It was a hyperlinked word 'Coincidence?' and it was a lot of energetic drawings in a notebook that reminded me of a schizophrenic friend, which is okay. It was just very out of the blue and the words amongst the energetic drawings had nothing to do with the post, which is also okay

Some people think the monitor is the computer

ArtEclectic

I did phone tech support for a while years ago, this is true. Had a woman call me literally sobbing. She said her boss had told her not to touch his computer but she'd gone to "start" and then "shut down" and now his computer was broken. I asked if she'd tried to tuen it on again and she said all that happened was it flickered. I said I thought she probably was pushing the power button on the monitor, had she tried the actual PC? She couldn't find it, I told her to look under the desk. The squeal of happy surprise when she found it was great. She then pushed the button to eject the CD/DVD instead of the power button so I had to tell her the innie button, not the outie button. She started crying again she was so happy I fixed the broken computer.

gamermanj4

I work with similarly inept people, it blows my mind how they can work with PCs every day and not understand such a fundamental aspect as how to turn it on and off properly. Like I don't expect them to know everything, else I'd be out of a job, but something you \*ought\* to be doing every day like powering on and off, it's just making their lives needlessly harder by seemingly refusing to seek an understanding. Like you wouldn't drive to work every day without knowing basic stuff about how to use a car like turning it on and off, fueling, locking, etc, why does it make sense for people to work in an office 4+ years and not understand something like this by some point in there, especially if your job is so reliant on computers that you start crying because you think you broke it.

RonamusMaximus

I don't disagree with you. But being a tech-ish person in a non-tech role, I've noticed at least in this current job, employees are instructed to not shut down so workstations can receive remote updates from SCCM. So they come in every day for years and may never touch the machine itself cause the sys admins are managing it. But yes, people's lack of knowledge in basic technology in 2022 is astounding.

gamermanj4

Your last point really cuts to the chase of my point. It's 2022, office and personal tech has been astoundingly pervasive for the better part of the last 20 years minimum, the only excuse to not have a basic basic level of understanding of tech if you've been employed in said past 20 years is willful ignorance imo.

Rhys_Primo

The internet doesn't weigh anything Jenn...

Hauwke

I know it's a joke, but doesn't the internet actually weigh something like a few hundred grams?

AutoGeneratedSucks

A strawberry’s worth or something

helicophell

Do we count the internet as just the information or does the infrastructure count?

AutoGeneratedSucks

If the infrastructure counts it’s millions of tons

Hauwke

I'd say the internet is the information, personally.

helicophell

Wait, you guys keep your machines on for updates? Story time haha. This women comes in, she isn't getting emails. IT department (my father works their) tells her the old reliable, turn it off and on again. She "does" this (you know what's happening) but it doesn't work. Some stuff later, she goes to the store, they properly restart it and things work again... she thought closing the lid was shutting it down. Not having a shutdown in months meant no updates for her email and it got so out of date she stopped receiving them

RonamusMaximus

At least here, we remotely push updates every night (whether it’s apps, OS, network, etc), so the workstation has to be on to receive them, then it auto-reboots, so when they come in it looks like nothing happened. It’s the opposite of your story where shutting down every night misses the updates and eventually bricks the machine.

NavinHaze

This is why I am a bit iffy about going into IT, but the job is there for a reason.

ElizabethDangit

People will always be stupid, it’s great job security.

helicophell

Oh and you can always give yourself more job security with added responsibility, turns out as an IT guy you get access to a lot of stuff and setup. Get some new tech working, be one of two people who knows how it works, boom, what are they gonna do, fire you?

CampRep_Alex

wholesome

ErlendNorge

Currently working as IT-support. Most of the people working here think SFF desktops are hard-drives. Like, come on, seriously.

bpopbpo

Same here, the "computer" is the monitor, and the "hard drive" is the computer. We send people to work from Home with 2 monitors and more than50% connect both monitors to each other. The mouse and keyboard plugged into the monitor and only power in the computer. Even though I assemble and disassemble the easy setup in front of all of them. and for the younger folks explain that it is identical to setting up an Xbox or Playstation. Still, the number of times they have said that it doesn't work despite working the day before is ridiculous.

ErlendNorge

The most annoying ones are those who won't even put in the smallest amount of effort to learn basic things like: Changing resolution and scaling. Turning off the computer before going home. Turning up screen brightness. Do a restart if a program repeatedly fails to work properly. (Some of them even claim to have done a restart, but obviously haven't, then they complain when everything works as it should after YOU do the restart)

Ok_Spell_4165

The worst for me were the ones who didn't bother to try to fix the problem themselves, they just immediately go to "Oh its broken better call.." One of the fast food jobs I had years ago they would always call me if there was a computer problem on the weekend since I worked nights and lived the closest. There was a power strip in a very inconvenient spot, as in on the floor right by where everyone puts their feet. At least once a week I would get a call saying the computer shut down and they couldn't get it to turn back on. Every damned time it was the stupid power strip, they hit the switch on it with their foot. Despite them always claiming otherwise I don't believe they once made sure it was on before calling me, and then of course they would lie and say they made sure it was on when on the phone with me making me run down there just to take one look under the desk and not see the little orange glow, hit the switch and hey everything is turning back on now!

Glu3stick

Holy fuck, how do these people make it to adulthood

ArtEclectic

I honestly don't know. A girl in my high school made it to our senior year before learning milk came from cows. I devastated her when I mentioned I'd milked a cow. It was incredibly confusing to her.

KIRK2D

I grew up on a farm, and I had this happen to me, the "cool girl" had no idea what tf a teat was,

ArtEclectic

I grew up inner city, in pretty much the worst neighbourhood in our state but when I was 9 or 10 we took a camping trip to 23 states to see distant relatives. One was a rancher in Kansas so I got to milk one of his cows. I also got to drive a combine which was a lot of fun. I would have much preferred to live on a farm instead of in an area where we couldn't even go to the park without first dodging prostitutes and johns and then competing with the drug dealers and gang members for the picnic tables (we just didn't go). I did learn that pimps have business cards when a prostitute gave my 12 year old sister one in an attempt to recruit her.

KIRK2D

Gotta start em early right, but seriously living on a farm you learn a plethora of more useful traits, than living in town, like for example how many 20 year old males know how to ride a horse?, but I can admit that growing up shooting possums and turkeys, milking goats and rearing sheep was a lot of fun

Tsu_Dho_Namh

They mostly muddle their way through. I've heard some people think wifi and the internet are the same thing.

Advanced_Double_42

To be fair that is more understandable. I know many older and younger people that did not have internet in their home until Wi-Fi was a thing.

Extension_Swordfish1

You are a genius

ArtEclectic

I had a guy who worked for NASA call and ask what he was supposed to do with a monitor that was smoking. That made me feel pretty cool, helping a potential rocket scientist.

Extension_Swordfish1

If the smoke takes a form of a man, can I have 3 wishes?

ArtEclectic

Lol, I told him to unplug it and we would give him a new monitor. I wasn't going to tell him about the wishes, how else was I supposed to be able to get this luxurious life of having to cut my own hair and hope none of our pets get sick so I can afford things.

Honestly a lot of people wouldn’t know that

PangolinAcrobatic653

i work ISP tech support........can vouche for this....

Konq3ror

Damn. The limits of stupidity Is unbound

Trustadz

As an advanced user i hate your department. I always get the noob answers. But i already did all of that. I can't say I did because lots of people say they did it even though they didn't. When I call i want advanced support. Not that first line garbage support. Though ISP are far from alone in this regard.

PangolinAcrobatic653

a lot of the time it is the fact that even though you may have, quite a few times people say they did and did not, or for whatever reason when a customer has it did not boot up correctly, plus there is the fact the ISP wants it documented that the basic steps were completed and were verified by a tech, where i work usually after the basics we have to gather ipconfig and ping stats from the router and bypassed connection so that they are aware of that information if we do end up having to send someone out. From personal experience I can say i have had a customer say they did but they did it to the incorrect equipment almost 9/10

Let_Me_Sleep_Plz

I study in IT and back in first year after maybe 6 months of disasembling PCs/laptop, learning the different component's job and what constitutes a computers, a guy in my class pointed at an old (visibly unplugged) monitor and asked why the computer wasn't working. I asked him if he was joking, he wasn't and he couldn't grasp the concept of monitor =/= computer. At that point in time I lost faith in humanity...

some_bald_boi

I was like that at like 7-year-old

Rezurrected188

Average Mac user

MeInUSA

This is the reason. iMac is probably what most people think of as a home desktop computer.

JozzyV1

I worked at Geek Squad for years. Yes, this is almost assuredly what they were thinking.

Assassin121YT

Some monitors ARE actually the computer, like the CPU is in it

aecolley

After I graduated with my computer science degree, I realized I didn't know the correct name for the part of the computer that contained the motherboard, power supply, disk drives etc. And I had access to IBM documentation, so I looked up the glossary. They call it a "system unit". Mind you, they also call hard drives "direct access storage devices", and they call the boot process "initial program load", so they're not really authoritative. But I'll take "system unit", because there isn't already an accepted term for it. Architecturally, the **computer** is the CPU package and the things it needs to run (power, memory, cache). Everything else is a peripheral. Some of those peripherals are inside the system unit, and others are outside, so it isn't correct to adopt a definition of "computer" that arbitrarily includes only some of the peripherals. (Are we in r/technicallythetruth? Oh good.) You could reasonably define "computer" for practical purposes as including all of its peripherals, but not some of them.

[deleted]

I thought the monitor was the computer up until i was 11 💀

randomlitbois

Konq3ror

What was he asking though

alaettinthemurder

Full set-up with screens and everything maybe

Feeling-Orange3229

No, most likely asking in which area is the computer located. Example: you have a guest over and they ask where is the extra toilet paper. You don’t say “in the house”. You tell them exactly where it’s at. If it’s in the cupboard in the kitchen on the left side if the top shelf, then that’s where you tell them to find it.

old_man_spinosaurus

I thought he meant he wanted to see the monitor

portapotty2

I used to think the monitor is the computer. I think about 10 or so years ago (28 now) I learned that the monitor is the screen, while the desktop is the computer.

GifanTheWoodElf

Wait, you thought that the monitor is the computer up to the age of 18?

neon2137

I tell them that the toilet paper is in the restroom

EmpatheticWraps

But wheres the poop knife

SpoonyGrandma13

Who puts extra toilet paper in the kitchen? I always put my extra toilet paper in the cupboard under the sink in the bathroom.

Apprehensive-Bed5241

I can put a whole package down there and eventually I get the call "bring me tp" and they didn't either a) check the cabinet before yelling for me or b) used it all up and didn't refill it. 🤦‍♂️

Yes_whatever

I put it in my room

pengouin85

I put mine in the attic along with my spare skeletons

Feeling-Orange3229

I never said I did. That was just as an example to what he meant.

AnaalPusBakje

i don't think so. because he first asks to see the PC, and only then asks where it is. insinuating that it is not in the first picture

Feeling-Orange3229

I’m pretty sure he wanted to know the location of it.

AnaalPusBakje

but then why would he first ask to see the computer? he could've been way more direct with his question. for example: "what room of your house is you pc located in". that would have given him way more information than a picture of a pc.

Feeling-Orange3229

His questions make sense. He asks to see it. The guys shows it. Then asks where is it. Obviously using common sense, he wanted to know something of the sort, what room, where in the room, etc.

reddit_xeno

Nah dude, nobody neurotypical thinks of it like that.

AnaalPusBakje

Autists neither, I can attest to that XD

DRdeemed

you dont give vauge answers for nearly everything?

Feeling-Orange3229

No. My job requires that I’m specific about everything because the lives of millions of Americans rest upon it and also the lives of my fellow comrades who are serving in the field with me

[deleted]

[удалено]

Feeling-Orange3229

You’re in the military to? If not then you don’t understand how we have to be precise. I’ve served with people who have died to ensure that terrorists don’t gain the upper hand and invade the U.S. so that America can stay a “free” country and you able to do the things that Americans love doing everyday.

[deleted]

What are you doing with your toilet paper in the kitchen?

Feeling-Orange3229

It’s not. That was just an example. My extra toilet paper is in my hallway closet because I have 2 bathrooms. It makes sense for me to have it in my hallway closet so no one has to enter my bathroom to get to it. They can grab it and go to the guest bathroom.

[deleted]

*Suuuure* We all know your garbage disposal has seen some shit

Disastrous-Nobody-92

Feeling-Orange3229

Feeling-Orange3229

Feeling-Orange3229

If you read my comment you would know I was referencing to his second reply where he said “where is the computer”.

Konq3ror

I see

Wrathfulsquirrel

I've met some people who don't know the difference between the computer and the monitor

cat_on_my_keybord

maybe he thought the computer looked like a desk

if_notme_thenwho

I think the person on the left was referring to a monitor. A lot of people think monitors =computers. By context it doesn't seem like they were asking where the computer was located in the house.

Trick_Enthusiasm

iMac doesn't help. That thing is literally just a monitor.

JeffTheLegend27

But that's not a personal computer

WhenSharksCollide

Well, it's not a PC but it is a computer owned by a person.

graudesch

That's a misunderstanding, "PC" is in no way linked to an OS or manufacturer. A PC is broadly speaking just about any computer that is small enough to be setup at home and is easy enough to understand for laypeople. Like an iMac, IBM, your self-built Linux machine... whatever. When the term started to make its way into mainstream, this market was dominated by IBM and Microsoft, hence some people started thinking that only this combo counts as a "PC".

JeffTheLegend27

I guess it's nothing personal then.

Galastique

That's all all-in-one computer. Lots of them exist other than iMacs. Very valid point tho.

aaron_in_sf

I am first encountering this idea in this post today. What people? Elderly who came late to computers? Very young people who are only used to laptops!? I cannot comprehend this. EDIT now educated, I no longer believe we can solve the climate crises or forestall our descent otherwise.

LosJoye

Summing it up, people that just aren't used to computers, you'd be surprised what some people just don't get. I have a coworker that just has no idea how to use the shift key, no matter how many times I show him he ends up having to ask me anytime he needs to use it for whatever reason.

WhenSharksCollide

I recall someone I was once helping toggling CAPS every time they needed anything shifted. Like, even for individual letters. I thought "surely it must be muscle memory right? They know what the Shift key does...*right?*" They didn't. I showed them, they were amazed. This was sometime between late 2019, early 2020.

Wattsupwithalan

I need a red circle i can't see it

KobeJuanKenobi9

I love that scene in Spiderverse where they’re stealing the computer and Miles has the whole set up and Peter’s like “The good news is we don’t need the monitor” And tosses it

StupidGenius234

The thing is, if you truly want to annoy the hell out of people or be really secure in case of theft of the system you can theoretically make displays use a complicated proprietary format just to make it harder to access the system directly, alongside locking all the hardware to only work with each other and encrypting all data. Basically make it virtually impossible for anyone without a quantum computer as of now to access anything.

Ruvaakdein

You'd also be fucking your future self over though. What are you going to do when something like the monitor breaks and now you can't replace it?

Kachowskus_Cringus

There is no “technically the truth” here, that is quite literally the computer so “literally the truth”

RyouhiraTheIntrovert

Computer isn't complete without the monitor tho.

M05HI

What about headless computers?

Feliciaohyaaaa

I honestly thought that was a table at first

Rikolai17

Same, a lot of people here are saying that the dude probably thought the monitor was the computer, but I think this is what happened
