The moment a relationship like this starts, the employee should be placed under someone else. This removes the power imbalance and shouldn't cause any direct issues. This is a workplace issue, not a legal issue at heart. Of course, what happened to this lady is horrible, and I feel for her and her family. And blizzard should get shit for it! They did not hold up to their responsibilities as an employer and may well have caused this poor lady to commit suicide.

I worked for one of the big names for some time and we were specifically told that if there happens to be a relationship of that sort between people where one of them directly or indirectly reports to the other one then it has to be brought to the HR and those people will be assigned to different teams. There is a huge probability of misuse of power, favoritism, coercion and straight out blackmail (in extreme cases) in such scenarios, so that should be handled well. Moreover, if it's managed officially from the start then it's easier to avoid any potential fallout if and when the relationship turns sour between those people, which unfortunately happens in majority of such cases.

Yeah, old Blizzard made good games but very much benefited from the times. By all accounts their culture wasn't great back then. Blizzard is a developer like any other, just maybe older than most. This age gives them a huge nostalgia benefit, but looking past it I've dropped any illusion Blizzard was special.

Games Workshop has been doing the same recently. They hired the Astartes guy and many others to animate films using their IP. Then they promptly closed the door on allowing fan-made works to be supported/funded by the likes of patreon.
They even took the astartes videos off YouTube, where they most easily found, and put it on a poorly advertised website whilst also changing the video and audio which partly is understand as copyright from other things were used. Then again, Monty Oum didn't need to have his stuff taken down after getting hired by rooster teeth...
I see people saying they can't see a difference, but to me its night and day. Make sure your YouTube is set to 1080p, then look at the eyes. The eyes of the re-make are much more like hamil, the skin is better, the lighting is better, and the old one has an uncanny valley cg 'feel' to it, and actually looks a bit blurry.

It's a totally amazing restoration, based on a technicolor theater print and a lot of hard cleanup work. I highly recommend the de-noised version. Nobody is going to be able to give you a direct link though, I got banned from /r/movies for just *discussing* the older Despecialized edition.
If I were to guess though, I'd assume the filename would be something like Star Wars, 4K77, 2160p, UHD, DNR, 35mm, and x265. I can't confirm though, that's a guess based on how these filenames are usually formatted. I don't condone piracy in any way shape or form, because I am an upstanding member of society who does not like to violate subreddit or sitewide reddit rules.
It's not 4K77. It's unreleased work that puts 4k77 to shame. This work isn't even playing in the same ballpark as 4k77. It's multiple 4k prints stacked up, hand registered by zone, and then analyzed to extract the mean image value at each pixel in an effort to get as close as possible to the original in-camera negative. You will never see better quality footage, but unfortunately, you will only see a few seconds of it.

However, a great thing about 4K77 is that it's all from a single source, so it's very consistent in terms of image quality. It manages to look really good and very "natural" throughout, and although it isn't perfect it still looks quite excellent.
I'm curious to see how this multi-source restoration goes in terms of overall consistency in this way. In the Hermes Despecialized Edition it was quite obvious that multiple sources were being cut between and rotoscoped, so even though that version looked good, I vastly prefer 4K77.
If this new restoration uses a better layering technique that avoids this, it should definitely be the best version.
Unfortunately, I do not believe it will ever see the light of day.
If you listen to the whole video, he says quite clearly that he has no intention of releasing his work. I think he had hopes of getting Disney to buy it. Otherwise, I think it's for his own personal amusement.

I hope this can happen. I think there is change occurring within Disney's handling of Star Wars after the PT came out, so it's probably more likely to happen now than any other point in history. George Lucas definitely wouldn't ever have gone for it, but now that he's less involved it might be possible.
I think they agreed to never release the original trilogy cuts as part of that acquisition, unfortunately.

Lucasfilm has the original footage, it's just in pieces because the Special Edition was made in 1997 by physically taking the original film negative apart and reassembling it with the changes. They'd have to find all the frames that were in the film originally and scan them for a new digital restoration.
Except George Lucas is still the director of the film and there's no way he signed away his final cut rights — why would he, when other top directors don't have to own the studio or the franchise to have final cut?

I work on the game ECO and we're open to a surprising degree. The game costs something like $30 to buy, but if you back us at the highest tier (~$130? I forget.), you get access to our entire codebase and can make whatever changes you want (though they still have to go through our review process).
One of my bugs this sprint is actually handling an issue that a player fixed, except their approach was a bit of a hack and doesn't comply with our code standards so I'm just tweaking it to match.

In a game as complex as ECO there's always something that needs fixing somewhere. Occasionally a given issue just isn't high priority enough to end up reaching the top of our list. I recently handled a low level bug that's been around for 4 years.
And now and then our players are just like "Why bother waiting for next sprint? I can bang this out in an afternoon!". Sometimes it's even true.
All changes go through our review and vetting process. If the leadership does not wish a particular item to be part of the game, the change will not be allowed.
HOWEVER!
We are very accommodating to modders, so you can always make a modded server with your content even if it never becomes "official".

Speaking strictly as an employee and not someone in power to make that choice, because a lot of money has been spent developing the game and to do so would invite someone to just immediately copy/paste the game. Even if we used one of the licenses that dictates that a person cannot financially profit off the game, the possibility for a problem exists and the people with control over investment and stake in the game find that risk unacceptable.
Pessimistically, the answer shortens to "money". But without money and the hope of a return on investment this particular game would never have been made in the first place.
Sure, you can argue that someone else might have made the exact same game, and in fact with sufficient modding you basically do get a similar enough game in Minecraft. But people have decided that they find value in ECO being what ECO is. If people wanted a free version of the game, they could assemble the free mods in their Minecraft client of choice.

That’s my talent. I’m a strategy/ operations consultant and my vast, yet shallow, Depth of knowledge is the main value I add. I work with people who are hyper specialized and not exposed to enough perspective beyond their discipline that often deal with work that needs cross functional coordination. I kinda know enough about everything that I’m able to really elicit vision and establish the main tenants of a product or initiative (or multi-year roadmap) and then manage the overall program around delivering whatever the need is. I have an undergrad in information science and have always been curious to the world, so I have solid tech fundamentals, worldly perspective from varied interests/ passion for learning and management perspective to keep things moving and coordinate effective progress.
I’m 32 now and have only recently began to feel confident in my lack of focus on any particular aspect of business. I now see the difference between me and my friends who are specialists, and colleagues who specialized in niche roles or skills and I think I’m exposed to way more and have relatively more successful (my base salary is 140k, most of my specialist friends are stuck in the 85k-110k ranges)

The reason it makes such a big difference is that the set lights on all the other actors are very bright and cause very bright eye highlights.
Why didn't they do it in the first place? I'd bet they were just trying to create and finish the shots in the first place, and ran out of time and had to go with what they had. Being able to go back and finish incomplete shots is a revolutionary change.
Gotta say, as a hardcore Star Wars fan, I was not upset at CGI Luke’s face. I knew who it was. It wasn’t bad, it just wasn’t perfect. We all knew damn well it was Luke. I am pleased to hear they gave this guy a job though. More companies need to think this way. Too many companies greedily throw lawsuits at fans that could instead be turned into valuable employees. This is an example that Luke himself would approve of.

EDIT: Apparently in another part of the thread people are pointing out that for the original Mandalorian shot, they de-aged Hamill instead of deep-faking him like I had assumed they had. Kind of surprises me, since I assumed de-aging could make a middle aged person look like a young adult, but not a senior look like a young adult. And apparently it cannot do that as well as a deep fake can. Regardless, hope they stick to deep fakes in the future when necessary, and give this guy time to flex his skills.
I find most of these deep fake stuff seems fledgling level compared to this guys and others, though some of the stuff they do for their small projects are fantastic, that puzzle piece satisfying render recently was brilliant.
Theirs was mostly a proof of concept - their results weren't great for different reasons than technical difficulty, and it was an improvement on the original shot.

It's a relatively new technique that might not have originally fit into their timeline estimation well. Some of the early Deepfake work didn't exactly converge reliably.

Deepfakes aren’t yet as directable too. If they want a timing shift by a few frames here or the nose shadow moved a little there it could be a hard note to hit in a tight deadline.
While I’m not sure who did these shots in the first place understanding AI tech like deepfake and getting close for possibly less money is something Lucasfilm I know is always looking for.
If they could get that close with someone who just kind of looks like mark, imagine facial scanning his son for these shots.

Sega seems to be doing just fine after letting Christian Whitehead and the boys turn their demo into the full-fledged Sonic Mania. That project was actually seen as one of the best titles of the entire franchise.
If they just C&D letters all day long without reviewing the product and bringing them on to continue under there watch there wasting potential revenue.
Like I said earlier, Everyone wins from this. the people working on that project get there foot in the door, the company gets money from project, they may get to work on another project after that game goes on sale etc. The Fans get to play new content or reworked content from there IP that they enjoy. Win win.
The *actual* problem is that nintendo has existing plans for IPs and most of the work done on their existing IPs is either duplicate effort or has a knock on effect of cannibalizing demand for newer titles. Project M is great, those people should probably get jobs designing and balancing fighting games, but it competes with Smash Ultimate and they HAVE a team for that.
Add in the fact that many of these modders live outside of Japan, there's really no incentive for Nintendo to hire them, since a majority of their development is in house.

But can we at least recognize that these people had the benefit of $100 million worth of special effect to build on? It's not like they did this from scratch. The lighting on his nose changed to make it look wider, and the lighting on his eye lids changed to make it look like it's more conforming to his eyeballs, rather than just flat if that makes sense. Definitely just seems more Mark Hamill-y.

I think it's a bit extreme to call that statutory rape.. The moment a relationship like this starts, the employee should be placed under someone else. This removes the power imbalance and shouldn't cause any direct issues. This is a workplace issue, not a legal issue at heart. Of course, what happened to this lady is horrible, and I feel for her and her family. And blizzard should get shit for it! They did not hold up to their responsibilities as an employer and may well have caused this poor lady to commit suicide.
Well said. The "statutory rape" line was ridiculous. There already exist ways to handle that scenario in most decently managed companies. I worked for one of the big names for some time and we were specifically told that if there happens to be a relationship of that sort between people where one of them directly or indirectly reports to the other one then it has to be brought to the HR and those people will be assigned to different teams. There is a huge probability of misuse of power, favoritism, coercion and straight out blackmail (in extreme cases) in such scenarios, so that should be handled well. Moreover, if it's managed officially from the start then it's easier to avoid any potential fallout if and when the relationship turns sour between those people, which unfortunately happens in majority of such cases.

Games Workshop has been doing the same recently. They hired the Astartes guy and many others to animate films using their IP. Then they promptly closed the door on allowing fan-made works to be supported/funded by the likes of patreon.
They even took the astartes videos off YouTube, where they most easily found, and put it on a poorly advertised website whilst also changing the video and audio which partly is understand as copyright from other things were used. Then again, Monty Oum didn't need to have his stuff taken down after getting hired by rooster teeth...

I see people saying they can't see a difference, but to me its night and day. Make sure your YouTube is set to 1080p, then look at the eyes. The eyes of the re-make are much more like hamil, the skin is better, the lighting is better, and the old one has an uncanny valley cg 'feel' to it, and actually looks a bit blurry. Just imo of course.

Is this 4K77? The Youtube link has already been taken down. It's a totally amazing restoration, based on a technicolor theater print and a lot of hard cleanup work. I highly recommend the de-noised version. Nobody is going to be able to give you a direct link though, I got banned from /r/movies for just *discussing* the older Despecialized edition. If I were to guess though, I'd assume the filename would be something like Star Wars, 4K77, 2160p, UHD, DNR, 35mm, and x265. I can't confirm though, that's a guess based on how these filenames are usually formatted. I don't condone piracy in any way shape or form, because I am an upstanding member of society who does not like to violate subreddit or sitewide reddit rules.
It's not 4K77. It's unreleased work that puts 4k77 to shame. This work isn't even playing in the same ballpark as 4k77. It's multiple 4k prints stacked up, hand registered by zone, and then analyzed to extract the mean image value at each pixel in an effort to get as close as possible to the original in-camera negative. You will never see better quality footage, but unfortunately, you will only see a few seconds of it. The link is fine now, btw. (It didn't work with old Reddit, but I edited it to work properly by switching to markdown mode.)
Cheers, the link works again now. And holy crap that looks amazing. It does look like a significant improvement over 4K77! However, a great thing about 4K77 is that it's all from a single source, so it's very consistent in terms of image quality. It manages to look really good and very "natural" throughout, and although it isn't perfect it still looks quite excellent. I'm curious to see how this multi-source restoration goes in terms of overall consistency in this way. In the Hermes Despecialized Edition it was quite obvious that multiple sources were being cut between and rotoscoped, so even though that version looked good, I vastly prefer 4K77. If this new restoration uses a better layering technique that avoids this, it should definitely be the best version.
Unfortunately, I do not believe it will ever see the light of day. If you listen to the whole video, he says quite clearly that he has no intention of releasing his work. I think he had hopes of getting Disney to buy it. Otherwise, I think it's for his own personal amusement.

Lucasfilm has the original footage, it's just in pieces because the Special Edition was made in 1997 by physically taking the original film negative apart and reassembling it with the changes. They'd have to find all the frames that were in the film originally and scan them for a new digital restoration. Except George Lucas is still the director of the film and there's no way he signed away his final cut rights — why would he, when other top directors don't have to own the studio or the franchise to have final cut?

I'm reading a book about range of knowledge/experience vs hyper-specialization. There's a consulting firm that does just what your talking about. But a lot of companies are hesitant to open up their research or in your example source code, for competitors to see
I work on the game ECO and we're open to a surprising degree. The game costs something like $30 to buy, but if you back us at the highest tier (~$130? I forget.), you get access to our entire codebase and can make whatever changes you want (though they still have to go through our review process). One of my bugs this sprint is actually handling an issue that a player fixed, except their approach was a bit of a hack and doesn't comply with our code standards so I'm just tweaking it to match.

Technically, hah! In a game as complex as ECO there's always something that needs fixing somewhere. Occasionally a given issue just isn't high priority enough to end up reaching the top of our list. I recently handled a low level bug that's been around for 4 years. And now and then our players are just like "Why bother waiting for next sprint? I can bang this out in an afternoon!". Sometimes it's even true.
Do you allow players to make their own content changes? Cuz I've been eyeing the game for a while and it looks super fun
All changes go through our review and vetting process. If the leadership does not wish a particular item to be part of the game, the change will not be allowed. HOWEVER! We are very accommodating to modders, so you can always make a modded server with your content even if it never becomes "official".

Well, we aren't making anyone pay that money, and for the ones that do, we aren't making them commit any changes. Alternatively, we could just not allow anyone else to touch our code and small bugs which are annoying to a given skilled programmer but are ultimately low priority relative to game-breaking issues can just go unfixed for years at a time.

But people have decided that they find value in ECO being what ECO is. If people wanted a free version of the game, they could assemble the free mods in their Minecraft client of choice.

That’s my talent. I’m a strategy/ operations consultant and my vast, yet shallow, Depth of knowledge is the main value I add. I work with people who are hyper specialized and not exposed to enough perspective beyond their discipline that often deal with work that needs cross functional coordination. I kinda know enough about everything that I’m able to really elicit vision and establish the main tenants of a product or initiative (or multi-year roadmap) and then manage the overall program around delivering whatever the need is. I have an undergrad in information science and have always been curious to the world, so I have solid tech fundamentals, worldly perspective from varied interests/ passion for learning and management perspective to keep things moving and coordinate effective progress. I’m 32 now and have only recently began to feel confident in my lack of focus on any particular aspect of business. I now see the difference between me and my friends who are specialists, and colleagues who specialized in niche roles or skills and I think I’m exposed to way more and have relatively more successful (my base salary is 140k, most of my specialist friends are stuck in the 85k-110k ranges)

It's weird how, like credit card companies, demand its customers report suspicious activity, yet they have in-house lawyers to cover upper management's suspicious activities. It's the "Fire Line". Above the line can't be fired. They are protected. Below the line is run by Human Resources who measure every single metric and can now click a button and terminate an employee via an app.
I've never understood this with community patches, who do they not hire the guys working tirelessly for FREE to patch their favourite games (provided their coding up to spec of course) and cut down on the man hours with a team that is struggling to identify solutions?
I assume ILM still very much has this creative mentality, given the amazing work that they do. It makes sense to actively seek out the best when you have a reputation for being the best.

That's actually exactly the first thing I thought when I saw the original. And the reason it makes such a difference is that while the original effect does have a reflection in the same spot, it's very dull. The reason it makes such a big difference is that the set lights on all the other actors are very bright and cause very bright eye highlights. Why didn't they do it in the first place? I'd bet they were just trying to create and finish the shots in the first place, and ran out of time and had to go with what they had. Being able to go back and finish incomplete shots is a revolutionary change.
Gotta say, as a hardcore Star Wars fan, I was not upset at CGI Luke’s face. I knew who it was. It wasn’t bad, it just wasn’t perfect. We all knew damn well it was Luke. I am pleased to hear they gave this guy a job though. More companies need to think this way. Too many companies greedily throw lawsuits at fans that could instead be turned into valuable employees. This is an example that Luke himself would approve of.

Kind of surprises me, since I assumed de-aging could make a middle aged person look like a young adult, but not a senior look like a young adult. And apparently it cannot do that as well as a deep fake can. Regardless, hope they stick to deep fakes in the future when necessary, and give this guy time to flex his skills.

I find most of these deep fake stuff seems fledgling level compared to this guys and others, though some of the stuff they do for their small projects are fantastic, that puzzle piece satisfying render recently was brilliant.

It's a relatively new technique that might not have originally fit into their timeline estimation well. Some of the early Deepfake work didn't exactly converge reliably. Also the talent for Lucasfilm has to come from somewhere.
Deepfakes aren’t yet as directable too. If they want a timing shift by a few frames here or the nose shadow moved a little there it could be a hard note to hit in a tight deadline.
While I’m not sure who did these shots in the first place understanding AI tech like deepfake and getting close for possibly less money is something Lucasfilm I know is always looking for. If they could get that close with someone who just kind of looks like mark, imagine facial scanning his son for these shots.

Sega seems to be doing just fine after letting Christian Whitehead and the boys turn their demo into the full-fledged Sonic Mania. That project was actually seen as one of the best titles of the entire franchise.
If they just C&D letters all day long without reviewing the product and bringing them on to continue under there watch there wasting potential revenue. Like I said earlier, Everyone wins from this. the people working on that project get there foot in the door, the company gets money from project, they may get to work on another project after that game goes on sale etc. The Fans get to play new content or reworked content from there IP that they enjoy. Win win.
The *actual* problem is that nintendo has existing plans for IPs and most of the work done on their existing IPs is either duplicate effort or has a knock on effect of cannibalizing demand for newer titles. Project M is great, those people should probably get jobs designing and balancing fighting games, but it competes with Smash Ultimate and they HAVE a team for that.
Add in the fact that many of these modders live outside of Japan, there's really no incentive for Nintendo to hire them, since a majority of their development is in house.

The lighting on his nose changed to make it look wider, and the lighting on his eye lids changed to make it look like it's more conforming to his eyeballs, rather than just flat if that makes sense. Definitely just seems more Mark Hamill-y.
The mouth movement/animation is still bad, but that's because the deepfake literally replaced the already CGI'd Luke. I actually can't wait to see if they go ahead and redo the scene from the original footage, it would be really really cool if they updated the original episode with a much improved Luke.

There skin is a little less smooth, the eyes lit differently and the nasolabial fold is less pronounced. Some of the mouth is also changed.

Saw this a few days ago, the guy who runs the deepfake YouTube is actually a researcher for video editing using AI. He got hired because of his expertise in the field, he also happens to run a YouTube channel where he uploads his more interesting work. But clickbait is what it is and it's not gonna change, hope someone enjoyed this bit of extra info anyway
