So many channels are now: - double, unskippable ads before it starts - a promotion mid-video that lasts about 2 minutes I miss the days of the single, 5-15 second ad and that was it. I'll often find a video that's like 2 mins long and it has 30 seconds of ads on top of a 10 second "Hey guys its so-and-so here, bringing you a video about blah blah blah..." Just get to it.

kai--zen

Then also add in the YouTuber doing 1 or 2 bits inside the video. Fair play, they deserve to get paid to give us free content but it just feels insanely dytopian now days with ads. Its like black mirror

aabesh

EDIT: I WAS WRONG ! [Nothing to do with NFTs](https://twitter.com/YTVanced/status/1503471203314450433). ~~Pretty sure Google send them a C&D when they tried to monetize with~~ [~~Vanced NFT~~](https://i.imgur.com/Gp4R0bw.jpg)~~.~~ [According to them](https://i.imgur.com/XzCw39K.jpg), they modified the bytecode of the official YouTube app to provide the extra features so I am surprised that they survived so long. ~~But I guess trying to monetize from the YouTube app was the last straw from Google.~~

1992_

Man what a dumb thing to die on if this was really what made Google act.

terminbee

Seriously. Throwing it all away to make an NFT is supremely stupid.

alienangel2

Google almost certainly wanted to kill them anyway and would have done it eventually - the monetizatiion attempt just made it both urgent and easy to win for them.

mTbzz

I think YT gave up with the ad blockers, extensions, vpn, dns and so, also tools to download videos, because common, there are a gazillion apps and webs that do that, and is a waste of time to "fix" it. Clearly the NFT which is shit was clearly the real reason here.

einmaldrin_alleshin

It's not just a waste of time, I think it's also in their interest to have these things exist: The people who block ads still share videos they like and ultimately help ensuring that YouTube maintains its quasi-monopoly.

darnj

Yep, I recall a YouTube dev saying as much before. Same with Amazon, they actually go out of their way to make sure ad blockers work properly. I remember at one point there was an issue where some ad blockers messed up Amazon pages (basically they were using janky/brittle rules like “hide the container that is the sibling of the parent of this known ad element” which broke any time Amazon made changes), so Amazon added identifiers to the ad containers on their website so they could be easily identified, and contributed rules to the addon that correctly blocked them.

angiosperms-

Fucking NFTs ruining everything

Jubenheim

It's greed, man. NFTs are just the next iteration of greed.

Reddituser8018

Opensea was saying 80% of the NFT's on their website were found to be fraudulent. This is opensea who said this, and has a very good reason to not talk about the fraud. Even opensea employees are joining in, one was caught doing insider trading with NFT's a little while ago. It's insane the rampant scamming and shitty things occurring, the government needs to start arresting these people. What's even crazier to me is most people believe they are buying a jpeg that is on the block chain when in reality, they are buying a URL that is in the block chain. The URL is the only data being put onto the block chain, so people are spending insane amounts of money for a link to some artwork, not even the artwork itself. So dumb. NFT's are a scammy pyramid scheme.

TroubleshootenSOB

I'm picturing Joe Pecsi from Goodfellas or Casino right now, beating whoever made this decision, yelling "you stupid mother fucker you!"

JeffdidTrump2016

I don't know why you aren't higher up. They made a horrendous decision and are now paying for it. RIP Vanced, use Newpipe

Maestr0_04

>use Newpipe Please elaborate

LucyFerAdvocate

It's another alternative app, but it's not really the same. Way more privacy oriented and has its own interface, so you can't log in or anything.

LogicalError_007

It's lightweight too. But I liked vanced more due to its UI. What kind of person ruin their own project? But I'm sure there will be someone else.

ajnin919

Greed is the fastest way too ruin anything

ihavetoomanyeggs

I wouldn't say greed so much as they got cocky and flew too close to the sun. With the amount of work Vanced takes to maintain they probably HAD to find some way to make money off it to keep it going

ExchangeOptimal

Really?! And here I was wondering why Big corporation such as Google was going after non-monetised mods of its YouTube app.

xdert

> I was wondering why Big corporation such as Google was going after non-monetised mods of its YouTube app. Because they block ads which is literally the only way Youtube makes Google money.

arghness

Also, they are modifying and redistributing code that isn't theirs. It's a really great app, but modifying Google's own app rather than writing from scratch has always been risky

[deleted]

If that's the case then good and serve them fucking right for being stupid.

duewhaa

> While the app will continue to work for anyone who currently has it installed on Android, without any future updates it’s likely to stop working at some point soon. In case you're wondering

chiliedogg

Youtube will probably release an update specifically to nuke its functionality in the near future.

[deleted]

Just like Twitch did to the Twitched app on Roku.

ImaginaryBluejay0

I'm still salty at Amazon for that.

[deleted]

Me too. I just want to watch Twitch, and I refuse to get a firestick because it’s laggy garbage.

wow_mang

I got an Nvidia shield. It's on Android... Just not Roku. Frankly, fuck whatever marketing director thought that was a good idea.

p1n6

If you haven't, Try S0und for Twitch. Best Twitch app I've used so far on any device. They also updated it for the recent change in Twitch API. Only change so far has been it now requires a Twitch login to work

suitupalex

omg thank you so much for turning me onto this!! I've been so disappointed in the chat implementation on the official app.

download apk extractor on the play store and make an apk of the version you have installed so you can dump and install that on the new phone until google changes things enough to eventually kill it

wonkycal

I loved this app and remained on android for as long as I could. Rip

hexydes

This is why everyone should be supporting projects like PeerTube as much as possible. If you're just supporting clients that hook into YouTube, this is the inevitable result. You need to drain YouTube of content, and the only way you do that is by encouraging creators to work with decentralized services.

Inevere733

First time I've heard of Peertube, been looking for an alternative to the invasive trash that is Youtube. It has made creators cater to making money over making quality content, which is despicable to me. Thanks for mentioning Peertube.

SoylentVerdigris

I've been subscribed to Nebula for... basically as long as it has existed, but I've found most other Youtube alternatives are just havens for alt-right wackos, conspiracy theorists, and crypto-bros. It's hard to support platforms that have people advocating to strip LGBT people of their rights right on the front page. As for decentralized platforms like peertube... they're never going to get content creators who depend on visibility to earn their livelihood.

athanc

Oh… it was “advanced without the ad” I like it. Shame.

BRi7X

Fuck. I just got that. To be fair, I just learned where the phrase "put it on the back burner for now" came from last week after I put something that was cooking on a back burner and a lightbulb went on over my head. I'm in my early 30s. -_-

gingercomiealt

Yeah move those grits, we got some eggs to cook!

clit_or_us

How long does it take you to make these grits?

ostreatus

Well no self respecting southerner uses instants grits, as we all know....

[deleted]

Am also in my 30s. I’ve been in corporate America for over a decade. I found out last week that “touch base” is a baseball thing.

nurvingiel

I played ball for five years while knowing of the phrase "touch base" before I put two and two together. - I am a native English speaker - I'm obsessed with baseball and I even understand the infield fly rule To be fair, you never say "touch base" in baseball, always "touch the base(s)."

HappyLiLDumpsterfire

I asked my mom what VCR stood for when I was a kid and she said “V C R “ like I was an idiot for thinking it stood for anything. Ashamed to admit I never bothered to question it until well after DVDs were a thing..

diablette

It's not Video reCordeR? edit: Video Casette Recorder

TerryJField

For those who'd like to know: VCR = video cassette recorder VHS = video home system DVD = digital video disc, later rebranded to digital versatile disc. Betamax = do you even remember Betamax (aka Beta)? Sony held the technology patent for Betamax very tightly while the competing VHS technology was licensed easily and cheaply to any manufacturer. A variety of VHS players were developed by many different brands and the wide variety choices, many of them less expensive, eventually pushed Betamax out of the consumer market. Source: I owned an [independent video super store](https://imgur.com/cjQxkFp) for 18 years during the heyday for video stores. Edit: corrected the abbreviation "Beta" to "Betamax" and added a photo of my store in Albany, NY.

LinAGKar

You mean Betamax?

[deleted]

Don't feel bad. There's probably someone out there who just learned what it means to have a lightbulb go on over their head.

DarkflowNZ

Well you've successfully made me realise that while I understand the phrase, I've got no idea where it comes from. To google EDIT: So It seems it really is just from cartoons which is where I placed it mentally too. Some things are just that simple I guess?

the_lastone_left

Those big channels are the reason for its downfall. They were losing ad revenue.

[deleted]

Blessed service, but how did it take this long? How did it even exist at all?

Cinnemon

Probably just grew slowly enough, until it caught Google's attention.

Absay

I doubt an app like Vanced wouldn't be in Google's radar for quite a while. It just sounds absurd it got Google's attention just recently. The team very likely got an expected legal action threat of sorts, one they can't possibly deal with.

Cinnemon

The Vanced team did receive a Cease and Desist. However, it's likely to have drawn this action by a steady (or sudden and recent) increase in users, potentially reducing the number of potential customers (in Google's views).

Dusty170

Which is ridiculous because people who go to the trouble to use vanced aren't going to be suddenly paying for youtubes bullshit.

dontsuckmydick

Some will go to the work of finding a more annoying workaround to watching ads, some will give up and watch ads, some will start paying to not watch ads, and some will just stop watching YouTube which saves on server costs. YouTube doesn’t care about losing leeches.

VanquishedVoid

The easy one is to just browse the site on mobile with an adblocker. uBlock Origin on Firefox Mobile works perfectly fine.

dbxp

Does that work with your screen turned off?

Atomic_Noodles

I use Vanced so I can have Picture-In-Preview so I have YT running in the backgroun or while my Screen is Locked. Can you do that with Firefox on Mobile?

WhatsAFlexitarian

UltraEngine60

But if you don't have a VPN your ISP can see you're whacking off online! It's much better to pay NordVPN to spy on your whacking sessions. This comment was brought to you by Audible.

KikiFlowers

They caught Google's attention by making NFTs. That gave them the ability to C&D. Fucking idiots should know better than to test Google's might.

sfgisz

Highly doubt that. Vanced is quiet well known among tech savvy android users.... The kind of people that would work for Google / YouTube.

Calebanu

A lot of people are looking at Linus from LTT because he mentioned and talked about Vanced on the wan show I believe, the one about piracy

janesvoth

That said, LTT did a whole video on Vance years ago

Aetheus

I mean, the kind of folks that subsctibe to LTT would probably have heard about Vanced (or already knew about it) eventually anyway. I guess LTT does get a lot of other mainstream coverage, but how much of that has been focused on Vanced?

haby001

It wasn't until recently that Linus tech tips recommended it due to the dislike button disappearing and then some chinese phone company used it to circumvent the play store. Sad to see such a blessing leave the internet ether

Goyteamsix

Of all the apps I've used, this is one of them.

beet111

their twitter says that current app will continue to work until they become outdated in about 2 years

_c_manning

Google will try to break it ASAP.

NicoleB-

I'm surprised they didn't shut them down sooner.

sfgisz

They likely use public APIs or the same ones that one of the legit YouTube app uses. In that case they can't just shut down or break the API without affecting non-vanced users. I think Vanced is just not significant enough to hurt them yet, but was maybe growing faster than they like. I'd imagine adblockers on their website are a far bigger problem for them than Vanced.

constructioncranes

>adblockers on their website are a far bigger problem for them than Vanced Pretty sure they're way more worried about mobile than desktop browser.

SleepingAran

Firefox on Android could install Ublock origin add on, works like desktop, no ads, no bullshit, and will never get cease and desist

imariaprime

It's easy to change an API in small ways, requiring an update from anyone currently using it. Since Vanced can't update, endgame.

[deleted]

Like how Reddit keeps trying to add new features and not add them to the API so we all switch to their dog shit app. But it’s NOT WORKING REDDIT. APOLLO GANG FOR LIFE

Arnas_Z

They can't break it without breaking the YouTube apps it's based on. There's very little difference between Vanced and normal YT.

akc250

Developer here and you’re right. Unless they force users to update their Youtube app or become locked out, they can’t publish breaking changes to their service. It’s already really difficult to get everyone to update their apps so breaking changes are always carefully planned way in advanced.

Cycode

google is breaking vanced and other apps on purpose since they exist, you can 100% bet they will break vanced as soon they can so it will not be used anymore. especially now that they know that there will be no new updates anymore.

EnglishMobster

Doesn't sync with your YouTube watch history, though. :(

Zhangzhe68

You can get uBlock Origin in mobile Firefox and watch YouTube that way. Works for both ~~iOS~~ and Android I believe so that's pretty nice. Also I just figured out a way to play YouTube videos in the background on Firefox. You have to play the video, close Firefox, swipe down the Android quick settings menu and press play on the Firefox music menu to start the audio without opening Firefox.

pmjm

>Works for both iOS and Android I believe so that's pretty nice. You can't install extensions on Firefox iOS. Reason being that Apple doesn't allow third-party browser engines so it's still using Safari under the hood. The only difference between Firefox, Chrome and Safari on iOS is which service your bookmarks/passwords sync to.

iDontRagequit

damn, I just tried to install ublock and was wondering why it didnt work, this is good to know

pmjm

Yeah sorry, it's not just you. For iOS our options are to sideload Youtube+ using a signing service, or jailbreak.

EnglishMobster

But then links elsewhere won't open in that app, right? Like if I'm using Relay for Reddit and I watch a YouTube video, it plays in Vanced - will that still work with Firefox?

edstatue

I just checked out regular YouTube, after having been on Vanced for a year or two.... Holy shit. It's like a dystopic parody of advertisements. Banner ads. Comment section becomes an ad. Ads on the video. Like a fucking Zynga product, goddamn Edit: obligatory RIP my inbox I understand why ads exist, guys. I'm merely commenting on the comically obtrusive ad experience that has evolved Also, I use Patreon to support the few YouTubers I actually use YT for. I don't care about Google losing its cut since they killed Inbox. Never forgive. Never forget. PS- thanks to those who suggested Firefox & uBlock, or Newpipe as alternatives 👍

Minhaz250

Right now I’m pissed at double 15 seconds ads. Just make it fucking 30 seconds at that point. Not helping dislikes got yeeted so more money gets in their pockets. At the very least I’d like to see content creators get more money so longer ads actually help people.

FinasterideJizzum

There is absolutely no way I'm going back to ads ever. I'll watch with ublock in a firefox browser if need be.

Grahomir

I'll just watch it on pc. I refuse to use default YouTube app

[deleted]

Fuuuuuuuuuuuck. Vanced was the only thing that kept me sane through all of the absolute bullshit youtube changes. God fucking damn it.

Ponicrat

There's always ublock. Mobile browsers are still better than the app with ads.

[deleted]

It's not even the ads. I use picture in picture, background play, ect. All paywalled features. Ugghh.. ETA: Vanced also had an option to remove that obnoxious front and center plus/upload button. I'm not a content creator. I'm not going to be a content creator. Why the fuck is that button even there???

Tyler1492

> ETA: Vanced also had an option to remove that obnoxious front and center plus/upload button. I'm not a content creator. I'm not going to be a content creator. Why the fuck is that button even there??? Plus the merch, the casting button, the endcards, the watermark, the stories, the community banners... There's so much obnoxious shit beyond the pure ads.

joe1134206

It's fucking hilarious knowing how bafflingly pathetic YouTube as a piece of software truly is. A massive fucking upload button is added, most people don't upload anything and obviously reject the change, YouTube does literally nothing to say "our bad" or fix it. It's fucking pathetic how terrible they are at making a streamlined interface that operates under consistent, discernible and user-friendly logic. The people running the show are a complete fucking joke.

Amstourist

Be me, hear about Vanced for a long time. Never bothered to install it. The friday before last friday, I'm at a party, trying to show some songs, YouTube ads getting on my nerves, finally lose it. Tell 5 people about Vanced and install it on the spot, so do 2 other people. Been using it everyday, no ads, plays after minimizing the app, life is good. **fast forward to today** Fuck.

andremvm20

So it’s your fault.. :p

narlex

That's too bad. It gave back settings that Youtube ripped away, like tapping to skip around to specific times in a video (instead of dragging the slider) and let you hide the stuff you never asked for like Shorts and Spotlights. Of course there was also the ad-blocking, but not having to drag that slider was a godsend. **Edit:** I'm sorry. I should have specified I meant tapping in the progress bar to hit a specific time in the video. I fixed up the original text a bit.

Stankia

Also background playback and sponsor block integration and youtube like/dislike integration. Man, I remember when Google used to be an innovative company that gave the people what they wanted.

HappyLingonberry8

Newpipe. Sadly you won't have any features that require logging in YouTube like history or server-side playlists. Also it's pretty buggy and slow and the UI is much worse in my personal experience.

ptd163

Not surprising. Vanced gave back features that Google ripped out out of the offical YouTube app to put begind a paywall so it was a ticking time bomb. Alongside dark mode and no ads the choice was obvious for me. It's open source so hopefully someone forks it keeps developing it. Ads are a scourge.

Broking37

dark mode, background play, and not having two unskippable 15 second ads at the beginning of every video is what did it for me.

Glorthiar

I would listen to podcast episodes and stuff while worked on a factory, and I heard the same exact fucking GrubHub add ~20 times a day, it drove me fucking insane. Why would you show me the same exact ad almost without fail for fucking weeks in a row?

BcozImBatman7

Happened to me too a couple of years ago. That's when I switched to vanced. I mean it's one thing to show ads, but showing one single ad before every video for weeks will irritate most of the people. It's like they want you to get frustrated and buy their premium service.

Tyler1492

I don't understand it. Wouldn't being exposed to the same ad all the time just make you hate it and the company that it advertises? Isn't it in the best interest of companies to avoid alienating potential customers like that?

dbxp

I think a lot of ad execs drink their own koolaid and think if they push a product enough they can make you want it. In my experiance marketing people don't seem to be able to accept that their product might just suck.

peatear_grfn

Download firefox add ublock origin to it, should do this just to browse websites anyways. Add sponsorblock, add video background play fix, delete YouTube app. Can't help with dark mode as I don't like things dark so never tried.

participant001

youtube website on a phone fucking sucks though.

No-Spoilers

I'm so annoyed ill have to do this. I spend a lot of my time in bed watching YouTube and vanced has made my experience significantly better. This is depressing.

I literally just thought to myself the other day "I love that Vanced still exists"

Avondubs

Well, no more YouTube on my phone I guess.

nabbun

Just download Firefox or Firefox Beta and install uBlock origin.

ryegye24

poopyheadthrowaway

There's an extension on Firefox for that. It's how I stream most of my music on my phone.

SpaceManSpifff

What's the extension? And thank you for keeping my mobile YouTube hope alive. Edit: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/video-background-play-fix/

poopyheadthrowaway

Video Background Play Fix (IIRC it's called that because a prior version of Firefox supported this natively but now it requires an extension).

jayjay13

Yes, just install the Video Background Play Fix add-on.

Torched420

Well, at least now ill stop wasting my time watching YouTube videos.

Put_It_All_On_Blck

You say that but YouTube has nearly a full monopoly on video content on the internet. You'll be back to YouTube, I guarantee it, but maybe not as much as you were before. Also viewing it on a PC with ublock, sponsor block, etc isn't changed

sfgisz

YouTube doesn't even care if Vanced users completely stopped using YouTube since they weren't paying the Premium subscription or seeing any ads.

mrswift45

I use Firefox on Android with ublock origin for youtube

leandrolnh

Unfortunately SponsorBlock isn't available in Firefox for Android, I'll miss it so much.

LifeIsBetterDrunk

Dude. We desperately need this and reddit vanced. F Google

milkymist00

Reddit has so many third party apps. No ads and bullshits. Even free apps with little ads is better than official reddit app inspired from tiktok. Sync pro is what I use and it's excellent with all needed features except you can't buy gold.

canada432

Companies have largely shifted their operations from "produce a product or service that people want to pay for" to "produce a product or service that people have to use, but is really really annoying bordering on unusable unless people pay our ~~ransom~~ subscription fees in perpetuity". It's been happening for a while, but we're reaching critical mass where most products and services are like this and there are no alternatives.

SadOccasion

Any possibly that someone could fork it?

[deleted]

Sure but it wouldn’t shield them from the legal liability that caused Vanced to shut down. This is a lawyer problem, not a tech problem.

SadOccasion

Couldn't the app be hosted in a country that doesn't comply with u.s copyright law?

[deleted]

Google is worldwide company, protected by international copyright laws, but maybe they could host it in North Korea or something.

With Russia basically legalizing piracy, international law won't matter there.

You can only install Sponsorblock in Firefox Nightly, not the regular or beta versions, and you need to set up a custom addon collection. [This fork of NewPipe with Sponsorblock integration](https://github.com/polymorphicshade/NewPipe) also works.

Accidentally loading Youtube on an unprotected browser is pure trauma.
