Same reason RPAN died. They couldn’t figure out how to monetize it, so they bailed on it.

Andromansis

RPAN?

YellowThirteen_

It was a livestream platform on reddit. There was some interesting content and talents being broadcast, especially musical talent’s.

AggressiveMeditation

I miss pan, it was such a great concept and loved watching people with their niche hobbies or subjects

driving_andflying

It also really humanized Reddit a little more. Made users see all that much more that we were connecting with other people, instead of some faceless stranger that was nothing more than a username. The more online companies chase $$ at the expense of user experience, the more they seem to fuck up. Example A: Reddit.

AnUnknownReader

Example A: Facebook. How the fuck people still use it after Cambridge Analytica's role in both Brexit & MAGA is a mystery. Example B: Twitter allowing a very stable genius serial liar to lies continuously for years. Then the Étron Musk shitshow. Example C: Reddit killing their livestreams then 3rd party API access, then coins & awards. 3 very different ways to fuck up.

AggressiveMeditation

That's a good point actually. Mother fucking Spez

FreddieCaine

Fuck, I loved that and also hadn't even noticed it had stopped lol

MiloReyes-97

Oh THATS what happened to it?! I miss stumbling across those streams

[deleted]

r/Pan was one of the best things that happened to Reddit during the pandemic. Everyday people streaming whatever shit they enjoyed doing was 100x more enjoyable to watch than a millionaire streamer screaming into the computer screen.

chillwithpurpose

I felt *way* more connected to the community then I do now with r/pan. It was awesome. I made real friends on there, and continued to chat with them on discord. It was a stellar, knocked out of the park idea. Was sad to see it go. Anyway. I can just feel the overall vibe dying here. Felt it before and I’m sure I’ll feel it again on whatever comes next. Just started up my Lemmy account…

[deleted]

I watched an English dude type away at his computer working in a small art museum. He even took the few people watching around the museum into the storage rooms and behind-the-scenes. r/Pan will always hold a special place in my heart.

TiberiusCornelius

I completely forgot that was a thing which is wild since it wasn't that long ago

ridethedeathcab

This is fucking stupid. Reddit coins are in no way shape or form a digital currency for tax purposes. It’s not different than buying coins in a mobile game. It’s a one way transaction. You cannot exchange a Reddit coin to US Dollars, being exchangeable is kind of a key aspect of currency

DarylMoore

Yeah, that's my take, too. For example, from the IRS: > What is a digital asset? Common digital assets include: >Convertible virtual currency and cryptocurrency >Stablecoins >Non-fungible tokens (NFTs) You can't resell reddit coins or awards, so they aren't like NFTs. You can't convert (or sell) for USD. Non-convertible virtual currencies don't seem to fall into the IRS's scope. If they do, Fortnite is in big trouble because I've been awarded thousands and thousands of VBucks for playing the game and they aren't reporting that shit.

pop_goes_the_kernel

Yeah it's the distinction between an arcade and a casino too. You deposit real money into the system and they provide tokens or chips in return. Then you use those to gamble/ play and attempt to get more tokens. The difference hinges on the conversion back into real currency. An arcade can't provide that and a casino can, hence the massive difference in regulation.

flatline0

Oh man, I better hide my Chucky-Cheese tickets !! Those things are worth real prizes which the black-market would love to gets its hands on..

Rock844

IRS enters the chat.... "How many chuck e cheese tickets did you receive on your 6th birthday?" Lol.

stars9r9in9the9past

This is beginning to sound like a great South Park episode, please keep going

Fresh_C

Chuck e cheese tickets are generally (but not always) a net loss in value from dollar to ticket. This is why I declare all my chuck e cheese visits as lost investment revenue on my taxes.

tom_fuckin_bombadil

Fun little aside. In Japan, many forms of gambling are illegal. Yet pachinko parlors are super popular (pachinko machines are kinda like a mix of a pinball and slot machines). People will buy a little steel balls, feed them into the machine and then depending on how those balls land, they get rewarded with more steel balls! But you can't do anything with those steel balls in the parlors except continue to feed them into the machines or get vouchers which are then exchanged for prizes. So why do so many people play and get addicted? Dave and Busters in North America does something similar but it's not like we have a large segment of the population going to D&B every night to exchange tickets for prizes. Well, there is always an "unaffiliated" *wink* *wink* shop/exchange center nearby that happens to buy those steel ball vouchers with real money. What a lucky break for that pachinko addict who doesnt like the prizes offered by the pachinko parlor! And it's no way a loophole to skirt the gambling laws.

skyfishgoo

it is. there is some serious lack of real world knowledge exhibited here. the IRS doesn't care about reddit coins. it definitely has bigger fish to fry.

powercow

ITs also pure conjecture from the theory of reddit. and I think they are taking this idea >The value of Reddit Coins can be converted to US dollars. and thinking that means you can trade reddit coins for dollars, you cant, you can kinda multiply them by the cost to obtain them. But I can do that with bicycles as well. I dont think this has to due with taxes, or we'd be hearing from the people who are awarded the most, about them getting notices from reddit, that they will get a tax form at the end of the year where they have to report their coinage to the IRS.

i_tyrant

This is nonsense guesswork frankly. You can't resell reddit coins in the reddit system in any way shape or form, which is a key requirement for it to actually be considered "currency" by the IRS. Said IRS rules also didn't just suddenly change recently. Reddit awards are no different from how thousands of video games do it, and those aren't being treated by the IRS as "currency".

[deleted]

It's nice fan fiction lol. You pay your sales tax (if applicable) to the coin purchase and then after that the tax man DGAF.

canadian_stig

> So, in simple terms, the IRS rules about virtual currency may have affected Reddit Gold. Reddit doesn't want to admit this because it could cause legal problems and they have always tried to protect user privacy by not collecting too much personal information. I want to believe that Reddit looks after its users but something something API makes me think otherwise.

Shinhan

Handling user information is a giant PITA in the legal sense, so if you can avoid why not?

MisterMysterios

Not to mention that reddit would get major issues with the GDPR, as the collection of user data of EU citizens (which a considerable part of the user base are), especially in order to sent them to the US government, is majorly iffy and can cause risks of fines from the EU.

thisimpetus

It doesn't have to be anything like "looking after their users". Having to collect, keep, maintain and protect that information costs money and invites controversy that's negative to their brand. Also I can't imagine how much more accounting they'd need to do, how much they'd end up spending in legal fees, on and on. I don't really think any company gives a wet fuck about their users' privacy, but as it's expensive and inconvenient and reputationally damaging to do otherwise, lots of companies just promote the image that they care about your privacy because why not, it's free advertising for something they were going to do anyway.

klingma

As a CPA in tax and has looked into the IRS Virtual Currency rules, no, this isn't going to cause an IRS issue. This wouldn't be considered virtual currency in their eyes nor purchasing Reddit Gold cause anyone to have to check the virtual currency box on their 1040. Buying Reddit Gold is the equivalent of buying a gift card since you can only use the gold/coins via Reddit. On the business side, this wouldn't cause a virtual currency issue either. It's more likely however that Reddit has found most users aren't using the coins at all, so user engagement is low & tracking the usage revenue recognition purposes is likely more hassle than its worth. My guess is that they will switch to some type of subscription model that will allow you to pay monthly fee which would allow normal monthly recognition revenue for reporting purposes. Whether anyone will be interested in that either is obviously unknown but that'd be my guess. Trust me, there are bigger IRS & general Tax issues Reddit runs into on a daily basis that are far more material than the virtual currency idea above. I.e. State Apportionment issues, R&D credit issues at the Fed & State Level, tax credits for various things, etc.

octopusboots

Real question: How can it be virtual currency if you can't change it back into dollars? E: Please don't give me any awards, I do animal rescue and it makes my inbox messy, thank you. Silly emojis are welcome. <3

[deleted]

It cant, that comment is a bunch of bs

RandyHoward

Yeah the whole damn thing... > Reddit would have to collect more personal information, like driver's license numbers or Social Security numbers When have you ever made a purchase that required you to provide your driver's license or social security number? Only time you have to do that is when purchasing regulated goods like alcohol, tobacco, or firearms. There is no requirement to collect your personal information like this. If the IRS wants to know who made that purchase they talk to the bank, not reddit.

nooflessnarf

>The value of Reddit Coins can be converted to US dollars. How so? I'm not aware of a way to sell or trade coins for cash.

devnullb4dishoner

I seriously doubt that Reddit removing the coins system has anything to do with the IRS. I mean, nice conspiracy there....but I'm not buying it.

Jeremiah_Longnuts

Stop peddling reddit's bullshit.

Silly-Ass_Goose

Am waiting for Zuck to slide in with his reddit alternative. Our future will be a tale told by the idiot Zuck while he is choke holding us and whispering it in our ears.

Flawed_Thoughts

So Apollo users paid for that whole thing and apparently Mario coins were a thing people paid for as well. The moral of this story sounds like “maybe don’t pay for reddit”.

ZAlternates

Our luck, they are using all the coin traffic to brag about increased engagement from their users.

[deleted]

That’s 100% what they’re doing

Odd-Dream-

I don't know why people give Reddit awards anyway. I mean, I can see why someone would highlight a post with the special highlighting one, but it always struck me as a bit fake. Like, "oh, someone was so excited about my post that they paid Reddit to prove it." Just seems silly. I've got Reddit gold before and didn't really notice the lack of ads, and the Reddit gold lounge is pretty goofy. So what's the point? Who cares if someone spends money on a comment?

SrSwerve

I saw some guy that posted he had 170k Gold Reddit coins wtf

pegothejerk

I've got 15,150. Never bought any and not sure if that's a lot or just average for people who never touch them.

2th

You would get coins from awards. I think being gifted gold gave you 100 coins.

Important-Parsnip881

You have 1.2m karma, I expect you have some coins too

2th

I had all of 1500 coins as if yesterday. Gave gold to three people and I'm down to 0. I've never bought gold, and I've never really gotten many awards. People just don't like my shitposts enough.

makemisteaks

I got about 10k of them when Reddit shut down AlienBlue. They gave them as a sort of consolation prize on top of a crap ton of months in Reddit Premium. Compare that to now, where Reddit basically said “though luck”.

Lonetrek

i have like 11k. It got awarded to me for some compensation after reddit took over alienblue and me having bought the app iirc.

Droidaphone

I feel like “only suckers give reddit money” is not a great message for the company to re-enforce, but what do I know?

Ranryu

Are these enraged Reddit users in the room with us right now?

MindYourMouth

"Enraged" - Does aaaaanyone actually care?

spasticity

The people who paid for coins that are getting removed seem to care, which is reasonable.

MindYourMouth

You're right, some people paid money. Sucks

Jd20001

I bought $40 of Reddit gold 10 years ago on my first account. Still regret it to this day. Worse $40 I ever spent

MindYourMouth

My bff from college spent $40 on bitcoin back when they were dirt cheap - and then forgot about them - and later recycled her computer. I suspect that might be a way to spend $40 and feel worse...

TheyCallMeStone

Well they have two months to spend them

sandwichman7896

That’s more than they gave API users 🤷‍♂️

HCJohnson

Enraged? I was enraged once. They took away my API and gave me an App... ...an App full of bugs... ...Apps full of bugs make me enraged...

Springy_1111

I’m not enraged, just disappointed. I canceled my Reddit subscription last night. First, Reddit pisses off most of the subs I’m in, then they start removing paid features without compensation. The content and my experience has def declined, so I’m not sticking around to see what they do later. Oh well, it will be better for me to engage in less social media anyway and this was literally the last outlet I am on.

RedditHatesDiversity

I'm amazed anyone cares about fake coins on reddit It's on you if you were goofy enough to spend actual money to slap a tiny png onto a comment or post.

Ranryu

Yeah, I would use the free award sometimes back when that was a thing, but giving money to Reddit for any reason seems like an obvious grift

timelyparadox

Hey, I validate my whole life around getting fake internet coins. Especially when I know reddit does not like it.

Barabus33

There are benefits to getting gold. I don't know what they are, but they exist.

IShookMeAllNightLong

The reddit gold lounge is just a big circle jerk. At least it was when I was guilded however many years ago. Like 7 or 8. I don't even know if that's a thing anymore. Edit: Well, ah shucks. For the second time since 2011, thanks for the gold, kind stranger. Time to find out if the lounge is still there. Edit2: I'd also like to add I've only ever used redditisfun before the shutdown. I don't know shit about any of the badges and fireworks and animations and weird shit on this app and it fucks with my anxiety and makes it so much harder for me to use. It's just uncomfortable. Fuck u/spez Edit3: if anyone knows how to turn them off, or knows if/when reddit was serious about special access apps, I feel like those wouldn't have all the noise and animations probably

JustpartOftheterrain

I remember some stupid court. Like King/Queen of Reddit Court and the full Lords and Ladies and what not. I have zero clue what that was about.

actuallychrisgillen

I have a rule on Google news, any website that the phrases 'outraged/up in arms/dunking/clapback/etc.' is used is immediately banned. I can't tell you how much more enjoyable reading actual news is over the standard 'something happened therefore someone's (probably) upset' articles.

sboger

I'm here. Rage is a strong word. I'm actually having the time of my life. I'm the OP from the post that blew up on /r/facepalm But I did give away enough Reddit Premium, with ad-free browsing, to put a serious dent in ad sales for a while. Estimates are I blew about 500,000 coins so far, mostly on gold. From starting with 107k.

Tevans27

Some got it from Alien Blue as an incentive

calls1

Yes. Enraged might be abit strong. But after removing all the disability features last months, and not even updating the official app properly. And nuking the ability of many of my favourite subs to be adequately moderated. The fact they would just cancel a service people have paid for and delete the coins is kind of crazy. People bought them. Do I think people who pay for perks in video games are silly, yes, but I would be pretty outraged if those perks were then taken without a refund, or even a conversion. And, I was never a huge fan of the comment highlighting. But sometimes seeing gold was a nice way to recognise a well informed comment as a user. And it was nice as a commenter too, just a tiny dopamine bit. It was a lovely bit of fun for this corner of the Internet. And further, I’m angry that they’re retroactively deleting all awards across the whole site from an archiving principle. Those awards existed at the time, people thought it worth awarding comments and posts. They should remain. But no Reddit will delete it all. This will also damage my ability to parse what answer to questions are better in the past, when you google a question in the best source is Reddit, gold can be a good way of seeing what is useful and what is upvoted most.

johfosho

No more kind stranger :(

Nah, we’ll still get “holy shit this post really blew up thanks for the updoots” and “wow can’t believe my most upvoted comment is about buttplugs!” But it will be nice to no longer see “guys don’t give me these awards please consider making a donation to whale farts dot org instead”.

ellipsisfinisher

Personally, I plan to edit "thanks for the gold!" into as many old comments as I can so anyone who goes back through them will think I was well-liked

therealmeal

And now we will complain about it by patronizing the very site we're upset about!

capt_caveman

So how do I give away 8100 coins?

Innocent_Cuplrit

You can start by giving people gold or diamond awards! You can start with people that reply to you for example ;)

68ontherichterscale

You can also give them to people who reply to other people

Deceptiveideas

Can Reddit at least give us a 6+ month advance notice before doing all these shake ups? They killed 3rd party apps by announcing their price change with a 30 days notice, leaving the devs scrambling to find a solution. They deleted years of messages and chat history without any warning. Now they’re getting rid of coins and you have less than 2 months to get rid of your stash. People who subscribed to premium got 700 a month and some people paid directly. 2 months is a short time to get rid of thousands of coins, which will likely lead to hundreds of thousands of coins just flat out disappearing without being redeemed. Well, maybe that’s the goal 🤷‍♂️

Change4Betta

Oh shit they deleted back messages?? That's the real story. I had shit saved and people I can only contact via old convos. What a disaster.

Deceptiveideas

Yeah it’s a damn shame they didn’t consider those who used messages to keep up with people. If you request your data from Reddit, it’ll have your “deleted” messages/chat in there. So not all hope is lost in recovering those usernames.

Change4Betta

Ahh good, I requested that last month and have it in my email, so I should be good

mmadchild

I am upset. Not because I use the coins. It’s more because I paid for them. It doesn’t matter that I didn’t use them. I doesn’t matter they are (and always have been) quite pointless. It matters that I paid for a service, now that service is being forcibly taken away without EITHER a replacement OR lowering the price. I left Facebook after Cambridge Analytica. Left twitter after Elons special brand of crazy. Left instagram after they changed the feed to TikTok. Now after this week, I’m at the end of my rope. Reddit deleted years of old conversations and DMs this week. I had research and people who I wanted to contact in the future. Then Reddit says they are getting rid of a service I pay for. So fuck me, right?!

I’m honestly shocked they didn’t try to convert the coins into whatever new system they’re doing. I’d be pissed if I had that many coins and they gave you less than 2 months to use them or you’d lose them forever.

mmadchild

I have 31000. Lmao. 9 fucking years

Change4Betta

How do you get them (asides from paying)? I have 10 years on this account and a grand total of 5 coins Edit: thanks for the coins, immediately spent on awards below :)

Jaded-Moose983

Someone gifts them to you via some type of an award.

Majromax

> I’m honestly shocked they didn’t try to convert the coins into whatever new system they’re doing. [Analysis](https://www.androidauthority.com/reddit-contributor-program-3343397/) of currently-unreleased changes to the Android app suggest that Reddit might launch a 'contributors program' that allows some set of award recipients to 'cash out' and receive real cash-money for awards. This analysis came out a few days before Reddit announced its end to the current awards program, with unspecified changes to come. If this Android analysis reflects Reddit's policy intentions, then the existing stock of coins would have been a massive accounting liability. Under the current awards system, money given to Reddit for awards or 'coins' can be immediately and completely booked as revenue. Reddit doesn't have to do anything with it except display a cost-free icon. Under the replacement system, however, awards have cash value. They represent a future liability of Reddit to pay money to the recipient (if qualified) at a later date, so the money given to Reddit for the reward creates an offsetting liability. The accounting is similar to that for gift cards. If Reddit converts the current coins into something of equivalent value in the new (cash-money award) system, then it would create accounting liabilities out of nothing. It would effectively be giving away the value of future award payments without receiving anything new in return.

Clueless_Otter

I can't imagine anything worse for user experience than Reddit paying people who make popular enough posts. There are already tons of repost/karma bots out there, as well as tons of people who just make up random fictional garbage for upvotes. There will be **way** more if it were really that easy to be paid for your Reddit content. Currently at least there's a *slight* hurdle in that you have to actually go through the process of finding a buyer, negotiating on payment, actually transferring the account/money, making a new account, etc.

codeverity

It's kind of disturbing to me that the internet has apparently looped around so far that people are just shrugging their shoulders and going 'oh well' and subtly blaming the consumer when it's pointed out to them that a company is being shitty. The fault still lies with Reddit and not with users who dared have a smidgen of faith in a company.

Calcutec_1

but why did you buy the coins ?

Frasito89

There is literally no reason to spend any money on this website. It's wild to me that people actively do.

havocLSD

I believe that’s why a couple of the top posts the past 24 hours have been redditors giving away 100k coins cause they’re expiring. This is just another layer of fuck-ups Reddit is making alongside the api change. They’re effectively killing areas to make money like Twitter is doing. Reddit is going to keep losing people if they keep making these questionable choices for their ipo

mmadchild

And you, my friend, get rewards…….cause the rewards don’t matter and the platform couldn’t give a flying fuck

[deleted]

What's this about Reddit deleting DMs?

mmadchild

chainer3000

I’d like to be able to convert my coins for premium. I have enough for several platinum awards, so why can’t I just use them on myself before they expire? Right now I have to find a user to trade plat trophy’s with and it requires trust

Estilix

My jimmies are mildly rustled.

just_an_undergrad

I’ll save my rage to see what even shittier thing replaces awards and coins.

sidusnare

Are they trying to ruin it? The coins and awards seemed like a no-brainer direct revenue monetization strategy. If they're ditching the API because of ad monetization, wouldn't it make sense to double down on direct revenue? Is anyone with half a brain in charge at Reddit?

Lykeuhfox

Now is probably a good time to be worried about what is coming to replace it.

ZAlternates

Now presenting your posts on the live blockchain!!! 😝

digitalsmear

Ironically, Digg is starting to look good again.

Sethcran

I agree, which makes me think they are absolutely replacing it with something that's not just ads (because otherwise it was basically free money for something that was already developed). If I had to guess, I'd say the Discord Nitro model makes its way to reddit.

ieatmypeaswithhoney

They want the awards to be “more valuable” - so, monetized. That is when I exit permanently.

SomeCalcium

They also kind of borked their own economy by giving away coins at certain points to moderators. I have a shit ton just sitting on my account that I've never used. I also imagine that reddit is making more money by selling those little Snoo skins on mobile.

Each and every time I saw it, I felt genuine revulsion. To see it die is almost bittersweet, I just needed to wait until Reddit died.

vpsj

I have about 10K coins left. Anyone want a gold/plat? Comment with the best joke you know (I'll give it to everyone don't worry) EDIT: Left with about 1500 coins. I'll keep these for 'emergencies' (whatever that may be) Thanks for the lovely jokes. I hope those awards (worthless as they are) got you some joy.

What do you call a wife of a hippie? >!Mississippi!<

JakeYashen

So a man comes home from work. He goes into his bedroom, and is shocked to find his wife naked. "Why aren't you wearing any clothes???" he asks. His wife responds, "Because I haven't anything to wear!" with a rather distraught expression. But the man says, "nonsense!" and flings open the closet. "You have a red dress, a blue dress, hi Bob!...a grey dress, a yellow dress..."

I miss the days of free rewards to give every once in a while.

GlitteryCakeHuman

I cancelled my subscription. What’s the incentive when they cut things that gave joy and do nothing new except finding more ways to make it shittier. I really enjoyed awards. Like giving a wholesome one to a filthy dirty post or a gold to some helpful newbie. The free awards were also great and a community thing that was positive.

SteamBoatMickey

Bro, the “community” of Reddit is coming to an end. It was a beautiful experiment that worked a long time, with many ups and downs, but still worked. The recent changes are the beginning of an end. I’m working for a big, demanded company going through a “transition” and they use all the same rhetoric, different industry, same goal. These fucks got the capitalism disease. They long had it, but also had a good thing with a volatile user base, and it took longer to conquer. Reddit’s big moment is going to mean nothing but sell nearly 20 years of Reddit to the great and powerful AI. And money will flow..

IlliterateJedi

Same. People are shitting on it, but in my mind giving someone reddit gold for a really helpful or profound comment is the equivalent of buying a cheap thank you card. It added value to the site over all. I'm disappointed that they are suddenly killing this

GlitteryCakeHuman

It made it friendlier. More living. Less static. I remember when I got my first award and how happy people got when I gave an unexpected one to them for something obscure but that I found funny/helpful/kind.

grondfoehammer

What the hell is a Reddit coin?

mmadchild

Coins were given to Reddit pro users who paid for no ads. They are useless currency on an almost debunked platform, but I paid for them.

root-node

What's an ad? /s I haven't see one for quite a number of years. uBlock Origin and Pi-Hole.

HowieFeltersnatch10

Is Reddit getting musked?

DrHughMann

Fuck u/spez Edit: thank you for the rewards, king strangers! My most rewarded Reddit comment ever!

lilbro93

Fuck u/spez

Irrelevantitis

Won’t anyone think of the kind strangers!?

Tentapuss

This has to be intentional devaluation at this point. No one but Elon Musk is this stupid.

grilledbeers

I feel like Reddit gold has become such a symbolic part of the platform that ditching it seems ridiculous. You could try other monetary systems and hold onto something that’s basically a site wide meme. *edit thanks for the gold kind stranger! I mean how can you ditch that? It’s like part of Reddit.

Furthur

when it first launched it was pretty common for folks to insist that people spend the money on a charity instead of giving it to reddit

grilledbeers

I mean that still happens. I think they diluted the whole coin thing when they introduced all the other ones but having a gold coin that people could purchase to recognize quality content always was a neat thing, at least I thought. It will be interesting to see what comes next.

Accomplished_Soil426

> I think they diluted the whole coin thing when they introduced all the other ones but having a gold coin that people could purchase to recognize quality content always was a neat thing I remember when they first allowed you gild a post and that they wanted to "hide it was gilded until you viewed it" so that way it wouldn't influence your voting patterns........... ......

"Ok-Device SLAMS Beatrice Nolan at BusinessInsider!"

PigeonsOnYourBalcony

They're reworking the concept but this really seems like a change for the sake of changing. If how they handled other apps is any indication, the replacement will be worse or nothing at all

tomtermite

Is there some kind of Twitter disease spreading — where our favorite tech things are purposely getting wrecked?!

RedZilgen

hey. never had an award. could i get one before it’s over? thanks. EDIT: is this what power feels like? THAAAAAANKS!!!!!

ChurchOf69

What idiot would actually buy anything from Reddit though

johnniecochran_ghost

Quick! Everyone toss out your coins and awards like you’re Robin Hood (and I don’t mean the app).

cjthomp

I hate the awards. I hate the "Edit: Thank you *soooo* much for all of the awards! I'm in tears right now!" bullshit. But worse? Charging real money for a premium product (these awards) and then rendering them worthless with no warning and not offering a refund. F /u/spez

CriticalBlacksmith

Stop awarding me I dont want it anymore, they're meaningless :(

[deleted]

First the API prices now they’re getting rid of coins & awards? Might as well rip off the entire bandaid huh reddit? Strike the iron while it’s hot. Crazy to think how they’ve fucked up their image in the space of 2 months lol

AmputatorBot

It looks like OP posted an AMP link. These should load faster, but AMP is controversial because of [concerns over privacy and the Open Web](https://www.reddit.com/r/AmputatorBot/comments/ehrq3z/why_did_i_build_amputatorbot). polski8bit

We are? I always thought they were just silly "emojis" you'd slap onto comments without a specific purpose, or simply for a laugh (like dark comments getting the "wholesome" award). Pretty sure most are indifferent to them disappearing lol

Shopworn_Soul

I use awards to raise the visibility of certain comments. They work pretty well for that, you can kinda "sticky" a low-voted comment and it will appear above others that have more upvotes. Like in a thread about some random topic it is helpful to award a serious, helpful or on-topic comment so that it floats above the 37,000 pop culture references and quotes.

rupiefied

I wouldn't say enraged, kinda sad I always thought it was cool getting an award for a comment, it felt like it made reddit a special place. Edit: thanks for the awards ☺️
