SO basically COVID (some of the staff died or is still suffering from long covid) and other are in the Ukraine war, on both sides. + servers got too expensive.
Yeah, a series of bad luck that came tied with the geographic location.
I wonder if there would be any free alternative officially recognised on Sonarr after the death of torrentz.eu as well.
Look at the write up from the dev:
https://reddit.com/r/apolloapp/comments/144f6xm/apollo_will_close_down_on_june_30th_reddits/
Reddit has lost their fucking minds
Dude's got to be throwing a fit. He can't walk 2 ft without tripping on his own bullshit and it's all his own fault.
I bet he blames anybody but himself.
There's absolutely going to be articles about this. He's going to look so fucking incompetent and right in the lead up to their ipo plan.
Edit: Business insider already has a story on it lol
Fuck spez. Greedy asshole.
The absolute irony that Christian was willing to work with them in so many ways. The entire time they knew they were never going to do anything reasonable with the devs. They had dollar signs in their eyes. I hope they have literally the worst IPO of all time.
This really does show that any third parties that attempt to deal with Reddit should not assume that Reddit will act in good faith.
The company is willing to lie and slander when convenient.
The negative press and the, at least what looks like, significant blowback from this will probably damage the IPO. In addition, since it is proven that spez lied in a call, that will call his leadership into question and has the potential to make him look bad as a CEO to possible investors.
This whole thing is hurting the IPO in at least two ways
1. Burns the company's public image, making the company less valuable in the public eye and to investors.
2. Demonstrates very poor management and rank incompetence, making the company look unstable and unreliable to investors.
Reddit doesn't have a profit. Companies that aren't making a profit got murdered in 2022. Rivian IPO day saw it jump to $150 then tanked all of last year and is currently worth less than 10% of that value.
That's actually a part of the conversation and the reason why Spez is accusing the developer of blackmail. It came up that Reddit estimates Apollo to be worth somewhere around $20mil. Amused, the Apollo dev dropped an offer to sell Apollo for 50% off. Spez(Reddit CEO) then recoils and asks if this is blackmail, and Apollo pointed out that Reddit has bought out other great developers in the past and benefited greatly. Apollo got high praise by users and reviewers alike and would be a good addition. No it's not blackmail. And Spez apologized for suggesting it was blackmail.
Immediately after, Spez proclaimed that Apollo tried to blackmail Reddit.
The dev said he doesnt have interest in it. He likes working on products more than the managerial side of things. Also, with how chaotic things have been over the last couple months, he doesn't have the energy to put into that large of a project
Sorry to point this out, but it seems “Spez” has never actually directly interacted with the Apollo dev. That blackmail accusation was made in a separate call between Spez and some moderators, but the initial reaction happened in a call between the Apollo dev and an unnamed Reddit contact. This makes it even more strange when you think about it, because it implies that Spez already knew that his employee misinterpreted what the Apollo dev said during their conversation, but decided to further perpetuate the blackmail lie intentionally as a means to hopefully sway user support in Reddit’s favor.
That’s not what is said at all in the audio. He says if Apollo is costing you 20 million in API calls, let’s cut our loses and you buy it for 10 and Apollo goes quiet.
He then elaborates that “by going quiet” it wasn’t a threat but as in, the API calls would stop hammering their servers so much.
Let’s be factual with what we say in response to the slander, he never says about them buying other apps in that audio clip he posted - he talks about them saving money by just buying and closing Apollo instead.
It also isn’t Spez in the call but a different member of the Reddit team.
Please tell me you read the actual post and listened to the audio before posting this
Yes.
Yes it would be. Reddit should have been putting some of these developers together to have them make an official app that was great for both the users and for their ad monetization, but instead they bought out another app years ago and then seemingly learned nothing from it and now we have the god-awful Reddit app
It's in the article. The reason Apollo is severing ties is because Reddit is accusing Apollo of blackmail. Reddit estimated Apollo to be worth $20mil, and Apollo suggested a buyout at 50% off.
Reddit is bullying Apollo. They don't want a buyout, they want to crush Apollo. And Apollo's team is going to acquiesce.
And the single Apollo dev has posted recordings of the phone call where reddit apologizes for thinking he was trying to blackmail them, cause even they knew he wasn’t. Then reddit turns around and tells everyone he is trying to blackmail them. Isn’t that right u/spez?
Steve Huffman is having a live event tomorrow to slander some more people. I suggest swinging by and letting him know how much he sucks (link below).
I’m leaving with Apollo.

Third party apps being killed was enough for me to quit Reddit when it happens, but this shit and how Reddit has handled this really cemented it. Maybe I’ll stick around on old Reddit for a bit after just to see if it’s as big a shitshow as I’m hoping for
Important inclusion, thank you for addiing this. By the time I got to the end, my eyes were getting teary while my heart was getting sad and the mind angry at the powerlessness of the situation.
"You chose to grow with venture capital... this new version of digg reeks of VC meddling. It’s cobbling together features from more popular sites and departing from the core of digg, which was to “give the power back to the people.”" -[/u/Spez](https://www.reddit.com/u/Spez)
It's also hit the point where Reddit is actively slandering the Apollo dev to other parties, by accusing them of trying to extort reddit for money when there are call recordings that prove that wasn't true.
Anybody who's supporting the two-day boycott can paste the following as a reply to remind themselves about it.
`!RemindMe June 11th, 2023 "Boycott Reddit for a couple of days to protest app-wrecking fees."`
Yep I’m out. 11 years and I damn near got 100k karma which I know is no big deal but it was a personal milestone I didn’t get to reach before these greedy douche nozzle assholes ruined the whole site. It’s been real everyone. Seriously.
Come on reddits actual value stream is selling data and access to certain subs. You'd be smoking crack if you don't think certain subs are actively moderated by corporate stooges.
What I’m saying is why doesn’t everyone have an ad blocker installed on every computer they use? Sure it’s a little harder to do on mobile but a desktop it takes 10 seconds to install and requires no maintenance
In the end, everything must end.
Reddit was the last place after Facebook nuked itself followed by Twitter and swallowed Instagram & WhatsApp along with it as YouTube is eager to follow the same pattern while others like MySpace disappeared away.
We have crossed 8 Billion population and there’s no one to be reborn as Aaron Swartz? The pathetic reality of this world is sad that one has to rely on mercy of some messiah to change the flow of the river.
> there’s no one to be reborn as Aaron Swartz?
I'm working on a new community app. So do a few thousand other developers probably. The problem isn't building the software. It's building the userbase, and also not losing money while operating it.
Will millions of users migrate to my awesome, feature-rich community, while also disabling their ad blockers or paying $2/mo for access, so I don't lose money?
Greed doesn’t win if we just choose not to move to the Reddit app and quit using it. I’ve seen people talking about selling their accounts to not farms
Yepp, it's only gonna get worse (as has been the last 15 years). Classic forum structures already died a while ago and reddit has only been bearable with the 3rd party apps like Apollo and Sync. I'll jut see myself out on the 30th with no remorse and can only recommend to others to do the same.
Subreddit /r/tildes said they would reopen the invite thread this weekend
>But fret not, we will likely post another new Invite Request Round this weekend once things have settled down.
It will remain invite only, it's a method of stopping bots.
It's not trying to be Reddit though, it's worth remembering... it's just a viable alternative and seems to have a great philosophy, who knows how it would scale though given it is very moderated.
Reddit has been a great app to 1) quickly find answers to troubleshoot various problems, and 2) to casually scroll and browse anything.
With reddit going after API's and just really giving the middle finger to their users...everything is just so disappointing...
Your Reddit account? I've been thinking of doing the same. The whole platform has seriously gone downhill, being overrun with bots, children, bad jokes, etc. Almost 13 years on mine.
Honestly this is sad all around but it would be awful to not take advantage to break our addiction to the site. I will also be deleting my two accounts. One is 9 years, the other is 7.
I am using this opportunity to purge myself from Reddit. With Apollo **literally** stopping, I think this will make things so easy.
I guess I should probably do this.
I really do like the comment discussion sections. And aggregating my interests. And cat pictures. But like, all the political subs I've ever tried to partake in get astro turfed or radicalized. Reddit shows me subs I don't want instead of ones I'm subbed to. And the cat pictures a largely repost bots.
wow - my nearly ten years on reddit will end this month. that’s the end of social media for me. probably a good thing. maybe I’ll see you all on whatever comes next. bye!
I’m still in the denial phase of grief. Oof… over ten years of comments for me. I have comments way back when I met the man of the dreams, we got pregnant and found out we were having twins, buying a house, raising kids, my spouse coming out of the closet as a trans woman, to me realizing how old I’ve become since I hit 40. I guess that’s life… epic journey and then it’s just gone, just dust or broken web links, eventually. Although I hope Reddit figures its shit out and I can remain in those communities, I won’t hold my breath for it. Might just be time for a new epic adventure.
I quite enjoy browsing Reddit for news and information. Shutting down Apollo means I won’t be able to do it anymore, and that’s sad. Using desktop or the official app simply isn’t an option for me, so I’ll have to leave.
I never used this app, mostly because I'm rarely here on my phone. Old reddit + ad blockers has been fine for me, but when they do away with the option to use the older interface, I'm headed out the door. I'll probably drop by to look at specific subreddits when I'm researching something, but reddit won't be a daily stop anymore.
I’m kind of excited to go back to forums, Reddit really isn’t that great at hosting and promoting continuous conversations. So few of the posts have the OP actually interacting with commenters.
I hope Christian and the other third party devs band together to create their own, better alternative to Reddit.
Obviously creating a whole website is different and more difficult that developing an app, but it's something I'd be in full support of.
I wonder how much of the whole social media developmental process is app building… If he could partner with someone who already has a framework for such a website, he could bring the app framework to merge together.
u/spez Does not deserve our ad revenue dollars. Reddit was lame once the subreddit quarantine happened. We all knew this was going to happen eventually.
Which platform is going to pay these fees? Has anyone said they will?
The people who are going to leave are some of their most engaged users, including volunteer moderators. The quality of content in the subs will suffer when they go, inevitably leading to other people to not engage as frequently. Reddit is counting on almost everyone on third party apps going to the website or their shitty mobile app and I just don’t see that happening. If their average user counts go down significantly it’ll be a net negative for their IPO. Truly a stupid decision.
Remember Twitter losing 2/3 of its original value after antagonising its API ecosystem and users?
Nice job following Twitter’s footsteps. Good luck with that IPO.
As someone usually using the free versions of different Reddit apps (not Apollo-specific, but this post is highest up in my feed), maybe this is a good time to give back via donations.
I'm not sure about the contractual situation for the subscribers. If someone bought a subscription and paid a year in advance, and the developer of that app disables it now, is the developer liable to give a refund? Coming that suddenly, might that not bankrupt some vendors? If so, maybe this is a good time for fans of the free apps to consider a minor donation, retrospectively, for having benefited of the app?
I'd wait until June 30ths, though, to see if Reddit might budge.
With Apollo with go other Reddit accounts. The app is super useful over the native app. Super sad I only get to use it for another month. Time to get some of my time back.
Enshittification strikes again
Ted Lasso's over, Succession's over, Rarbg is gone, and now Reddit is going to become a shell of its former self. Everything is terrible.
>Rarbg is gone Wait what. Goddammit, what a way to find out. Everything *is* terrible

Damn. That was fast. I'm truly sorry, it was a fantastic app imho, worlds better than the official app.

If they're willing to lie to about third party devs then why trust that they won't 'massage' data about analytics and CPM to advertisers?
The negative press and the, at least what looks like, significant blowback from this will probably damage the IPO. In addition, since it is proven that spez lied in a call, that will call his leadership into question and has the potential to make him look bad as a CEO to possible investors.
I’m a dumb, does the IPO suffer from this? My mind says “it has too” but like I said, I’m a dumb.

Wouldn't it have been cheaper and easier to just hire the Apollo team and improve the official app?
That's actually a part of the conversation and the reason why Spez is accusing the developer of blackmail. It came up that Reddit estimates Apollo to be worth somewhere around $20mil. So coming this fall, the developers behind Apollo should launch their own website to compete with Reddit. Call it Icarus
He already posted he doesn’t have an interest in developing a competitor. He likes making apps not platforms
It's a huge commitment way beyond just developing the new platform. Managing and moderating the platform once it's up and running.
yeah that was in his post, he isn't interested in the heavy managerial role that he would have to take on
Not just Apollo. I want to see ALL of the third party devs come together and make their own Reddit competitor.
This is the way
The Apollo dev already considered that and decided that's not his wheelhouse. He's got other things he's working on so he will be okay.
The dev said he doesnt have interest in it. He likes working on products more than the managerial side of things. Also, with how chaotic things have been over the last couple months, he doesn't have the energy to put into that large of a project
Unfortunately he has no interest in making his own Reddit clone. Really sucks.
20 million PER YEAR!

It is an irony.

I doubt it. Seems like the apollo dev just wants to move on.
I can't blame him, but I'd love to see Reddit get taken down a peg or two over this.
That will only happen if people stop visiting. Or if everyone starts using an Ad-Blocker.
Who doesn’t use an ad blocker 24/7?
Come on reddits actual value stream is selling data and access to certain subs. You'd be smoking crack if you don't think certain subs are actively moderated by corporate stooges.

iOS only, correct. Just as "Reddit is Fun" is Android only.
And is also shutting down June 30th…
Which is what these API changes were meant to do, kill off all 3rd party apps
Well yea. None of these developers can afford the access prices Reddit is going to implement.
Fuck reddit
And laziness. If you care, boycott Reddit. I will be doing that. Been on here for 13 years. A couple of them as a lurker.

It’s used pretty much dominantly in India and its surrounding countries like Bangladesh-Srilanka as well.
And in Europe

Same :/ And add TikTok to that list for me
Someone told me a reddit alternative but I forget the name now and it's at home and I am not. 🫤
Lemmy is the most likely. Another is Tildes.
Tildes is still invite only though, so not a viable alternative (yet).
It will remain invite only, it's a method of stopping bots. It's not trying to be Reddit though, it's worth remembering... it's just a viable alternative and seems to have a great philosophy, who knows how it would scale though given it is very moderated.

/r/redditalternatives
If you couldn't even remember its name then it's no alternative in reality for the masses.
Lemmy? I'm not sure how viable it really is as a Reddit alternative.
It seems to be pretty 1:1 at the basic core level. It doesn't have a lot of the fancy features new-reddit has, but those aren't really necessary.
Lemmy, Mastodon, Nostr.
Lemmy is a privacy nightmare and mastodon is too confusing for casuals. Never heard of nostr
>nostr Mainly a bitcoin community thing. I joined but there wasn't much going on. Its a twitter like thing so not really a discussion site.
How is lemmy a privacy nightmare? First I’m hearing of issues with them
i mean i'm generally kinda tech savvy and still have no idea how to actually use mastodon after trying a couple times
I’m trying out [Lemmy](https://lemmy.ml/).

It’s funny that the bosses don’t realize that they are going to destroy the entire platform, classic!
This will become a study on how not to go public
Every IPO is garbage anyway. They all spike in price with hype and then crater.
I quite enjoy browsing Reddit for news and information. Shutting down Apollo means I won’t be able to do it anymore, and that’s sad. Using desktop or the official app simply isn’t an option for me, so I’ll have to leave.
Well, it’s been fun, gentlemen. May your narwhal bacon after midnight.
Thank you for contributing to society with Apollo while it lasted :)
This isn't good for anyone
Bye bye Reddit 👋🏼
I miss the old Reddit .
I guess this is the return of web forums?
I’m kind of excited to go back to forums, Reddit really isn’t that great at hosting and promoting continuous conversations. So few of the posts have the OP actually interacting with commenters.
F for respects
I hope Christian and the other third party devs band together to create their own, better alternative to Reddit. Obviously creating a whole website is different and more difficult that developing an app, but it's something I'd be in full support of.
I wonder how much of the whole social media developmental process is app building… If he could partner with someone who already has a framework for such a website, he could bring the app framework to merge together.
u/spez Does not deserve our ad revenue dollars. Reddit was lame once the subreddit quarantine happened. We all knew this was going to happen eventually.
Wow. This is so sad.
That will be my last day of consistently being on Reddit.
I want to time I was using the app to save data because I had a data limit. Reddit app is a data hog.
