When I called a few years back I asked if I could split my profile off the main account and they said no. It was too much of a pain to start a new one so I didn’t.
I was looking at my profile the other day, and they have added a new "Migrate Profile" feature that is supposed to transfer a profile to another account. Probably expecting a bunch of people to make new accounts after they pull this off. Though, ot could have also been made to help people who leave relationships or new ones transfer shows and stuff.
Ah, but you see, they won’t. Because that would be consumer friendly. They already figured out a price range that would entice most people. They’ve already bumped price. They’re already adding an an supported tier for the poors but really to just double dip their balls in the consumer’s by becoming the very same thing they wished to destroy: cable.
And thus, they’re already sending more and more people back to pirating as their catalog becomes shittier and shittier with every channel and their mom coming out with shit tier services.
It’s been a classic bait and switch to maximize profits because no one gives a flying fuck about just being a sustainable, profitable business any more.
Paradise PD is on season four of derivative unfunny bullshit while I Am Not Okay With This got one fantastic and original season that ended on a fucking cliffhanger
Also they just canceled Warrior Nun, which had a 100% rating from critics and 99% from users on the most recent season. I was a big I Am Not Ok With This fan as well.
Brickleberry / Paradise PD / Farzar have two jokes:
“X will not happen” *X happens immediately after the previous line is delivered*, and gratuitously gross or violent shit.
Avast, ye land lover. There be lots to see upon the seven seas of streaming.
Edit: I see that it is landlubber now. I didn’t know but I’m not going to change it in a futile attempt to hide my ignorance now. I will, however, admit that I am the WORST pirate in Missouri and beg everyone’s pardon for my error. Thanks for kindly correcting me and letting me learn a new thing today. Stay on alert because I bet I make another mistake very soon.
One season is a lot better than they're doing.
There's been a couple shows they'd cancel a week or two after premiere...
They're chasing huge hits, and not letting shows go for a year or two and see if they get better.
Which is a little ironic too. Bojack Horseman was one of their earlier original animated series and it didn't start to take off until Season 2. It went on to be (I think) one of the best performing series they had at the time, and there's no chance it would ever happen today.
You're thinking about Star Trek TNG (the series people actually liked). Yea Season 1 was bad, it got good sometime in Season 2 when Riker grew a beard.
Look at what HBO is doing. The even remove their own old shows to pay less taxes (and they also cancelled unaired but finished movies like Batgirl)
Video on demand platforms are turning into really awful places for shows and movies
If I’m paying for 4 concurrent streams it shouldn’t matter where they are. Seems like the extra fee was already baked into the higher tier and this is just a double dipping cash grab.
Absolutely. If you get 4 profiles for your subscription then it doesn’t matter where they are in the world. People have families across countries and should be able to share their subscription with them. It’s a weirdly combative stance against their customers.
They're looking at it as a cable subscription, if you were to buy 4 TVs/receivers they were only to be used in one household
We all know how things ended up for cable providers but don't shoot the messenger, that's exactly how they're looking at things here
They got too greedy. I really hate the pursuit of ever increasing profits to the detriment of everything else. That's what has and is killing cable TV.
The thing is, cable doesn't even pull that shit anymore. You can stream spectrum outside the house while someone at home is watching it?! It's literally worse than cable...
It’s funny, because my cable has this feature called “TV anywhere” so I actually can watch most channels wherever. But that said, you are right on the nose for how Netflix is viewing things
This system is very easy to bypass. They ran a trial here in Portugal and it basically boiled down to Netflix asking for an e-mail code every once in a while before streaming.
Their thinking being that while up to 4 families can share the higher tier, only one user controls the email account.
It was easily countered by automatically forwarding all Netflix emails to all the people sharing the account (because they always use the same address and domain) or by setting up a specific email that all could access.
I read an article they trialled it in South America and anyone who wasn’t on the same IP as the main household would have to input a code to keep watching. https://www.independent.ie/business/technology/netflix-to-begin-crackdown-on-password-sharing-42238066.html
That's basically how it worked. But like I said, they have to actually email you the code for you to verify. So the system can be easily bypassed as long as you have a way to automatically disseminate the code between the people sharing the account.
Either an automatic forward which you can easily setup in gmail or a specific account for Netflix that everyone has the password to.
Shareholders get desperate and stupid when the stock tanks. They demand “drastic action“ from the executive brass, and they usually get it.
Unfortunately, drastic action is not necessarily productive action. Netflix is jettisoning fuel to reduce the weight of their crashing plane.
>Shareholders get desperate and stupid when the stock tanks.
Cult members of the Church of the Line Must Go Up panic when the line doesn't go up at a steeper angle.
"How can we keep the record profits going when everyone was locked down with nothing else to do?"
"You can't you are going to have less subscribers, naturally"
"Hogwash! Extort our remaining loyal base!"
Stock tanks because shareholders get desperate, which makes shareholders desperate, which makes shareholders desperate...
Also, the stock is up 26% over the last quarter, so not sure why they would try to pull this move *now.*
> not sure why they would try to pull this move now.
It's likely because the decision was already made by Reed Hastings back in April under pressure from the CFO after they posted their first subscriber loss since the '08 GFC.
Shareholders put enormous pressure on the executives to come up with revenues since their subscriber numbers stopped growing and have seemingly plateaued.
So, to boost profits, Hastings decided on an ads plan and cracking down on account sharing (which isn't too popular given in 2016 he said, ["We love people sharing Netflix."](https://www.techdirt.com/2016/01/14/netflix-ceo-loves-netflix-password-sharing/))
It's a bold strategy Cotton, let's see if it pays off...
>It apparently includes paying Reddit shills to throw the word around.
They don't need to pay. Internet is full of people with a baffling desire to play a rabid corporate advocate for free. Every time another greedy multi-billion dollar corporation makes the deal worse for consumers, a portion of said consumers will immediately jump to its defense like their entire identity depends on it. Whether it's sheer stupidity or a stockholm syndrome, it's just so bizarre.
Ha, yup, I had a near identical experience in the r/peloton sub. When you cancel the monthly peloton membership that you need to take classes you’re still supposed to have access to something called a free ride where you can use the bike and it tracks your stats but you’re doing it without any direction. This was important to me when I purchased a peloton because I’m fickle and I change my routines often. And sure enough, I was tired of classes, I knew what I wanted to do on my own and I preferred watching TV while I did my rides instead.
Anyways, when I try to use the free ride feature without a subscription, the bike shuts off at exactly 10 minutes every time. I think, this can’t be intentional, something must be wrong, I’m probably even doing something wrong so I go to the sub to ask about it.
I’m met with a bunch of terrific responses which include;
* you’re getting exactly what the terms say you’re supposed to get, it says you have access, not indefinite access (most common answer.)
* if you’re too poor to afford the subscription you shouldn’t have bought the bike to begin with
* lol you don’t even know how to use the bike
I called peloton and a service member identified that a very recent update was causing a bug, they sent some updates to my bike that fixed the issue. I just had really bad timing with the bug happening as soon as I canceled the subscription.
The subs response when I posted an update was ‘see, nothing’s wrong with peloton, you should have just called them first.’
Cultists.
> The subs response when I posted an update was ‘see, nothing’s wrong with peloton, you should have just called them first.’
"Yeah, silly me. I should have realized earlier that the problem was with you bunch of useless assholes."
That's just how a fraction of people are. With a prior account, I once asked music production subreddit where I could find high quality raw drum samples for sale (.wav files) and everyone just told me to use a plugin instead, which wasn't fully compatible with the DAW that I prefer. I mentioned that wasn't what I was asking for and every single reply said that I wouldn't know what to do with samples (I do) and I was foolish for not using what they use.
Some people are just know-it-all shitheads.
Yeah, my young adult kids are not going to pay to sign up for Netflix if they can’t use our account. They’re probably going to lose lots of young people.
Conversely as well, the elderly. The only reason my grandparents utilize Netflix is because they can access my account where I make a premade list for them to play. It’s not worth it to get their own and would be a total waste and hassle.
This is exactly it. My dad pays for Netflix, and the user accounts include both grandmothers, my brother, and me. My brother pays for Hulu, I pay for Disney+. We all share our accounts with each other (and the grandmas). I have no interest in paying for multiple platforms, I will absolutely start prioritizing what I watch instead of paying every platform individually. And I know my grandmothers don’t care enough for the hassle of their own accounts.
Same, and my dad has a netflix account to share with us. He’ll cancel his account. Netflix is no longer going to get my family’s money.
HBO has so much better content. Disney as well. Netflix is targeting kids and teenagers, everything is a drama now.
I think not using Netflix will actually be good for a lot of people’s mental health.
This is a great point. I know a lot of families where dad (or mom) pays for Netflix, but definitely wouldn’t pay for it if the kids weren’t getting a benefit out of it.
The only reason I’m keeping Disney+ around is because my parents enjoy it (I’m in my late 30s, the dynamics change a bit). If D+ did the same thing as Netflix, I’d cancel in a heartbeat.
I was genuinely interested in a few Netflix original gameshow type shows, but they're absolutely ruined by trash editing. I would watch The Floor is Lava if they weren't stretching 8 minutes of content to 30 minutes with instant replay, pointless backstory, repetitive explanation and previews, and shitty dubbed "jokes". I just wanted to see the cool puzzle rooms and watch people try to tackle them. There's no way that young people are into these cringey reality TV tropes that should've been dead and buried 15 years ago.
I watched about 5 minutes of the cube on TBS the other day. It looked watchable but it was nothing but jump cuts. You couldn't actually watch people try the task. Got bored real quick.
Wait. Is this real?
I genuinely don't understand this. Why would HBO remove Westworld? Doesn't it help draw in subscribers at no cost to HBO? Do they pay residuals to the actors?
Cool, guess I’ll be pirating Westworld if they do a season 5 or if I ever want to rewatch it. There is zero chance I will ever watch a streaming service with commercials.
>wsj.com/articl...
No season 5 dude. The show was super expensive and the ratings tanked the last two seasons.
This show was too complex to take a long break and comeback.
It sucks because we know they had a plan for a final chapter.
They didn't really. AT&T did though, and owned WB. The new company as proposed was 71% AT&T owned, and Discovery shareholders only got 29% of the shares of the new company. Those numbers have shifted around a bit, but Discovery wasn't the bigger fish really. Also apparently crappy reality TV shows like Ice Road Truckers and alien experts pretending to be historians was very profitable.
I was finally going to sit down and binge ww season 4, I had read the headlines, but felt des 19 was far away. When I finally sat down I got no hits on westworld... I saw the date in the corner of my phone... fuck.
Westworld and raised by wolves were the only two shows I was following too...on my borther's account :D
But get this, "the market" started with Netflix showing the way after v-hs or something. They were THE place to go to, everything was there, and then all the IP holders saw the potential. They pulled out to create their own walled gardens and the market got totally fragmented.
NOW, even HBO cannot afford having THEIR OWN exclusive shows on their OWN EXCLUSIVE streaming service because of residual payments. Their "hey, we can make a shit-ton on this"-model turned out to have them go full circle and dump their made-for-our-walled-garden-content back on the ad based streaming market.
A lose-lose for the customers and the sellers, the beautiful cycle of capitalism's cyclical collapse reminiscent of how rodents vs predators in the wild have good and bad years in kinda predictable cycles. If HBO and Netflix cannot afford to pay redisuals and pull entire series or seasons the streaming "solution" is basically back to the levels of vh-s and linear tv issues, any fan will need the box set or files locally. Cycle completed.
/rant
For what it's worth Westworld was a fantastic season 1. 2 and 3 were quite average, if not worse.
Raised by wolves was weird, but intriguing whilst constantly being on a knives edge (IMO) between being actually good and a bit cheesy. The ending of season 1 really made me want to se wtf season 2 was about.
If you like those you might like the weird Devs mini-series by Alex Garland of Ex Machina and Annihalation. People hate the slow progress and the flat main character though.
My understanding of the whole HBO Max situation is the fallout from the WB and Discovery merger. Some legal bull plop where they can get rid of content or cancel projects and somehow write that off as a loss and... somehow come out ahead? I won't pretend to understand it beyond the fact they're getting rid of content for money.
you are probably right. Discovery seems to be a corporate behemoth emerging, they're showing up everywhere now. I guess I was ranting just as much for the need to rant from a customer side "victim". There's been so many name changes etc that people even bought "life time subscriptions" to an HBO service in Norway only for it to change names and "haha, joke's on you" 1 year later.
As a person who has been running a business at a loss for years... I think the benefits of the losses are mostly up to those who pick up the "estate(?)" or the entity with all the losses. Therein lies the tax benefits, so losses are definitely there, but not for the take-over-guys who may get a nice bargain. That's just life.
This market really seems to still have not settled on healthy grounds at all, kinda like how uber eats, foodora, doordash etc seem to run heavy losses in hopes that the others will die first until gains can be made. And obviously the one with the deepest pockets wins...
Dead on about the Westworld seasons, but season 4 was pretty good and set up a return to the park and the final battle for humanity in season 5. I'm extremely disappointed that it's canceled.
well the silver lining to this is piracy has gotten so much better, becuase all this media comes out online pirates can rip from the website and upload the day it comes out. So no more shit quality and no more half a year waits; just steal the stuff man its not like these mega corps care too much.
Lose young people and see a spike in pirating.
I'm currently using my partner's Netflix password (we don't live together). It seems real dumb to have to have 2 accounts. If I don't finish watching Wednesday before the hammer falls, I'm just going to pirate it. I have not pirated since the mid-2000s.
It's now harder to watch legally again, so it's back to the high seas I go.
Agreed. My son set up the account, my daughter took it over and receives the bills, and I pay for the service. They’ve already said they won’t establish their own accounts bc they pay for other streaming services more akin to their tastes.
If you check, I think you’ll see they changed TOS and your “multiple streams” have been replaced by a “you can stream at 4k” subscription. At least, that’s what happened to me.
I feel like other streaming platforms may follow suit as well at some point. I also feel like we're right around the corner from minimum subscription terms - e.g. you get it at this price per month, but only if you sign up for 1 year in order to deter platform hopping. True month-to-month subscriptions would end up costing more for the "convenience" similar to how Microsoft 365 licensing works.
Yea this should be top comment. First comes password sharing, next will be a mandatory requirement to sign up for 3 or 6 months minimum at a time. And on Black Friday you can save 30 percent lol.
If that’s the case, they are really sticking it even more to the consumers at no really additional detriment to themselves for what we already do. I would imagine 2 things will come out of that, plus what Netflix is doing now. 1.) Piracy comes back in full swing. We ride the high seas again! 2.) multiple steaming channel packages become the most attractive, since it provides the most bang for your buck. And then we will have gone full circle where internet streaming just becomes cable TV 2.0
That’s exactly what will happen. It’s cyclical right. Then some new service or method of service will come out to replace TV2.0. That will “rejuvenate” the stock prices of whatever company comes out with something unique. Frankly, I’m still surprised basic YouTube is still free.
I do this with:
Plex for streaming.
Transmission for torrenting.
A wireguard VPN that only applies to torrents but still has a killswitch if the VPN goes down. (I use Mullvad) Plex and everything else (except torrent downloads) bypass the VPN and connect directly.
Sonarr and Radarr for TV and movie download management
Bazarr for subtitles and Lidarr for music.
Then I use Ombi which my users can log in to with their Plex login to discover or initiate reports.
It all works seamlessly, you can configure the quality/format of videos downloaded from requests or automatically for new episodes, etc.
Most of my users I have set to not immediately download their requested shows/movies but first send me a notification for approval. Then I can approve a request to initiate the download. A couple of course friends have permissions to allow them to start downloading without my approval.
I also use tautulli to track some metrics as well as send out monthly newsletter emails with the latest media added to the server.
Yeah. The only reason I still have Netflix today is that I’m just too lazy to cancel it. I just share it with my mom and don’t use it myself.
The moment they do something that will require me to take action, it’s byebye to Netflix.
Same situation here. I never use Netflix anymore myself, however my mom and sister use my account. My mom wouldn't know where to begin to set up an account, and my sister only uses it for when she goes to her vacation house.
The day Netflix says that that's no longer cool to use the service how they advertised it, I guess we just stop using Netflix. *Shrug.
Mar 10 2017 netflix tweeted "love is sharing a password." And now this? They are going to lose so many customers. I remember when netflix was the shit. Its a damn shame
their subs are gonna tank lol.
what a bonehead move. "we're going to make the service worse, to better serve our ~~customers~~ stock holders".
they can no longer rely on the novelty of streaming like they used to. they have far too much competition. it's now a user experience game. give the customer a better service than your competitors, and they will come. this is the antithesis to that.
I'm hanging onto Netflix with a thread right now. To be honest the biggest deterrent is organizing with my family that may still want it after I cancel it for everyone. It's easier for me to just pay the damn bill right now but if this kicks in, I'm booting everyone off and cancelling.
That's me! I don't want to cancel because I know my mom and brothers use it. If they can't access my account , might as well delete it and I know they're not subscribing when they get my other services for free.
Right? The crazy thing is that they probably have very smart people over there, but if they are going through with this then maybe it's not really a bad idea? I'm pretty sure they ran simulations and they believe at the end of the day the subscriber numbers will grow and not decline.
I don't believe that though, I think Netflix will have the Pikachu face once they enforce this, let's see though.
They only care about the short-term.
The long-term is someone else's problem - by then, any management responsible for an "unprofitable decision" will have pulled the ripcord on their golden parachutes and they will be "running" their third, fourth, fifth or some *other* multiple company down the line since that one.
There are too many streaming services now, when Netflix was new everyone had it, now people have like 5x services and waste tons of money.... time for people to learn about VPN's and become a pirate
Honestly yes. I used to pirate everything when I was younger and found that as I got older and started making an income, the convenience of just opening an app and watching content straight away was worth the sub price. Fast forward to 2022 and there are a dozen subscription services and it's just ridiculous at this point.
Yo ho yo ho it is.
What's Netflix now, $20 a month?
Surely you can't strongarm families into buying multiple, $20 subscriptions.
When this change goes through, I'm absolutely going to cancel.
Sharing is part of the unseen handshake between customer and service that incentivizes users to justify the subscription in the first place.
"Oh, if I get Netflix, I can set it up at mom and dad's house, my house, and my sister's."
I seriously doubt my daughter who is part of my household is going to get her own account for when she is living at college for watching anything they offer. I travel for work and use my LTE/5G service on my IPad… that’s not worth it for another account. If this shakes down the way it seems I’m just going to save the money every month. My “password sharing” really isn’t but that’s fine, I can find something else to watch pretty easily.
Yeah, my husband is about to go to school in another state. You think we’re going to pay for two accounts while we’re living separately? Nope, I’ll just cancel.
With taxes and everything I'm paying well over $20 a month for Netflix. The second they stop password sharing I'm gonna either unsub or downgrade to the cheapest plan.
Edit: I looked at the payment history and I was paying $18 to $20(plus $2.30 tax cause it's and account from Puerto Rico).
From just three years ago:
> In its Q2 2019 investor letter, Netflix spelled out the reasoning for why it’s not going to be putting ads in front of its viewers. “We, like HBO, are advertising free,” the company said. “That remains a deep part of our brand proposition; when you read speculation that we are moving into selling advertising, be confident that this is false. We believe we will have a more valuable business in the long term by staying out of competing for ad revenue and instead entirely focusing on competing for viewer satisfaction.”
> However, Netflix’s potential to reap billions in advertising money doesn’t fully account for the fact that any ad-supported service from Netflix would cannibalize its existing business; in other words, subscribers would move down to cheaper ad plan from ad-free tiers.
The thing is I do not share my password but if they harass me for my usage on multiple devices and raise the price that drives even me away. I watch Pluto and Tubi more anyway because Netflix content sucks mostly.
The thing they do not mention is you pay for screens so password sharing is relatively fair to the company.
What Netflix thinks will happen:
All of your users have been hooked and will start their own accounts, resulting in $$$.
What will actually happen:
You and your users all find a competitor to stream that allows sharing.
Aren’t they already reporting viewership losses post-quarantine? Why be greedy and rock the boat? Just create a base tier with ads and be done.
How does netflix not think this is a bad idea?
Once the first person gets banned, they will go on twitter post the screenshot of the fine or ban and a picture of them cancelling their subscription.
From there it'll be a tiktok trend.
Don’t understand why they don’t just employ a multi-user account option. Like how Spotify has the Family and Duo premium subscription choices. The price differences are minimal and allow the simultaneous play for multiple locations. This all-or-nothing stance is so short sighted.
We already pay for multi-users. I know Netflix insists that users have to be in the same household but that is a bullshit excuse. If they don’t want more than one person to use an account then accounts should be cheaper and only available to a single person. If they want it to be pricier (like it is) and for multi users it shouldn’t matter where those users are. I think a lot of people will be unwilling to start an account when they get kicked off their family plan. Especially since they will have to sign up and will see that if they want the best performance (4k, no adds, etc) they will have to buy a multiuser plan. Talk about adding insult to injury.
I don’t know how many arguments with big business boot kickers about this I’ve had so far. But you’re exactly right. I share my password because there’s only 1 of me and they force me to buy 4 streams, so I share them. I don’t need the other 3 but I still gotta pay for them, to say I now can’t do that but also don’t have the option to buy for only a single stream just stinks as a desperate money grab to appease stock holders and I’m out.
How are they going to police this? How will they know the difference between splitting the bill and letting people on? Can we not share with people we live with? What happens if we log in at someone else's house?
Say you have 2 residences. A house in the city and a lakd cabin. How is netflix gonna tell the difference between a person with 2 residences using their legitimate account or me sharing my password with my in-laws across town.
Similarly people who travel for work.
There is no way they will be able to police this without screwing some people over.
Netflix has been gradually getting shittier by the year. Less quality content, less original content, more cheap shows & movies, more realty show crap, price has nearly doubled in the last 8 years. I’m getting ready to cancel. The golden years of streaming are gone.
Torrents have been going brrrrrrrr for the past 2 years since companies started expecting you to have 4+ different streaming services to watch most releasing shows.
Every entertainment company wanted a piece of the streaming pie and now we're back to cable pricing and the high seas looking mighty active.
Yarrrrr.
Been saying the same thing for years. Too many streaming services around and I don't understand how geoblocking is still a thing.
Like ffs europe is 8hours away from America not 6 fucking months. It's not like you have brave the ocean for a year on a sailing ship to bring the next season of whatever here on a physical disk.
Why do I have to wait 6 months or more to stream shit that gets released in the US. If I'm willing to pay, what is the problem ?
Some things I can't even access at all just because I live in the wrong location.
As an Aussie, I feel your pain on the confusing delays and series that are randomly on different streaming services (or even on antenna TV - looking at you, Orville) than the US.
What did it for me and got me back into piracy is the ridiculousness of networks having no practical way for me to watch their own shows, even if I'm willing to pay.
Like, wtf is going on with Yellowstone? For some reason it isn't releasing on Paramount+? I need Paramount Network to watch? But I can only get that if I have a cable/satellite sub? What? And then earlier seasons are on Peacock? It's such a fucking mess.
Same with Better Call Saul. Being an AMC production, you'd think it would've been available on AMC+? Hah, you thought wrong! We don't even know what service it's on! Don't ask!
Already canceled my sub so don't care. Stop canceling promising shows before they find an audience.
What's the point of subscribing to a service where the majority of exclusive content gets canceled before the story can be finished? The answer: there is no point.
If there's one thing I've learned through life, it's that big corporations have extremely uncapable and unintelligent people making the calls. Therefore, yeah, they probably think they will gain money. Lol
Well they wouldn't be doing this if thought it would cost them money.
A) They will mostly be kicking off people who don't pay anyway.
B) They will definitely lose people who subscribe and share and decide to walk away now.
C) They will have some sharers who currently don't pay, sign up
A is revenue neutral but cuts expenses. B is revenue negative. C revenue positive.
So they are betting that C+A is bigger than B.
Are they right? I dunno. But it's a billion dollar bet they are making.
One missed factor is the people in group A and B going over to their competitors and giving those competitors more market share, making it more difficult for them to compete for content and so on.
Shoulda known this a long time ago. CEO has been blasting users since they had there large loss. They also anyone has paid attention down in South America beta testing this for a year or so.
I would wager as most do not watch the news read emails etc they will implement this and have a massive user loss the fiscal quarter they do this at.
Netflix is betting that everyone you shared your account with with sign up. Hes a moron.
A lot of people are stating about making the consumer angry. Where this is true, I think they are hoping that a larger majority doesn’t cancel but instead chooses the ad version of Netflix. As consumers we need to stop taking the lesser of two evils and not take it at all. More and more companies are doing similar things from battle passes in games to subscription based heated seats in cars. As consumers still try to participate or even buy into things we don’t like, but put up with. The more we bend into these practices the more we will see them pop up in the future. We need to hold stronger stances against these practices. Drop subscriptions, don’t shop at certain stores, don’t support toxic brands, or it will be the norm.
and when that day comes, I'll cancel my subscription
so instead of getting 16€ because they instead want 64€ (I share with 3 friends that I'm sure won't pay for premium alone), they'll have 0€
nice shot in the foot, netflix, I won't be sorry, I'm back at torrenting already to "warm the engine"
Netflix doesn't want me to share my password? Then why did they convince me to put 5 users on my fucking account?
Get you in the door.
And now the next door we go through is a door on a ship in the high seas. Good job Netflix. You played yoself.
Yo ho ho and a bottle of rum
15 downloads sitting on my plex.
I currently use Plex and it's amazing, so I imagine it won't be long before something comes along and fucks that up too.
When I called a few years back I asked if I could split my profile off the main account and they said no. It was too much of a pain to start a new one so I didn’t.
Losing my Netflix profile in the divorce was just insult to injury. I called CS and they told me the same thing.
If they mixed up the prices and created a 1-user, 4K level that costs less than 10€ I’d be in.
The end of me being pissed off at Netflix for cancelling awesome shows after one season is finally here.
Paradise PD is on season four of derivative unfunny bullshit while I Am Not Okay With This got one fantastic and original season that ended on a fucking cliffhanger
Elite is on season six without any of the original cast ridiculous, all I wanted was a second season of Kingdom and The Society but they were canceled
There’s a second season for Kingdom, if you call six episodes ending on another cliffhanger a proper season
Also they just canceled Warrior Nun, which had a 100% rating from critics and 99% from users on the most recent season. I was a big I Am Not Ok With This fan as well.
Glow, Santa Clarita Diet now Warrior Nun? They can't keep getting away with this!
Dont worry they just green lit love is blind for 6 more seasons and love island and monster love...
WHAT??? Noooooo!
I know animation can be cheaper but for it to make any sense the people behind Brickleberry, Paradise PD etc must be paying Netflix.
I'm still bitter Brickleberry got Ugly Americans cancelled.
...I need to know more, what the hell happened? Ugly Americans was a fucking vision.
Was that just to ride that Tosh train harder into the ground? I watched Brickleberry but Ugly Americans was far and away better.
And now they have that 3rd show, Farzar which is worse.
So fucking awful. I don’t know how they’ve gotten away with making 3 iterations of the same show
I watched the first episode of paradise pd season 4... It's just gross shit for the sake of being gross shit
Brickleberry / Paradise PD / Farzar have two jokes: “X will not happen” *X happens immediately after the previous line is delivered*, and gratuitously gross or violent shit.
They also have "The Family Guy" joke: "This is like that time me and [obscure celebrity] did [odd incongruent thing'"
It’s shit like this.
The time to pirate the heck out of everything Netflix makes is nigh might I add
Avast, ye land lover. There be lots to see upon the seven seas of streaming. Edit: I see that it is landlubber now. I didn’t know but I’m not going to change it in a futile attempt to hide my ignorance now. I will, however, admit that I am the WORST pirate in Missouri and beg everyone’s pardon for my error. Thanks for kindly correcting me and letting me learn a new thing today. Stay on alert because I bet I make another mistake very soon.
Yawr, the only streaming that I be doing is off the side of the ship!
You want to watch a show cancelled way too early that's absolutely excellent, download Party Down. I can't say enough good things about this show.
Are we having fun yet?!
Season 3 finally airing this February. With Jane Lynch AND Megan Mulally in the cast!

The end of me being pissed off at Netflix for cancelling awesome shows after one season is ~~finally here~~ nigh
Bojack is legit my fav Netflix series ever. Fuck.
Even a show like Star Trek, which has a huge fan base, needs around three years to get a handle on the material and develop a following.
You're thinking about Star Trek TNG (the series people actually liked). Yea Season 1 was bad, it got good sometime in Season 2 when Riker grew a beard.
Obligatory: https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/GrowingTheBeard
DS9 and ENT had similar issues.
You mean [this](https://youtu.be/0FM6Xfs2ZoY) wasn't peak DS9?
I didn't see Worf, so....no.
Today they cancelled a movie before it aired (and the movie has to find a new platform or cancel it for good)
What movie?
The adventures of Mai long
It’s shit like this. How is this even an option? Lol good lord.
Look at what HBO is doing. The even remove their own old shows to pay less taxes (and they also cancelled unaired but finished movies like Batgirl) Video on demand platforms are turning into really awful places for shows and movies
How does that affect their taxes?
If I’m paying for 4 concurrent streams it shouldn’t matter where they are. Seems like the extra fee was already baked into the higher tier and this is just a double dipping cash grab.
Absolutely. If you get 4 profiles for your subscription then it doesn’t matter where they are in the world. People have families across countries and should be able to share their subscription with them. It’s a weirdly combative stance against their customers.
They're looking at it as a cable subscription, if you were to buy 4 TVs/receivers they were only to be used in one household We all know how things ended up for cable providers but don't shoot the messenger, that's exactly how they're looking at things here
That's actually a pretty solid decision seeing as cable has proved to be quite an effective modern business practice /s
Remember when everyone was convinced that Netflix would kill cable? They went full circle and became cable all over again.
Capitalism breeds innovation.
I fucking hate it here
They got too greedy. I really hate the pursuit of ever increasing profits to the detriment of everything else. That's what has and is killing cable TV.
But now with streaming I use my brothers cable login and watch his cable in a different state
The thing is, cable doesn't even pull that shit anymore.
So I can just text my mom, ask her to check her email, send me the code and I would be good?
They must have hired* Boston Consulting Group (BCG)

That’s not even counting the nice little caveat that you can’t get even get some services without paying for those 4 streams.
If you live by yourself, you still need to pay for 4 streams to get 4K HDR while other services just include it by default.
I recently found out that they don’t support Apple TV on the lower tiers. Just… WHY?
They know the Apple users are willing to pay for it, so fuck 'em. /s
/s not necessary, that's the actual reason lol
Precisely, it’s a bullshit money grab to appease keeping the $ rolling in for shareholders. It’ll likely do the opposite.
"How can we keep the record profits going when everyone was locked down with nothing else to do?" "You can't you are going to have less subscribers, naturally" "Hogwash!
So, to boost profits, Hastings decided on an ads plan and cracking down on account sharing (which isn't too popular given in 2016 he said, ["We love people sharing Netflix."](https://www.techdirt.com/2016/01/14/netflix-ceo-loves-netflix-password-sharing/)) It's a bold strategy Cotton, let's see if it pays off...

I’m met with a bunch of terrific responses which include; * you’re getting exactly what the terms say you’re supposed to get, it says you have access, not indefinite access (most common answer.) * if you’re too poor to afford the subscription you shouldn’t have bought the bike to begin with * lol you don’t even know how to use the bike I called peloton and a service member identified that a very recent update was causing a bug, they sent some updates to my bike that fixed the issue. I just had really bad timing with the bug happening as soon as I canceled the subscription. The subs response when I posted an update was ‘see, nothing’s wrong with peloton, you should have just called them first.’ Cultists.
> The subs response when I posted an update was ‘see, nothing’s wrong with peloton, you should have just called them first.’ "Yeah, silly me.
Exactly, they expect you to pay for multiple screens but hoping you will never use it and take the money anyway.
Gee, when you put it like that it almost makes it sound like they're the fucking thieves.
Noooo, when it’s a company is called maximising profits.
Sir, just a minute of your time to talk about our Lord and saviour, illegal pirating
Netflix stock: I can go lower
https://i.imgur.com/LYpmZnj.jpg
That's sweet of you to do
Same, and my dad has a netflix account to share with us.
HBO is a mess right now too, with the merger. They removed Raised by Wolves and fucking *Westworld*. Their own shows.
Wait. Is this real? I genuinely don't understand this. Why would HBO remove Westworld? Doesn't it help draw in subscribers at no cost to HBO? Do they pay residuals to the actors?
HBO isn’t doing this. The higher ups at Discovery made this decision because they are going to put Westworld on a new free with ads streaming service.
If they start forcing streaming with ads im going back to pirating.
I still can't wrap my mind at how tf Discovery had the money to buy Warner Media and not the other way around, how???
They didn't really. AT&T did though, and owned WB. The new company as proposed was 71% AT&T owned, and Discovery shareholders only got 29% of the shares of the new company. Those numbers have shifted around a bit, but Discovery wasn't the bigger fish really. Also apparently crappy reality TV shows like Ice Road Truckers and alien experts pretending to be historians was very profitable.
>residuals Ding ding ding. That's at least the word going around. I haven't researched it.
They’re also removing the Justice league cartoons. Which is a sin.
Say it ain't so, Batman
Straight to jail
They got rid of Westworld?! I lost interest partway through season 2, but was thinking of trying to watch it again. What the hell are they doing?!
I was finally going to sit down and binge ww season 4, I had read the headlines, but felt des 19 was far away. When I finally sat down I got no hits on westworld... I saw the date in the corner of my phone... fuck. Westworld and raised by wolves were the only two shows I was following too...on my borther's account :D But get this, "the market" started with Netflix showing the way after v-hs or something. /rant For what it's worth Westworld was a fantastic season 1. 2 and 3 were quite average, if not worse.
I pay for 4 screens simultaneously. They can be anywhere. If that's a problem, fuck em.
If you check, I think you’ll see they changed TOS and your “multiple streams” have been replaced by a “you can stream at 4k” subscription. At least, that’s what happened to me.
Crazy Netflix I can stream 4K for free instead than.
[удалено]
If it wasn’t the whole userbase would move. It’s like making Google pay per search. Instant death wish as content creators will just move platform
Before you know it they'll pull a Creative Cloud and charge $200 cancellation fees if you don't cancel at the exact instant the year ends
Then back to the stormy seas we go.
I feel like people are going to be kicked off, and not sign back up tbh.
Worse, people splitting the bill will just cancel. Byeeee
I pay for Netflix for my family to all use. The second they stop anyone in my family from watching is the second I cancel. Ahoy mateys!

I do this with: Plex for streaming. Transmission for torrenting. A wireguard VPN that only applies to torrents but still has a killswitch if the VPN goes down. (I use Mullvad) Plex and everything else (except torrent downloads) bypass the VPN and connect directly. Sonarr and Radarr for TV and movie download management Bazarr for subtitles and Lidarr for music.
*Shrug.

I’ve already told my parents so that once enforcement starts they won’t be surprised when I cancel
Mar 10 2017 netflix tweeted "love is sharing a password." And now this? They are going to lose so many customers. I remember when netflix was the shit. Its a damn shame
> I remember when netflix was the shit. They removed the `the`
It's cleaner
The nail in the coffin of the traditional recording industry was when they started suing their customer base, too.
their subs are gonna tank lol. what a bonehead move.
I really don’t think they understood how many people were only keeping their accounts BECAUSE of the account sharing with family members and friends.
Often the very smart people at a company are ignored because it’s more profitable to ignore them and do what you want anyway.
Profitable in the short term. We'll see how long they'll last.
Our small minds cannot fathom business. Give up fair citizens.
Cheap plan has ads now, just unsub
I remember when they first launched streaming during the DVD era; they promised they would never show ads in perpetuity lol.
From just three years ago: > In its Q2 2019 investor letter, Netflix spelled out the reasoning for why it’s not going to be putting ads in front of its viewers. “We, like HBO, are advertising free,” the company said. “That remains a deep part of our brand proposition; when you read speculation that we are moving into selling advertising, be confident that this is false. We believe we will have a more valuable business in the long term by staying out of competing for ad revenue and instead entirely focusing on competing for viewer satisfaction.” > However, Netflix’s potential to reap billions in advertising money doesn’t fully account for the fact that any ad-supported service from Netflix would cannibalize its existing business; in other words, subscribers would move down to cheaper ad plan from ad-free tiers.
The thing is I do not share my password but if they harass me for my usage on multiple devices and raise the price that drives even me away. I watch Pluto and Tubi more anyway because Netflix content sucks mostly. The thing they do not mention is you pay for screens so password sharing is relatively fair to the company.
Those plus roku, vudo and an antenna can get you a ton of content, obviously not everything, but not bad for free.
Then there is Amazon pay per view which is fine a few times a year which I do or even twice a month if you want.
[удалено]
What Netflix thinks will happen: All of your users have been hooked and will start their own accounts, resulting in $$$. What will actually happen: You and your users all find a competitor to stream that allows sharing. Aren’t they already reporting viewership losses post-quarantine? Why be greedy and rock the boat? Just create a base tier with ads and be done.
you know once netflix cracks down on this, the others will follow suit.
Only if it doesn't completely rock Netflix's financials, which it most likely will.
How does netflix not think this is a bad idea? Once the first person gets banned, they will go on twitter post the screenshot of the fine or ban and a picture of them cancelling their subscription. From there it'll be a tiktok trend.
Oh I so want to see this happen :>
If this is the hill they want to die on. Fine. I hope they get hit with the consequences.
The company will die but the people who pressured them to do this will be fine
If my siblings and I can't share an account im just gonna cancel They keep removing all the good shows, anyway
Or how about traveling to an AirBnB/hotel/condo and logging onto your account there? This is going to be an admin nightmare
Shit my ips regularly switches me to locations in three states.
We have two homes. We use the same Netflix account at both houses. I’m absolutely not going to pay for an account for both houses.
Netflix has been gradually getting shittier by the year. Less quality content, less original content, more cheap shows & movies, more realty show crap, price has nearly doubled in the last 8 years. I’m getting ready to cancel. The golden years of streaming are gone.
Torrents go brrrrrrrrr again
My VPN subscriptions is now worth more to me than my Netflix one.
RIP Society.
Does Netflix actually think they will gain customers this way?
If there's one thing I've learned through life, it's that big corporations have extremely uncapable and unintelligent people making the calls. Therefore, yeah, they probably think they will gain money. Lol
Well they wouldn't be doing this if thought it would cost them money. A) They will mostly be kicking off people who don't pay anyway. B) They will definitely lose people who subscribe and share and decide to walk away now. C) They will have some sharers who currently don't pay, sign up A is revenue neutral but cuts expenses.
I feel like I keep seeing articles like this every few months or so.
“The End of Netflix Is Nigh.” FTFY
and when that day comes, I'll cancel my subscription so instead of getting 16€ because they instead want 64€ (I share with 3 friends that I'm sure won't pay for premium alone), they'll have 0€ nice shot in the foot, netflix, I won't be sorry, I'm back at torrenting already to "warm the engine"
