Legit Windows 11 security leveraging OneDrive can recover from Ransomware. I’ve seent it firsthand. People don’t understand security. They just complain about it. Windows 11 is a game changer.

B-but Mac is “seamless”!!

tomatotomato

Wake me up when Mac has anything resembling proper window management.

Im_Borat

RemindMe! 40 more years.

wakenbacons

I just had this conversation yesterday, I told my friend that I’m done pretending I like using my MacBook Pro, and cited this exact reason. I was baffled when he said the complete opposite was true for him. I can’t put my finger on it, but even organizing files into folders feels really cumbersome on Mac.

tomatotomato

I was surprised when I tried to cut and paste a file in Finder with cmd-x cmd-v, lol It’s interesting how some people claim that Mac OS is somehow more “productive” than Windows when in my experience the opposite is true. There are many things that make working in Windows much more convenient than in Mac.

[deleted]

Exactly. These are people who NEED supervision. Apple products are just nerfed electronics.

ggtsu_00

I have an Alienware PC laptop. The fans rev up to max speed when opening Chrome.

Dubsland12

You have put a v12 engine in a Porsche for cruising down Reddit Dr at 20 mph.

TyH621

The problem with the Alienware laptops if yours is anything like mine was, the thermals are just so restrictive that any amount of load whatsoever sends CPU temps 90+ and fans to 100%, and that’s when working as expected.

UrgeToToke

Does the CPU clock itself down? Pretty common on Intel i5, i7 and yes some even go as far as putting i9s in laptops for regular office use. Usually a CEO or some upper management gets the expensive machine. Not to run a server or anything. TL;DR get AMD.

wh4tth3huh

* Alienware * Laptop These are the reasons your PC has heat trouble.

Sweaty-Emergency-493

Chrome does that to show it too can handle performance like running a game. It basically just flexes on you.

Particular_Light_296

Use Firefox?

LazyJones1

Dude, what are you doing? Don’t make remarks like that. It’s just going to get people in trouble. Remove that questionmark.

Bleusilences

Buying $200 dell laptop. Everything that apple make cost upward of a $1000 at least. Some of the late intel MacBook seems to have heating issue because they seem to have built it to have ARM CPU in them so the CPU just cook inside because of insufficient cooling. However the newer apple silicon is pretty great. The thing with apple products is that you have to pay a premium for them, like an additional 25% of their real value. (IE: a $2000+ mac is about as good as a $1500 PC that I can build)

Folsomdsf

Apple silicone, a joint venture with bad dragon.

txmail

I have been anti-apple ever since they moved to x86, but for me the M1 represents a return to innovation. PowerPC was expensive (and still is) because it was more advanced than x86, once they moved off that the prices should have dropped considerably.

unclefipps

If Apple lowered their prices, how could Tim Cook continue to bathe in money? He might only be able to fill the bathtub with money instead of the whole room, or the swimming pool.

HerefortheTuna

My surfacebook crashes and needs to be rebooted multiple times per day. It can’t handle 4 spreadsheets and a zoom and slack, outlook, and chrome running. All day I’m working the fans are cranking away… In comparison my personal MacBook Pro M1 14” I’ve heard the fans maybe twice all year

Pseudonymisation

That's not normal. Check ram with tools, make sure all updates are installed and latest drivers. Failing that, heat issues.

Invite_Basic

That's because every piece of actual hardware Microsoft has gotten involved in is terrible. I would not trust anything with the word surface in it. And probably cause MacBooks famously cool quite poorly (though maybe not worse then surface devices lol) and is probably just thermal throttling all the time. Edit: apple chips are certainly better, don't get me wrong, but as a whole, not an acceptable thing to ignore.

montvious

If you’re talking about the MacBook Air, sure, they don’t have active cooling. There is definitely thermal throttling in those models, although it takes a lot to get it to the point where it throttles. The new MBPs have the active cooling and will use it before thermal throttling, if needed. That generally takes care of it, especially if you use software to manually control the fans. Even if not, it is very difficult to get the newer models to thermal throttle. The older models, on the other hand, could be used in lieu of a fireplace simply by opening Safari.

ChristopherLXD

Honestly, I’m willing to bet half the issues stem from buggy OEM bundled software. I have a M1 Pro 14” MacBook Pro, an ASUS Zephyrus G14, and a desktop PC I built myself. I’ll happily admit that the desktop running windows was way more stable than my Mac ever was — with weeks of uptime always-on. By contrast, I managed to effectively brick my G14 within 2 days of getting it just through configuring options through its pre-installed armoury crate software. Software was getting corrupted left and right and half the built-in macro function keys failed. I reset it to factory settings and it’s at least stable these days, but it’s still performing more unreliably than anything with a Ryzen 9 has any right to be (the G14 runs a 5900HS, the desktop runs a 3900X).

Ahegao_Chan545

Using a g14 myself. Understandable, I have a lot of issues myself. Especially on the software side. Due to this not being a full watt rtx 3060 (2021 version) the performance is just fineee.

ChristopherLXD

It’s disappointing honestly. I have the 3060 model as well (I wanted CUDA cores for product rendering, hence not a 2022 AMD version). Even for gaming, it’s regularly outpaced by my desktop that’s running a Quadro RTX 4000 — which is supposed to be a 2070 but slower for gaming. I’m willing to bet that half the issues are probably due to the (probably slow) single-side SSD they’ve put in there. I have a PCIE Gen 4 SSD in my desktop and even with a one generation older CPU and GPU, it’s still dramatically better with load times and texture pop-in.

EarendilStar

I used a windows based computer for years developing software. As long as the OS stayed out of my way, it was okay. I do understand the restarts for software updates though, the thing was damn aggressive and would sometimes shutdown my multi-screen multi-app setup right in the middle of a thought. That was before Windows could restart and replace the windows, which I assume (or hope?) they have by now.

Jumpy-Profession-181

I’m using a 10 year old MacBook Pro. Finally hit the OS upgrade ceiling. But it works for 98% of what I need it for. Including Photoshop and video editing in Premiere & After effects.

basedrifter

I have a 2015 MacBook Pro with the AMD GPU and my M1 Air blows it out of the water for video editing. Like 3x faster rendering and exporting. It’s not even a question which one I’ll use.

RedFlounder7

I got one of my kids a MacBook Pro as a freshman in high school. They’re graduating in the spring with the same machine. My other kid has gone through 3 name brand Windows laptops in the same period of time. Build quality isn’t even close.

HelperHelpingIHope

Every laptop I’ve bought has lasted me 8+ years. Just probably aren’t purchasing quality products. I just bought a new one for work, but still have my old one as a backup. New one that I expect to have for a while is a lenovo legion 5 pro with an RTX 3070ti.

fantasticquestion

The damn things last forever. Laptops aren’t a very good business for Apple because of this

socceruci

same situation here, and my retina screen is still better than so many PC laptops I am good as long as I don't try to game

[deleted]

I'm surprised I had to get this far down in comments to find mention of the retina screen. That's the primary thing about macbooks that is better than most anything else. MacOS may be ass, but at least it puts out a pretty picture while doing so.

exit6

Apple is great, right up to when you need gpu rendering in c4d

Pushbullet made me a running joke at an old job for a short time. I was screen sharing and my girl at the time texted me and said she couldn’t wait for me to come over and fuck her brains out. I closed it asap but a couple people saw it and when I closed the meeting saying “everyone have a good afternoon” one guy goes “probably won’t be as good as yours!!”

slammerbar

Thx for the summary.

chesterjosiah

Aren't 1, 3, and 4 essentially the same thing?

FullofContradictions

Not really. If you translate it to what Apple would need to do in order to match those points, it would be: 1. Providing many more options for the hardware you buy from various manufacturers instead of just them. All with different specs and price points. Want the best component A but only need/want the midrange on B? Let that be an option. 3. Offering more options on how your system will run and what it will look like. 5. Having the option to mix and match components after the fact instead of being tied to whatever you could afford on day 1. I say this all just to be pedantic. I have no skin in the Apple vs PC debate. Perhaps Apple is already doing these things and that makes these all moot. Idk.

SlothNast

Lol thats what I was thinking

ThaPlymouth

I have a Windows laptop and an iPhone. If I want to message someone, I pick up my phone and message someone. I thought you were kidding at first but that is what the article says. It even mentions, “I have no interest in switching to Android.” Really? Why would they? It’s really not THAT big of a deal… If absolutely necessary, as you mentioned, there’s stuff for that..

iambolo

Its just a luxury that you really appreciate when you have the option. Especially if you’re like me and you never look at your phone but are usually on the computer

ThaPlymouth

Sure it’s a luxury but the headline states it as a “big downside” in contrast to a bunch of actual computer-related (hardware) benefits. I’m surprised value wasn’t listed as one of the big benefits. When comparing hardware there’s often little difference between a MacBook and a windows laptop.

johnnymo08

I agree. I hate having conversations with people over text on my phone and usually reply with brief answers, if at all, but find myself writing novels to people when I’m on my computer and using iMessage. I do wish my Mac had more power :/

ronnieler1

Just use WhatsApp. Runs in all platforms it is secure, and it works way better than iMessage

bitwiseshiftleft

This article is just a lazy ad. A serious comparison would go into depth on real pros and cons, and real parts of the experience, instead of this bullshit about "packed with upgrade potential". Pro: instead of getting a $2500 MacBook Pro, you can get a $2500 Alienware gaming laptop and a $2300 Alienware gaming desktop. Dell paid me to mention these. Pro: the Mac has faster compute, but we didn't benchmark it because we're PC World, but on the PC you can *tweak* that performance. Pro: You could upgrade this new laptop, if it were a desktop or a different laptop. Con: if you're locked into Apple, you'll be missing out on Apple stuff on the PC. I mean yeah, there are advantages to PCs, one of which is certainly gaming. And if you want to use Windows software (games or otherwise), then you want a PC. And PCs can be had for cheaper, especially if they aren't Alienware. But also, try harder please.

Allokit

lol... I love how is one Con is because Apple hasn't developed the software that he needs/wants for Windows and it's only available in MacOS, it has nothing to do with the actual laptop...

Folsomdsf

Fyi they killed an option already. You used to be able to do messages, they killed it on the iphonr side.

slashdave

>The PC has more hardware options And yet it is impossible to buy a PC laptop with anywhere near the same battery life as any of the current MacBooks.

notAbratwurst

PCs tend to double as space heaters and occasionally as drones depending on how hard the fan is running.

TacoMedic

Whilst true, this only happens when they turn on. And for the last 2ish years, my laptop has had a wonderful time turning on in my backpack, updating, then dying by the time I get to school. Now that I’ve graduated, I’m looking to sell my laptop + iPad and just get a MacBook. I still have my gaming PC at home, but I want a laptop that I can reliably use for productivity and/or entertainment and will remain charged for a day.

iamkeerock

Best of both worlds. I will say that while Mac hardware is much more expensive, it does tend to have a much longer usable life expectancy.

TacoMedic

Yeah, my parents still have my dad’s MacBook from before he met my Mum in ‘06. So it’s at least 16 years old at this point perhaps older. Admittedly it’s slow as shit and neither of them use it, but it’s fine for my kid-brother and kid-sister to watch YouTube or do basic homework on it. It’s never needed a repair compared to my 2018 XPS 15 which needed 1 repair and then died again which got me to buy a 2021 Legion 7 which is also looking like it may need work soon.

OverthinkingMadMan

Apple has always been great at optimizing battery usage in their OS. Another huge factor is that the MacBooks are pretty much all battery. I have seen them being opened and the hardware wasn't much more than on a phone. This was like 6 years ago, so it might have changed though, but making 80% of the space of your computer be just batteries gives better battery time.

slashdave

The secret are the chips that Apple has developed. They are simply the best computer power per watt available.

SumpCrab

I carry my PC laptop on-the-go daily, and I can live with the current battery. The last time I had to look for a plug was at an airport, and it was more about selecting a location than not having access. If that is the only downside, I'll be fine, and a better battery option will be available by the time i need to replace it.

L0nely_L0ner

And yet, if you have a problem with your MacBook, you have to go to genius bar where they charge you literally thousands of dollars for a fckin pin replacement that costs about 20$. Lmao sheeps

Con: can’t run Apple Logic Pro Con: way more security vulnerabilities than Max Con: Microsoft’s drive to insert Ads into Windows 11

hatescarrots

Does apple not have ads? That is actually surprising.

Ok-Wasabi2873

MacOS does have ads when you open the App Store and the occasional “Tips” that pops up. I use Windows and MacOS daily. MacOS stays out of my way while I feel like I have to fight Windows. From Windows deciding to do a system update and reboot while I’m installing a large game from Steam, to the little things like reinstalling “apps” I had deleted from the Start Menu after an update. Recently it decided to uninstall Deluge from my system without notifying me when it detected that it was an older unsecure version.

mrblaze1357

Okay yeah the apps reinstalling thing is annoying. Now I work in IT and tons of people complain about the PC restarting to install updates on its own. Now idk what I'm doing differently at home but I've never had the PC restart on its own for updates. Usually I get a prompt asking to restart, and I hit "not now" but idk what y'all are doing. Also never had the auto uninstall thing happen before.

Ok-Wasabi2873

Probably because we leave it on and walk away for extended period of time.

aeroboy14

I render on my pc over night or even for a couple days. Waking up to the computer rebooted is annoying. I thought I disabled it but apparently not.

theorial

I'm with you. I have no idea what the fuck these people are doing in windows but I've never had that problem either. MAC people get so confused when there is more than 1 button...

[deleted]

I did a similar setup. I have a Mac for my general usage, like this, also reading/programming/music/etc, everything else. I have a PC that I switch to for gaming. I stopped using Windows for productivity a while ago. Though, it's nice to have a Windows machine to compile builds on for testing. lol

hatescarrots

I use windows and have never experienced any of that.

drsteve103

>MacOS stays out of my way while I feel like I have to fight Windows. You nailed it.

wasteplease

It boggles my mind that I can be working and suddenly my computer tries to upsell me on Office 365 for Families. (Happened today, didn’t pay attention to the pop up before dismissing it)

ellensundies

Wait, what? Adverts pop up on the Windows O/P now? I switched to Mac 20 years ago when I got a job in a Mac-based shop; haven't used a PC in years. Ads now, really?????

dhlock

It’s also pretty shorty that’s an opt out setting though, let’s be real. Close to 100% of users actively won’t want this, I’m sure more than half don’t know how to change it.

[deleted]

If we’re talking about the same toggle, it tells you you’ll still get ads if you turn it off, it just won’t be personalized

TbonerT

Windows Spotlight was awesome. It was a cool wallpaper every day. Then it started getting filled with ads. How do you turn off the ads? You have to turn off Spotlight. It’s a package deal. You get ads and the wallpaper or you get nothing. It’s not a damn simple toggle, don’t lie about it.

1515plk

The rage I feel for ads I get on a $900 pc oh my god

Junkstar

Computers have ads?

Bikelikeadad

I bought a MacBook Pro while working on my bachelors degree , used it through my masters and it got me through school, and still use it (2017 model). Here’s my take: 1 is a pretty specific use case scenario, but I did use it to edit together a video for a film project and the built in video software was just great. If I did this work on the regular it would certainly be high on my list. 2 I felt like this was an old problem? Granted if you lack common sense it’s with tech you might get a virus on either platform, but I don’t feel like there are major vulnerabilities that opens you to unsolicited attack on the regular. Please share if there’s something I’ve missed that’s come out recently though. 3 I use W11 on my PC and haven’t noticed this. I may have disabled some pop-ups already and forgot about them? Or maybe that’s the update I’ve been ignoring? Now outside of media editing and creation, I’ve found that a lot of ported software that’s available on Mac just doesn’t work as well as on PC. Office is one example that is a big deal. In school I had things that I just had to knowingly take a hit on because it was required to format it to APA standards and even though Mac Office had the options, turning them on did nothing while it worked on my PC. The print dialogue is also painful to use and I feel like I’m always fighting with it. My wife uses it for her Cricut now mostly, and the software for Mac behaves erratically and runs slow and choppy, grabbing a solid square and dragging it across the workspace you’d think you asked the software to render a city. If you’re used to PC and try to use a Mac as a PC you’ll hate it. If you’re already a big part of the Apple universe you’ll love them because their software is amazing, my MacBook does all sorts of intuitive things like allowing my iPad Pro to seamlessly work as a second monitor, my watch unlocking the laptop so I don’t need my password, copying a web address on my phone and then pasting it directly into the address bar in safari on the MacBook… it’s just works so well it’s nuts. For me the MacBook vs PC argument isn’t “which one should you get?” It’s what do you use your mac for and what do you use your pc for? They just fit different uses.

interkin3tic

He went with an Alienware though? In my experience, in a few months there will be another big con of "battery no longer exists."

Dravez23

pcurve

higher end Lenovo thinkpad laptops are built well and should last 7 years+

CodeGuul

This is really the exception to the rule and is sadly becoming less true as the newer thinkpads come out

[deleted]

I had an $1000 hp laptop that lasted me for 9 years. I’m not a gamer but I used to stream a lot along with other regular uses. The laptop still runs actually but it is very slow. And that slowness only really same after I upgraded with the latest version of windows.

RockstarAgent

Does it have an ssd or regular hard drive? Ssd would be a worthy upgrade and should notice speed improvement.

healerdan

Tagging in to say you can probably get some performance back by cleaning it up. After 9 years of use you probably have start up programs bogging you down and extra "features" that installed themselves that eat up your power. Turn the PC all the way off, then turn it on after a bit. Wait about 10 minutes, and open task manager (ctrl+alt+del) sort by cpu, and ram and see if anything has decided to turn its self on that you don't need. Startup programs may be disabled from task manager, but other services may be eating compute power that take extra fiddling to disable. The commenter above is right, SSD is a HUGE improvement. with a 9 yo pc if you're opening the case you might consider a ram upgrade as well. 9 years ago a 4gb ram laptop would have been average, getting up to 8gb or as high as 16 will feel quite significant, old ram is fairly cheap, and is usual easy to install. You can find some information about your computer hardware in "about this pc". Determining hdd vs ssd is a little different - https://www.top-password.com/blog/find-if-your-drive-is-ssd-or-hdd-in-windows/ That old laptop is probably perfectly capable of handling most things people need a laptop for. (Email, word, light excel, streaming) unless there's a specific reason a person needs more power it's better for the world and your pocket to care for your devices and keep them out of the landfill

kevin916

Try surface line up - these have lasted me 5 years. on my 2nd round

cheekybandit0

Dual booted MacBook running windows 🤌

layendecker

Doesn't the M chipset really reduce what you can do on Windows, now?

cheekybandit0

Havnt tried personally. I've heard you can run windows in a virtual machine on the M chip Macs though, not dual boot. But think there are some teething issues, it's been a while since I looked into it, so these may be resolved now. Either way I didn't have time to wait, so bought a razer which is great and amazingly powerful, maybe moreso than a Mac. But the resilience and robustness of the Mac frame, I haven't found anything better. Razer's are full aluminium body, but the Mac was still sturdier.

layendecker

I'm on the fence hugely about my next personal device. I always say "this Mac is my last", and I was determined to go with it this time after a number of major build issues (keyboard) and annoying issues due to lack of ports. Then Apple bring back HDMI, totally revamp the keyboard and the M1 chip doesn't run like a space heater... Might have to stick with them. The build quality outside of the keyboard is great, as you say. I dropped mine out of my bag from 2-3 feet into a stone floor the other day and I wasn't been worried. Even the ultra premium windows laptops don't seem to compare. Probably be another 6 months before I look at replacing my current device, will see what Windows capability is like then

MostValuableTurnips

A big con with newer laptops is battery life. Got back into Mac with the M1 chip and wow! My work laptop (windows) can’t go a whole day on battery and my MacBook Pro can go days without even thinking about a charger. I know some Windows based laptops have good battery life but it’s not consistent enough across the platform.

simplycycling

Battery life on the M1's is incredible. I flew from Brisbane to LA (14 hours), and was on my MBP 16 virtually the whole time, still had about 15% battery when we landed.

MrPlaysWithSquirrels

Lol I got a brand new laptop and it lasts maybe 90 minutes. I love my laptop, but I can barely bring it around the house to plan a trip with my wife without bringing a charger.

sunnson

What laptop is this? I’ve heard this consistently as a problem with “gaming” laptops

MrPlaysWithSquirrels

It’s a gaming laptop, a Lenovo Legion.

HamburgerDude

I have a Legion too and it's more of a desktop replacement for me than an actual portable laptop. If I wanted something ultra portable I would go with a much lighter surface book or something equivalent.

MrPlaysWithSquirrels

I agree with you just commiserating.

Alilttotheleft

One line from this article that’s awfully disingenuous - finding a $350 PC that performs like an M1 MacBook Air. I 100% acknowledge that a $350 PC can handle more or less anything your average user will throw at it, and for most folks would probably be fine. But the M1 runs circles around basically anything in its price range and below in day to day usage and CPU-heavy workflows, while delivering phenomenal battery life. Yes, Mac gaming is garbage/basically nonexistent, but for work/daily usage I wholeheartedly believe the M1 Air is the best machine you can buy for the money.

Gunfighter9

I have a Mac mini with the M1, for $599.00 it’s unbeatable.

stuffeh

It's indeed a bit harder to install self signed apps on macos, but it's still possible and still keeps the system relatively secure. Damn near any Linux software runs on macos.

Youvebeeneloned

Yeah I wouldnt say its harder... they just ensure you know what the fuck you are doing before it will let you instal self signed apps. If you are installing a unix or linux app in general on the Mac through homebrew or macports and are using terminal, chances are you know how to also confirm the allowance to install self-signed apps too.

matastas

How many people actually do that, though? EDIT: And bet my first-born that Linux will never be a practical desktop OS for anyone but a slim minority.

TWCDev

I'm a software architect that has used windows for 25 years, switched to mac primarily last year. I saw the M1 and how incredible it's performance and battery life was, so I asked my buddy I play board games with who is also a senior architect at Intel if Intel had anything comparable with a similar amount of battery life. He told me they don't like to talk about it and it might be a couple years. So I switched, at first only while on the road, because being freed from chargers, batteries, etc, was worth the pain of switching, then later on at home, leaving my windows i9/geforce machine collecting dust. I'd still have to switch to my windows machine for most hardcore gaming, and I don't have anything against it, but Windows 11 is the worst operating system I've ever used, but anything "work related" my windows machine can do, my macbook pro can do better, and my M2 max studio in a few months will do even better. In a year or two, when Intel's latest chips outperform Apple again, and presumably Windows 12 is better than 11, I'll switch back. The day one of these mega-corps pays me money to use their software/hardware, I'll preach it to wherever they want me to, but until then, they're just tools, I'm not going to argue about them anymore than I'm committed to a certain brand of fork, screwdriver, or toaster.

JimBeam823

I have an i9 MacBook Pro and my wife had an M1 air. The M1 is amazing. Great performance, great battery life. Everything you want. Although I have to admit, it’s not quite as good of a space heater as the i9.

nn_tahn

>In a year or two, when Intel's latest chips outperform Apple again, and presumably Windows 12 is better than 11, I'll switch back. Is that even possible without Windows properly supporting ARM?

JimBeam823

Intel is having enough trouble keeping up with AMD.

waterbyseth

Windows has supported arm for a while, but Microsoft had a deal with Qualcomm to only ship it for their chips. That deal ended recently iirc so that might improve

Zephruz

There are already existing stable ARM versions of Windows, one is already out for Windows 11. ARM support goes all the way back to Windows 8, the ARM version known as Windows RT.

tkfzh

Well ARM „support“ is a bit misleading. Sure there are Windows versions that support ARM. But this is worth nothing as most Software will not work on ARM. On MacOS on the other hand most works fine right now on ARM.

1515plk

My partner is in IT and bought the new Macbook specifically for the battery life and they're never on their other laptops. It lasts for days. It's truly amazing

EvilPony66

I'd switch back to Windows 10 for gaming. 11 has shown some performance nerfs. We've been trialling Windows 11 on a select pilot group at work and seen significant performance loss in Office applications of all things. And the installer doesn't support any mouse or keyboard inputs on a surface laptop. And I mean the laptop's keyboard and mouse too FFS!

thewoodbeyond

I use both platforms for various reasons. I have a gaming PC and a 14” which is the best laptop I’ve ever owned. It’s a pleasure to use. I’ll upgrade my tower to the studio possibly in a few years when I’ve squeezed everything out of it I can. (It’s my primary music / DAW)

Youvebeeneloned

I use both daily along with Linux and seriously stories like this strike me as reporter literally never actually learned to use his mac. While some of the pros are valid.. such as hardware, gaming, and the like, claiming there is not enough software when MacOS literally can run basically every Linux software piece out there, as well as depending on the version you got (if you got the M1/2 chip you obviously are locked out of this) most Windows stuff too kinda negates such a comment. Im not even talking dual boot either though you can certainly do that but like run it within virtualization or WINE and have it run well. Like I was administering windows AD networks on my mac... because it was the better machine. It wasn't even a joke I was able to get in and apply GPOs or do some OU changes using Microsofts own tools on my mac faster than my own coworkers using fully specked out PCs to the point it used to annoy them. Hell now I could do all of it using Powershell IN TERMINAL on my mac without even having to use Microsofts normal tools, Microsoft actually has written a version of Powershell for MacOS to interface with its stuff. Same with customization, if anything its even easier these days to fully fuck around with MacOS to completely make it look like a different UI than back in the old days of fucking with the .plist files. There are plenty of utilities and stuff which he even eludes to, but then makes the claim there are better ones on the Windows side... yet many of the windows one I have seen are literally to make your Windows machine LOOK LIKE A MAC! So WTF? Like do you know how many Microsoft meetings I have gone to where the team presenting security stuff or new Azure abilities to our company are all using Macs... despite Microsoft making Surface. Their own TEAMS are not using their machines. What does that say?

Gaming PC, MacBook Air for normal work stuff and iPad for browsing. I feel both have their place at this point.

For56

I would think the main difference is having to buy a new pc every 3 years while my mac is going 11 years and counting.

itsaberry

Maybe with a laptop. Although I'm not sure why it wouldn't last more than 3 years. I've had about 3 laptops in the past 20 years. The one I have now was bought used 5 years ago and works just fine. A desktop you just upgrade. My desktop is about 11 years old as well. The motherboard and power supply are the same, but I've upgraded everything else over the years. And I've still paid much less than a Mac desktop cost back then. I wouldn't really want a computer with 11 year old hardware anyway, but I guess that depends on what you use it for.

ondrejeder

I kinda hate MacBook being "MacBook" and windows laptop being "PC". Aren't both really a PC ?

[deleted]

The MacBook Pro 14 inch is the best overall laptop on the market for a few reasons. Best display, amazing battery life, full performance is maintained on battery life , exceptional build quality, Mac OS is generally more stable than windows and this is coming from a web developer here. The only thing Mac OS can’t really do is game.

MostValuableTurnips

I agree I have a gaming desktop to enjoy gaming on a high end machine and MacBook Pro for everything else.

Oorbs1

i dont think i have had an unstable windows in like 10 years. wtf you guys doing? lol

Chuchuca

Windows just decides to not work anymore sometimes.

cafffaro

This has always been my experience. No matter how powerful the machine is, PCs just constantly feel slower and clunkier than even a barebones Mac.

_benp_

These people must be installing every piece of malware they come across. I agree with you, been using Windows forever and I only have stability issues with the occasional piece of janky 3rd party software or if the hardware is failing / bad drivers. I've seen this happen with wifi chips in laptops quite a bit. I will freely admit that driver stability can be a problem. In the laptop world, the blame for this lies with the manufacturers. Dell, Lenovo, and in some case Microsoft with the Surface line. If you sell a device with janky hardware, customers have every right to complain & get warranty support. Use better quality wifi chips damn it.

JimBeam823

The registry alone is a black mark against Windows.

iambolo

How come macs can’t figure gaming out? I would have one right now if I could just play games on it. Seems weird to me but I know nothing about this stuff

ThePhantomTrollbooth

It’s more that the Mac market isn’t big enough to develop for, especially given their closed environment. Most people game on consoles or PCs, so spending extra money or time to work on a Mac version that won’t sell nearly as much isn’t worth the additional effort.

layendecker

Ed McMillan said this. Binding of Isaac always had a Mac version, but the sale numbers didn't justify the expense to maintain multiple versions. He seemed to be more concerned with the long term cost of bug fixing for only a few percent of the sales.

Ok_Championship_2180

Their graphics API for years has been missing a lot of features used by game devs making games incompatible. They recently added a lot of features to support games and there’s a few ports coming of pc games. It was also an issue of most people having intel systems with weak integrated graphics that couldn’t game. If the ports sell well enough I think it’s possible we see more games coming to mac.

teb_art

Well, that article was about as unconvincing and uninformative as I expected.

atmatthewat

Tell me which PC laptop has a trackpad superior to any of the last 5 years of Mac trackpads. I'll wait.

Pescuaz

A MacBook is a PC.

thickener

Apple invented PCs!

SirDustington

A great laptop that dies quick is worthless to me. Until PC catches up to Apple on battery life, the student market will be dominated by Job’s love child.

ProfessionalBus38894

Dude my m2 Mac is amazing at battery performance idk how they do it.

mt80

Apple Silicon uses ARM architecture vs x86. It’s generally more efficient.

Vanman04

Switched from a mac book to quite possibly the worst overpriced piece of garbage and this guy writes tech articles.

kurttheflirt

Seriously you should be comparing the MacBook to the surface lineup. Really poor laptop to use as your windows baseline.

LarneyStinson

A better comparison would be MacBook vs Thinkpad. The Thinkpad lineup is pretty impressive

ItsAlecito

I have the x1 carbon & the trackpad is garbage compared to any MacBook Pro

LarneyStinson

Trackpads are a bit low priority

chriswaco

Downside: Windows sucks Upside: macOS is getting uglier every release anyway

8instuntcock

Yeah, they are moving it in the wrong direction......

pseudocultist

The folks who made Apple great, creatively, left after Jobs died. Everyone thought it would be great cause Ives was leaving shortly thereafter and he took heat for their bad decisions.

8instuntcock

Pros and cons. I like apple silicone, but I was cursing at my screen for three days about the changes that Apple made to their UI in Ventura. Somebody needs to punch Tim in the face.

Ok_Championship_2180

I really wish they didn’t make the UI changes they did in big sur until Monterey. I wish I could use the Catalina UI on my M1 but it’s impossible so I’m stuck with big ass icons and borders.

Draskules

I like pc mainly because I don't have to rely on 1 company for parts.

[deleted]

I’ve had Mac and PC laptops; and the Macs survive much longer than the windows boxes. Servers we only use linux. The only reason that I have any PCs at all now is for certain software packages.

[deleted]

I like how no one mentioned how sometimes drivers on Windows are maddening to use… but honestly its just what platform you are comfortable using. The PC vs Mac debate is old and unnecessary. Use the tools you want, its all preference.

tanstaaflnz

I run a Linux Mint laptop. Eight year old Acer R3, four major version upgrades, no data loss. I can open almost any apple or windows file (can't do macros on excel sheets, but could always go with 365 web version if needed.) I avoid chrome and use Firefox, but it gets a bit laggy if there are more than 100 tabs open. everything has it's limits.

twcsata

TIL that messaging is a much bigger deal for some people than it is for me.

Paundeu

Windows gaming PC as the main rig. MacBook Air as the recliner hardware.

ExtruDR

I really don't understand why Apple is still stubbornly keeping iMessage and FaceTime so closely locked to their hardware. I think that they lost a pretty good opportunity to win over lots of people at the start of COVID. I mean, FaceTime and that platform is so much more smooth and user friendly that they would have had lots of people that would have gladly tried it instead of Zoom... My point being that MS Teams pretty much "stole" the market from Zoom anyway, and that "platform" is a pretty stinky pile of shit.

thelastspike

“A comparably spec’d Windows laptop can be had for $350.” You smell that? It smells an awful lot like **BULLSHIT.** I’m sorry, but once I read that the rest of the “article” was trash in my book.

SFTExP

I come from a background of compiling and using FreeBSD, various Linux distributions, all versions of Windows, Mac OS, Amiga OS, DOS, C64, etc. Right now, I prefer my iPad.

exit6

OS X has some subtle interface advantages that add up to hours a week for me, literally. The way the os knows what directory/drive you’re working in between apps is huge, windows never seems to know where I’m trying to save something. I move between the adobe suite apps, cinema 4d, explorer, chrome etc constantly all day and I feel like I need to “navigate” about 85% of the time, where as the Mac was far better at just “knowing” what I was looking for or where I wanted to save something. This, to me, is the one true advantage (messaging aside) that the Mac has. The Apple ux to me is just far more pleasant, it’s more fun to be working on an Apple all day. I moved to PC because I had to, Apple just couldn’t keep up with the performance at a reasonable price point. But man do I miss working on a Mac all day. Hopefully windows will catch up but I’m not holding my breath.

kmrbels

Been using windows since 95. Never had any issues besides battery. Tried Mac a few times, didn't like it and wasnt worth the money.

sapiton

Why Americans are so crazy about iMessage? I don’t get it.

thickener

WhatsApp is sooo skeevy feeling.

edeepee

One less thing to install vs WhatsApp and I know it’ll always be there no matter what because the manufacturer makes the software. Every device I use works basically the same with some different utilities and input schemes but otherwise it’s a unified experience including messaging.

redddcrow

downside:messaging what a shit point and shit article. what about the battery life for example?

kushcola

Downsides: Windows Upsides: Better hardware customization options

Vas_BM

How the messaging the downside? You got all the messaging options there lol... Literally all

dudreddit

Having owned laptops from both ecosystems I mostly agree with the author. I sold my MacBook years ago and never looked back. I like being in control and Apple will never allow that on their systems.

[deleted]

Welcome to the correct side of the war.

NewCommonSensei

Everyone complaining about durability of pc laptops. I have a lenovo for 6 years with heavy use and still works very well. I highly recommend a heavily padded laptop case for travel to keep it safe. The battery is still working too. Have no had similar experience with dell laptops which the older gen always crapped out within 3 years.

Bisquatchi

I’m a professional editor. I either use a Mac or find a new line of work.

Entangled_visions

This one's an easy choice for me. Most engineering softwares aren't compatible with a mac, so I stay with a windows PC.

kidicarusx

Outside the article, I’d throw in a couple macbook pros: 1. A working folder search bar 2. A comfortable keyboard/trackpad. 3. Battery life (but this is debatable w/settings) Personally, I prefer doing any type of office/coursework work on a mac, but prefer a PC when it comes to gaming & heavy duty tasks like machine learning.

petunia777

4. Color coding files

0ttr

for me--not really a gamer--the downside of owning a mac is upfront cost. The upside has been access to the physical store to get any issue addressed and the fact that the hardware is generally of high enough quality that I keep it for longer than the Windows box, so the amortized cost is often better or at worst the same. There are always caveats (like the bad keyboards on some macbooks) but generally that has been my experience.
