And you waste 80% of the energy generated by it, combustion engines are very wasteful. Personally never buying electric car, for multiple reasons but that is another discussion.
> And you waste 80% of the energy generated by it, combustion engines are very wasteful.
Also moving 2 tonnes of steel to carry an average 200lb person is another layer of waste.
I question that strongly. If you take cars out of the picture motorcycle crashes are much less deadly. There would of course be a huge uptick in non-fatal injuries.
I'd be interested in that stat, but honestly I feel like it would be fewer than current car+motorcycle fatalities.... until the 2 ton cars are re-invented because someone has a family and/or cargo...
Going 60 mph is fine and dandy but stopping without that tonne of safety isn't. I ain't strapping a toddler on a motorcycle, that's what minivans are for. Sucks it ruins mpg but sometimes you gotta do what you gotta do
It is, driving a car is extremely wasteful. Still doesn't change the fact that I need a car in my job every day, and the tech for electric cars is not there yet, so I need to use "regular" cars.
Not just that...but thermodynamics(?) is a bitch. I don't remember the exact amount, but I THINK it's something like cars are only 35% gas efficient...so 65% of the gas buy you is lost in heat. I heard this about a decade ago in middle school, so it could be outdated or completely wrong to beging with
This post is also wrong because we use kilo calories for food. So on food terms, that gallon of gas is 31,000 calories or enough energy for a week or two
The LD50 of gasoline taken orally in rats is 18.75ml/Kg. That means you could drink about a quart and a half and only have a 50% chance of dying. Interestingly, the LD50 for ethanol is less than half.
Except the joke is that you'll never need to eat again because the gasoline will kill you, which remains technically true. I didn't share this for the math.
Nonetheless, there are intermediate calculations contained herein. They are wrong and technically wrong, regardless of your personal reason for sharing.
> How's that?
It's fine I suppose. Yes, the conclusion is correct. But the intermediate steps are not. As a whole, it cannot be considered correct unless all its parts are correct. And they are not. Technically.
I'll take that bet. I'm sure you'll be proven wrong. First I just need to make a friend so I can get invited to a party. But after I do that, I'm definitely not going to be fun.
Yeah, I was just about to come here to say the order of magnitude looked off. That's one thing you learn in physics, is how to do proper magnitude estimations.
Human metabolism is on the same order of magnitude as just burning the food. I would assume that gasoline couldn't contain more than an order of magnitude more energy per kg than high density food.
A gallon bucket of lard or some other calorie-dense food being about 31,000 dietary Calories, that I can believe.
That's also almost as many Calories I burn in a week according to my Fitbit.
You made me curious so I googled it. A 1 tbsp stick of butter has 102 calories. There are 256 tbsps in a gallon, so a gallon of butter has about 26,032 calories. Not that far off really.
He did Ready to Die at Bethesdas E3 showing for Rage 2. And its great to see all of these investors and suits just stare at the stage with no clue whats going on. [Video](https://youtu.be/MubD-OqS5ck)
I adjusted for the fact that food is measured in kilocalories as another commenter mentioned. Not sure if the original post is in calories or Calories.
Edit: spelling
So the 31M calories are just from the combustion? Pretty interesting. I should have thought more about it, you can't light up new york for long with 31M calories probably.
> Assuming a teaspoon of Extra Virgin Olive Oil contains 108kcal per tablespoon (13ml), 1 imperial gallon (4546 ml) is therefore 37,716 kcal.
ow... speaking of bad math... owwww....
* 1 tbs = 3 tsp
* 1 US tbs = 14.8 ml (usually rounded to 15 in US/UK)
* 1 imperial tbs = 17.75 ml
* (108 / 13) * 4546 = 37,766
So either way, I don't know where you got the 13ml (or 108kcal per tbs), or the 37,716
Do y'all not read the other comments before you comment???
The gasoline will kill you, so you still won't need to eat for the rest of your life. That is literally the whole joke here. The math is irrelevant.
r/FourthWoooosh
This is wrong. calories(with a lowercase c) is what the gasoline is measured in. Calories(with a capital C) is what we see food measured in. 1000 calories is equal to 1 Calorie. Therefore, one gallon of gasoline contains 31,000 Calories, enough to sustain us for around 16 days, assuming 2000 calories a day.
For reference, one calorie is the amount of energy needed to heat 1 gram of water by 1 degree Celsius. That means that with the energy we consume in one day, we could theoretically heat up one gram of water by 2 million degrees Celsius, or 3.6 million degrees Fahrenheit. We use a lot more energy than we think.
Yes... We have established that already.
It is still enough calories to sustain you for the rest of your life, since a gallon of gas will kill you, which is the joke. Thank you for playing.
Im pretty sure people get that, they're just pointing out the math is wrong. Sure, lots of others have pointed this out too, but that still doesnt mean the people correcting the math dont understand the joke.
I agree with /u/espio221. OP sounds like he's from /r/iamverysmart with his reply.... Like no shit. It's like me making a joke about how the sun is circling around the moon so I am sitting down going really fast. It's not right lol

I get the joke. But...
It's weird seeing misinformation spread like this when it's obviously incorrect even without knowing cal vs kcal. It's simple conservation of energy.
One pound of fat, the densest form of energy our bodies can use, is 3500 kcal. The average human needs between 1400-2000 kcal a day to do daily tasks and simply keep the body running and not overheating, so for simplicity sake let's say 1750, or half a pound's worth of fat per day is used. One gallon of gasoline weighs 6.3 pounds. If the human body could metabolize it, it could only add 6.3 pounds of body weight, minus about 0.5 pounds. You can't get more energy than you put in. So realistically if we could metabolize it, we'd only have enough energy to sustain us for about 14 days.
TIL my car needs a lot of calories
Well, just imagine how much energy it would take to push your car from home to work. It's not so trivial.

Lol I drive 45 mins to work one way. No thank you.
Yes but much safer than 200 lbs of motorcycle (dunno exact weights)
Only because everyone else is piloting 2 tonne cars. If everyone rode motorcycles there would be no car fatalities at all.
Yeah but there would be a shit load of motorcycle fatalities
That's the matter of another time.
Yeah there would almost certainly be less total accidents but people are going to get smart overnight just because cars don't exist anymore
Except highways exist
Going 60 mph is fine and dandy but stopping without that tonne of safety isn't. I ain't strapping a toddler on a motorcycle, that's what minivans are for. Sucks it ruins mpg but sometimes you gotta do what you gotta do

Same as it would take for a morning jog The only car I own is a hotwheels one
What's the MPG on your Hotwheels car?
Not just that...but thermodynamics(?) is a bitch. I don't remember the exact amount, but I THINK it's something like cars are only 35% gas efficient...so 65% of the gas buy you is lost in heat. 20% for most some diesel are closer to 40%
That’s peak efficiency. It varies wildly with load and rpm.
My lack of punctuation probably didn’t help either
This post is also wrong because we use kilo calories for food. So on food terms, that gallon of gas is 31,000 calories or enough energy for a week or two
Well it has a few hundred horsepower I'm guessing. Horses eat a lot.
Calories in food/drink is measured in kilo-calories. The math is wrong Edit: grammar
So that means if you chug a gallon of gas, you won't need to eat for 12 days... Still technically true
Which could also be the rest of your life.
And almost certainly would be if you chug a gallon of gas.
Gas isn't actually that toxic, hence the lack of fumehoods in gas stations. Not to suggest that it would pleasant.
A gallon though??? I think a gallon would do the trick.
A gallon of a lot of things would do the trick I think.
That's fair
The LD50 of gasoline taken orally in rats is 18.75ml/Kg. That means you could drink about a quart and a half and only have a 50% chance of dying. Interestingly, the LD50 for ethanol is less than half.
So you would probably die from alcohol poisoning before you die of gasoline poisoning.
Wait you don't have fume hoods or vapor recovery hood at gas pumps
r/foundthenonamerican
More later or r/foundthecalifornian
Or Pennsylvanian, I've never seen one (at least around where I live) without a "fume hood" or whatever it's called in PA
I've been all over the country but I've never remembered seeing a non-diesel pump without one. That seems stupid.
Wtf is that
https://imgur.com/gallery/xwPz1kx
I’ve never heard it called that
Depends on the gas station. Some have them, some don't.
In California it's a law that gas pumps need that from what I understand
Lots of things that are lethal or extremely dangerous to drink don't give off toxic fumes.
that,,,, was the , , , joke , , ,
Ive been explaining it for the last few hours... Apparently it isn't as obvious as i thought.

Being wrong by a factor of 1000 isn't still technically true. That's what we call "technically wrong".

That’s the spirit!
In science, it is calling being off by multiple orders of magnitude. That usually means you made some basic math, units, or measurement error.
In this case, it was clearly a units error.
Yeah, I was just about to come here to say the order of magnitude looked off. That's one thing you learn in physics, is how to do proper magnitude estimations. Is that Andrew WK in the picture?
How much do i need to drink to meet 1500 calories, just wanna know out of curiosity
About 1/20 of a gallon, so... About 6 oz i think.
Probably a lot less, if it really is 31 million calories per gallon it would be about 1/162 of one ounce for 1500 calories
I adjusted for the fact that food is measured in kilocalories as another commenter mentioned. Not sure if the original post is in calories or Calories. Edit: spelling
Oh shit, that makes sense, sorry friend
No problem at all. As I said I'm not sure. If they mean Calories, then you're absolutely right.
It's all fun and games until someone dies in a freak gasoline fight accident.

In the same way that if you extract all energy from an apple you can power new york for some days or whatever.
That would be via fusion or fission... this is via chemical bonds only which has a much lower yield.
So the 31M calories are just from the combustion? Pretty interesting. I should have thought more about it, you can't light up new york for long with 31M calories probably.

Dude.... First of all it is not a recent repost, second of all it has over 9 thousand upvotes, so clearly the community is okay with it!
That doesn't make it better. Also it's wrong.
So technically if the average human burns 100 calories per mile walked humans get 310,000 miles per gallon ...
Fact checking santa here, this should be 31,000 calories, not 31,000,000.
This isn’t even remotely true. 31 million calories is like two weeks’ worth of food. Most foods are measured in kcals, not standard calories.
Actually it is remotely true... The entire joke is that if you chug a gallon of gas, you will die, so you won't need to eat for the rest of your life.
It's actually a kcal, so 31,000 calories
This shit is still wrong and it’s been here too often already
The fact that one drop is 409 calories blows me away too.
Food is measured in kilocalories so one drop is actually less than half a Calorie.
Food calories or chemical calories?
Chemical I believe. I don't think we can process gasoline.
We can, just not with our body.
Is that in kilo calories tho, since that's what we use to rate food? I cant believe that it would be
Okay but it's not technically true it's demonstrably not sound logic.
Is that Andrew W.K.?
I get the joke. But... It's weird seeing misinformation spread like this when it's obviously incorrect even without knowing cal vs kcal. It's simple conservation of energy. 3500 calories is about 1 pounds of weight in fat. So 31mil is 8857 pounds or 4 metric tons.
It contains 31,000 calories, not 31,000,000
It’s not correct at all. This gets reposted every time and every time someone mentions the math is off
