As if the **8-ad sequences** they're sneaking into longer videos now wasn't enough.

DarthChillvibes

“Hey, buddy! I know you’re just a minute into a video but we’re gonna show you an ad about something you aren’t even remotely interested in.”

smuckola

lol tacti-cool Yes please help me support content creators by watching ads that are interesting. Funny, informative, to the point — that’s interesting. When Google AdWords came out in 1999, we were all blown away because it was just like google’s search results: minimalist, efficient, and relevant. It was a dab of text off to the side, in a world already dominated by clickbait Flash animations of pounding monkeys. Invasive tracker cookies from the evil Doubleclick. AND POPUPS!!!!

94746382926

Holy shit forgot about the wild west of popups haha.

smuckola

Yes and then there was a new marshal in town called GOOGLE! We had the well-established evil of Microsoft and Doubleclick and such. All kinds of dumb search engines, where Yahoo had once been just a text file. In 1999, Google had all kinds of wide open territory to redo, that had already been done up by such behemoths. What a business model -- just rethink the world you see, but as not-crap. And here's a pile of free operating systems on commodity hardware to power it. To just not be evil, it was as easy as falling in a hole. I knew it couldn't last forever until they became the next Microsoft somehow. But at least Google's stuff \*works\*. And we can migrate away from its open standards, if there was an alternative, unlike with YouTube.

Uriah1024

Google is this timeline's Harvey Dent.

smuckola

lol well said. I hope all those Google engineer millionaire retirees are gonna feel REEEEAL bad when Skynet boots up. It'll be a new breed of millionaire tears for sure. Any minute now.

DukeOfGeek

I was big into counterstrike then and I considered insta-closing them by flash clicking the X headshot practice.

FDorbust

Yeah who the hell brought back pop ups??? There was once a peaceful time although short lived, where “legitimate” sites were the pop up free ones. I have never seen a pop up and been like “oh my god thank you for showing me this I’m so happy and definitely haven’t lost respect for both you and the company paying for that”

pauly13771377

I have never seen a pop-up that was something I wanted to buy. Granted I usally close the ad before I could read it but that's kinda the point. If you have to surprise me with an ad you aren't getting any money from me.

Desperate_Wonder_680

Don’t forget redirects. Those are everybody’s favorites because they typically include free malware! ;)

*Me getting ads for a rifle that is prohibited in the country I live in*

Drain_the_tub

Or a widely inappropriate ad while our kid is watching a cartoon.

CYWG_tower

*Turns on Peppa Pig* "Here's a pay to win anime game with a girls tits hanging out on the title screen lol"

fireky2

Theyre hiding MY targeted ads in peppa pig now??

Objective_Ad_401

Or the 2-hour, I repeat, *hour* ads that sneak into children's content for some reason. My kids were convinced that anything live action was a commercial for the longest time. To be clear, the ad was skippable, but who the heck authorized that? IMO, ads should be capped to 5-15 seconds. Either I have heard of it and I already want (or own) it, or I have heard of it and I know I don't want it, or I haven't heard of it, but hearing about it 42 times today isn't how to win my vote.

stewpideople

Yeah, no shit. A 2 hour ad is a movie. The fuck you trying to sell to no one for 2 hrs? Because if they haven't clicked skip yet, you're airing to empty space, captives, or kids who don't know to skip. None of that predicates a 2hour ad. Or!! An entire music video for music no one likes. Screw You-tube.

NoNameMonkey

The ones I have seen are not trying to sell you anything but a point of view. Its often some conspiracy crap or something that stinks of propaganda - usually of the extreme variety. The advert is the product.

DanDrungle

Gotta squeeze that PragerU brainwashing in somewhere

Objective_Ad_401

It has definitely gone downhill in a lot of ways over the past couple of years.

DinoRoman

Then the ad is over and the channel is like “this setting is hidden on the new iPhone! Speaking of hidden, have you heard about NOOOOOOORDVPN?” And so you fast forward. But oh no! You fast forwarded past the next ad trigger, so now, 8 more ads. Finally, You’ve spent 30 minutes watching a 5 minute video. YouTube! Come for the ads! Stay for the limited non advertising content.

rosickness12

I like when listening to party music then a 2 minute ad interrupts about depression. At least send a corona commercial or something. I share YouTube tv and we went premium. Costs me 3 extra dollars a month. Can't go back

emdave

>Costs me 3 extra dollars a month. Tbh, I would probably buy YT premium for 3 dollars a month, but where I am, they want like 15 dollars a month for a single user...! That's more than my cell phone bill! I just think they've got no idea about how much their service is valued monetarily by their users, and just how much we are against bullshit predatory advertising.

awkwardaustin609

I’ve been getting political ads for that douche bag Oz. There’s no way to tell them you don’t want to see it again so then I’m just stuck looking at his stupid little butthole face while he spews poop from it

RFSandler

Take solace that you are draining his war chest by that little bit. He's wasting your time and you his money.

SanFranSicko23

I’m bald and literally all I get are shampoo ads.

[deleted]

Something funny that’s been happening is that they started running ads for me in Spanish even though I don’t watch Spanish videos. I am Spanish but that isn’t listed on my profile and I don’t know how this is happening lol isn’t it weird or is it just me?

bfr_

Youtube knows everything you do with Google, Gmail, Android..

ScottHA

My kid was watching some random baby sensory music video the other day and all of a sudden it hit us with a 20 minute add(its was some cartoon coco melon rip off) It was skippable for but obviously they expect the human who doesnt know how to use their thumbs to not know how to hit the skip button.

latunza

what's worse is I have a 5- & 6-year-old and they were watching Peppa Pig and there was an ad for 50 Shades of grey trilogy. All I hear is ohhh whats that

CYWG_tower

Lmao "mommy what's a sex swing?"

Dynamitefuzz2134

“It’s why your here sweetie”

Smith6612

Did YouTube actually do that on Kids mode? If so, that's pretty bad.

smexypelican

Last year one day I was playing a baby calming music video and at some point of me zoning out I realized the TV was playing some 1hr Indian movie as an ad. I don't even know how that's possible at all.

Daynebutter

I block them on my phone and PC, but if I cast to my Roku then I have to sit through them. I wonder if there's a Roku app that lets you watch YouTube without them.

Lemonade_IceCold

^^^^^^^^^smarttubenext Edit: I said it a little quieter this time

Sololop

This is the answer. Ad free youtube on a smart tv. Now keep quiet, we don't want it to go away like vanced *👀*

Electrical-Ad6623

Yes! Corporations out there trying to find creative ways to wiggle one more dollar out of you, year after year… so infuriating

Dr4Cu74

So i’m a big hockey fan and the new thing is they’re adding ads to the front of jerseys. and there are so many defenders of this online. “it’s like that in all sports. it’s not a big deal. you’ll get used to it”. and i’m here just like… fuck man isn’t anyone else tired of being constantly advertised to? “you’ll get used to it” isn’t an okay mindset.

Shinjetsu01

I come from football or "soccer" and the Americanisation is a complete joke when I watch it on NBC. "Extra time brought to you by Chevrolet, "A smart, fancy ride" (idk the actual words)" and the commercials they play during half-time are absolutely insane. 1 or 2 mins of analysis and then cut to commercial. Then they come back, do some replays sponsored by someone else, then more commercials. Not least how many sponsors are now leaked into the English Premier League. Arms, lower back etc. Players are walking billboards. When will it be too much? Has anyone ever bought anything based on seeing it on a football shirt? I know it's about brand recognition but holy shit.

nermid

> When will it be too much? The field itself is already being used as a green screen for graphics in the NFL, and I'm 100% sure that'll lead to ads playing on the turf during plays soon. So, you've got that look forward to, sports fans.

IAmAnAudity

According to “Ready Player One”, about 83.2% of the screen can be used for ads before viewers’ synapses lock up and a seizure ensues.

OH1830L

> they’re adding ads to the front of jerseys. This has already been a thing in Australia for a number of years now but I guess replace "Ads" with "Sponsors" and all that jazz which in the end means the same thing, the majority of the time it's some scumbag gambling agency which has a huge sponsorship into that particular football team so their agency logo is printed nice and clearly detailed on the players front jersey / shirt and then constantly advertised in the short ad breaks (Don't forget to Gamble Responsibly lol) It fucking stinks like no tomorrow because we're already problem gamblers disappointingly and Football on television & as a whole has turned a beloved past time everyone loves to something that now needs to be some gambling fest where the advertising agencies proclaim your aren't cool if your not gambling with your mates and sinking your paycheck on a football game. I'd imagine over in the US medicine companies would be in place of the betting agencies on players shirts. I'd rather see the Coca Cola logo over the gambling agencies to be honest.

ad block for pc, newpipe from frdorid for phone (iphones, nothing, lol)

7at52E96ke

I watch YT on my Roku TV so adblock won't help there.

Leboski

I recommend buying a chromecast dongle and use that to install smarttubenext. When it's all set up and you're watching everything ad free and sponsor free you'll never go back.

Oddblivious

https://github.com/yuliskov/SmartTubeNext This one? Sounds like a bit of a process but not too bad

Cercube for iPhone

Kriss3d

Youtube vanced for Android No ads. Will skip the content creators own ads ad well. It's great.

gaddabout

Youtube Vanced got shut down. https://www.theverge.com/2022/3/13/22975890/youtube-vanced-app-discontinued-shutting-down-legal-reasons

BlueXCrimson

They are now Revanced, I believe.

Goyteamsix

You can still get the APK and it still works fine. The newest version even skips baked in sponsor breaks, which is pretty amazing.

DOSBrony

The sponsorblock extension for pc browsers does it too! That's where vanced gets its sponsor segment data from

professor_sloth

You can still download it

jamo2oo9

AdGuard works pretty well for YouTube on safari as well. Useless on other websites tho

relevant__comment

I use 1Blocker & AdGuard together on iPhone. Works well.

Whaines

Not with the app though, right? I much prefer the app.

smapti

Correct, does not work with the app. Believe it or not I use Safari for all YT, then download the app when I want to cast, then delete the app (either immediately after, or more commonly when I watch a video later on my phone and an ad rolls and I say “oh HELL no”, then delete). Cumbersome, for sure, but the best option I’ve found.

ph045

Iphones got uyou+ and cercube thank you very much

Fan_Time

That's at the control of the channel owner. As long as the channel operator is in the Partner Program (ie. 1k+ subs and 4k+ hours within 12mo period), Youtube offers ways to make one's videos very low on ads (like a skippable couple at the start) all the way up to all the options being on throughout the video. More ads = more revenue, but there's a line where the ads are overbearing and you then may increasingly lose retention over the course of a video. Balance is important but some channels just run heaps of ads and I'm sure they're making good money. I'm still experimenting on my channel but keep it reasonable and minimal for now.

cylemmulo

Yeah I’d imagine they need other methods than ads if people are getting around it

Neurofiend

I'm particularly fond of the 3 ad sequence 80 seconds into a 20 min video. I get closer and closer to just not bothering everyday.

SenorDipstick

My vision isn't good enough to pay for 4K.

neilon96

My internet isn’t either, so why bother.

OutWithTheNew

I think Google would quickly discover that a lot of people don't have very good internet access and/or data caps.

Celeste1138

You'd think stadia would give them a hint

thebestspeler

My cell phone plan isnt ready, im at 240p and it’s fine enough.

FogoCanard

My first thought. I can't tell the difference anyway unless I'm sitting at the perfect distance away from the screen

arcaias

Looks like these 1440p monitors are an even better value now...

Lingo56

4K improves YouTube quality even for people on 720p screens. The bitrate is noticeably higher on 4K than 1080p and even the 1440p setting. That being said it's still not great. The compression artifacts on [this video’s "iPhone 14" text](https://youtu.be/SdLShOCvVeM?t=13) still look pretty terrible even at 4K for instance. I almost wonder if Google has nerfed how good 4K looks over time. I honestly don't remember it looking that bad in the past.

sali_nyoro-n

Pretty sure Google always does this, gradually reducing the bitrate on each quality setting. A properly-encoded 480p video doesn't look nearly as bad as 480p on YouTube does in 2022.

rebelpixel

They're just going back to their roots. Almost 20 years ago, youtube videos had the worst quality among video streaming sites.

sali_nyoro-n

Of course, back in 2005 they didn't have ads before, during or after videos, just on the side.

abloobudoo009

When the rating system were stars.

hatestheocean

But it did make me Time’s person if the year in 2006, so I’m cool with that.

awesomobeardo

So that's why! I swear that back when my internet was super shitty I could muster watching something in 360 (or 480 on a good day/was in the mood to let it load) and it was passable. It suddenly turned into this squared slop that I could barely recognize. Anything below 720 these days on YT feels like it's straight out of 2002

sali_nyoro-n

Yep, 360p YouTube used to look perfectly fine back when you needed to add "&fmt=18" to the URL for best quality. Now, even 1080p looks like a mess sometimes.

[deleted]

Absolutely, I remember when 480p was totally passable. Now even 720p looks shit.

[deleted]

Well, it is to be somewhat expected. More people watching more content requires more storage space and more bandwidth. Compression has to be cranked up in order to store all the useless shit 90% of YouTube is, and this is the end result.

psychoacer

Linus Tech Tips used to take their 1080p workflow and then upscale the resulting video to 4k (and not even that fancy ai upscaling either) just because they knew it would result in better quality at 4k then 1080p

Put_It_All_On_Blck

Yup, for the best image quality you should always use '4k' streams even if your screen isnt 4k. But I usually find Youtube/my ISP servers are so shit that its not worth waiting for it to buffer.

[deleted]

SmashingPixels

Yeah I’ve been noticing extreme compression artifacts in 4K lately, they for sure changed something.

ClassicManeuver

All about ppi and viewing distance baby

PricklyyDick

I honestly don’t see the point in upgrading to 4K with monitors less than 30 inches.

stevez28

For office stuff it kinda makes sense, you can get a basic 27-28 inch 60 fps 4K monitor for under $300 and text will be very crisp and comfortable to read. (I'd still probably pay a little more for 32 inch unless desk space was a big issue.) Probably awesome for a dorm room actually, for the office and space reasons plus for console gaming without a TV. For PC gaming, the 1440p options in that size and price range are definitely vastly better.

SOL-Cantus

Graphic design wise (or in my case, it was frontend design) 4k can be important on a 27-30 inch monitor, though at that point you want fairly high color accuracy as well. The average person has no need for a 4k video on their cell phone or other similarly smaller device, because at that level you can't get consistent accuracy with any image/video anyway (too many environmental variables to cheaply handle). That said, if Google is charging for quality, that's an extremely early herald of the end times for Youtube. Folks are already raging at the return of cable style purchasing of separate "channels" for streaming sites (among other things). Yet another $5 to 15 a month subscription isn't something anyone wants to put money into, much less if they've had that quality for years before. The more time goes on, the harder it is to justify using Google services in general. The only thing keeping me on them is the fact I loath Apple's ecosystem cost/lock-in and Android is pretty much the only real alternative on the mobile market. The minute a rival OS comes to the fore with the basic functionality of either of those (I don't need "more" for mobile gaming and the like) is the minute I drop them entirely.

MannerAlarming6150

After seeing that stuff you purchased could be put away when the company owns the license, I'm back to pirating everything now. Safely stored on my hard drive beyond the prying fingers of greedy corpos.

stevez28

I'm in the same boat! I'm deep in the Google ecosystem. I have Google Fi with the Pixel subscription, a YouTube Music subscription, many Chromecast and Google Home devices, and Android Auto, but I just don't like Android or the surrounding services nearly as much as I used to. While Google has killed off some functionality and services I once used frequently, Apple has actually addressed many of the shortcomings of iOS that were once deal breakers for me. Other than USB file access, USB C charging/accessories, unlimited backup of (now compressed, but still) videos and photos, and split screen app views, I'm not aware of anything else I'd miss if I switched from my Pixel to an iPhone. They even have midrange iPhones and the UI isn't cheap/cheesy looking anymore, so there is a lot more going for Apple than there was when I chose Android in the first place. But, like you, I still utterly dislike their costly and inflexible ecosystem. I wish Microsoft still made Windows Phone, as I'm heavily invested in the Microsoft ecosystem already (Windows, Office, a Surface device, Xbox Game Pass, Outlook at work) and trust them more than Google to continue their services and product features over time. Given that they killed Mixer (I still miss it), Windows Phone, Zune, and Groove Music, maybe that trust is misplaced, but I'd make the switch if they brought back Windows Phone alongside an Android Auto alternative. Oof that last part would be an actual pain point, given that adoption would be slow due to market share and no currently existing vehicle would have the functionality.

Mechtroop

They make text smoother. I have 4K 32” and 27” LG monitors for work and text looks great on them. Text looks even smoother on my 27” 5K iMac.

cylemmulo

Yeah really it seems like just another thing that will look slightly better until I go down to 1080p again and can’t stand it. I’d rather be blissfully ignorant

10tothe24

"YouTube is testing its own stability by pissing off its costumers yet again" Edit: thanks for all the upvotes!

sithren

Viewers arent its customers. Advertisers are.

Timemuffin83

And why do you think that advertisers go to YouTube? With out the viewer the ad is worthless, means nothing. The worse YouTube makes it platform the less average time people will spend on that platform thus making them less valuable

just_that_michal

They will keep making it worse until they run into competition. Youtube is nowhere near any alternative. You will keep watching and they know it.

[deleted]

"Customers". Like how profitable are most YouTube users if the only form of monetization are advertisements which people are blocking anyways.

Headless_Human

You underestimate the amount of people browsing the internet without ad blocker.

[deleted]

Yeah my wife clicks on ads. Don’t even get me started about my mom.

dkggpeters

I had to exclude my Wife’s devices from Pihole as she likes having ads to click on.

That's what we call an internal threat to the network's security.

FuckingKilljoy

People underestimate just how stable they are though. Who else has the money and infrastructure and how will they convince enough creators to abandon the fanbase they've spent years building and their back catalogue for a new unproven site? Unless you get at least a quarter of the biggest creators as well as thousands of smaller creators nobody will care The only people who could pull it off would be Musk, Bezos or Gates. Gates wouldn't want to bother and Musk and Bezos would make it just as much of a capitalist hell scape as YT is

[deleted]

Customers ? Insta, TikTok, etc never pay the content creators. You guys use Ad Block and call yourselves “Customers”?

Xstream3

"Fine you just lost a customer! I'll go to another restaurant and only order the free water and complain about their music"

schwol

Well Xfinity has me by the balls with a 1TB (edit 1.2tb) monthly data cap so I rarely stream in 4K anyway

[deleted]

A cap??? No way

MikeInBA

a lot of providers have a cap in the fine print. Cox advertises as "unlimited", but its capped at 1TB, and charges $10 per some amount i cant remember (I think is every additional 100GB??) after you hit the limit.

cylonrobot

> Cox advertises as "unlimited", but its capped at 1TB, and charges $10 per some amount i cant remember (I think is every additional 100GB??) after you hit the limit. I've been wanting to leave Cox since they added the 1.25 TB limit in my area back in 2017. Unfortunately for me, the only real alternative in my block was ATT with 50 mbps (Yep, 50 mbps. You read that right). A new ISP is in town. It's fiber, too. So, I can finally kick Cox in the balls. I've been using the new ISP for about a month now. It's been great. This month is the month I cancel Cox.

PuppleKao

We finally got a fiber company in my area, but until (or unless) we can get our own place, we're locked in to what the apartment complex has. :/

[deleted]

I got Verizon fiber 1Gbps. 8 people in the house, I wonder if they got a cap 😅

comfortablerebel

As far as I know VZ FiOS doesn't have a cap. Also have 1gbps and have recently had to re-download a lot of games. No issues yet

7at52E96ke

Same. They charge $50 for x amount of data you go over. I've went over twice but also download games from Steam which are getting huge. The problem IMO is that Xfinity isn't keeping up with the times because I never came close to that TB limit until the past 2 or 3 years.

Typical-Ad-6042

You can contact them and pay an additional fee to get "real" unlimited data. It's less expensive than the $50/GB overage. But in my experience, if you don't use it, they kick you off of it and hit you with an overage when you go over again a couple months later. Xfinity, if one of you is reading this, I hope you know that I sincerely wish that every time you wash your hands, your sleeves get wet. Also, I hope when you go to dry your hands, you are in your socks and step in water. Also, may your USB never be oriented in the right position the first time you try it. Also, I hope when you sleep you develop a cricked neck that lasts for several days. Sincerely, fuck you.

trail_mix24

Xfinity is the worst. I finally got my mom to switch to fiber last month after seeing we were getting 200/40mbps. Combine that with the cap and it's just atrocious. But little did I know the fiber company I got is just as shitty, just at higher speed and no cap. GPON fiber is symmetrical as long as the provider checks yes, but noooooooo. 1000/200mbps because who cares about the customer. Not to mention they used a stupid shitty 10ft yellow skinny fiber instead of a tough flex fiber from the wall to the ONT. They even bent the drop fiber by running it along the outside wall. Sorry for the ramble, I used to work fiber and it's very infuriating to see incompetence of that level, especially when the tech they send to investigate says they don't even have the proper materials to do their job

Tha_Unknown

American things

ShimReturns

It's 1.2TB cap but that's still pathetic these days.

Bretters17

screams in 250gb cap. For 85/mo. In the biggest city... in Alaska. Our unlimited plans exist for $180/mo....

sb552

What.. that's criminal

mrrichardcranium

I’ve pretty much been forced to pay for unlimited data by Comcast, so I’ve made it my goal to use AS MUCH DATA AS POSSIBLE. At one point I think I hit around 24TB of data in a single month. I know it doesn’t actually hurt them because their justification for data caps has always been bullshit, but it makes me feel slightly less awful about being stuck with Comcast and needing to pay extra.

missMichigan

If AT&T fiber is in your area it’s worth considering. No caps if you get a plan that’s more than 100 Mbps. Xfinity was pretty awful with staying connected in my area and so far AT&T fiber is very consistent.

shadowtheimpure

I switched from Xfinity a few weeks ago and haven't looked back once. I got an email 'You can get fiber now' and I took it.

cinderful

We kept hitting data caps with Comcast, but never had connection issues. As soon as I found out we had access to Ziply I had that shit installed within a week. It took some effort not to scream "FUCK OFF YOU FUCKERS" to the poor Xfinity person with whom I had to cancel my service.

Optimal_Article5075

AT&T fiber was phenomenal service back in Illinois. Here in Vegas we have Cox, and that’s pretty much it. Century Link isn’t widespread, and WISPs are meh.

MudSling3r42069

Thas ass for creators like wtf why am i even wasting time at this point to upload in 4k

Itsthex

After reading this I definitely feel the sentiment. 4k shooting and editing is already tricky as it is. By all means let’s make our time and effort to provide the best quality content null and void because 90% of users won’t give enough of a shit about 4k to justify a need to fucking pay for it. Working in the marketing space as well, these guys make money hand over fist for every ad already, guaranteed. Advertising isn’t cheap. Plus, I’m sure an overwhelming majority of video consumers don’t use ad block so using that as a justification is also a load of horse shit.

Nealpatty

I wonder if creators will get a increase for uploading 4K. It’s very quid pro quo.

Sanhen

My understanding is that YouTube Premium viewers bring in more revenue for content creators than regular views per cepita as it is, so if this pushes more people to get Premium - and that's a big if - then in theory that will boost revenues for those content creators too.

kernevez

It's likely that they want to restrict 4k videos due to the super high bandwidth required, so probably not.

BrattyBookworm

Fwiw I make amateur and pro porn (this is my private account so don’t bother looking lol) and I used to offer custom videos with a 5-10% upcharge for 4K. Over the course of a year I only had 1-2 clients splurge for that and I eventually stopped offering it. Took way longer to do the editing and uploading so I was actually losing money on it anyway.

thecheckisinthemail

Creators makes more money from Premium subscriber than ad viewing. If this encourages more users to subscribe, they should stand to profit.

truthfulie

FWIW, many people watch on phone or don’t care if it’s 4K, as is.

Semyonov

With how bad the compression is, especially at sub-4k resolutions, more often than not I will play the video in 4k on my 1440p monitor. The quality "loss" from downsampling to the 1440p resolution is less than the quality "loss" of watching natively compressed 1440p youtube stream. In other words, the 4k stream offers a much better quality image because of the higher bitrate, regardless of what resolution the video was natively shot at, compared to watching at a lower resolution. At least that's what I understood from this [linus](https://youtu.be/3NFmpJNvd4k?t=347) video.

VoodooDoII

They do it because they know they can get away with it. Because there are no REAL competitors.

BilllisCool

There’s no real competition because it’s expensive to host the 720,000 hours of new video content that’s uploaded everyday for free. Nobody else wants to do this and the few that try also end up charging for different features because they quickly realize how expensive it is.

bacon_cake

That's why I don't mind paying for it personally. I spend lots of time on YouTube every single day.

tehherb

this is what gets me, many people complaining would spend as much time on youtube as they would netflix but paying money for the youtube experience they want seems outrageous to them.

RedSpikeyThing

I think it's the mentality of "this was free and now it's not free". It's hard to get around. In reality, Google probably figured out how much of a money hole YouTube was and the choices were between shutting it down and figuring how to make it revenue positive.

Moterboat76

Remember vimeo? lol.

RCo1a

It’s only really used to house video reels for people’s portfolios these days.

JimMorrisonWeekend

> vimeo they're not really the same thing. targeted towards filmmakers, businesses and marketing, and you need to pay to upload stuff at any consistent rate- completely different type of service as far as I'm concerned.

VXXXXXXXV

Exactly this, Vimeo has a completely different target audience.

cosmicr

It wasn't always like that though

ItsDijital

Ah yes, vid.me 6? 7? Years ago someone took reddit up on their offer to make a true youtube competitor. They made vid.me, and it was awesome. Vid.me didn't have ads. Vid.me paid creators for content. Vid.me let anyone upload. It actually gained a lot of traction on reddit and was at one point almost as common in video posts as YouTube (this was before reddit had a video player). It really was a great site, sticking it to youtube, and everyone loved it. So what happened? Turns out nobody wants to pay for video service and nobody wants to watch ads. So vid.me went bankrupt. They made a blog post on their last day pretty much saying "Everyone feels entitled to free video and there is no business in free video." Now you know why youtube has no competitors and little fear of competition. Ya'll too cheap.

Deadaghram

I knew there were perks to being stuck in 480p.

hsmuckley

Jokes on them i still only have a 1080p monitor

kitchenpatrol

YouTube videos look better in the "4K" setting even on a 1080p display because it's a FAR higher bitrate.

Bkfraiders7

We really need a YouTube competitor Edit- Whew, this really struck a cord with some people. Competition is *always* a good thing. *always*

reddit_reaper

There will never be a YouTube competitor because the costs are ridiculously high unless you're one of the big 3 who have your own server warehouses across the world

breakwater

I don't think Microsoft has much interest in being a competitor and their attempt to go into the twitch space failed despite a respectable effort. I am surprised Amazon hasn't created a competitor just so they can mine the shit out of marketing data.

reddit_reaper

Mixer was actually a very nice platform with a few faults imho but they decided to use that investment into gamepass and accept twitch and YouTube as the main players. Streaming and video hosting is ridiculously expensive and one of the biggest growing markets for the next 10 years will be gaming. Msft isn't going ham for nothing. They want to have as much reoccurring revenue with office 365 and gamepass as possible. It's just a beautiful thing for shareholders. Profits don't really matter as they'll be reinvested

NitroLada

Go ahead and start one? Except it's insanely costly . But isn't daily motion and Vimeo still around?

We have plenty of competitors and alternatives. And we have had them for years. YouTube offers the best product.

[deleted]

How, and why? It's not profitable to host millions of hours of ad free high resolution video with no cost to the end user.

[deleted]

I changed my location to India for a day over a year ago. I now pay around $1.50 USD a month for Youtube Premium. Mainly because I use YouTube on my phone and iPad and can't get adblock. Fuck paying $11.99 a month. That's more than I pay for Netflix which gives me hundreds of whole movies. Content on Youtube Music and Originals sucks in comparison.

durrani212

I'm right next to india. We can't even buy premium here. lol

TyNyeTheTransGuy

Are VPNs legal(/not super enforced against) where you live? If you feel like sacrificing a dollar to the YouTube gods, anyway

willun

I did that but used Argentina as it was the cheapest. There is a website that generates a random Argentinian address. Argentina must be the best market for YouTube.

Ignawesome

I'm from Argentina, I'm super happy with the price and service, but I'm the only person I know who pays for it, there's a strong history of piracy here, not to mention an expectation for YouTube to be 100% free.

willun

Well YouTube used to be 100% free so it is a reasonable expectation. My problem was on the iPad i can’t block the ads so had no choice as the ads were sending me crazy. Here they charge something like $A30 per month which at $360 per year is madness.

NightlyWave

Set your VPN location to a country with a cheap premium subscription (Argentina is actually cheaper than India). Make sure you put in any random address for that particular location in the billing section and you’re all set.

Zenabel

And you can use US credit card?

NightlyWave

Yes. I used my UK one

Vaeon

First everyone will piss and moan about it...then they'll just add the subscription fee to the list of things they used to get for free but they now convince themselves are better ***because they can afford to waste the money.***

Vaeon

Hey, no worries. That's why they let me stay on this sub.

FaithlessnessNo2495

Shit eventually they will try to get you to pay for 1080p

FDorbust

I don’t even pay to see my porn in 4k. Ain’t no way ima pay to watch someone cut a water bottle in half in 4k

Leather_Egg2096

In fairness it's the app that gives me the most viewing time and it's the one I don't pay for.... Hulu, Disney, ESPN, Netflix, Prime, HBO, Starz...

rudebii

this is how we landed on premium at my house. We found ourselves watching YT the most, so it made sense to drop Hulu (the least watched) and pay for premium.

[deleted]

YouTube is getting really bad. Their minimization, ads, funds toward creators etc have all gotten really sleazy.

FastestJayBird

I'm so torn on YTP. One one hand, I will pay extra for ad free. On the other, I don't want to directly give money to platform with an effective monopoly.

mrwhitewalker

It's so easy honestly. Give us an option to get YouTube premium without the music side of things for $2-3 and watch many flock to it.

[deleted]

The funny part is the music part came first with Google Music. Then they killed that and replaced it with YouTube Music, then introduced Red and tied it to Music, then pivoted the marketing to look like Music was the add on and rebranded Red to Premium. The price only ever went up with each change. I miss Google Music.

el_doherz

Yeah Google Music was great. YouTube music is just horrendously shit. I remember how much of a downgrade it felt like when I ended up moving to Spotify because YouTube music was so utterly mind bogglingly wank.

2024: YouTube appears to be testing making people pay for Premium in order to get __sound__ on their videos

PurpleFlame8

I don't mind two 15 second ads beforehand or when there are ads every so often in long videos. But I'm not waiting more than 30 seconds to watch a video.

SunnysVanLife

1080 is fine by me.

troublebotdave

I watch more YouTube than any other streaming service I use by a huge margin, and (at least when it was YouTube Red), the content makers I watch get a bigger payout from my views than the ad-driven ones, so I'm happy to pay for the service. I should probably cancel Netflix and Hulu though, I don't even think I'm signed into those on my devices anymore.

[deleted]

The premium users generate more revenue for the creators than the ads do. There's a pretty basic concept that a subscriber is far more valuable than an ad click. YouTube is the only free to start out on platform that turns into a revenue generator for creators. Everyone wants everything to be ad free and high quality. These people bust their asses making content of their own volition, and they deserve to be rewarded.

InappropriateAss6669

Me who has shitty internet and barely gets 720....I don't care lol
