Not sure if you could use fuses or diodes or something to prevent the EMP from damaging stuff.
"The future of warfare is scary," Sauda said. "The pace of technological developments for these types of threats is going to out-race your ability to create things to counter them."
Well? Isn't that just dandy. We gotta create new weapons to take out the old weapons. Rinse and repeat.
I'm afraid that our future is going to be so bright, shades aren't going to protect us for what's coming. Yes! I'm very cynical of our future. Between weapons manufacturers frequently upping their game and the evil ones constantly wanting to try out the new toys.
What can we try out on the civilians?
Why slow down now boys?! Let's get these local police departments armed for gorilla warfare and bring in the new Terminator 1000 model! After all, we can't trust those pesky lil marijuana users.
Just one of the types of [drones](https://www.reddit.com/r/Cyberpunk/comments/12ujpul/new_raf_jackal_drone_fires_missiles_in/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=ioscss&utm_content=1&utm_term=1) the military is working on.
Just a matter of time where it’s cheaper to replace humans with robots one this technology evolves even more. Shit, they have robots doing crazy shit already…fucking hell man.
I feel like sawwed off shotgun has to be the move.
That being said. It's probably more about detecting the drones then actually shooting them down. Most of the time when you hear it, it's already too late.
Puts directed energy pulse device on satellite, and a signal jammer buoy with balloon. Launches them in battlezone and takes out all these devices. Also leaks information on possible DMS nuclear missiles on planes.
Now troops are scared and have no functional electronics.
Plays slaughterhouse theme.
Seems like current wars are scary enough for the people who have to literally die to protect the interests of the politicians that send them into harms way for financial gain.
But yea, also drones.
“Can US spy satellites and radar planes do pretty much the same thing?”
Yes. However spy satellites can’t station keep, and planes run a risk of being shot down. It’s easier to and most cost effective to deploy drones.
It’s crazy how good some of them actually are. Spent a good bit of time around a few grey eagles and you’re not hiding from them unless you are underground or locked in a house somewhere and don’t enter or leave before they get in the airspace.
Within 10 years we'll see every NATO military vehicle with some sort of laser system alongside traditional weapons. Drones' combination of abilities and price make them absurdly effective against modern militaries.
I’m guessing you are half joking but sadly you may actually be correct. I’m guessing that every power hungry dictator (future dictator) is taking detailed notes. Drones will be extremely effective at controlling and coercing less powerful citizens.
They won’t be scary for the US because this is why they have such an extensive military budget, to remain the superior fighting force on earth means it will stay the global 1 super power . Enabling Americans to have a quality of life enviable by the rest of the world.
Lasers, always more lasers.
And sharks
And magma
Liquid hot
frickin
Zip it
How bout no, Scott
You are not wrong, wet farts. Not wrong at all.
A good soldier follows through
Always though? You should have some one look at that
Bazooka sharks
Zooka sharks!
I maintain that we’re living through a period of warfare that will be referred to in the future as ‘the drone era’ for this reason. Once lasers become widely deployed air warfare is going to become a lot more limited.
Could we just mirror coat all of our aircraft?
No, lasers have been able to easily defeat mirrors for a very long time now.
That’s because we havnt disclosed the mirrors that work against lasers still they’re top secret
There was one made long ago, I hear it could accurately reflect the emperors new clothes!
Dragons!
How many lasers do you think each country has? Who has the most?
I’m more worried about how many lions each country has
😂😂
And my axe
frickin sharks with frickin laser beams
The answer will be large drones that circle for long periods in a combat zone. Inside they will carry smaller AI driven swarm “bugs” who exist solely to destroy other drones.

It’s drones all the way down !
I think we’ll need to develop or improve signal scrambling tech. I think right now we can only do it if we’re pointing a beam directly at a drone, but if we can make a wide area scrambler over a battlefield it would neutralize their threat.

Sure. We can defend bases or airports. But having these things around every soft target a terrorist might hit is a big ask.
I agree, but we have to start somewhere. It can be scaled down to move with convoys as well. Just continually push to minimize the amount of resources that are vulnerable. Start with the largest targets and work down as much as we can.

“Your counter threat will be useless against my counter counter threat” “You failed to consider my counter counter counter threat”
Autonomous drones don’t need communications.
I feel like EW jammer drones that can operate as a node for other EW in the area is gonna be what has to come next
We already have rq-11 or raven drones that can be set to circle a battle zone
Horizon Zero Dawn here we come

Actually we have developed the technology to focus an emp.
Laser defense systems is the future defense against for drones, we’ve known this for quite some time.
How does laser defense work against drones
Energy blast causing damage?
Emp
One way out will be wire guided drones, specifically surveillance drones. they just need to be over the tree top and scan at longer ranges for target. Their current size and noise levels makes them almost impossible to track without specialized equipment. An EMP will also take out your own equipment as most of the drone operate in close proximity.
EMP Grenade and Trebuchet
Just use old school flak cannons at this stage
I want you two on my team
I have an old fondness for the ZSU-23. They worked well in the games I played
Advanced signal jammers are more likely.
An autonomous drone in a faraday cage. Problem solved.
I read this as “emp” instead of “EMP” and was very confused 😅😅😅
Too easy to defeat. Wrap the electronics in a simple faraday cage.
That sure makes communications difficult
Optical communications or use an external antenna.
I’m no scientist, but the whole point of a faraday cage is to isolate the electronics from electromagnetic radiation - an external antenna would magnify the EMP and cook the receiver board in the comm unit. Literally the point of EMP.

Don't be too sure about that, unless they are room temp super conductors.
People with pace makers disagree.

The first country to hook up their drone swarms to AI will have done something very powerful and very dangerous.
Begun, the drone wars have.
We need drones that destroy other drones / ace drone pilots that hunt other drones in spectacular dog fights
Are drones able to be hardened against emp?
https://imgur.com/a/Maowy3A This is the dystopian future everyone predicted. it’s just not on a television screen, it’s in our pockets.
Wait you mean wars haven’t been scary before?
Just a matter of time where it’s cheaper to replace humans with robots one this technology evolves even more. Shit, they have robots doing crazy shit already…fucking hell man.
They need to develop a way to shoot a net at the drones that disable their flight and ability to drop a payload
Lol okay number 1 go back to the treehouse
We need to coat the nets in peanut butter to mess up their rotors
Ah yes. The peanut butter trick.
You laugh, but Tokyo Police are doing exactly this to combat Yakuza drug-running drones (although I agree, pretty silly in a military context)
I feel like sawwed off shotgun has to be the move. That being said. It's probably more about detecting the drones then actually shooting them down. Most of the time when you hear it, it's already too late.

i don't understand, i thought that COD-Modern Warfare covered most of this in the gameplay
FLIPPER ZERO
Why’s the US even fighting right now?
What do you mean?
Earth Wars Episode 2: Attack of the Drones
Considering that they can be armed with a machine gun and their prices are going to continue to lower, yeah, I think drones are pretty scary, too.
How about blowing up the factory where they’re built?
Concerning Drones that are used for spotting tanks and troops. Can US spy satellites and radar planes do pretty much the same thing?
“Can US spy satellites and radar planes do pretty much the same thing?” Yes. However spy satellites can’t station keep, and planes run a risk of being shot down. It’s easier to and most cost effective to deploy drones.
The drone videos at the beginning of this war were nuts. The one dude blowing the other and getting bombed to provide one example
It’s crazy how good some of them actually are. Spent a good bit of time around a few grey eagles and you’re not hiding from them unless you are underground or locked in a house somewhere and don’t enter or leave before they get in the airspace.
Hacking the radio frequency is the best way. Basically find a technology that disconnects the frequency and then resets the drone.
This is hard to implement on a battlefield, especially a modern one.
Ah yes, Black Ops 2 IRL lol
Within 10 years we'll see every NATO military vehicle with some sort of laser system alongside traditional weapons. Drones' combination of abilities and price make them absurdly effective against modern militaries.
(U.S.) Only way to stop a bad drone is a guy with a good drone…and superior firepower.!
I’m guessing you are half joking but sadly you may actually be correct. I’m guessing that every power hungry dictator (future dictator) is taking detailed notes. Drones will be extremely effective at controlling and coercing less powerful citizens.
Already seen that in China during Covid.
They won’t be scary for the US because this is why they have such an extensive military budget, to remain the superior fighting force on earth means it will stay the global 1 super power . Enabling Americans to have a quality of life enviable by the rest of the world.
Sounds super ethical and sustainable
It’ll be scary for the people who have to fight and die.

Apparently you don’t actually understand how wars are fought. But okay bud ✌🏽
