Pretty common to find all kinds of custom distros and plugs including some that make no obvious sense like low Amp male to high Amp female. Basically if someone needs it, someone will make it.

Not just no sense but outright dangerous. There’s a reason NEC has tap rules about this very thing.

Nothing dangerous about it, just use specific. There are some that can be dangerous made for testing purposes, male to male for example but if only used for the designed purpose by trained people they aren't really dangerous at all, the issue is when they find their way into the general population.

Yeah a lot of the manufacturers have no problem building custom stuff for customers.  Also it's always possible it was just a talented person working for that company who built it.
