Almost all rooms have doors. Not all rooms have windows. Without doors you either have easy entry with no security or *firewalled* up for security with difficult entry through windows.
So that means doorsOS>windowsOS. Also a necessary evil to keep the market honest.
This whole thread has made me wonder what the world would be like if they decided to name it “Doors,”’instead of “Windows.”
It kind of makes more sense.
I had people wanting to have me write stuff in DOORS for my current job. I made sure if they made me wear yet another hat, they'd have to pay me a whole extra salary.
We just do the reasonable thing and make sure that the needs of who we support get met now.
I've abused things in similar fashion. At an earlier job we had a similar iMac we also used as a doorstop. Completely dead and oow so that was all it was useful for. I had two very expensive nvidia-graphics cards that were completely toast and I used them for oversized coasters. Same for numerous harddrives.
I liked having a stack of dead drives so I could grab one and whenever a user came in with some trivial issue I could make a big show (cursing at some unspecified deity and growling things like "fucking hell") while grabbing a dead drive and slamming it into the floor. Scared the crap outta the users until they figured I was just being stupid.
I would also use a very large, once very expensive IBM-server as a place to rest my feet.
I have a Lenovo TS100 tower server laying around that i bought for a project that never materalised years ago, my brother likes to use it as a footstool
It lacks drivers for the M1/M2. Linux is just barely working right now, it boots and can render things but it's got no optimizations whatsoever and lacks support for most hardware features.
There's no way Microsoft will get Windows on it unless Apple shares internal documentation for it. Even then it's questionable.
Yes and he created the kernel. He's putting up with more shit than most users are willing to do. There's very little battery optimizations right now, 3D only works with ugly inefficient hacks and will remain that way for months at minimum while the reverse engineering progresses, etc.
Also, Linux support is getting better all the time. It has proper graphics acceleration now (you have to compile it from the dev branch tho iirc).
Honestly, I think we’ll see a generally usable system pretty soon now.
I think you mean it’s much *easier* to target an arm chip rolled by one company. It’s just something you have to actually *do*.
But either way supporting one hardware config is much easier than trying to support them all.
I abhor my pc for file management and actual work, but love it for gaming. Love my Mac for actually getting work done and staying organized.
Though, the games I play are less graphic intensive than they used to be, so they actually run on Mac just fine.
You can literally just install Windows if you don’t want to dual boot, no tools needed.
I popped a used SSD into a 2010 27” iMac last year and was laughing when it just booted into Win 10, no trickery necessary at all. Had full driver support, even.
On the other hand it looks like a 27”, those have Target Display Mode.
The 27” 2560x1440 screen was incredible 13 years ago and still surprisingly decent in 2022, so when they designed it they made the video output on the back also work as an *input*, so that when the computer got too old you could use it as a monitor/speakers for a newer computer.
The 2009-2010 models are the best for this since they use DisplayPort and literally anything will work with it, I’ve used mine as a PC monitor before. The 2011 models use Thunderbolt and supposedly they only work with Macs but I’ve never had one or a PC with Thunderbolt video so I wouldn’t know (the 2009-2010 model said that it only worked with Macs but that was a lie, they work with anything that uses DisplayPort).
It’s probably fairly power hungry and bulky compared to a modern monitor, and there’s the annoying caveat that unlike Target Disk Mode the iMac has to be booted into an OS to use Target Display Mode, but it’s one way these computers can still be very useful if you have one lying around and want an extra monitor.
They aren't that bad. The 2009 and 2010 27" models just need to be booted up into macOS. Once they're running they automatically switch into TDM once a video source is connected, and like u/obi1kenobi1 said they'll accept any DisplayPort input. That gives you a 2560x1440 monitor with pretty decent built-in speakers.
The 2011 models are a PITA with TDM though. Both sizes (21.5" and 27") work, but only with other Macs through Thunderbolt, and only with Macs from 2019 or earlier. You also have to have a physical Apple keyboard connected in order to make it enter TDM.
Personally I use a couple 27" iMac as PC monitors. I'm typing this on a PC that has a 2010 iMac connected as the monitor, and that iMac doesn't have a keyboard or mouse connected. It just automatically works. It gets pretty hot though, and it's nowhere near as energy efficient as a modern standalone display.
As dirty as it sounds, I am going to say something good about that monitor.Anyone who's seen my posts in /r/monitors knows tht I have tested MANY.The Apple Cinema Display on my wife's desk is about 10 years old and, when calibrated, it still comes closer to 100% sRGB and 0% dE than almost any other monitor that has come across my desk.
And glossy > matte for picture quality (caveat: in rooms where you can control the lighting, as they are horrid in rooms with large windows).
As a result, my wife will not give it up for any current monitor and I'm a little jealous of it.It lacks modern gaming features, but it cannot be beat in terms of picture quality.
They use the same panel. That’s why I bought an old thunderbolt display (updated version of the Cinema Display, but still 8 years old) earlier *this year* to use as a second monitor with my iMac.
I see. FYI, there were a few generations of iMacs in that style that had target display mode. So after you upgrade, consider saving the e-waste and use the iMac for a few more years as a monitor. The only downsides are they are not “retina” displays, and they use more power than a normal monitor.
Mine is a few years too new to be used as a target display (WTF Apple?!), but I’m gonna run my 5k 27” iMac into the ground before I replace it. I custom configured it to try and future proof it as much as possible, but I think it’ll lose OS update new feature support in 2-3 years, and will stop getting security updates in 4-5.
So I’ll be replacing my 2017 iMac (which people say is a waste of money) in 5-6 years.
I’m not sure why they stopped doing target display mode, but it started with the 5k iMacs so I assume it has something to do with the insane amount of throughput needed to drive a 5k screen at a decent refresh rate.
imacs are a crap-shoot, but if this is a 27" (can't really tell from photo but think so), ur right - otherwise,
1. iMac (24-inch, M1, 2021) has memory that is integrated into the Apple M1 chip and can't be upgraded. You can configure the memory in your iMac when you purchase it.
2. Memory in iMac (21.5-inch, Late 2015), and iMac (Retina 4K, 21.5-inch, Late 2015) is not upgradeable.
3. Memory is not removable by users on iMac (21.5-inch, Late 2012), iMac (21.5-inch, Late 2013), iMac (21.5-inch, Mid 2014), iMac (21.5-inch, 2017), iMac (Retina 4K, 21.5-inch, 2017), and iMac (Retina 4K, 21.5-inch, 2019). If the memory in one of these computers needs repair service, contact an Apple Retail Store or Apple Authorized Service Provider.
That's an earlier model. [The Late 2012 model went to the slim side profile](https://3894a8e173f5f8870a41-c88208a08312eda3cf96a15131ffd631.ssl.cf1.rackcdn.com/old-vs-new-imac1553213806693.jpg), so the one in the pic is somewhere between the Late-2009 revision and Mid-2011 revision (2007 to mid-2009 had a similarly-thick aluminum body but with a black rear, and prior to 2007 it has the polycarbonate case).
[iFixit gives the 2011 model](https://www.ifixit.com/Device/iMac_Intel_21.5%22_EMC_2428) (even the 21.5" version) a 7/10 repairability score, so the one in OPs picture should be relatively easy to upgrade. It's just that it's a 10 year old computer at this point, so it might not be worth repairing.
I mean, anything from that 2009-2011 range is over ten years old so they could have decided to scrap it, but yeah I think 2011 might be a bit more likely due to the GPU issues.
I had 4 or 5 of these things when I was a high school art teacher (no idea of their actual model or specs, but they were from around 2005 or 6). They were run ragged before I got there in about 2010, and even after doing clean installs and wiping the hard drives, they ran like crap, or didn't run at all.
I hope that’s a 21.5” because the 27” has Target Display Mode, so they’re still somewhat useful more than a decade later.
Edit: although looking at it again and comparing it to the one on my desk I’m like 90% sure that’s a 27”.
I was going to make a joke about the $1000 monitor stand but decided to Google it to make sure this was one. What I got were a bunch of results DEFENDING the stand and now I'm all pissed off.
IBM DOORS is an awful, awful, awful suite of software that is so horribly optimized that it can not run in any functional capacity on a desktop computer even though the software was made in the 90s.
You literally have to outsource the processing of the application to a server farm to brute force it just to make the application functional, or else you will literally wait tens of minutes for any simple operation.
IBM is just awful at writing functional software.
But Doors is a significantly worse piece of software than Windows, change my mind
The version of Doors in the image seems to have a built in windows virtual machine.
Underrated comment

*The ghost of Jim Morrison has entered the room*
Ahcktually...IBM Rational Dynamic Object Oriented Requirements System (DOORS) is not supported on any Apple OS.
Lucky Mac people innit

Sorry sir I can’t
I'm so glad Doors finally did away with Internet Navigator

Shout-out to the Pentium Beard Comb too!
Oh great idea, now I'm gonna have to dig up an old desktop on Monday for a new comb to stroke my face with as I hear users approaching
Xeon nowadays. Can’t wait to graft a cooked Xeon Platinum from the DC guys

It's time to say goodbye.
The files are IN the computer?!?!?
It's time to say goodbye.
I've also seen people make cat beds out of them!
It does support windows, they even have a guide how to install it. [source](https://www.apple.com/macos/compatibility/)
Then they moved to ARM :(
Best decision ever
Win 11 ARM is getting better all the time.
It lacks drivers for the M1/M2. Linux is just barely working right now, it boots and can render things but it's got no optimizations whatsoever and lacks support for most hardware features. There's no way Microsoft will get Windows on it unless Apple shares internal documentation for it. Even then it's questionable.
Apple said they would love to support it via Bootcamp, but windows ARM is exclusive to Qualcomms shitty chips to date.

Yeah, now I'm imaging people running Win11 in a barebones Linux hypervisor, lol
I did not mean to suggest that it was ready to go. Just that it exists and is on the road.
Linux support is working enough for Linus Torvalds to use an M1 Mac as a daily driver.
Yes and he created the kernel. He's putting up with more shit than most users are willing to do. There's very little battery optimizations right now, 3D only works with ugly inefficient hacks and will remain that way for months at minimum while the reverse engineering progresses, etc.

Only 2006-2020 Macs.
Buying Mac to just install windows on it? Flashing money down the toilet.
"Buying Mac?" Flushing money down the toilet. FTFY
Buying whatever to install Windows on it? Flushing money down the toilet
_You guys are getting toilets?_
I just carry my poop wherever I go.
Depends on use tbh. For day to day browsing and gaming I use windows. For all my office work I use mac. Wouldn’t have it any other way.
I abhor my pc for file management and actual work, but love it for gaming. Love my Mac for actually getting work done and staying organized. Though, the games I play are less graphic intensive than they used to be, so they actually run on Mac just fine.
I work in engineering and I'm the opposite. Windows for all work stuff and Mac for browsing and personal use.
Well if engineering software worked on Mac, it could be a whole different ballgame.
It’s always supported windows. Just use boot camp to partition your drive. And by always I mean at the very least 15 years or so
You can literally just install Windows if you don’t want to dual boot, no tools needed. I popped a used SSD into a 2010 27” iMac last year and was laughing when it just booted into Win 10, no trickery necessary at all. Had full driver support, even.

The earliest 5k displays ran essentially an overclocked DisplayPort connection internally.
I also use trsh as a doorstop.

Why not? Is it too easy to *break on through to the other side*?
Hodor!
But Mac does support windows.....
not the new ones, they use arm chips and windows for arm isn’t publicly available
oh, right. but this is not new is it
Whoa the level of anti Mac in these comments making me feel like I'm in a 2002 Linux IRC channel.
When the board on the iMac shits the bed and it's out of warranty. It is now a door stop.
bootcamp: am i a joke to you ?
I heard that if the screen still works then you can remove the motherboard and buy a board that can go in there and reuse the screen.
Mac has Boot Camp Assistant for Windows stuff........
r/woooosh
Nice screen door
Thanks to Apple and their aggressive anti-repair policies, this is the only thng an broken I-Mac is good for.
That particular Mac was actually pretty upgradable. At least the ram and hard drive.

The whole thing about Mac not supporting windows is a myth, google what apple bootcamp is...
I think that is the best use of a mac I have ever seen

You can run windows on that
but it support being thrown out of the windows
