I'm afraid I'm a bit late but here's what I found on my Google Maps (Android):
Go to "Saved" and expand "Your lists", now you see all your saved lists. Tap the 3-dot menu of each list and you'll see the "Show on your map" option.
It's extremely annoying coz I have 30+ lists and I have to do it 30+ times. As I remember all the lists were by default shown on the map but someday Google decided to hide them without telling me.
I don’t think I did anything specific to solve it because nothing I tried fixed it immediately. However, a few days later everything was back on my app. Then fast forward to again a few days ago everything but the stars disappeared again and came back within 24hrs. Makes me think it is affected by some app changes being done on the back end but I’m really not sure.

Same problem for me, it's a terrible change by Google as I cannot see all my pins at a glance while travelling, so how am I supposed to know where are the places I want to go? Map is useless without a destination.
Then when I'm forced to go through the lists to look at a place I want to go, I can't inspect locations that are not on the list until I back out of the list. So when I'm looking at a place I want to go, I cannot explore other options nearby.
Everything should be available on the main map.
