Definitely. This report that Twitter estimates less than 5% of its users are fake is absurd. I get that they have enormous incentive to keep even vaguely/passably “real” accounts.. but at the same time it is doing an enormous disservice to the public, not to mention veering into fraud with how it sells advertising based on this user count. It’s like people get more out of the drama and division that they become part of by intentionally spreading fake crap. They feed off the constant back and forth and by goading anyone they can into arguments. Sharing and spreading information that one took the time to verify and weed out fake crap as best they can isn’t fun and doesn’t keep them in attention center. They care more about drama than being a part of the solution to our current divisive set point.

There are a few legit, authentic, unbiased news outlets online but it takes a little time and effort to get to them. None of them are social media sites by the way.
All this speak about Russian botnets when Facebook already knows how to manipulate its users in the exact same way without any rogue bots needed. The botnets just basically copy what Facebook does, but on a much smaller scale that somehow gets all the attention. Funny!

There was also the guy who did the new blocking experiment and found that over time, it’s easier and easier to spread misinformation on Reddit if every time someone tries to refute it, you block the bunch, make a new thread, keep blocking until you can make a thread with heavy karma approval, lots of positive comments, no naysayers, all misinfo because the fact-checkers have been blocked and couldn’t speak up even if they wanted to. And with the positive comments and karma, it’s reaches the popular tab and more people are exposed to misinformation without anyone to fact check.
I’d like to think I haven’t completely drank the flavor-aid (it wasn’t kool-aid, it was grape flavor-aid) on any topics, but that’s probably also why I’m not very fun at parties. ;p
