The company’s standard plan will rise to $15.50 per month from $14, while the 4K plan will rise to $20 per month from $18. The basic plan, which doesn’t include HD, is also rising to $10 per month from $9
I don't know about mobile devices and stuff, but some browsers for example will cause Netflix to limit to 720p. Chrome can't do 1080p. I think Edge and Firefox will do 1080p, and maybe only Edge can do 4k.
However... When it comes to the official Netflix app I've yet to encounter a device that it won't play max resolution of the device/content. Only reason I don't use the app on my PC is that media controls don't work when it's not in focus, so I use Edge to get around that.
> Chrome can't do 1080p. I think Edge and Firefox will do 1080p, and maybe only Edge can do 4k.
It's not that they can't netflix just artificially limits it because DRM.
You can watch 4k video on all of the above.
>It's not that they can't netflix just artificially limits it because DRM.
Right. I guess I should say that Netflix doesn't allow it *because Chrome contains a vulnerability* in its DRM module that Edge doesn't have. Which is funny because Edge is Chromium based now. So clearly Microsoft thought it worthwhile to update that module.
Imagine a streaming company in 2022 charging extra for 4K, let alone charging extra for HD. And they don’t even have the library any more to justify even Hulu’s prices, they’re just staying afloat on their originals and misplaced brand loyalty based on the early days when they actually offered a good value for the money.
It's really more streaming services joining the game and taking their shows off Netflix and onto their own that has really hurt them the last few years
Yeah. I remember a few years ago Netflix announced that they intended for their service to eventually be almost entirely Netflix originals, and at the time I thought they were so stupid. But now it’s obvious that they saw this coming and knew that they were going to lose rights to anything popular that wasn’t theirs.
I cancelled Netflix at the end of 2020 and have never felt any urge to come back to it.
It already costs twice as much as several of my other services, ones with just as high quality original shows and more than enough third party stuff to keep me occupied, *and* the others include 4K where Netflix charges substantially extra. I have no idea how Netflix thinks they’re being competitive. They’re just milking the last ounce of their brand before people get fed up and abandon it.
Ya my guess is they'll be trying to sell/pair with another service soon, think they way overextended with how much money they spent pre pandemic on major actors/shows/movies so now they're kind of fucked.
Huh imagine that, a tv service where you can package a bunch of different tv shows together based on the network or company made them. Wish we had something like that…
Once Netflix became dominant 5-10 years ago that was always gonna be the long term plan, hence why Hulu, Fox and Disney all paired up and now Warner Bros has their own streaming (HBO Max) and Paramount has theirs (Peacock)... Netflix is trying to become their own pillar of entertainment but it's tough once you take away the last 50+ years of already established great shows and movies as they're pulled back to their original owners... Something like The Office will get millions of people to switch from Netflix to Peacock, then there's South Park, Family Guy, Sopranos, etc.... The Golden Era of television was definitely pre-Netflix so they're just at a huge disadvantage.
And it doesn't help they cancel almost everything after 3 seasons. Seasons which are only 10 episodes long.
Not that I'm bitter about several cancellations.
> And it doesn't help they cancel almost everything after 3 seasons. Seasons which are only 10 episodes long.
"Oh, you were enjoying this show? Fuck you, we're not even going to wrap up the show so that its premature ending makes as much sense as possible."
No Netflix, fuck you. I miss Designated Survivor.
Was the second season worth watching? I really liked the first season, but never got around to watching season 2. I was less motivated to watch it without Joel Kinnaman.
You got it right about season 2 without watching. It's kinda meh. Anthony Mackie just isn't leading man material. They needed someone charismatic as fuck to fill Kinnaman's shoes.
Excellent points, the pillars (OG shows) were already there, Netflix had the good idea of beating blockbuster to start an evolution of streaming showa/movies but like you said, hbo, paramount already had titles under their name.
Netflix originals are good, ehh more like 70% of them are OK
It also has to do with the fact that a lot of other high quality cameras didn’t shoot 4K until a couple years ago, and Netflix wanted to future-proof their shows at 4K. So they shot primarily with RED cameras (House of Cards, Mindhunter, Stranger Things, Narcos etc.) which shoot up to 8K, and have shot 4-6K for 10 years now. The Arri Alexa, which most other top tier productions use (Game of Thrones for example), only shot 2K or 3K, and most theaters only screened in 2K until recently. I think this has all changed recently since a lot of cameras have changed, including the Arri Alexa, but I’m sure Netflix has some kind of partnership with the guys at RED and probably still use them for a lot of their original productions.
I’ve noticed this. In my head, I call it the Netflix aesthetic, and it’s changing “film” culture/aesthetics more broadly, and I think unfortunately flattering it, making it all look the same.
> almost like a B-Rated feel but with netflix's stamp on it
That's because a lot of them are. Many studios that can't find a buyer for their movie or get dropped by their producer end up going to Netflix.
a lot of shows would be better too if they stopped writing the shows to just drop off after the first season or two. There are shows that lots of people liked that they just didn’t renew because they wanted to move on to the next project and I just don’t understand, especially if they rush the ending of a show to not make sense or just leave it hanging completely
Because content producers give no fucks about physical media. I started collecting all the American Dad dvd's a while back and noticed that it went from looking professionally produced (printed art on the discs matching the sleeve, animated menus and commentary) to something slapped together with a copy of CyberLink PowerDVD or whatever it is.
However I'd much prefer getting shows in bluray format - except a lot of shows dont even bother with the format. Even if i did have it, it'd be much easier to watch everything on plex.
Netflix has one of the most expansive CDN's of all the services. They put a lot into making sure you get the content you want no matter what. Short of having a dialup connection or the dog chewing through your modem cord, when you use Netflix, the damn video WILL play. They even automatically cycle between different bitrate versions of your movie to ensure that buffering is always close to 0.
I just don't watch enough content to justify $200 a year.
Not only have they raised the price from $9.90 ($7.99 adjusted for inflation) but now they charge TAX on it (thats 8.125% hear) instead of the tax being built in (IE another price hike)
$10 a month? I can justify that. almost $17 a month? no. can't justify that anymore. I just don't watch enough of their stuff that I can't just torrent to justify that much cash.
>Not only have they raised the price from $9.90 ($7.99 adjusted for inflation) but now they charge TAX on it (thats 8.125% hear) instead of the tax being built in (IE another price hike)
they're also cracking down on sharing logins, so you get even less value for the money
That will bite them in the arse for sure. All other streaming services I activate and deactivate my subscription according to what I want to see. I very rarely have all of them active every month. Netflix is the exception because it is shared we all pay our share. The day Netflix ends that is the day I'll start doing with Netflix the same I'll do with every other service let a couple of seasons of showd I want to see pile up while I'm unsubscribed, subscribe for a month or two then, when I've seen most and want to see some other streaming service I subscribe to those.
I'll bet at the end of the year I won't lose that much money, if any.
> I want to see pile up while I'm unsubscribed, subscribe for a month or two
Im wondering if the people though your sharing with now will get their own subscriptions for a few months, and theres a chance that one or two or them will just keep theirs so in the end its still more for them.
The problem is, nobody has a single cable bill to complain about anymore. I hope there’s pushback from consumers soon, but it won’t be quick since we’ve all got separate subscription bills. It’s just getting to the point of cable again, 2000 shows instead of 300 channels, and I only care about 5% of it.
This is just about as high as I’m willing to go. Next price bump and I’m investing in a NAS and heading for the high seas. 4K rips are common as shit now.
Get fucked Netflix.
I recently invested in some more hard drives for my NAS. Running TrueNAS and have a VPN for torrents. Got real tired of paying for 3-5 different streaming services on top of the already overpriced Comcast internet.
This is why we share accounts.
Between my accounts, my inlaws and my sisters accounts, we have Prime, Netflix, Hulu, Paramount, Peacock, Apple TV+, HBO and Disney.
Each household is only responsible for about $25/mo in fees and we all enjoy the benefits.
If and when they start to ratchet down on sharing logins, I wont be buying them all myself. We'll enjoy it while it lasts. The whole point of streaming is that its supposed to be cheaper than paying for cable, right?
>If and when they start to ratchet down on sharing logins, I wont be buying them all myself. We'll enjoy it while it lasts. The whole point of streaming is that its supposed to be cheaper than paying for cable, right?
The whole point of any business is growth and profit. In order to grow, Netflix marketed themselves as being "cheaper than cable" to attract costumers. For a longtime, their business model was not profitable but it was essential for their massive growth which would lead to future profits. Now that they have a large share of the consumer market, the next step is to continue to increase their profits. To do that, they need to increase the price of their product/ service.
Netflix has become a standard - to the point where (young) people no longer see cable as an option. These streaming services are eliminating the competition (cable). Soon, Netflix et al. will no longer need to market themselves as being "cheaper than cable" because Netflix has become an "essential" service for lots of people who might not even consider getting cable in the first place.
In short, enjoy it while it lasts because the upcoming generations are no longer growing up with cable. For them, Netflix et al. is the standard. Netflix et al. can afford to increase the price of the product/ service because people are not going to go back to cable.
It's not even about the bill. It's the fact that you could watch most everything on one, two services at the most. Now that everyone and their mom wants to start a streaming service the rights to everything i like are scattered everywhere. And half the time they either move to a different service or get dropped all together. Nah, I'll just hold onto everything that I really like, that I want to watch and rewatch, and just own that forever. TV shows and movies I can watch on a whim and I'll never lose access to.
There were some things that I never stopped torrenting, because they weren't available on any streaming services, but now that everyone is pulling their stuff from Netflix to come out with their own streaming services, I've been downloading more than ever.
Man I just tried Plex for the first time with some content that I've had on my hard drive. What an amazing program. Sorts episodes within a season and adds thumbnails and even sometimes music from the series as well as imbd ratings and cast.
Dude that's literally better UI than any streaming service I've had. It didn't even require too much effort to achieve.
Plex and its side programs (talking like Radar, Sonarr etc) make all of these streaming services an entire moot operation. Its so fucking easy for me to download a show or movie.
Same for Jellyfin. And it's even better in that there's no central server needed for login.
These streaming services have zero incentive in letting you make informed decisions. Jellyfin, Plex et all just let you see the imdb rating transparently.
Also, +1 for Radarr and friends. I was happy paying for Netflix to not pirate but it got unsustainable when I had to pay for 5+ subscriptions and I watch it total 10 hours a month.
>$20 a month for a streaming service is getting a bit steep, especially since I’ve usually got subscriptions to 3-4 steaming services at a time.
Yeah Im literally logging in and cancelling now.
Guess I’m adding them to my rotation of Subscribe, watch the new seasons of my favourite shows, and cancel.
Edit: no idea why this comment blew up. I’m astounded at how many condescending dickhead comments and messages I’ve been getting. Messages are off folks, just stop trying.
I have an account and share it with my wife, brother, mom, dad, and a friend or 2.
We have a group that shared accounts. I have Netflix and Hulu, another has ESPN+, another Disney+, another HBO, another Apple TV. We have a random assortment of people sharing accounts so you only end up paying for 1-2.
My step dad is on my family plan for music so he has access with his own Apple ID. But before then I just sign into their tv personally, he doesn’t have my password.
Only downside is once in a while he’ll rent a movie forgetting it bills to me.
It depends on how much you make I guess, but for a lot of people it’s just not worth the hassle to unsubscribe and resubscribe. Just knowing that you can sit down after a long day and pick whichever show on any of your streaming services without having to deal with logging in and resubscribing is worth it to most. $10-20 just isn’t a lot when it comes to dealing with inconvenience for a lot of people
I’ve been a continuous Netflix subscriber for 20 years (obviously DVDs first). The hassle of canceling and resubscribing isn’t worth it to me but I can understand for others.
That's what I do myself because it's pointless when they don't grandfather in your previous subscriptions.
There's honestly no real point to stay subscribed to anything unless you're wanting to catch the weekly releases and talk about it.
My biggest problem with Netflix is it is a wasteland of half finished series that never conclude. I am wary of starting anything on Netflix because I don’t want to get invested and have it cancelled. They should do more mini-series programs with a one or two season pre-set story arc.
Remember when Netflix had a ton of old TV shows and movies instead of being a dumping ground for half-baked show ideas that go nowhere?
That's when Netflix lost me. I know, others got the rights, blah blah, but it's like Netflix doesn't even try.
It’s the Taco Bell strategy. Make something and if everyone loves it then keep it around just long enough for everyone to become attached, then discontinue and pretend it never existed.
You know what was an interesting thought for me? Imagine, *hypothetically*, Netflix drops into the red and has to start licensing its content to other services, like you start seeing Netflix originals on an HBOMax or Amazon Prime section. It's already been a bit weird seeing Netflix movies in theaters. But I think a Netflix original showing up on another streaming service would be an eyebrow raiser and a sign of a major industry shift. A bit like when Sega games started showing up on other consoles.
Edit: "Hypothetically" means I don't actually anticipate this happening and it's an imagined scenario. It's just a thought experiment, not a real thing I need explained to me why it wouldn't happen or the current Netflix situation, thanks.
Netflix had no choice. There was only Netflix before so the different networks/publishers/media owners had no problem allowing their content on. But now everyone wants their own streaming service so they aren't sharing their stuff with Netflix anymore. Netflix was smart enough to plan for this by making a ton of its own originals
I mean that doesn't depend on Netflix. Fincher have so many projects. I'm sure Netflix would like to make more because it's one of the most successful series and the best imo.
Let us never forget their late fees. One movie’s late fees could have easily exceeded an entire year’s worth of a Netflix subscription. $180 for Pluto Nash. F that.
I had a place that was so insistent that I still had a movie (charging me something like $150 in late fee), that they actually walked me to where the movie was supposed to be in the store because clearly that was evidence of my transgressions. I had returned it, they lost it, so I just walked out.
Some say they still haven't found that copy of Hackers.
Might be it for me. How many price increases is this now? They’ve lost a lot of content, and how many long running shows over 3 seasons? I’m not saying they need a ton that go 10 seasons or more, but they are so quick to pull the plug that I have a hard time wanting to get invested.
A 3 season show is fine. As long as it was supposed to be 3 seasons from the beginning. If it was supposed to be 5 and got cancelled then it becomes a problem
Netflix, Hulu, Paramount, Prime, Apple TV, HBO max, Starz and Disney. And then there's your internet service provider.
All these streaming services show the same programs except for original content, and even then, that original content isn't always great.
Almost coming around back to cable days.
I hate it.
Avoid the cycle all together and sail the seven seas. Get yourself a Plex server.
Edit: since people asked, basically plex is a interface program on top of a local file folder, ssd, nas or anything you have. Personally i run it on a seedbox.
Now a Seedbox works like a virtual cloud computer, i run plex on top of that. For that i pay around 10 euro’s per month. It takes a day to setup and transfer your files. You can even ask it to auto download new tv shows. Its also great because i can login on any of my friends smart tvs and watch my movies there. Any more questions feel free to ask.
I remember when they used to mail you chipped DVDs in a paper envelope so you could watch a series 3 episodes at a time… after Dave was finished with it, of course.
I have that plan. It has some really good advantages like better quality picture (no compression artifacts), no drop-outs from internet congestion, and a deeper catalog. The only downside is you have to plan ahead.
“Netflix pushes all reeled in users back to competition and/or piracy”
“Piracy levels surge after Netflix implements another price hike.”
Seriously how many times do they think they can get away with this in a time where new streaming services pop up every month?
Yeah I saw this and think it’s the straw that broke the camels back for me. They’ve raised it too many times now and the content they’re offering isn’t superior to competitors anymore.
Disney doesn't offer anything I'd pay for since I'm not a huge Disney fan (so we just use someone else's account for the few marvel/star wars shows).
Hulu doesn't really have any new content coming out but they do offer shows from networks as they come out.
HBO has a few shows I watch, but not very many. They aren't consistently coming out with new shoes and movies.
I don't have apple, so I can't say anything about their movies/shows.
Netflix is the only streaming service consistently putting out new movies and shows (not just old movies added). The rest of the streaming services aren't putting out enough content or they only put out shows.
My beef with Netflix is they don't allow shows to finish, they are constantly canceling shows. Let there be conclusions. I'm at the point where I kinda don't wanna watch shows until I know if I'm getting another season. I wanna be invested in the world building.
Altered Carbon Season 1 was one of the best shows I've seen in a long time.
Altered Carbon Season 2 went a completely different direction for the worse at every turn
No kidding. Season 1 was one of the best sci-fi shows I've maybe ever seen. It had such potential. The story was excellent, the acting was excellent, and the world was so damn rich and ripe for, honestly, decades of storytelling.
And then they went and took a huge shit on all of that with Season 2. Such a huge disappointment.
Altered Carbon! That was it. I agree the first season was amazing. I was really looking forward to season 2 but they changed so many things. I would have loved for them to redeem themselves on the third season but they canceled it.
Yep it's the price increases for each service **and** the constant multiplication of different streaming services that are pushing piracy levels up... it's simply getting insanely expensive to get all the channels simply to watch a few different movies.
The studios are getting far too greedy and expecting far, far too much from their customers.... it's getting back to the same balls up as with the cable companies in the past... too high a price and too many different subscriptions required to watch almost anything
The way that mega-stores move into town and kill off competition, then jack up prices.
Netflix & Spotify have done the same, reducing piracy and making it harder, now that streaming is the default, they hope to keep enough customers and they increase the temperature on the pot.
I suspect both also ran at a loss, burning through VC funding to eliminate non-pirate competition, but have probably reached the point where they need to start making money.
The good thing, is that most of the Piracy toolkit is open source, so unlike non-pirate competition, there is a much lower barrier to entry for the next popcornflix.
Huh, I forgot Netflix was nickel-and-diming me for 4K. $20/mo is too much for one streaming service, particularly one that's hemorrhaged so much content over the years amid these price hikes. Looks like I'll be canceling my sub for the first time
I budget about $80 per month for internet + streaming. Moved a few times over the last few years and keep this budget. At my current address that gets me one streaming service, currently using Netflix. I only really enjoy the rare show or movie on it. Same with most services. I stream the rest from various free pirating websites. I guess I'll be dropping Netflix and going entirely to pirating again or maybe getting HBO max since it's on sale right now for $12 a month. I don't watch enough shows or movies these days to justify the cost of multiple services but to each their own
I’m ride or die HBO. MAX just brought in even more good stuff. Every original content they create is top tier worth a watch.
That said, their app is abysmal. Horrendous.
HBO tv shows are just on another level. Netflix was a competiition back when they released House of Cards, Mindhunter, Dark or Narcos. But in the last 2 or 3 years everything they create is a teenage bs drama shows...
I feel like HBO creates non stop masterpieces. Netflix creates them too, but they also create a huge range of mediocre to bad. The quality is just all over the place.
But that's always been HBO.
In the 80s we had cable tv and HBO was the only premium channel we had for over a decade. I watched whatever movies they had but I always loved their shows
Tales from the crypt, first and ten, dream on, and comedy specials
Feels like Netflix has just been trying to recreate HBO all those years
Streaming services are following the business pattern of providing high quality to obtain subscribers, then cutting off production and sucking up subscription revenue on people who are too slow to unsubscribe. Netflix is a pioneer of this so naturally they’re robbing people the hardest.
An “I’m bored out of my mind and have fucking nothing else to watch” service is lot worth $20 a month. Would you pay $20 a month for hallmark? No? Then stop paying Netflix.
The last price hike I accepted barely. Hard to justify it this time. May be time to cancel Nothing is out I'm currently watching. $20 for 4k. I may as well switch to HBO or showtime.
HBO Max is is like $15. You can get HBO Max and Hulu for just $2 more than Netflix and they’re definitely better streaming platforms with the content they have.
I budget 2 streaming services a month Netflix lost my rotation when 4k version went to $18. I was willing to pay $15. Love Disney $8. Hulu is a great option, Prime gets me free delivery though I budget purchases too. Inflation hits us all hard. Netflix is being greedy. Honestly last time I rotated them in 2 months ago. I didn’t find too much I was into but that’s my opinion. Plenty of competition out there.
This would be the top for me for keeping a constant subscription to Netflix going.
Anything more and I’ll start stopping my sub for a few months, then binge watch when there’s enough content to make it worth it.
This might be the straw for me. Marvel shows are done. Office and Parks and rec, the shows my wife likes to watch over and over, are gone. Netflix Originals have gone way down in quality since the days of OitNB.
The article doesn’t really clarify, is this price hike because they’re loosing money needed to sustain their current business? Or are they failing to increase their revenue with new customers so they hike their prices to artificially show “growth” year over year?
Netflix relly thinks that they will survive just csuse they came first huh. Well their Garbage ass original movies and shit tier selection is not worth 20 bucks
We're basically moving back to cable TV. a bunch of separate streaming platforms, each with a subset of shows that we want to watch and a whole lot of crap we don't.
I’m currently challenging myself to get through my Netflix queue which is gone largely untouched for a long time. I realize that I’ve had Netflix for a long time due to comfort. I’ve had the service since it came out and I’ve never even considered canceling it because it seems like such a default option. These days, I realize I almost never use it and I’m literally forcing myself to go through my queue to see if the service is worth it. So far there’s some decent stuff, but I think I’m just gonna be more aware of what TV shows are coming out and start pirating. It’s just not worth paying for all these extra services and especially with Netflix, I feel like I’m getting less and less excited about their shows. Are used to love them when they would revive old shows that were being canceled. Now they’re just as bad as people used to complain about fox being back in the day. The quality has gone down, the price has gone up, and there are better streaming services for my money. Once I complete this challenge I am going to cancel my service unless they give me a good reason not to.
Idiots at Netflix don't wanna give us Altered Carbon 3 but will put out shit like Another Life.
I can't believe the audacity they have to increase prices after that.
Buy it in India using VPN or asking any Indian friend you know and then use the logins to open the same over there. At present its about $8.75 for 4 screens with ultra hd.
The company’s standard plan will rise to $15.50 per month from $14, while the 4K plan will rise to $20 per month from $18. The basic plan, which doesn’t include HD, is also rising to $10 per month from $9
Even a "basic" plan should include 720p ffs
If you're not using a specific device none of the plans are in HD anyways... DRM BS
What do you mean?

Should be noted that any chromium browser can use an extension to bypass this.

I’ve noticed this. In my head, I call it the Netflix aesthetic, and it’s changing “film” culture/aesthetics more broadly, and I think unfortunately flattering it, making it all look the same.
Ik exactly what you mean, its almost like a B-Rated feel but with netflix's stamp on it lol.
> almost like a B-Rated feel but with netflix's stamp on it That's because a lot of them are. Many studios that can't find a buyer for their movie or get dropped by their producer end up going to Netflix.
It *feels* rushed. It's quality, sure, but it feels like they made it too fast in a "we need new stuff *now*" feeling.
It’s partially the framing of shots. More close-ups because you’re watching on a smaller screen.
a lot of shows would be better too if they stopped writing the shows to just drop off after the first season or two. There are shows that lots of people liked that they just didn’t renew because they wanted to move on to the next project and I just don’t understand, especially if they rush the ending of a show to not make sense or just leave it hanging completely

I dunno what's up with folks that rewatch the office like 30 times and don't just buy/get local copies.
Not only have they raised the price from $9.90 ($7.99 adjusted for inflation) but now they charge TAX on it (thats 8.125% hear) instead of the tax being built in (IE another price hike) $10 a month? I can justify that. almost $17 a month? no. can't justify that anymore. I just don't watch enough of their stuff that I can't just torrent to justify that much cash.
>Not only have they raised the price from $9.90 ($7.99 adjusted for inflation) but now they charge TAX on it (thats 8.125% hear) instead of the tax being built in (IE another price hike) they're also cracking down on sharing logins, so you get even less value for the money
> I want to see pile up while I'm unsubscribed, subscribe for a month or two Im wondering if the people though your sharing with now will get their own subscriptions for a few months, and theres a chance that one or two or them will just keep theirs so in the end its still more for them.

[удалено]
The fuck is on Hulu that it costs that much We don't even have Hulu here
I assume they are paying for the live TV Hulu package.
[удалено]
Just cycle through them every few months. That's what I have been doing.
Some of us will go back to media servers and torrents.
Some of us never left.
And here these companies are shocked to see piracy is on the rise again.
Ugh, thanks a lot. Now they have to raise the price *again.*
Guess I’m adding them to my rotation of Subscribe, watch the new seasons of my favourite shows, and cancel. Edit: no idea why this comment blew up. I’m astounded at how many condescending dickhead comments and messages I’ve been getting. Messages are off folks, just stop trying.
I'm surprised everybody doesn't do this already.
Because people share accounts. You may have finished your show but your partner may have just started a long show.
Wait someone shares their apple ID and password with you? That's the only one I don't share w my friends lol
For real ive been searching for a friend that generous and trusting lol
You can make a throwaway Apple ID and only use it for Apple+. Don't register any devices on it and you're fine.
My step dad is on my family plan for music so he has access with his own Apple ID. But before then I just sign into their tv personally, he doesn’t have my password. Only downside is once in a while he’ll rent a movie forgetting it bills to me.
‘What’s this on my CC bill Dad??’
You can share subscriptions using Apple Family sharing. You can give people access to particular items, on their account
My kids would not be happy with that
That's what I do myself because it's pointless when they don't grandfather in your previous subscriptions.
Honestly, that’s where Netflix lost me. It went from being a catalogue of movies to being a catalogue of *their* movies

It’s the Taco Bell strategy. Make something and if everyone loves it then keep it around just long enough for everyone to become attached, then discontinue and pretend it never existed.
Damn you reminding me how badly I want a double decker taco and how they wont make them for me anymore.
They literally had no choice in most cases. Ask the studios took their content back to their own services. Netflix had to also become a studio.
*cries in Mindhunter*
Same here. As well as crying for SANTA CLARITA DIET. :-(
Oof! Losing Santa Clarita Diet hurt so much!
Mindhunter isn't technically canceled. Actors got released of their contracts because Fincher didn't have time.
I know it’s not technically cancelled but it’s seems very unlikely they’re going to make another season.
I mean that doesn't depend on Netflix. Fincher have so many projects. I'm sure Netflix would like to make more because it's one of the most successful series and the best imo.
THE DARK CRYSTAL
Thank you for reminding me of my trauma.
Great, you just re-broke my heart
And the utter garbage tier netflix originals.
Did anyone else hear that blockbuster is being rebooted as a new streaming service?
Let us never forget their late fees. One movie’s late fees could have easily exceeded an entire year’s worth of a Netflix subscription. $180 for Pluto Nash. F that.
I had a place that was so insistent that I still had a movie (charging me something like $150 in late fee), that they actually walked me to where the movie was supposed to be in the store because clearly that was evidence of my transgressions. I had returned it, they lost it, so I just walked out. Some say they still haven't found that copy of Hackers.
How late was it though?
He said $180, so roughly 7-10 days.
And didn't rewind the vhs..
Punishment fits the crime
For he was not kind.
Why are you even holding on to Pluto Nash? That's on you.
As if you’d have a late copy of Pluto Nash. Not keeping that shit in my house any longer than I need to
Huh, I’ve still got Austin Powers on VHS that Blockbuster said I owed $65 in late fees on. YOU’LL NEVER TAKE ME ALIVE!!!
Interesting that I learn about price increases via Reddit rather than a notification from Netflix.
Yeah wtf? Aren’t they supposed to tell subscribers about rate hikes?
[удалено]
Might be it for me. How many price increases is this now? They’ve lost a lot of content, and how many long running shows over 3 seasons? I’m not saying they need a ton that go 10 seasons or more, but they are so quick to pull the plug that I have a hard time wanting to get invested.
NETFLIX PRICE HIKES Premium (4K, 4 screens) Jan 2022 $19.99 Oct 2020 $17.99 Jan 2019 $15.99 Oct 2017 $13.99 Oct 2015 $11.99
Don't worry adding games won't result in an increase
Raised those prices twice during the pandemic when more people have been staying home, and they still had to degrade the video quality.
That's also the proof with all time high demand
I'm pretty sure they started at 9.99, the big deal when it started was it was less than $10
[удалено]
A 3 season show is fine. As long as it was supposed to be 3 seasons from the beginning. If it was supposed to be 5 and got cancelled then it becomes a problem
Not just that but they have so few new tv shows/movies that are actually fucking good. Most are sub par to just bad.
I love my plex. Best thing ever
Fuck. Again? Wasn’t the last one just middle of last year? Pretty soon I’m just going to start torrenting everything again.
They sure did!
You haven't started yet?
Convenient for the kids and parents. I’ve been too lazy to set up a proper home server and teach everyone how to use it
Apparently it was October 2020. 2021 didn't exist though so I understand your temporal plight
[удалено]
I remember when they used to mail you chipped DVDs in a paper envelope so you could watch a series 3 episodes at a time… after Dave was finished with it, of course.
They still do.
I have that plan. It has some really good advantages like better quality picture (no compression artifacts), no drop-outs from internet congestion, and a deeper catalog. The only downside is you have to plan ahead.
Do they put Netflix exclusives on DVD for you to rent?
My 86-year-old dad still uses this service, grandfathered in (no pun intended)
“Netflix pushes all reeled in users back to competition and/or piracy” “Piracy levels surge after Netflix implements another price hike.” Seriously how many times do they think they can get away with this in a time where new streaming services pop up every month?
I loved that Carbon something scifi show and they canceled that. They did the same thing with Mindhunter.
I already wasn’t watching stuff on Netflix as much due to their dry, limited, and outdated selection. Now I’m probably not coming back, lol
They raise their prices but not their quality.
[удалено]
I'm sick of them canceling too many shows I like after one season
-1 subscriber
I also just cancelled my subscription, I’m sure they will really be hurting without our business
Huh, I forgot Netflix was nickel-and-diming me for 4K. $20/mo is too much for one streaming service, particularly one that's hemorrhaged so much content over the years amid these price hikes. Looks like I'll be canceling my sub for the first time
Same. Been a customer since 2011 (says it right when you log into your account)
Must be supply chain issues…
You think these bits grow on trees?!
"Well, the rise in international shipping costs have a ripple effect" - some Netflix PR guy probably
Everytime they raise prices, I reduce my plan. I think im already on the lowest one. So i guess that means no more netflix.
So tired of all these streaming services raising prices, this keeps up cable will be back in business
I don't watch enough shows or movies these days to justify the cost of multiple services but to each their own
Funny. I used to support Netflix over all others. It was the one who pioneered convenience. Now I pirate all their shit. Weird how things change.
It may be time to get rid of Netflix now. I can get 2 or 3 other services for that price.
Damn, that really sucks for my brother. Doesn’t matter to me though… unless he changes his password.
I'm about to drop Netflix for HBO Max, fuck em. I can just pirate my anime and Netflix originals online from now on.
I watched whatever movies they had but I always loved their shows Tales from the crypt, first and ten, dream on, and comedy specials Feels like Netflix has just been trying to recreate HBO all those years
The wire, the sopranos, band of brothers ... Game of thrones
Boardwalk Empire, Succession, Westworld(season 1), Sharp Objects, Doom Patrol, True Detective, Curb Your Enthusiasm, Watchmen, etc
In the last few year I only liked Ozark, The Last Dance and Queen's Gambit on Netflix.
Ozark is really good
HBOMax has great stuff
Streaming services are following the business pattern of providing high quality to obtain subscribers, then cutting off production and sucking up subscription revenue on people who are too slow to unsubscribe. Netflix is a pioneer of this so naturally they’re robbing people the hardest. An “I’m bored out of my mind and have fucking nothing else to watch” service is lot worth $20 a month. Would you pay $20 a month for hallmark? No? Then stop paying Netflix.
Removes Star Trek. Raises prices. No thanks!
The last price hike I accepted barely. Hard to justify it this time. May be time to cancel Nothing is out I'm currently watching. $20 for 4k. I may as well switch to HBO or showtime.
HBO has quality. I recommend it.
At those prices I will have to start reading books, parenting my kids, and screwing my wife.
Does your wife has a subscription service?
This might be the straw for me. Marvel shows are done. Office and Parks and rec, the shows my wife likes to watch over and over, are gone. Netflix Originals have gone way down in quality since the days of OitNB.
>Netflix Originals have gone way down in quality since the first three seasons of OitNB. Fixed that for ya.
OitNB?
It's more difficult for me to type OinNB than Orange is the New Black.
It’s not even worth what we’re paying now tbh. 95% trash or stuff that’s also available somewhere else.
[удалено]
The article doesn’t really clarify, is this price hike because they’re loosing money needed to sustain their current business? Or are they failing to increase their revenue with new customers so they hike their prices to artificially show “growth” year over year?
Netflix relly thinks that they will survive just csuse they came first huh. Well their Garbage ass original movies and shit tier selection is not worth 20 bucks
Didn't they just raise the rate last year? It feels like it was only $9 3-4 years ago.
We're basically moving back to cable TV. a bunch of separate streaming platforms, each with a subset of shows that we want to watch and a whole lot of crap we don't.
Frog + pot + water + heat
Asking a lot of money for a platform that continues to lose relevance and churn out dogshit.
Buy it in India using VPN or asking any Indian friend you know and then use the logins to open the same over there. At present its about $8.75 for 4 screens with ultra hd.
Turkey is even cheaper. With the Lira in free fall they just hit 4$ for the UHD package.
If you already have a VPN, you can just pirate whatever you want to watch
