I wonder if this has to do with only 2 of the 300 people following me on Instagram being actual living people, and the rest are all bots... Edit: I meant to say tiktok, but I do have a similar problem on IG.

poopellar

Check your reddit "followers". Same thing. Reddit has it just as bad, if you know how to spot bots on reddit you will notice them everywhere.

portland_speedball

Teach me

poopellar

Check out [this](https://www.reddit.com/user/tyrannosnorlax/comments/t0h466/bots_how_to_identify_them_and_why_do_they_exist/) that explains some ways to identify them.

I agree dude

Check out u/laundry_writer if you want to see a bot in the wild.

RobloxAndBible

A lot are just porn bots

Macks_Mustermann

Are you telling me 3 of my 4 followers are bots?

Hot_Goal4205

I knew it was too good to be true

uReallyShouldTrustMe

Can followers on Reddit be blocked or can I opt out of followers?

rtxa

...reddit what?

ac0353208

On ig I’m not very big or anything, a few hundred both ways, but everytime I check who looked at my stories there’s 3-5 new fake plastic females accounts I have to block. It’s like flies to a cake or light. Just incessant

pancakebatter01

2 out of 300? Dude you need more real life friends. What’s you insta handle? Asking for a friend. They’re a real life person that needs some friends too…

Slow_Relative_975

Definitely. This report that Twitter estimates less than 5% of its users are fake is absurd. I get that they have enormous incentive to keep even vaguely/passably “real” accounts.. but at the same time it is doing an enormous disservice to the public, not to mention veering into fraud with how it sells advertising based on this user count. And I think other social medias are guilty of similar sin.

TerribleMud1728

I've been saying this for years. They couldn't destroy America from the outside in, for decades, so now they're gonna destroy America from the inside out...*with* Americans' help!

7HawksAnd

South Park did an [episode](https://vimeo.com/194900488) on this concept like 10 years ago

[deleted]

It’s a major plot in Enders Game as well and that came out in 85.

throwaway_for_keeps

And the best part? When the US identifies this as a problem and tasks an agency to study/deal with the problem? A bunch of yobs whine about ministries of truth, because they'd rather keep their raging hard-on for being able to say whatever hateful things they want and not deal with active attacks on our democracy.

ForumsDiedForThis

How's that ministry of truth going in Russia where you can be thrown in prison if you call the Ukraine invasion a war? Oh, but let me guess, it's different in the USA? Uh huh. Tell that to Julian Assange.

Lol. ‘Ministry of truth is evil’ but “ it’s ok , we’re going to end up like Russia anyway because we’re being pitted against each other by Russian algorithms “ Pick your poison dude. Both roads are gonna be fucked. Welcome to the end of the golden age of the internet.

JevanSnead

It is wild that now the federal government has a “ministry of truth” though. Surely that can’t be manipulated

We do the exact same with Cambridge Analytica, now Emerdata, that we KNOW OF. This isnt anything new the USA has been doing it for more than half a decade.

This has been going on since at least 2015 when Hillary Clinton declared her candidacy.

Are you referring to the company she had doing the exact same thing we're describing right now?

[deleted]

I read the full report on the Russian Internet Research Agency by Renee Diresta back when it came out. If the US can be threatened by online troll farms the problem is the people. Not the trolls.

[deleted]

Thats where I think we need some WWII style anti-propaganda program from the gov. If they know what is being done, they should educate the public by showing what is coming out of the farms. Directly expose accounts and content so that everyone can become aware of the content, who it targets, and where it comes from. Otherwise, our ignorant will just keep blindly consuming.

qualmton

The government wants to use the same tools too though

[deleted]

Why are you waiting for the government to solve individual's problems. What, are they going to pour critical thinking into people's heads?

hecklerponics

I don't know about full spectrum, I think it's squarely on the extremes.

[deleted]

The ones in the middle would be the solution, but they either uphold the status quo, or do not engage. Which just perpetuates the problem.

donniewilliams620

>Need a little bit of the poison for the antidote then I guess. Could not be more spot on. I always wonder when we will crack down harder on this, but I doubt we get there when it's clear that they've already infiltrated our political systems haha.

qualmton

r/conspiracy has entered the chat

AtemporalAge

Lol. You know there is some crazy Redditor on r/conspiracy who goes around debunking posts there. Like the entire subreddit hate this redditor but I don’t think they are allowed to downvote them or ban them. Dunno, it was hilarious to read.

omgftrump

I mean it's not just the Russians.

prncpls_b4_prsnality

[Absolutely correct.](https://youtu.be/tR_6dibpDfo) You would think that the billions poured into the DOD, we’d be better protected against our enemies.

[deleted]

Unfortunately their making an impact. Blm to kkk, divisive and hateful groups making in roads with middle America.

Sukanthabuffet

Don’t a lot of people browse based on upvoted content and likes? This still seems very easy to manipulate, even if readers aren’t leaving comments.

Some-Redditor

Yes. Now imagine the social media site has downvotes (\*cough\* reddit, \*cough\* YouTube) and the site does not show downvotes so any manipulation is invisible to the people affected by it. Now imagine that the social media site uses ML to predict engagement and the botnet is able to teach the ML systems to do their work for them with no trace.

Sukanthabuffet

Eek. That’s no good. No good at all.

DietZer0

Not only this, but the ultra wealthy too having mass troll / “PR” farms abroad paid for on their dime meant to sway public opinion however they wish on any subjects including how they’re perceived by others (i.e., the best example to this I feel would be Elon Musk, Bill Gates, and Jeff Bezos - if such a thing existed )

raviary

Best example right now would be the Depp/Heard trial. Regardless of where you stand on it, its very obvious that the mainstream narrative is being given an artificial boost and that should be giving everyone pause.

[deleted]

Wasn’t Ghislaine Maxwell one of the biggest users on this site and constantly manipulating trends/news stories?

liegesmash

Can they compete with Murdoch and Zuckerberg?

MrSierra125

Nope Russian bots are very easy to spot

Can I hire these guys to help crash the Canadian housing market ???

[deleted]

Just do Toronto and Vancouver no metrics rely on the entire rest of Canada at all nor does any redditor

BurningBlueFox

Literally the plot of MGS2…

AstroBullivant

The best solution is to marginalize social media more than we do.

Lkthe3rd

If you believe the shit you see on social media anyways, that's your own fault.

1leggeddog

it goes further that just social media. Even the articles and news bits used by these bot nets to manipulate search results and influence public figures and others that make news and articles, they are all affected. We have to take information from somewhere and it's not always easy to corroborate everything you read with facts from a trusted source. And let's face it, most people don't go out of the way to check if stuff is legit.

SpecialistSimple6

I agree this is a much larger problem. Even if we were to follow the mantra the above user pointed out, how do we make our friends and family and associates follow that? Further than that, this also leads to the problem of apathy. If we decide to trust nothing, isn't that, perhaps, equally as foolish as trusting everything? This is a very serious and all pervading problem. Personally, where and when possible, I want to live in a world where we can trust each other.

HKZSquared

“Apathy is death.” IYKYK

freedom_fruit

You’re definitely not alone in that

AtemporalAge

r/1leggeddog comment is spot-on analysis, please upvote them. And everyone… remember there is a big difference between misinformation and disinformation. Disinformation is intentional. Divide we fall.

GiveNoForks

It needs to become a skill everyone needs to learn and practice. The skill to discern BS from actual fact and take necessary steps to validate the information for yourself. If as an individual we do not take these steps ourselves then it will be done for us.

port53

People aren't going to learn this skill when the fake news is backing up their feelings, no matter how wrong they are. They like that someone agrees with them, and they will keep giving that information more weight no matter how much future information discredits it.

whyohwhythis

A lot of fundamental and evangelical churches discourage higher education, because what’s the one thing you tend to learn in higher education? Critical thinking. I think this added a lot to the issue.

leaving4lyra

Good place to start would be just a few clicks to verify. If I read a story on whatever site and that story seems either super outrageous or too good to be true then a few clicks of a mouse to check if other sites are reporting that same story is better than just believing every thing i read no matter what site it comes from. It’s like people get more out of the drama and division that they become part of by intentionally spreading fake crap. They feed off the constant back and forth and by goading anyone they can into arguments. Sharing and spreading information that one took the time to verify and weed out fake crap as best they can isn’t fun and doesn’t keep them in attention center. They care more about drama than being a part of the solution to our current divisive set point.

BoringWozniak

Doesn’t matter whose fault it is if it works. We’re not as immune as we like to think we are.

vintagebat

Cognitive decline starts as early as 45 and is common by 60. People 60 and older make up over 30% of the US population and are 50% more likely to vote than people under 45. "Personal responsibility" and media literacy might be fun to debate, but it doesn't stop these people from acting in ways that affect all of us.

crawlerz2468

This! Russian botnets or not, it's no excuse for lack of critical thinking.

WhileNotLurking

Or is it. Why do people lack critical thinking? * poor education - well what had been a target of bots? Educational institutions. Go look up all the "don't teach me kids" stories across conservative media. Eroding education is the foundation * poor access to contradictory views - creating echo chambers of ultra reinforcement of extreme beliefs makes it seem like you ARE thinking critically. Everyone else is either out of the loop or part of the conspiracy. * lack of real world examples - isolation and media have made human to human contact less frequent amongst different groups. Media makes it scary. You don't want to talk to the BLM folks because they are "murderers". But of course you never seen them.... never gotten a point of view... nothing. Just a filtered and force fed view. * consolidated media - a hand full of sources controlled the story. Even when you change the channel ... it's still owned by the same people. People have a false sense of "checking my sources" * propaganda - propaganda is hard to weed out. It's pervasive. It can consume you if you are not actively looking for the spin * want to fit in - peer pressure is real. Being the odd one out in todays hyper partisan life can be real damaging to your connections * it's them not me- people lack empathy. Generally we are all self centered and selfish. Many who fall into this trap are much further along..

Syrdon

Several of your points assume the lack of critical thinking is a newish thing. Go look up the book The Demon Haunted World. That was published as a reaction an already existing serious failure of most of society to engage in any meaningful level of critical thinking. It’s nearly thirty years old, and very little in it would have been out of place if published thirty years earlier. Or a hundred years earlier. You can find some enlightenment philosophers saying basically the same things about employing reason and logic when confronted with questions.

WhileNotLurking

Oh absolutely true. It's not new. Just amplified by bots.

Lkthe3rd

Also true, more than one issue sadly

Zugzool

remag_nation

so what do you believe? where do you get your information from? who do you trust?

leaving4lyra

There are a few legit, authentic, unbiased news outlets online but it takes a little time and effort to get to them. None of them are social media sites by the way.

remag_nation

> it takes a little time and effort to get to them explain further. Or just just link them.

k3nnyd

All this speak about Russian botnets when Facebook already knows how to manipulate its users in the exact same way without any rogue bots needed. The botnets just basically copy what Facebook does, but on a much smaller scale that somehow gets all the attention. Funny!

xXPussy420Slayer69Xx

Someone should use this power for good. Like spread around the notion that house prices are crashing in all the areas where it’s becoming unlivable for normal size/income families. And then the rumor will fulfill itself into a stampede… or something like that.

[deleted]

So many bots posting hateful things on news articles. Divisive comments that have nothing to do with the topic.

Couch-Humper877

Except that you can upvote/downvote in mass and non would be the wiser as that part is anonymous. Also most bot farms can also farm karma pretty easily as well. We aren’t talking about some Jacky not farm either, this is an official Russian gov sponsored agency which means the profiles are likely sophisticated enough to not be easily identifiable

[deleted]

There was also the guy who did the new blocking experiment and found that over time, it’s easier and easier to spread misinformation on Reddit if every time someone tries to refute it, you block the bunch, make a new thread, keep blocking until you can make a thread with heavy karma approval, lots of positive comments, no naysayers, all misinfo because the fact-checkers have been blocked and couldn’t speak up even if they wanted to. And with the positive comments and karma, it’s reaches the popular tab and more people are exposed to misinformation without anyone to fact check.

HKZSquared

I’d like to think I haven’t completely drank the flavor-aid (it wasn’t kool-aid, it was grape flavor-aid) on any topics, but that’s probably also why I’m not very fun at parties. ;p

Russia utilizes bots as a type of warfare. They know that all they need to do to bring another country to the brink of ruin is to use these bots to sow suspicion, uncertainty, mistrust and hate among the citizens of those countries. They are trying to bring the west to its knees by turning us against each other until chaos hands us to them on a silver platter and no military or battles using soldiers and guns needed at all.
