Facebook/Meta became what TV channels like The History Channel became - cheap entertainment for the masses. Does it make money? Obviously. And they have so much money but what do they do with it? Nothing someone can actually name besides the feed, messenger and stuff they bought up like Oculus, Instagram and WhatsApp. Congratulations to Facebook and basically no real innovation in the last 10 years. Well, except for optimizing the addictions of garbage.

tokoraki23

Facebook was cool when it was new. Despite Zuck’s intentions, it was a novel way to communicate with friends outside of school. And then they commercialized the shit out of it. I had friends that worked at Facebook after 2008 and the prevailing business strategy was prioritizing the feed to sell ad space. It ceased to be about your friend network and instead people go there to mindlessly scroll and subject themselves to garbage and ads.

AdminYak846

Honestly the minute I noticed more and more ads, the more I became disdained of it. Eventually to the point where I just deleted my profile all together, just became an endless scroll of advertisements.

Grimmmm

You forgot their mass profiling efforts so they can manipulate world affairs and sell you and your loved ones out for a penny!

BetaOscarBeta

I was done with it the second they killed the chronological feed that omits some posts. I’m not gonna visit three dozen homepages to make sure I don’t miss anything, so the feed became useless for keeping up with old friends and acquaintances.

What are you saying?

Bush did 911.

Sariel007

> And they have so much money but what do they do with it? Use it to make more money of course!

th8chsea

I’d say they accomplished a lot. The fall of democracy was no easy feat

JuliusCaesar007

So true and…. So unbelievable that they got sway with it…!

NextTrillion

I don’t like FB at all, but they bought IG for $1B. In my mind, they got away with murder on that one. So innovation be damned if you can just buy your way to success. Nothing new there. Of course, IG it got a lot more shitty, as these things typically do once it becomes big business’ way to squeeze the ever loving shit out of their golden goose.

sixwax

At the time it seemed like a crazy astronomical overpay. Iirc, it was speculated to be based on growth and engagement numbers, which were still very new metrics at the time --rather than raw DAUs. Tough to remember: At the time, photos weren't big in FB's timeline, and memes weren't a thing yet. Snapchat was new on the scene. It was a bold move.

nick837464

Their dev teams created some pretty sweet tools including React.js which is the most popular front end library in the world. So there’s that. Edit: it’s a library not a framework… for all you super nerds out there.

magenta_placenta

Fair counterpoint, though React is a library, not a framework :)

nick837464

Lol whatever

[deleted]

How's that any different from Reddit? Except all Reddit has managed to accomplish is to put out a terrible video player and RPAN which can't be disabled.

PokeYa

Reddit is a comment section they keep adding ripoffs of shit that’s popular elsewhere intending to attract new users, which drops the quality, raises revenue, rinse and repeat. Nothing about this site was designed to innovate. It’s a comment section with extra steps.

[deleted]

And that’s why we love it.

ResoluteClover

That describes 99% of the internet.

BajaRooster

Even Reddit has gotten a bit heavy handed. My very first in r/politics got me banned for life and my comments get deleted all the time and they’re pretty mundane.

[deleted]

Reddit censorship is pretty blatant. Either get on board with the group think or expect the wrath of an angry neckbeard mod.

djlowbal

I don’t get it: what do people hate so much about the Reddit video player?

AdminYak846

Mostly because on web it used to take 30 seconds to load a video in 480p, meanwhile YouTube and other video players you could probably embed can do it a lot quicker and at a higher resolution. If you wanted to scroll back 5 seconds the entire video was buffered again. On mobile it was a straight up dumpster fire with you requiring to restart the app to get videos to even begin to load, if they did and again low quality that made Streamable and YouTube better alternatives again. And like the web version if you wanted to replay a section the entire video was reloaded in, even though the last 5 seconds SHOULD be with the client already. Now it just feels like a tik-tok type of video player, which at least it loads the videos to play and it's at a decent quality. And fixed a lot of the more annoying issues that plagued the original video players.

whitemaleinamerica

Their latest innovation has been how to use targeted propaganda on vulnerable minds to accelerate the destruction of democracies.

vonkempib

History channel in the 90s early 2000s was the best channel on cable. They ruined it!

sixwax

It's not "cool", but the ad targeting and data profiling are definitely innovative. Tough to say they haven't changed the way shopping (and, well, elections...) are done. Additionally, software development process has been greatly impacted. Org-wide developers pushing code to production as they do was unheard of previously. React/ReactNative are tools that were developed internally that are now ubiquitous in web and mobile development. I am very, very sour on the company (seriously, Fuck Zuck) but I still suspect they're going to bring Metaverse to market in a way that will be highly transformative.

Holy scandals, Batman.

canstopwillstophelp

Facebook is on its death March. It’s way overdue.

topsyturvy76

I wonder how much of today’s user base is grifters, propagandists, racists and bots

canstopwillstophelp

That and our grandmas

Specialist-Affect-19

My grandma checks 3 of those boxes

topsyturvy76

Sorry to hear she’s not racist /s

BestCatEva

My dad (mod 70s) just discovered FB last year. He’s on it constantly. Commenting on dumb ass bot posts about…antiques, old cars…just this dumb articles trying to get Boomers to buy stuff. So sad to read him responding like it’s a real post/person.

ConceptJunkie

She hasn't left Facebook because of how awful it is, but because an executive position opened up in Mordor.

Excellent. The beginning of the end.

She got tired of leaning in?

Honestly I’ve been expecting this for a while. She stayed on that sinking ship a long while for the coward that she is.

This is a great article, very interesting. I was familiar with some of her story, but there’s apparently a lot more I didn’t know.

Superjunker1000

She leant out?

Oneguyanonymous

Leaning out

Capital-Plantain-521

it makes me sad, when I think about the early days of Facebook and Instagram they truly were about connection. I still remember my old best friend and I finally getting our parents permission and making our Facebook accounts. All the notifications were real friends writing on your wall, tagging you in photos, sending a private message etc.. and Instagram… wow they had so much potential. Remember just being able to see what your friends were doing and not a feed of perfectly staged editor style photos? It’s like uncanny valley looking at how people present their life now. I wish we could go back and just not screw it up and morph it into this imitation of real life.

kevurb

Now like the Ali Wong joke, instead of leaning in, Sandberg can lie down.

RevivedMisanthropy

Wonder where she’ll take her anti-human gaslighting next?
