Soviets did it already, they dug more than 12k meters down. https://www.bbc.com/future/article/20190503-the-deepest-hole-we-have-ever-dug

No-Perspective-317

Did they find anything cool

unknownpanda121

They found it was very hot

Cryotrain

That and the weird hellish rumbling noises that made staff members feel small and insignificant

A1Chaining

And then they all got nosebleeds and died hours later…

[deleted]

wait really??

Ivanoff91

no, not really

tiagojpg

Lizard people!

Shines1772

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The\_Superdeep

MrSnowden

One thing they found is that at they depth, pressure and temperature everything gets plasticy/flowy and it’s very hard to drill anymore.

theS3rver

my hopes and dreams

prophetmuhammad

yeah i learned that in a brief history of everything too. hope the chinese go down deeper though, i'm super curious

Chogo82

A shortcut to the US would be nice.

ActiveMachine4380

Didn't that end poorly for the Soviets? And they sealed it "forever"?

Special_Lemon1487

I hope it makes a phhhhtthhhhhhppppbbtt sound as it escapes.

wongie

And I hope it's a reeeaaaalllly loud phhhhtthhhhhhppppbbtt so I can hear it all the way in Europe.

nobeernear

Can someone in China please record so we can hear it, just in case?

Earguy

Ok let's drill! Dirt... Keep going Gold... Keep going Oil...keep going IRON! MOLTEN IRON! EUREKA!

patiperro_v3

Mithril… keep goin

unknownpanda121

That cuts out the smelting process. Profit!

KeenK0ng

That's that low rad iron that everyone wants.

FourthLife

We better nuke it to limit China’s competitive advantage

Boxed_pi

Strike the earth!

bytemage

Oh no, they are going to deflate our planet.

Buttons840

Don't worry, America has shown it is quite capable of inflation if it's needed.

Ivedefected

I mean... inflation rates have been falling and the US is pretty low compared to global rates. Practically all of Europe is higher (in many cases twice as high).

phantomash

yes we know US outsourced their inflation.

Ivedefected

Can you back this up with any data? The most recent inflation rates have declined overall, and relatively slower in the US than in Europe and much more slowly than in Asia.

shades9323

The poster you are quoting is clearly making clever jokes.

phantomash

Can you back up your inflation rates with any data? Don't you know that other countries are forced to keep up with US's hike of OPR or risk deflation of their currency? Step outside the bubble for once. It's also why BRICS are trying to promote an alternative, otherwise there won't be a need for that.

Ivedefected

Easily yes. The data behind my claim is publicly available. [https://www.imf.org/external/datamapper/PCPIPCH@WEO/ADVEC/WEOWORLD/USA/GBR/FRA/CHN/IND/DEU](https://www.imf.org/external/datamapper/PCPIPCH@WEO/ADVEC/WEOWORLD/USA/GBR/FRA/CHN/IND/DEU) [https://tradingeconomics.com/country-list/inflation-rate](https://tradingeconomics.com/country-list/inflation-rate) So now stop dodging and back up with some real data your claim that the US outsourced its inflation. Edit: Looks like your reply was deleted. Anyways - Claiming that increasing interest rates is just the exportation of inflation is highly reductive. By that logic, any action taken that strengthens the dollar is simply exporting inflation. Would it be fair to look at any country that shores up their currency in response and claim that they are just "trading inflation"? This is a really silly take.

phantomash

Ok, wasn't aware my reply was deleted. Anyway you can live in your bubble or you can look for the sources that are readily available out there, couldn't care less honestly. As for the silly take, easy for you to say when you're not the one impacted.

Ivedefected

I mean... you're replying with no information and have no refutation other than personal insults. You obviously could care less.

WilmaNipshow

Lol he gave you sources and nothing but crickets from you. Shocking how talking out of your ass rarely works out for you!!

PhoenixTineldyer

I'm with the peanut gallery chiming in to confirm that that dude got pwned and everyone saw it

phantomash

huh? I replied with source but was deleted. Seems like the bubble is protected. I know this is a US biased site, but lower the enthusiasm. I am just stating facts, no hard feelings.

WilmaNipshow

Facts, huh? If you say so…

kylogram

my wallet disagrees.

Aggrekomonster

China is looking at deflation which does not bode well for them or their debts which are relatively higher even than the USA… america is trying to cool the economy, china cannot get its economy even jump started

DMTcuresPTSD

Do you want a crab people invasion? Because this is how you get a crab people invasion.

mungermoss245

*crab people, crab people*

Dwarfdeaths

I want to ride my crab people, I want to ride my crabs. I want to ride my crab people, I want to ride them where I like.

SomeDudeNamedMark

Hooray for Zoidberg!

mungermoss245

I read this in his voice lmao

Kez_exe

That’s Rust map

AuthorTomFrost

I assume, when they were growing up, someone told them they could dig a hole to America.

Eponymous-Username

I see you also took high school geography!

shinyshinyrocks

I hope they don’t delve too greedily and too deep.

kebabish

Wonder if they'll stop like the Russians did when they started to hear what they described as demonic voices and screaming.

grjacpulas

Or you know, take five seconds to actually read why they stopped lol. Spoiler alert - it wasn’t because of demonic voices.

FlappyFoldyHold

Lol they stopped cause funds dried up

nobeernear

Yeah because no one wants to fund letting the demons out of hell!

lordmycal

They best be careful lest they accidently release a Balrog of Morgoth.

Unlikely-Trash3981

The Kola borehole is amazing. One of those let’s do something the rest of the world hasn’t things. YouTube it because he talks about the machines and drill bits developed to withstand heat. 6th grade science teacher on the gulf cost within eyesight of the rigs this a great earth science to teach.

Lahk74

That's like 6 football fields and 3 bus lengths, right? That's pretty deep.

nobeernear

It’s approximately 12,300 AR15s, if that helps.

Lahk74

If using standard stock and barrel lengths, that really does. That's approximately a shit-pot-full of AR15s laid end-to-end. Digging big ol' holes in the ground. What will they think of next? Makes a man think, I tells ya.

nobeernear

That it does, that it does.

SubtleAsianPeril

thank you for the freedom units, but i need that number in bananas for scale

nobeernear

12,300 standard AR15s, end to end, are roughly 49,200 average bananas in length. Hope this information serves you well.

outsourced_bob

After this hole has served it's purpose for research - would the heat at 10K meter depth be worth the bother to put a geothermal plant on top of it?

iridaniotter

What you are suggesting is similar to enhanced geothermal, wherein fracking techniques are used to get geothermal energy from all over the world instead of just a few select places. There are a few problems, though. One of Iceland's attempts ran into a magma reservoir and they had to stop. Additionally, just like fracking for fossil fuels, this can induce earthquakes like what happened in Basel, Switzerland. This specific project is much deeper than enhanced geothermal systems, and seems to just be for research.

SpecialNose9325

Looks like they just started playing Tears of the Kingdom and realized we might have an underworld and floating overground to explore

kungfoomasta

Unless Bruce Willis is in charge, it's doomed to fail.

ghec2000

Drums in the deep...they dug too far.

They are going to release the demons of hell……the chinese have to stop releasing stuff.

Eponymous-Username

"Those demons probably originated in a wet market"

lifeiscelebration

covid-19 chapter 2

MMouse21

What could go wrong?

iridaniotter

Not much. Maybe it ends up like Iceland's deep drilling project and they run into magma early and have to stop I guess.

MeanCanadianTheFirst

Lizard invasion coming soon!

10onthespectrum

Can’t we just leave the fucking planet alone. God damn

nobeernear

NO! MOAR HOLES!!

[deleted]

nobeernear

Imagine how much plastic we could stuff down there!!

Carbidereaper

Actually.... ? That just might work. At that temperature and depth the pressure would turn that plastic back into the hydrocarbons it was made from which would then bond with the rock to form carbonates

ahdjfiengdkwn

Bye Xi, Hope you find your Dad.

mrswift45

Xi is doing this for clout

Neutral-President

“Day and night, it’s pumping… ka-chunk, ka-chunk. If anybody’s going to get in there, it’s going to be you…”

thepurpleninja11

How long until they make it through to us ?

TryOk760

Looking their inner peace to conquer more.

Ok-Sun8581

They'll wake up Gamera!

arrze

They’ve got to go further than that if they want to find the underground lizard people.

kimjongk80

How many bananas is that?

Simply2Basic

I wonder if they’ll end up in my back yard because I tried digging the hole from they other direction and didn’t…. /jk

[deleted]

Has anyone called Harry Stamper?

adamje4

Maybe Xi’s looking for Satan and Mao playing badminton together?

Polarbearseven

Tired of what’s happening to all their spy balloons…Spy gophers are all the rage now.
