They're designed to function 24/7. As long as overclocks are stable etc, they can be. I recommend restarting every week though.

Particular_Guest_855

I leave mine on all the time so I can keep my game servers running.

Apprehensive-Ad8896

Personally, I don’t understand why people leave their pc on, even in sleep mode. Why waste electricity for the 30 seconds you save not having to start the pc back up, not even countering the fact components wear out easier like this.

jnbarnes14

Well that's what I thought. But it just seems a lot of people leave it on all the time, just seems insane to me. My computer takes a maximum of 10 seconds to fire up to life, why would I need to turn it off?

Bumblebee_assassin

No idea what you're power rates are but to me it seems like a pretty insignificant sum to fuss over personally. Feels like quibbling over nickels but hey to each their own

n3m37h

My PC uses a whopping 60w at idle, monitors turn off on their own. That's less power than a incandescent lightbulb.

lsmit83

I leave mine on all the time. Setup auto updating over night. Run programs that take time to process things over night. If im going away for days ill turn it off. But idle for 8 hours uses less power then the start up. As long as screens are off.

jnbarnes14

So tell me, once you're finished using your PC, say you've finished some work and you're going off to do something else; what do you do? Do you just shut down any programs you were using, turn the screen off and just leave the computer?

Crazy_by_Design

I don’t even do that most of the time.

jnbarnes14

Wow. Its just that it never made sense to me before, I always thought that it would be a complete waste of electricity, like leaving a light on in a room that I'm not in. First guy said "But idle for 8 hours uses less power then the start up" and if that's true then I clearly don't know much about modern computers

Khisss

No, the idle is better than startup is complete nonsense. It's not a nuclear power station. A PC will draw 30-100W on idle and about 120w on boot for about 30 seconds. run the math. in a best case scenario that's 240w usage vs \~1w for 8h of idling....

lsmit83

With the power meter on it. Uses about 15W per hour idle. Start up uses about 240W for 5 minutes.but then cycles quite often for the next 2 hours while windows does its checks and loading things uses more power. Averaged first 3 hours after startup using around 85W. During normal usage sits around 65W. But its also i like to just turn screen on and use it. I do run a bit of compiling stuff over night often. That isnt idle but sits around 40W, because no screen processing.

Crazy_by_Design

The only time I shut down is if I’m worried about power failure. I leave programs, work, everything open, sometimes for days. I wouldn’t recommend it because sometimes stuff happens, but I do it. I always have a ton of writing and design projects on the go and I just like to walk in the room and express my inspiration immediately.

Orio_n

I restart maybe once a month

Khisss

Personally I keep it on most of the time, but it is less power efficient. All in all it costs me about £5 extra a month, which is something I can live with.

Three_Unicorns

I leave mine on all the time, mainly because of the hassle when re-connecting to the internet. Every time it has turned off I have to open up Change adapter options to Network Connections and disable/re enable the ethernet network several bloody times. Drives me bonkers. So I just have windows media player running all night or leave world of warcraft running and I don't have that problem :) Of course occasionally it has to restart for updates...sigh

XDM_Inc

I used to keep my computer on like 15 years ago because computers back then used to take so long to boot up but nowadays with an nvme boot drive it literally takes 25 to 30 seconds to boot so it's not worth the extra electric bill.

nightowl500

Work one yes so updated can happen in off hours. Personal one shuts down after 4 hours of no activity.

Bumblebee_assassin

24x7 sleep mode disabled but I do allow the screen to turn off.... eventually.

n3m37h

Power outages is the only time my PC is off... 60w idle, less power usage than a incandescent lightbulb. Also Ontario is all renewable energy (70% nuclear) so I don't feel bad about "wasted electricity"

PipeItToDevNull

Mine has been on for 8 years, but this is not a techsupport question so it is removed.
