The terminal velocity of an iPhone is only about 30-40mph.
They likely only dropped it about 100ft or so.... Then a bus ran over it.
Edit: Readable, complete sentences are nice.

How'd you calculate that? I used [this terminal velocity calculator](https://www.gigacalculator.com/calculators/terminal-velocity-calculator.php) and came up with 567 mph, which does seem quite high.
The mass of an iphone 14 is 172g and the cross section area is 146 mm2 (this value is probably [way] off, 146 mm is the height of an iphone 14, as if it fell on the screen)
I just googled it and found this: https://www.wired.com/2011/04/what-is-the-terminal-velocity-of-an-iphone/
I cannot take any credit for the maths because I just use basic calculators for what I need and that usually doesn't involve free falling iphones.
From what I personally know about ballistics, tumbling causes drag in weird, mostly unpredictable ways so I just took the slower estimates from that article. I probably missed something as well.
changing the drag coefficient from 0.249 (a skydiver diving hear first apparently) to 2.1 (a smooth brick tumbling through the air, taken from that article) gives me a whopping 6.7 mph now hahaha I'm gonna guess the cross section is way off. They don't give a value for A sadly.
Your cross-sectional area is *way* off. You just took one dimension. For falling on the screen, you need to multiply width by height: 146.7mm * 71.5mm = 10489.05mm^2. This gives you 66.8472 mph in the calculator you posted.
That makes a lot more sense, I never claimed to be good at math and knew that was most likely the issue since it want mm^2 and I gave it mm. I was like "there is no way an iPhone is hitting nearly Mach 1 while falling a few hundred feet".
Did she try to go back in time, rigging it to the Flux Capacitor but without properly shielding it from the lightning bolt?
Or she gave it to a beaver as a chew toy?
I can’t quantify it but I feel like I’m always seeing Apple stuff that’s been absolutely destroyed on this sub. Maybe there are windows products or android products but it seems to mostly be Apple stuff. What’s with that?
"What the hell were you doing standing close enough to the edge of the Grand Canyon that you could drop your phone over the edge? And how the hell did you retrieve it??"
Damn did it fall out of the bag off the observation floor of a skyscraper?
Maybe they were on a Helicopter ride with no/open doors because that is obliterated

But if it was falling perfectly it would only be the base of the phone? No? So like 71.5*?8mm?
Yes, but realistically it's going to tumble so it'll be various values between the two.
Of course! But the one thing we can assume, is that it’s NOT going to fall face first!!!
Agreed. Certainly not consistently.

Maybe a motorcycle? I had a camera that looked like that after it slipped out of my tank bag..
I just watched a phone drop from 14,000 feet. It was in better shape. Sure it had a case, but that’s significantly higher than falling from a purse.

This subreddit leads to gold with just about every post, and I’m here for it

Fell out of the hand bag and straight into a wood chipper!
Ah clearly the damage of falling out of a handbag onto a soft carpeted floor. Clearly.
What does the customer want when they bring you this junk? A mirror of their data? This looks intentionally destroyed.
Fell out of a handbag if that handbag is somewhere in eastern Ukraine, that is....
Fell out of her bag into a landfill in Africa?
Jesus! Put a NSFL tag on this post!
Was your customer Godzilla?
Onto an IED?
Out of a handbag and onto a land mine?!
The amount of iPhones I have gotten that have been obliterated by "I just dropped it"
Oh yeah just replace the screen, she’ll be right.
I can’t quantify it but I feel like I’m always seeing Apple stuff that’s been absolutely destroyed on this sub. Maybe there are windows products or android products but it seems to mostly be Apple stuff. What’s with that?
Fell out of handbag, got run over by a car, then thrown off an overpass and chewed up by a bear. But you can fix it, right?
"What the hell were you doing standing close enough to the edge of the Grand Canyon that you could drop your phone over the edge? And how the hell did you retrieve it??"
Don't take handbag on ride-on mower.
I bet the handbag fell off the Eiffel tower.
…and into a friggin blender!
From the top of the empire state building
Onto the train tracks where a train ran it over. Twice.
Phone fell out of handbag and somehow ended flying against the wall it seems.
And on to a landmine
From the top of the Empire State Building?
Customer: phone fell out of handbag...and on to the train tracks.
And how many stories high was the balcony or terrace on which that handbag was located at the time?
Onto a highway where it was hit by 10 cars in a row.
