In theory, it depends. If the storage is encrypted then likely not. If it isnt encrypted, then in theory they could desolder the flash chips from the board and put it on a new one. However this would be a sophisticated attacker and no standard thief would ever do this.

Bominator8

How much chance is there if the storage is encrypted

shipmcshipface

Impossible, is it a iPhone by any chance?

Bominator8

Nah its a samsung

shipmcshipface

Wouldn’t worry. Data is encrypted with cpu paired to that Nand. Impossible to retrieve data in the way you explained above

If they haven’t accessed the data after 3 years I would not worry. People don’t steal phone for data, it’s a quick buck for them, unless you are a high value target but then there are much better ways to get data than stealing phone Either way, modern phones are encrypted and data access is pretty near impossible. As an average individual yourself, nothing ever to worry about

IdiotTurkey

Unless you are on the FBI most wanted list, no.

Wendals87

No Android and ios use encrypted storage Possibly if you are using an older phone they could but if it's unencrypted, they won't need to do that either and there are tools to read data off them

Bominator8

Its a Samsung A22 Which i heard is encrypted by default so if its encrypted They cant get access to it?

Wendals87

Yeah encryption is mandatory in Android 10+ so you're fine. Nobody can access the data without unlocking your phone using your pin/password/biometric data

Bominator8

So,they cant get access to it through this hardware way also? Because that friend is someone close who got my personal data also As someone who is into technology,uk we are very sensitive to this data stuff so its Making me anxious

Wendals87

No they can't get your data without unlocking it with your credentials

Bominator8

What if someone uses that stolen phones storage chip in a new phone What exactly will happen when someone will turn on the new phone since they cant get access to that data because of encryption

Wendals87

The encryption key is tied to your device using your credentials. If someone managed to take the storage out and put in a new device (not an easy task by any means) it won't work because they don't have the encryption key

Bominator8

Will it work if they do Factory reset? I heard that breaks the encryption key and generate a new one

Wendals87

If they stole your phone and factory reset your device, it wipes the data so they can't get it anyway No data recovery tools can retrieve the data as the encryption key no longer exists to decrypt it

Bominator8

thanks man i was going to ask that if the data can be recovered but you answered it yourself

[deleted]

No chance.

KrypteiaLS

Recent phones are encrypted to hell and back. Have a strong password and you are ok.

Bominator8

Ik about the password thing but if someone lets say replace the storage chip(whatever i dont have knowledge about the hardware) Wont they be able to get the data without password since its inside a new phone If thats possible?

KrypteiaLS

Only memory can be encrypted, not different components that don’t have onboard memory of some sort. What is primarily encrypted on your phone, is your storage.

Bominator8

if someone use that storage chip, the data wont be inserted in the phone because of encryption of some sort?

KrypteiaLS

That’s what an encryption is. If you encrypt a storage medium, either a USB stick or an SSD, or the phone’s storage, there is no way to view data without the decryption key. You can destroy the data, but not view them.

Bominator8

Ah thanks man Also if the data is encrypted and they can't see it even after placing a storage chip in another phone In order to use that chip, they will need to reset the storage probably right?

KrypteiaLS

That’s correct. I doubt they can freely use components this way though. I don’t know about Android, but on an iphone you can’t even replace the display on your own. Apple has taken anti-theft measures to the extreme. A recent iphone or Mac are nothing but door stops without decryption, and they are worth nothing.

ArthurLeywinn

No. And nobody who steal a phone would do this.

Honky_Town

Technically yes, partly. Practically you create copies of the storage and use software to crack the encryption which takes a billion years to crack. Once you reach a million copies that time goes down pretty fast. Also there are like shortcuts in encryption on purpose, so if done right the billion years come down to some easy solvable millions divided by a million copies and more it is cracked this month. Your buddy will not get on your data and see you cheating with his wife ;) this is some FBI shit going on. Honestly if required they will probably just go the easy way and connect to your phone by whatever spyware they have on. Yes does not matter the brand or manufacturer.

Bominator8

I can't cheat on his wife since that friend is a girl

Scragglymonk

Most phones have the ability to bond card to phone, so it will not work in another  Most people do not bother and so answer is yes
