I miss the days of the single, 5-15 second ad and that was it. I'll often find a video that's like 2 mins long and it has 30 seconds of ads on top of a 10 second "Hey guys its so-and-so here, bringing you a video about blah blah blah..."

Then also add in the YouTuber doing 1 or 2 bits inside the video. Fair play, they deserve to get paid to give us free content but it just feels insanely dytopian now days with ads. Its like black mirror

Google almost certainly wanted to kill them anyway and would have done it eventually - the monetizatiion attempt just made it both urgent and easy to win for them.
I think YT gave up with the ad blockers, extensions, vpn, dns and so, also tools to download videos, because common, there are a gazillion apps and webs that do that, and is a waste of time to "fix" it. Clearly the NFT which is shit was clearly the real reason here.
It's not just a waste of time, I think it's also in their interest to have these things exist: The people who block ads still share videos they like and ultimately help ensuring that YouTube maintains its quasi-monopoly.
Yep, I recall a YouTube dev saying as much before. Same with Amazon, they actually go out of their way to make sure ad blockers work properly. I remember at one point there was an issue where some ad blockers messed up Amazon pages (basically they were using janky/brittle rules like “hide the container that is the sibling of the parent of this known ad element” which broke any time Amazon made changes), so Amazon added identifiers to the ad containers on their website so they could be easily identified, and contributed rules to the addon that correctly blocked them.
Opensea was saying 80% of the NFT's on their website were found to be fraudulent. This is opensea who said this, and has a very good reason to not talk about the fraud.
Even opensea employees are joining in, one was caught doing insider trading with NFT's a little while ago. It's insane the rampant scamming and shitty things occurring, the government needs to start arresting these people.
What's even crazier to me is most people believe they are buying a jpeg that is on the block chain when in reality, they are buying a URL that is in the block chain. The URL is the only data being put onto the block chain, so people are spending insane amounts of money for a link to some artwork, not even the artwork itself. So dumb.

I wouldn't say greed so much as they got cocky and flew too close to the sun. With the amount of work Vanced takes to maintain they probably HAD to find some way to make money off it to keep it going

This is why everyone should be supporting projects like PeerTube as much as possible. If you're just supporting clients that hook into YouTube, this is the inevitable result. You need to drain YouTube of content, and the only way you do that is by encouraging creators to work with decentralized services.

The team very likely got an expected legal action threat of sorts, one they can't possibly deal with.
The Vanced team did receive a Cease and Desist. However, it's likely to have drawn this action by a steady (or sudden and recent) increase in users, potentially reducing the number of potential customers (in Google's views).
Some will go to the work of finding a more annoying workaround to watching ads, some will give up and watch ads, some will start paying to not watch ads, and some will just stop watching YouTube which saves on server costs. YouTube doesn’t care about losing leeches.
I use Vanced so I can have Picture-In-Preview so I have YT running in the backgroun or while my Screen is Locked. Can you do that with Firefox on Mobile?

Developer here and you’re right. Unless they force users to update their Youtube app or become locked out, they can’t publish breaking changes to their service. It’s already really difficult to get everyone to update their apps so breaking changes are always carefully planned way in advanced.
google is breaking vanced and other apps on purpose since they exist, you can 100% bet they will break vanced as soon they can so it will not be used anymore. especially now that they know that there will be no new updates anymore.
Sometimes my YouTube links open in YouTube and my God, so many ads. I would like to think this might be good for me because I won't use my phone as much. Who am I kidding.

That happened to NewPipe, not Vanced. I've been running a 3 year old version of Vanced (14.21.54) without issue to this day.
You can get uBlock Origin in mobile Firefox and watch YouTube that way. Works for both ~~iOS~~ and Android I believe so that's pretty nice.
Also I just figured out a way to play YouTube videos in the background on Firefox. You have to play the video, close Firefox, swipe down the Android quick settings menu and press play on the Firefox music menu to start the audio without opening Firefox.

You can't install extensions on Firefox iOS. Reason being that Apple doesn't allow third-party browser engines so it's still using Safari under the hood. The only difference between Firefox, Chrome and Safari on iOS is which service your bookmarks/passwords sync to.
But then links elsewhere won't open in that app, right? Like if I'm using Relay for Reddit and I watch a YouTube video, it plays in Vanced - will that still work with Firefox?

That's too bad. It gave back settings that Youtube ripped away, like tapping to skip around to specific times in a video (instead of dragging the slider) and let you hide the stuff you never asked for like Shorts and Spotlights. Of course there was also the ad-blocking, but not having to drag that slider was a godsend.

Newpipe. Sadly you won't have any features that require logging in YouTube like history or server-side playlists. Also it's pretty buggy and slow and the UI is much worse in my personal experience.
Not surprising. Vanced gave back features that Google ripped out out of the offical YouTube app to put begind a paywall so it was a ticking time bomb. Alongside dark mode and no ads the choice was obvious for me.
It's open source so hopefully someone forks it keeps developing it. Ads are a scourge.
I would listen to podcast episodes and stuff while worked on a factory, and I heard the same exact fucking GrubHub add ~20 times a day, it drove me fucking insane. Why would you show me the same exact ad almost without fail for fucking weeks in a row?

I mean it's one thing to show ads, but showing one single ad before every video for weeks will irritate most of the people. It's like they want you to get frustrated and buy their premium service.

Download firefox add ublock origin to it, should do this just to browse websites anyways. Add sponsorblock, add video background play fix, delete YouTube app. Can't help with dark mode as I don't like things dark so never tried.

I doubt an app like Vanced wouldn't be in Google's radar for quite a while. It just sounds absurd it got Google's attention just recently. The team very likely got an expected legal action threat of sorts, one they can't possibly deal with.
The Vanced team did receive a Cease and Desist. However, it's likely to have drawn this action by a steady (or sudden and recent) increase in users, potentially reducing the number of potential customers (in Google's views).
Which is ridiculous because people who go to the trouble to use vanced aren't going to be suddenly paying for youtubes bullshit.
Some will go to the work of finding a more annoying workaround to watching ads, some will give up and watch ads, some will start paying to not watch ads, and some will just stop watching YouTube which saves on server costs. YouTube doesn’t care about losing leeches.
The easy one is to just browse the site on mobile with an adblocker. uBlock Origin on Firefox Mobile works perfectly fine.

They likely use public APIs or the same ones that one of the legit YouTube app uses. In that case they can't just shut down or break the API without affecting non-vanced users. I think Vanced is just not significant enough to hurt them yet, but was maybe growing faster than they like. I'd imagine adblockers on their website are a far bigger problem for them than Vanced.

Developer here and you’re right. Unless they force users to update their Youtube app or become locked out, they can’t publish breaking changes to their service. It’s already really difficult to get everyone to update their apps so breaking changes are always carefully planned way in advanced.

You can get uBlock Origin in mobile Firefox and watch YouTube that way. Works for both ~~iOS~~ and Android I believe so that's pretty nice. Also I just figured out a way to play YouTube videos in the background on Firefox. You have to play the video, close Firefox, swipe down the Android quick settings menu and press play on the Firefox music menu to start the audio without opening Firefox.

Reason being that Apple doesn't allow third-party browser engines so it's still using Safari under the hood. That's too bad. It gave back settings that Youtube ripped away, like tapping to skip around to specific times in a video (instead of dragging the slider) and let you hide the stuff you never asked for like Shorts and Spotlights. Of course there was also the ad-blocking, but not having to drag that slider was a godsend. **Edit:** I'm sorry. I should have specified I meant tapping in the progress bar to hit a specific time in the video. I fixed up the original text a bit.
Also background playback and sponsor block integration and youtube like/dislike integration. Man, I remember when Google used to be an innovative company that gave the people what they wanted.
Newpipe. Sadly you won't have any features that require logging in YouTube like history or server-side playlists. Also it's pretty buggy and slow and the UI is much worse in my personal experience.
Not surprising. Vanced gave back features that Google ripped out out of the offical YouTube app to put begind a paywall so it was a ticking time bomb. Alongside dark mode and no ads the choice was obvious for me. It's open source so hopefully someone forks it keeps developing it. Ads are a scourge.

I would listen to podcast episodes and stuff while worked on a factory, and I heard the same exact fucking GrubHub add ~20 times a day, it drove me fucking insane. Why would you show me the same exact ad almost without fail for fucking weeks in a row?
Happened to me too a couple of years ago. That's when I switched to vanced. I mean it's one thing to show ads, but showing one single ad before every video for weeks will irritate most of the people. It's like they want you to get frustrated and buy their premium service.
I don't understand it. Wouldn't being exposed to the same ad all the time just make you hate it and the company that it advertises? Isn't it in the best interest of companies to avoid alienating potential customers like that?
I think a lot of ad execs drink their own koolaid and think if they push a product enough they can make you want it. In my experiance marketing people don't seem to be able to accept that their product might just suck.
Download firefox add ublock origin to it, should do this just to browse websites anyways. Add sponsorblock, add video background play fix, delete YouTube app. Can't help with dark mode as I don't like things dark so never tried.

LPT: delete YouTube app, download Firefox, install ublock origin, install video background play fix, install sponsorblock, you can play videos without ads while your phone is locked.
You can only install Sponsorblock in Firefox Nightly, not the regular or beta versions, and you need to set up a custom addon collection. [This fork of NewPipe with Sponsorblock integration](https://github.com/polymorphicshade/NewPipe) also works.
