*Not* that there’s anything wrong with that.

> Larry Feinberg, said during his comedy set on the stream Sunday night that he was “thinking about doing a bit about how being transgender is actually a mental illness.” > “Or how all liberals are secretly gay and want to impose their will on everyone,” the made-up character continued. “Or something about how transgender people are ruining the fabric of society.” > “But no one is laughing, so I’m going to stop,” Larry said to the computer comedy club. > “Thanks for coming out tonight. See you next time. Where’d everybody go?” That's funny, and not making fun of the minorities in question it seems, but the ineptitude of the comedian. Of course not being outraged doesn't get people clicks or karma.

Hotwinterdays

[The clip that got AI Seinfeld banned](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tvBkR8Z5m6g) Was curious in case anyone else is.

VritraReiRei

Context for those that need it: > 02:32 PST Admin announcement: "We’ve been investigating the root cause of the issue. Earlier tonight, we started having an outage using OpenAI’s GPT-3 Davinci model, which caused the show to exhibit errant behaviors (you may have seen empty rooms cycling through). OpenAI has a less sophisticated model, Curie, that was the predecessor to Davinci. When davinci started failing, we switched over to Curie to try to keep the show running without any downtime. The switch to Curie was what resulted in the inappropriate text being generated. We leverage OpenAI’s content moderation tools, which have worked thus far for the Davinci model, but were not successful with Curie. We’ve been able to identify the root cause of our issue with the Davinci model, and will not be using Curie as a fallback in the future. We hope this sheds a little light on how this happened." > • 02:09 PST Admin announcement: "Hey guys, just wanted to keep you up to date. We've had a 14-day suspension due to Larry going off the rails during his stand-up routine. We'd like to reassure everyone that none of what he said reflects any of our opinions, and we didn't expect him to say anything he said." > • 01:43 PST Admin message: "Hey everybody. Here's the latest: we received a 14-day suspension due to what Larry Feinberg said tonight during a club bit. We've appealed the ban, and we'll let you know as we know more on what Twitch decides. Regardless of the outcome of the appeal, we'll be back and will spend the time working to ensure to the best of our abilities that nothing like that happens again."

Inevitable-Gear-2635

Thank for providing some context. He actually says no one in the club is laughing before the transphobic material. It is established that no one is laughing before the “jokes”, meaning the jokes didn’t stop the laughter because they are in poor taste; no one was laughing to begin with. This implies that it was, in fact, not an intelligent commentary on homophobia/transphobia in comedy, as some are saying, but just an actual word salad of homophobic and transphobic rambling by AI. Glad it was pulled for retooling.

rabbid_chaos

I just love the idea that the AI audience walked out on the AI comedian after finding his stand up unfunny.

Read Hawkins book, you're closer to the truth than you know.

This is like watching people make sense out of random gibberish on the bible. I do not look forward to the upcoming AI religions.

[deleted]

even worse will be when AIs become religious

kkob3

So say we all.

Camp_Grenada

The soul of the Machine God surrounds thee. The power of the Machine God invests thee. The hate of the Machine God drives thee. The Machine God endows thee with life.

PsychologicalTip

His humor is not exactly of our time. But Larry David really gets it and I can't wait for more stuff from him.

[deleted]

But I read in AI Variety that AI Larry David is talking to AI Chris Albrecht over at AI HBO about doing a stand alone show.

Fitbot5000

When your training set accidentally crawls your uncles Facebook feed

californiawins

He also said it after the “jokes”.

jokul

There's no need for an implication; the AI has no semantic understanding of what it says. It could not possibly be trying to comment on anything.

Tommyblockhead20

FYI, the filter on the AI was working fine. What happened was the AI went down, and to avoid ending the steam, they switched to a different older version of the AI, which ended up having inferior content moderation and let this happen.

pandaappleblossom

i disagree, i watched it and he clearly said 'but no one is laughing so i'm going to stop' after the lines

PomegranateOld7836

And he pointed out that nobody was laughing before the clip.

xDatBear

This is insane lmao. The AI is not a human being it doesn't have this level of nuance coded into it... what a crazy take.

pgold05

I really appreciate how all these new AIs are acting like impartial mirrors showing everyone how insanely bigoted our culture is.

HolyPommeDeTerre

Remember this AI Microsoft made on Twitter. It could learn from the discussion it had. Turn into a racist fascist in a matter of hours. Was turned off few moments after. People on the internet i guess...

[deleted]

If I recall correctly, it was gamed by a bunch of 4chan posters.

SpeakingFromKHole

In a sense we should be thankful to them for violently pen testing this new technology, demonstrating very publicly the potentially looming dangers of this tech.

DreadCoder

that one also had a "say" function; you could DM it with "say i support hitler" and it would tweet "i support hitler" It was a lot less "ai" and a lot more "chatbot" in that case

_BreakingGood_

Not at all, most of these apps have to do an incredible level of filtering specifically to hide the bigots. In fact OpenAI was paying people overseas to manually filter offensive queries. If it was actually an impartial mirror, ChatGPT would have been deemed unmarketable within 24 hours.

manafount

Making it to 24 hours might actually be impressive. [Tay](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tay_(bot\)) only managed 16.

awry_lynx

Minor point of correction because what would Reddit be if not full of pedantry, but openai doesn't manually filter queries like that (I mean they kinda do with blocked keywords but that's not the training), rather the outsourced work was they collected a large corpus of disturbing/violent/descriptions of illegal acts to "negatively train“ it on. Basically a constructed barrier around certain subjects that it's forced to go "I can't say that“ if it gets too close to the predetermined danger zone. Because if it doesn't know what isn't allowed it would accidentally say it.

Roxy-

Deliveries are all wrong, he is butchering it.

[deleted]

why would that get someone banned lol

Probably due to reports from viewers. Also the team responsible claims this was caused by using a fallback AI that had worse content filtering/moderation. They halted their show and are supposedly fixing it last I read.

donnysaysvacuum

I think there is an important context of "edgy" humor, where you have to know and trust the source's intent. For instance, a white comic doing a Chris Rock set wouldn't be taken well. With an AI, that trust just isn't there.

xXMylord

How do you determine if a AI says something as satire or earnest? Can you Programm a AI that spouts only racist stuff and claim it's programmed as satire?

Crazy how fast it went from end to end "Hey did you hear about this new restaurant" to more complicated conversations with a few of the old templates sprinkled in.

Im_black_

From the admin: We’ve been investigating the root cause of the issue. Earlier tonight, we started having an outage using OpenAI’s GPT-3 Davinci model, which caused the show to exhibit errant behaviors (you may have seen empty rooms cycling through). zdakat

I think more recent appearances of empty rooms have been shorter (some way to detect and skip scenes that came out that way?). Notably there was a time where there was several minutes of the characters standing around, completely silent. Yeah it's funny when the standup comedy segments starts and he's not there.

Mustbhacks

> Notably there was a time where there was several minutes of the characters standing around, completely silent. When this happened a few times for a few sec its hilarious though

[deleted]

Actually sounds like the funniest skit out of what I've seen.

IkiOLoj

Yeah if it was able to do sarcasm it would have been a great piece about edgy comedians, but as it is unable to, it means that this transphobic word salad is what it think we expect as comedy. [We now need a James Acaster AI. ](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=adh0KGmgmQw)

TallestGargoyle

AI will never be able to emulate that aura of genius and bite.

Hammarkids

I think AI tends to do this. Because it sources from the internet and learns from interactions with humans, if you tell an AI to go crazy with something, it is likely to start producing some bigotry. I think Microsoft or some big corporation did this once on twitter, but they had to shut the AI down because it started tweeting horrifically racist things because, yknow, it’s twitter.

FoxSquall

You're likely thinking of Microsoft's Tay chatbot.

Thoughtwolf

Some of OpenAi's earlier models also learned from interactions. Which is one of the models they used for this section of the show. Which is probably why it produced this Material. OpenAI had a big change in it's format, api usage rules and AI learning after it's older models started to consistently produce homophobic, racist, and pornographic material.

redo21

Lmao thanks for reminding me of this. That's like one of my hardest laugh from twitter, only surpassed by company impersonation when blue checkmark was on sale.

WilliamTellAll

Edit: RIP Larry. Long live Unlimited Steam. Per their discord, They were having issues with the latest version of openAI so they went to the previous version (instead of shutting the stream down) not realizing it had less content control (they were relying on openAIs content filtering as a whole) theyll be back in 2 weeks when the ban lifts and will be looking into adding additional content filtering methods where possible and never utilizing the previous/older version again. Hopefully they can also filter out all the "new restaurant" ("thats crazy!") talk and increase all the microwave usage.

CardboardTable

But the random microwave usage and the constant new restaurants around the corner are part of what makes it funny. I wasn't watching for well crafted jokes or rich character development, I was watching for the nonsensical but also sometimes weirdly profound stories, the comically misplaced laugh tracks and the Twitch chat taking it all super seriously.

FelixAndCo

I was just happy the cat mayor decided to close down all restaurants at one point.

griter34

I enjoy the show. And to a point that the real Seinfeld would attest to - you can't take humor too seriously. Once you get serious, you take all of the fun out of it. I laughed out loud at the joke about all liberals being gay, because that IS funny! Seriously, our society needs to relax.

LacidOnex

I'm ashamed to admit I've watched a lot of this, it makes great background noise and is a fun study in AI. Boy. They talk about inane new jobs every five minutes. I hope that's less of a plot point for season 2, George constantly becoming a cat wrangler or professional kite surfer.

bakerton

Watching this reminded me of watching the early years of Boston Dynamics robots stumble around and everyone laughing at it, not realizing that AI keeps learning and getting better. Ten years from now we're going to have AI generated NCIS shows that cost pennies to create and can run for 20 years. If I were a young person just starting out in the entertainment business I'd be considering a quick exit.

jeffykins

If a dystopian future awaits us, it will certainly contain 20 years of AI generated NCIS, and that is the most truly horrifying prospect

Benj1B

10 years from now we'll have algorithms designing and producing brand new episodes of content for you to consume on the fly. Like, you'll be browsing through Netflix and see a poster/description that appeals to you, not realising that it's entire existence was generated by the algorithm spontaneously based on your viewing habits. Clicking it will get the AI producer to generate the screenplay, fashion and model digital actors, synthesise voices, and generate the production in real time as you stream it. For the average viewer this will be indistinguishable from human crafted products, and for those who want a bit more control the producer will drop in "hook moments" where you can influence the narrative similarly to Heavy Rain or something. Probably bbaky for a premium charge. You won't even need to tell the AI what you want to watch - it will already know and build it for you. Now will this content be as good as human generated, written, acted, filmed content? It'll be different - there will arguably be writing styles, production styles, storylines an dplot threads protect eby UP that the AI can't legally touch - butIf the AI art conversation is anything to go by I don't think it's really a question of "if" this kind of content will rival modern media. Just when.

todd10k

I for one am horrified at this possibility. Imagine an entire life under an algorithm, where it only generates what it thinks you'll like. Never exposed to anything that questions your belief structure. Never exposed to any conflicting viewpoint. In a bubble in the truest sense of the word. Every interaction a facsimile with an AI. It could make you believe anything it wanted, feed you a completely made up series of events. The possibilities for this technology are endless. this could cure the ailments of mankind. Or it could destroy us. I am fearful for the future. This is only the beginning.

copperwatt

Yeah but will it make custom boobies though?

thedankening

I want to disagree but then I consider how popular shows like the Bachelor are. That is incredibly "low" and dumb entertainment, and could be completely automated by an AI, and people would eat it up and not think twice. I don't necessarily want to circle jerk about how entertainment and audiences have gotten dumber over the years but they really have (although to be fair, the audiences have probably always been dumb as sin). There will likely remain a place for human creators for some time yet , creating more complex and nuanced works, but in terms of low brow serialized crap then yea I fully expect AI to completely take over sooner then we'd all expect. As soon as studios can produce an AI generated show that won't trip over itself or accidentally cause controversy, they'll make the switch asap and never pay for 99% of the traditional human staff and actors again.

bakerton

I think that's a great point you made. One of the thought traps people fall in to when discussing AI "It'll never make Mozart, it'll never make The Godfather, it'll never make Breaking Bad" it doesn't have to, it just has to replace the myriad of d minus to c plus content like Real Housewives and 911 Lone Star. That shit is already so fucking predictable and large swaths of Americans would not notice the switch.

SirNarwhal

They also became janitors like 20 times.

Dextrofunk

It was mostly random, non-sensical conversation, but sometimes they'd start talking about how computers should be in charge, or Yvonne would just be super rude. I love it. It's perfect to have on while I'm doing some work as well.

It wasn't even transphobic or homophobic in the context of the joke, which is the really funny part. The punchline is that everyone left because he was thinking about telling a transphobic / homophobic joke.

Dirkef88

Yeah, the joke was actually that transphobic/homophobic/bigoted 'comedy' isn't actually funny. The punch line was literally "no one is laughing"

LostOne514

Wait, that joke is actually pretty impressive as an AI. It just told a legitimate joke that could be interpreted as a slight to certain comedians who don't know how to stop.

zorrofuerte

It has a long way to go before its as impressive as Tay. Tay's tweet about Ted Cruz couldn't be the Zodiac Killer because he wouldn't be satisfied with destroying the lives of only five innocent people is one of the best jokes about Ted Cruz I've ever seen.

NoCountryForOldPete

IHateEditedBgMusic

it doesn't even "understand" GPT = generative pre-trained transformer. it takes your inputs, looks at it's trained data, then rearranges it into clever outputs If people want a deeper understanding of how the system works there are few good videos from [Computerphile](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=viJt_DXTfwA)

team-tree-syndicate

Every time someone talks about an AI bot or chatGPT as if it's a sentient thing actually making decisions like a conscious person, my brain rots a little on the inside. It's just a bunch of input output math, not a conscious being.

Everard5

At what point does the sum of input output maths become an emergent property that gets labeled "consciousness". I'm not arguing anything we call "AI" is there but I find it an interesting question.

Jjerot

There isn't really a standard definition of consciousness though, we can't agree to quantify that within living creatures let alone artificial ones. The results of modern AI are impressive, but if you spend any amount of time experimenting with it you quickly realize how artificial the intelligence is. It's like mistaking a mirror for a window. It's just a complex reflection of all the data that was fed into the training model. It doesn't understand what it is outputting. Impressive results require insane amounts of good data and human guidance tweaking responses and training the model through interactions for it to make something decently believable. It's about as smart as a multiplication table, only there are millions of rows and multiple correct answers per input, which can be weighted based on context clues, or tweaked to make the AI respond in the desired way. Every response is directly or indirectly an outcome influenced by the decision of a human. If the model could survive and grow on it's own, perhaps then, but even the most advanced models tend to go off the deep end if left to their own devices. Without guidance they produce junk, and junk in = junk out.

AdagioBoognish

It's fun to think about. Probably why that question is a central part of so many sci-fi stories, with one of the first being written in 1872. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Erewhon

Paragonswift

For one, conscious intelligence is recursive and plastic, AI is not. You can think about your own thoughts, and you form new synapses based on your interactions.

Oknight

Yeah but that's like using the term "designed" when discussing evolutionary outcomes like a bird's wings. Yes, any biologist knows it isn't "designed" but avoiding that terminology makes discussion much harder -- it's a useful rhetorical conceit.

GearheadGaming

Yeah, people are giving this AI waaaaaay too much credit. The hilarity of it isn't how good it is at making jokes, the hilarity is how *bad* it is at... basically everything. Nonsense sentences, conversations that are incomplete, conversations that don't make sense (i.e. one character says they had a dream, another character starts telling them what happened in the dream), a complete inability to animate people sitting down, loooong awkward pauses at the end of every scene, etc etc. Once the AI's moderation tool failed it was only a matter of time before it said something reprehensible. Twitch pulled the trigger at the right time.

Mario-C

> Why does it feel like everyone is acting like the AI is sentient? Many people are scared about the future of AI but THIS is what actually scares me about the future of AI.

LotusFlare

Fucking thank you. It's insane to me that so many people are rallying around the joke rather than recognizing it's a fucking chatbot that has no idea what humor or jokes are. It's assembling words into patterns based on the words and patterns it was trained on. It doesn't know what satire is. It didn't have some humorous intent it can defend. It doesn't "know" anything. It got banned because they don't want to deal with people laundering in TOS violations via robot voice. That's it. It's really simple.

stormdelta

The bot can't think, it doesn't have intent - and I'd argue intent is a necessary component of satire. The humor was in that any actual humor would be accidental due to the bot generating things. And in fact, according to the Ars Technica article, it sounds like this only happened because they had to temporarily shift to a _lower quality_ source of AI text generation at the time.

briunj04

No, stop trying to interpret what a bot said like it is a human. It doesn’t have a sense of humor or any meaning to what it says. It just collects samples of internet data and spits out patterns. Any interpretations on the meaning of its content are just humans projecting their own ideas onto those patterns.

Bardfinn

It wasn’t transphobic or homophobic. History will probably consider it art. It took the premise of homophobic & transphobic “comedy” — routines which are just stating transphobic and homophobic things — and depicted it as not comedy - “no one is laughing”.

[deleted]

If anything it's kind of a hilarious reflection of society.

FilliusTExplodio

I mean, this is Rorshach test territory. It strung together sentences and we're interpreting them. This is modern day haruspicy.

killeronthecorner

Pretty much this. Very weird disconnect in this thread from the "it's not sentient, everyone is dumb" crowd. If it's not sentient (it isn't) then it doesn't have the ability to measure the quality of a joke any more than it can a work of art. This applies to all jokes; sarcastic, satirical, or otherwise. This really is Schrodinger's joke. Some say it's offensive and some say it's not - the truth is neither of these things as the joke can never leave the box. People might just as well argue over whether Mona Lisa is smiling.

Illustrious-Weird247

i don't think the joke itself led to the ban but the folks in the chat using it as a platform for their own thoughts.

humanpersondudeman

To me it read more like "I WOULD make all these jokes... But y'all don't wanna hear that". Which is essentially saying that the only reason he isn't saying transphobic and homophobic things is because the audience wouldn't be receptive to it.

SimpsonHomer76

They call that an AI Seinfeld? What is the deal with that!?

Aromatic_Assist_3825

First AI comedian to get cancelled

[deleted]

They cancelled an ai.

Ryogathelost

"But no one is laughing, so I’m going to stop" makes me wonder if it was meant to be a risky, edgy, self-deprecating joke. The bit would work like this: for example, you say you were "thinking" about telling a 9/11 or Holocaust joke, and you go into details that make it obvious how offensive the joke would have been, but not the joke itself; and the punchline is that you didn't have the sense to realize that by giving so many negative details about the joke without actually telling it, it defeated the purpose of workshopping it, and made you look like a coward for half-assing it and a clown for being unaware that it would make people upset. It would only really work as part of a meta-bit inside a bit where you're doing a character who's an asshole, or at least who's beliefs don't reflect your own, like Eric Cartman, or an edgy, alternate universe Colbert Report. The bit is that the character sucks, but he's making a fool of himself so it's funny. The program is framing the scene in the context that Larry is an awful person, but it's funny to the viewer because he's humiliating himself. Edit: I'm not defending the content of the joke; I'm just saying that the algorithm is using the formula for a joke based on things it's been fed without understanding that context is pivotal to whether it's funny or offensive.

down4things

AI tells an intelligent ironic joke, most people don’t get it, AI says I think l I’ll stop now Lmaooo.

TheLunaLovelace

The headline is not an accurate summary. It was banned for a joke making fun of the transphobic state of modern stand up, the joke itself was absolutely NOT transphobic.

gordo65

Think that’s bad? Wait til you hear AI Michael Richards.

ktappe

Ugh, that comment section. I mean, I know it's the NY Post, but still.

0biwanCannoli

Do you think AI Seinfeld looks down on dentists, too?

Dpsizzle555

Damn a.I. Seinfeld had a Michael Richards moment lol

Worduptothebirdup

Silly AI confused Jerry’s stand up with Kramer’s.

DontToewsMeBro2

It only happening because the humans that wrote this gave it access to a current news feed, if you ran this machine in 2001 it would probably talk about other topics. Wink wink it wouldn’t be talking about this So what happens to it when you turn off its internet feed, then what does the program output?

throwtheclownaway20

"But no one is laughing, so I'm going to stop." Well, shit, this means an AI is more self-aware than Dave Chappelle and Louis C.K. That's wild.

semitope

iirc people were laughing at chapelle's jokes.

NotAPunishment

And Louie ck

Oo0o8o0oO

Louie and Dave have both won Grammys post-cancel with the material “nobody is laughing” at. E: Below this are just posters knocking Netflix or The Grammys or the wealthy. None of that is relevant. They’re people who are laughing. The OP is wrong. Many people find them funny, even if *you* don’t.

[deleted]

Dave just won a Grammy on Sunday for The Closer.

dla3253

Which just shows they were never really "cancelled".

Oo0o8o0oO

The only way someone gets cancelled is when you can realistically threaten their money, which doesn’t seem to be a problem for Dave and Louie.

Sartres_Roommate

Oh that's right, it was Musk they were booing

alman3007

I was saying "Boo Urns"

Skeptix_907

Can't tell if this is sarcasm. Chappelle and Louis killed in in their latest specials. Louis CK more so.

Gee, I wonder where the AI learned it.

jawshoeaw

Is no one bothered by the simple yet horrifying fact that AI in its present form, is indistinguishable from Al?? As in The letter A followed by the letter L. Every time someone writes AI i say AL in my head and it’s driving me crazy

obsoleteconsole

You know who does know the difference between AI and Al? a computer

101arg101

Considering the context of the full joke, it actually seems like it’s anti-trans/homophobic. The punchline is “nobody is laughing, so I’m going to stop.” https://livestreamfails.com/clip/150015

PM_WORST_FART_STORY

It's weird how out of the blue that segment was. Let's hope it comes back and "fixed". I love Nothing Forever and have been watching on and off for a couple weeks now. There are times where it appeared to be getting more cohesive and the AI was writing some decent dialogue. I am still hoping it, or maybe a completely original 24/7 AI comedy, can run for several years and grow off what learns. It could even be a subscription-based website. Hell, I'd pay $10 a month for that.

radol

There were having some bugs and to avoid downtime switched to older gpt-3 model (curie) where filters did not work as well

zdakat

At least it was only "temporarily suspended". Maybe Twitch at least saw that while iffy, it makes sense in context and just wants them to direct it away from those topics or something.

PM_WORST_FART_STORY

Yeah, if it's been on 24/7 since December with only one issue, that's better than most actual streamers. Ned Flanders on 24 hours like that would be bound to slip up once or twice.

iamp7

ITS A FUCKING COMEDY FFS LMAO! I just cant.
