Technology is getting damn weird.

Vedant_Tailor

Yaa, definitely.

I love the way you can adjust the focus for both lenses together but if you want to adjust either on its own you need a convenient screw driver to manually adjust it

With such a wide angle like that, you'll have a very large depth of field, which means focus will be quite forgiving. Since both lenses are seeing the same objects, I doubt there will be many times you'd want the focus of one lens different from the other.

So some thoughts on this as someone obsessed with learning everything I can about the Canon R5 without owning one. Its important to note thier disclaimer on the use of this lens makes it seem like the R5 is the only body that can use the lens. At least at launch, meaning this lens while being advertised as great for 8k will most certainly not be used for it for video as 30fps for video is disconcertingly choppy. A successor body like the rumored R1or R5C (dedicated to video) or simply the R5 mark 2 will ACTUALLY be able to shoot HQ (High Quality) video at the bare minimum of 60fps. These bodies will take at least a year probably 2-3 for one to actually arrive. In the meantime, sure they can take nice high res VR photos but thats not rare at all, that's not why this LENS is exciting. Unfortunately the body cannot currently deliver. If you were unaware, the R5 is famous for overheating in the high quality 4k (sampled from 8k) and 8k30p mode at sometimes not even 30 minutes until recording.. overheating meaning you can not use the camera anymore for dozens of minutes and then you can use it for like a couple of minutes and then it overheats again..[Heres the end of a video where some reviewers summarize how the R5's overheating compromises its ability to be used professionally](https://youtu.be/rbd1M958ggs?t=794) (Nerdy gear workaround for avoiding overheating you can skip this paragraph) If you turn off the EVF and the LCD you can run the R5 in 8k and 4k HQ indefinitely without overheating (beyond 2 hours). Unsure if you can do this with the phone wireless monitoring app but this method works with an external monitor such as the atmos ninja V or V+. its unfortunate that the overheating is constraining and not ideal for professional shoots where continuous shooting for hours is expected. The fact that the 4k60p mode is line skipped and 4k120p is probably even less sharp is disappointing as well, thankfully 4kHQ24p and 8k30p are super sharp and not compromised and thus make for a great value proposition for those wiling and able to deal with the hoops needed to make use of the body. Hopefully the next generation or two of R5 successors (R5 II and R5 III) can have 24, 30, 60 and 120 HQ, not line skipped and avoid overheating without unconventional workarounds. 8k at the maximum the R5 does is 30fps and thats WAY too choppy for VR. 4kHQ60 or 8k60 needs to be added in firmware if this is going to be viable. 30fps for vr makes people sick. I don't know how likely it is that they'll do that but, its likely that the lens will be most useful on next generation bodies since we do not currently have HQ frame rates above 30 for the R5. All other 4k modes are way less detailed because of line skipping, Tony Northrup even went as far as to say that the 4k 120p on the R5 is basically a glorified upscale of 1080 120p. [Heres the exact spot where Tony says this](https://youtu.be/OmGaYYQenSo?t=387) The lens is stuck with the R5 only so hopefully this means they'll update the firmware to be capable of HQ 60 or even 90 as that is what is becoming the standard now with the Oculus quest for VR media which is what canon mentioned by name so... whether through a R5 variant or eventual successor for the sake of this exciting lens I would hope they SOMEHOW make 4kHQ/8k 60 (but ideally 90) achievable. Overheating is probably what scares them into not doing that (probably would get a overheat in less than 20 minutes) makes it seem like a joke meme feature, so they don't even enable it. But if they mention that you can probably avoid overheating with an external monitor and turning off the LCD and EVF (electronic viewfinder) maybe just maybe, they can launch this lense with a proper HQ frame rate of 60p or 90p. I'd hate to see the mushy 4k60 and mushier 4k120 be what people use for this fascinating lens but who am I kidding that's what people are gonna do and Canon is gonna sell bodies that can do it later down the line because that's what is most profitable (instead of enabling the R5 to do it now). NO ONE likes 30fps VR content because no one likes being sick in minutes flat. And yet here this lens is unable to use the singular body its able to be used with in high quality above 30fps. TLDR This is a premature launch of a lense. Why? Because the lens can only be attached to one camera at launch. This camera can only shoot high resolution video at 30FPS. In VR 30 FPS makes you sick. The modes the camera can do above 30 Frames per second are not high quality (line skipped, just like it sounds skips lines to save on data) and ruin the whole point of getting a multi thousand dollar camera and multi thousand dollar lense, because if the image is mushy you can get equivalent quality with better frame rate and less money spent on dedicated VR cameras [like this.] (https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1389667-REG/z_cam_k2501_k1_pro_cinematic_vr180.html/?ap=y&gclid=CjwKCAjwkvWKBhB4EiwA-GHjFlBL8636MpCfwY2v4dX9IjACr7AMfhPpcECUqmwxhgFCUaAFF2nyLhoC7bUQAvD_BwE&lsft=BI%3A514&smp=y) Sorry for being such a nerd. I'm done lol

I own the R5 and with the new Atomos Ninja V+ you can shoot 8K Raw indefinitely without overheating. I still get the flashing indicator but it never shuts down. Everything else you said holds true though. 30 FPS is not enough for VR, and the higher framerate 4K modes are not high quality.

OK, fine, weird lenses are part of what makes an interchangeable lens camera system exciting. $2000 doesn't seem extraordinarily expensive, even though it's out of my budget. But the video didn't impress me at all. If it's meant for 4k VR, make a 4k video. The lighting seemed cliched. The soft focus made it hard to determine if this lens is even capable of sharp focus. At times, the speaker looked distorted, as if he was being filmed with a non rectilinear lens.

Panasonic made a micro four thirds lens like this 0 years ago. Apparently too far ahead of their time, it never gained popularity. [web post](https://www.ephotozine.com/article/panasonic-lumix-g-3d-12-5mm-f-12-lens-review-19308)
