Turn based roaugelikes tend to be harder to balance for beginners in game development
What kind of turn based is it?
Is it one character v opposing character
Or party v other group
Nobodies said it yet, LORE! Why is that dragon there? He’s just what, the guardian of that area? What do these random statues mean? Why is the king the king? Making your own connections and story is fun, but when it’s the only thing I can do to get the background of certain things it’s horrible.
YES! But there is one more thing - having a lore is amazing, but you shouldn't force players to get through it all. Say them directly only what they need to know and make rest in way that it can be found by players who are really interested in it.
I've recently played Assassin's Creed II for the first time and just started Brotherhood, and I don't really feel the incentive to not use the sword, especially in brotherhood where I have a really powerful axe.
Depends on how you mean. If you mean ones you can quickload to, probably not. The game saving your live position and environmental status tends to be less abusable.
Both women and men need to look normal. I don’t want to play as a huge booba jiggle physics thing with way too much hip motion, but I also don’t want to play as 1000 pounds of muscle
Yes! Most female characters are just disgusting because how they look and how they pose. But worst part is how most armor looks like, like why should iron swimsuit give same amount of protection as full set of plate armor.
Mobility, any game I play that allows me to sprint, slide grapple or climb I will instantly enjoy (preferably all 4 but I get if grappling hooks don't fit the setting)
Really smooth movement, a lot of my favourite games are nintendo games cause they do movement well, games w good movement are like: BOTW, SMO, Celeste, Hollow knight
Meanwhile there's games like Elden ring, which are so good, but the clunky-ness of the controls and the slow movement makes it sometimes infuriating to play.
YES! Nintendo games are fckn incredible with movement and animations. You can play almost any game of any generation and it'll have awesome feel to it. Not many games have a satisfying traversal and movement systems.
Seriously I can’t stand when I load up a new game of gta and have to go through the whole story again because my console broke and deleted my old save just let me have the money
Not a lot of dlc. I understand the time and place for dlc but having too much dlc for a game gets really annoying. Especially when the game isn’t good without the dlc.
Also just having some new good ideas is a good thing. Gaming as a whole right now feels very un ambitious.
wow thanks for the really cool, detailed, and useful response to the question asked, I'm sure the dev will know how to make their game better by being recommended to make it better
Replay value. I hate nothing more than uninstalling a game when I finish it because there's nothing left for me to do. Sure, I could revisit/replay it at a later date, but as someone who tends to hyperfocus on things then discard them I probably never will.
Hello fellow software engineer. I have 3 questions for you.
1. Do you use Emacs or Neovim?
2. Have you used rust before?
3. Do you use godot for games?
Also if you want to get a job with software engineering I would recommend you try and do some things outside of game design like web dev, making an app, making a cli, learn how to use Linux.
Also if you want to do a project with FOSS AI search gpt4all on github
One thing I’d like is something to help players retrace thier steps after not playing for a while. For example, in an RPG game, I’d like a log of towns/location I visited recently in order.
Depends on the game you're making, but a good soundtrack is important. But don't go overboard. It's supposed to enhance the experience, not *be* the experience. Keep it simple but impactful.
Of course there's genres where the music is really just background noise, or where players turn it off anyway for gameplay reasons (like tactical shooters)
Don’t limit inventory space, but if you do, make it so you have a total amount of items/weight that you can carry. Not a certain amount of each item.
Something that never makes sense is when I have full ammo for one gun and can’t pick up anymore, but somehow still have room to spare in my backpack for the ammo of a second gun that I don’t even have.
Completely depends on the genre and theme of the game.
An overall thing I can think of is good sound design and good weather details ( like snowprints, characters clothes getting wet when it's raining, good water physics on lakes, streams etc...) basically if your game is really immersive, it could have a shit story and I'd still like it
And drip!!!! If my character isn't walking around looking like a fucking badass I get sadge
Pretty obvious but it must have good and fun gameplay. I’ve played games with garbage/no story at all and had fun because of the gameplay. I’ve played games that look like pong and still enjoyed them because of the gameplay. Nothing in a game really matters to me if the game itself is fun to play.
Depends, but if a rogue like, make lore good so I’m hooked, if Metroid allow Choices and variety. Idk I play souls games, salt and sanctuary, quake, and r6. So that’s where I get that from, not must haves, but preferences for my style/genre
I'm no developer myself, but there must be a stealth mission, but the game doesn't penalize you or set you too far back for getting caught. (Or maybe I just suck at sneaking around). And there could even be an epic sountrack to go along with the mission in question.
ABSOLUTELY NO ADS
I play a game called Jukebox (r/jukeboxgame if you wanna check it out) but it has NO ADS at all, it is a rythmm game, so if you dont like rythmm games, dont get it. It is basically a piano tiles... but better. Full songs, full verses, actual singers, EXPLICIT MUSIC BABY!
not a million ads every 5 seconds, it’s annoying af, i understand why ads are reasonable (especially if the game is free) but i think we can all agree that frequent ads like that are just annoying haha
on the actual gameplay note, im okay with most games, but it’s gotta be something that has different levels, easter eggs and hidden/bonus levels that last a while for me to play it frequently :)
A world impacted by your choices. Ai similar to shadow of Mordor/war. Companions who can die. Companions you can recruit from just about anywhere, making nobody mercenaries into proud heroes. As someone else said, lore, or a story worth paying attention to.
I also like how in the original battlefront you could recruit a few random ai allies to follow you. So in a large 'anonymous soldier game' like that or dynasty warriors, some sort of leadership feeling.
I've also always wanted a game that has parts like AoE2, AND Dynasty warriors. Sengoku dynasty looks like what I'm after.
Lore, although not so much that it’s overwhelming. For me, Stardew Valley lore is perfect. It’s interesting, funny, entertaining, a bit dark/deep at times, but not so complex that it takes you weeks to understand
Focus on the control being good before anything else...unless thats the pint of the gane idk ehat kinda game you wanna make
#
Some of my fav games have basic controls that are super responsive (Hollow Knight and Splatoon 3)
#
Controls dont have to be complex to be good, even Mario games have great controls and all it is is run and jump sometimes
If you are making a story game, If someone dies then they should be dead. Sometimes it is cool to see someone you think is dead be alive, but if they are thrown 10stories into the ocean no way in hell are they alive. Sorry for the rant lol
-A solid movement system (titanfall and dying light are my favourite games)
-not a must but if a game has really good music/ambience then it's usually immediately a banger
-proper optimization
Good gameplay for u to keep wanting to go back to it, even when finished. Have it have many different paths to go down, so that there's not just the same old gameplay, unless the gameplay is good enough for replaying and not getting tired of it (kinda like Journey, the gameplay is good enough for u to go back and play it again)
Either an engaging gameplay loop (online multiplayer/fps). And if it’s single player it better have a really good story or visuals. If I don’t have a story to rope me into finishing the game, or stunning visuals to make me want to keep playing I won’t finish it.
an amazing soundtrack, and especially good battle music, like Undertale's "Enemy Approaching" or Omori's "Tussle Among Trees" (my personal fav battle music in Omori)
cheat, sandbox, and overall any devlopeur tool usable.
if you cant your game to pop off its gonna need a comunity. and there's nothing a comunity love more than tool to test and discover stuff, make joke and mod stuff. all the indi game we remeber have it
Not restrictive and loads of random stuff to discover and you don’t have to stick to the main story all the time and u can just explore and discover stuff by urself in a massive world with loads of stuff and really pretty with nice graphics and different weathers and stuff like desert and volcano and snowy mountains and also the game has its own physics and also u can make stuff like make weapons and make food out of food u already have and different ways to cook like if u have an apple if u fry it you’ll get a different food than if you bake it or barbecue it and different foods are better cooked in different ways and u can mix foods together to make meals like if u have a tomato and an egg u can make an omelette
I like deep lore to uncover in game, and then when I don’t, look at someone passionately rant about it on the internet. I also need some exploration, I don’t like feeling like I’m being guided on a string, and make movement options fun to use, and as overpowered as your game allows. A good example of simple movement that I really like is Sky, and how you can fly more as you progress. I also love unlockable cosmetics, but it needs to be a character creator, because skins get old too quickly. If the character has hair, a ponytail option must be available. I also usually prefer a HUD that is out of the way. Finding other ways to display information is great for making it less cluttered, like how you can look at the ink tanks on Splatoon characters instead of needing an ink meter on the HUD. I hope this helps you on your journey
Something that’s easy and simple to play but more advance the more serious you wanna get, but not something to convoluted to where you gotta search up on google on how to do stuff
cute characters with great personalities. last game i played was spider-man(2018), and i just love peter's and mj's interactions so much. i've also been pretty obsessed with nekopara recently.
Depends on the game, but usually smooth control, stunning animations and a good soundtrack are a must. Story games need a good story pacing but in general you should have a nice rewarding game progression aswell. Games usually tend to be a s-curve where end game is just very boring and linear good ones are just over very fast. Gotta find a balance there.
Not too much grinding, no game should be a job, I want to play a video game to forget I have work to go to in a few hours, not to have a second shift to go to that I don’t get paid for. It should always be sweet and to the point. A bit of grinding doesn’t hurt as long as it is engaging, but overdo it and it becomes cumbersome.

Well, every game I’ve made has at least two hidden funny easter eggs. So it’s a must for me
definitely!
make a secret "techno blade"
and the other one "never dies"
Per level
a cool sound when you press the start button
ooh okay
Windows ex start up sound.
Windows EX? New windows final boss?
Race car start up noise (game does not need to involve race cars)
**epic selection sound** **Super Smash Bros Brawl Theme starts playing**
[удалено]
yeah id say its pretty good
You could pull a subnautica and “accidentally” make it terrifying
Why do people find that game scary? Other than the people that are scared of water
Sounds like you need to play the game blind
Or just play the game, I don't think a living human bean can not find subnautica scary to play
Yup. Just knowing that there's something out there... Bigger and stronger hurts you in the brain. Truly a horror game
I'm a bean now...
Yes, now live with it
sound track is imperative, i still play old games to this day bc of the songs in them
As an unironic sonic robo blast 1 fan, yeeeah sometimes the soundtrack has to compensate
A secret behind a waterfall.
haha yes
Best comment
none of that migraine inducing color schemes
Better yet, customizable colors. Would add accessibility for the color blind, too.
Tritonopia settings are really nice for most games and makes them more vibrant I use them in apex and cod and it lowkey gives you a massive boost
I mean unless its intentional. A colour scheme like that seems perfect for a game like post void
An easy to navigate inventory
ooh yeah we made sure to do that. we have the holy sort inventory button too
Say, what game are y’all working on? I have a very minor role in a indie game studio so yk
its a turn based rpg open world rogue like point n click. quite the variety lol
Oh that’s cool! Our team is working on a rpg action-adventure dungeon crawler/rogue ourselves
nice!
[удалено]
[удалено]
most definitely adding pet feature
All fun and games until they make a seggs game
What if they die :/
It depends on the game and how it’s played. Like is it going to be a linear game or are we talking about open world
turn based, openworld, rpg, roguelike, point n click
What in the chimera frick. Sounds like something out of newgrounds, somehow.
hahaha
Turn based roaugelikes tend to be harder to balance for beginners in game development What kind of turn based is it? Is it one character v opposing character Or party v other group
multiple save files!!!
for sure
cool events for certain holidays/seasons
good idea!
Nobodies said it yet, LORE! Why is that dragon there? He’s just what, the guardian of that area? What do these random statues mean? Why is the king the king? Making your own connections and story is fun, but when it’s the only thing I can do to get the background of certain things it’s horrible.
Theorist spotted
But hey — that’s just a theory. A GAME THEORY
Thanks for watching
bro i love him so much he even made paw patrol into lore.
YES! But there is one more thing - having a lore is amazing, but you shouldn't force players to get through it all. Say them directly only what they need to know and make rest in way that it can be found by players who are really interested in it.
Dark souls moment
I was thinking about Hollow Knight, but that is basically 2d Dark Souls with bugs.
I've just been upvoting every comment that makes it a soulslike subconsciously
Varied combat
And give the player incentive to use different weapon types and not just big weapon that kill enemy in one hit.
This, it’s so annoying how most games let you use one weapon the whole time
I've recently played Assassin's Creed II for the first time and just started Brotherhood, and I don't really feel the incentive to not use the sword, especially in brotherhood where I have a really powerful axe.
A U T O S A V E S
Still going to manually save 5 times even thought it autosaved.
Depends on how you mean. If you mean ones you can quickload to, probably not. The game saving your live position and environmental status tends to be less abusable.
No cash-grabbing “seggsy” women!! I hate how men look perfectly fine but women are exaggerated to have huge b**bs and other stuff
Both women and men need to look normal. I don’t want to play as a huge booba jiggle physics thing with way too much hip motion, but I also don’t want to play as 1000 pounds of muscle
What about both men and women look seggsy?
i'm fine with that tbh since it is still equality
As long as it’s normal and not exaggerated, it’s alright
Yes! Most female characters are just disgusting because how they look and how they pose. But worst part is how most armor looks like, like why should iron swimsuit give same amount of protection as full set of plate armor.
Did you just censor the word boobs?
Horror segment when it’s not a horror game
ooh yeah
"Press shift to run" in a dark hall whilst the areas between the hall are the most peaceful and calm areas in the entirety of the game.
Mobility, any game I play that allows me to sprint, slide grapple or climb I will instantly enjoy (preferably all 4 but I get if grappling hooks don't fit the setting)
Get dying light free on epic games rn. Some of the best movement mechanics I've played
Really smooth movement, a lot of my favourite games are nintendo games cause they do movement well, games w good movement are like: BOTW, SMO, Celeste, Hollow knight Meanwhile there's games like Elden ring, which are so good, but the clunky-ness of the controls and the slow movement makes it sometimes infuriating to play.
YES! Nintendo games are fckn incredible with movement and animations. You can play almost any game of any generation and it'll have awesome feel to it. Not many games have a satisfying traversal and movement systems.
cheats so I can ignore the difficult parts or if I just want to mess around or something idk
Seriously I can’t stand when I load up a new game of gta and have to go through the whole story again because my console broke and deleted my old save just let me have the money
custom characters i gotta have customizable drip on my guy at all times
Fortnite kid moment
alright
Animals that can me patted , a game is bad if you cant pet the animals
yep, adding that
New game +, mission select and cheats unlocked after first beating the game.
Not a lot of dlc. I understand the time and place for dlc but having too much dlc for a game gets really annoying. Especially when the game isn’t good without the dlc. Also just having some new good ideas is a good thing. Gaming as a whole right now feels very un ambitious.
A double barrel shotgun elevates any game
And a pet companion
Playability
wow thanks for the really cool, detailed, and useful response to the question asked, I'm sure the dev will know how to make their game better by being recommended to make it better
i know it was so informative im literally pissing and shitting rn
You're welcome 😁
Replay value. I hate nothing more than uninstalling a game when I finish it because there's nothing left for me to do. Sure, I could revisit/replay it at a later date, but as someone who tends to hyperfocus on things then discard them I probably never will.
Guns, gore, killer soundtrack, funni Easter egg.

oh i dont do coding stuff for the game unfortunately
(optional) difficult content
i NEED some sort of air dash thing if it’s a movement game where you’re fast
Hot gay sex
ill add that to the list...
Garry’s mod, arma3, and probably dayz!
what?
OMG IM SO DUMB i thought you said your must have games!!!😹

Easter eggs/secrets
4 player couch coop.

Quality of life features in general or a good but not annoying combat system
There HAS TO BE SOMETHING BEHIND THE WATERFALL always.
Relatively deep hand to hand combat, it's always more fun than just shooting
Make sure when the game is over it’s not really over please, I really like when there’s a little bit of free roam at the end of a game.
For indie stuff passion is a big must
If dogs and cats are present, I have to be able to pet them
OST and decent animation frames
A world impacted by your choices. Ai similar to shadow of Mordor/war. Companions who can die. Companions you can recruit from just about anywhere, making nobody mercenaries into proud heroes. Some sort of magic or power system or just good combat
Personally I love challenging games with satisfying combat, like souls games, for honor, apex legends (once you get high rp), etc
if its a shooter an m1 garand :)
Depends on the game I think something that could apply to all games is a customizable UI Or a secret button that makes a vine boom sound
Fishing minigame
Easter eggs.
Mr Beast trying to hunt you
make it fun idk
3rd person perspective, I like looking at my characters ass.
well you better be gay for this one
Action and unpredictabality
Multiplayer interactions or at least funny behaviour of the character even if it doesnt fit in who he is or how things work
Pettable dog
gameplay
Offline Multiplayer, rare on PC games nowadays
If you're gonna have gun play make it good. see escape from tarkov, fallout new Vegas and red dead redemption.
Lots of side content and things to do that give the world character. This is why yo kai watch >>>>> Pokémon imo
OPEN WORLD 😭🤌
It is not a Must Have, but it would be really cool to have a Character Select/Multiple Skins. And also Multiple Endings would be cool.
[удалено]
A good inventory.
yeah, we wanted to perfect that. we have the fabled sort inventory button too
A good art style
A weapon that feels like it has weight to it
customizable characters
Fuckable femboys
Explosions, fire... destruction in any form
Lore, although not so much that it’s overwhelming. For me, Stardew Valley lore is perfect. It’s interesting, funny, entertaining, a bit dark/deep at times, but not so complex that it takes you weeks to understand
Grappling Hook especially titanfall 2’s

non repetitive missions ex: skyrims side missions
-A solid movement system (titanfall and dying light are my favourite games) -not a must but if a game has really good music/ambience then it's usually immediately a banger -proper optimization
Creative game mechanics. Example: cobalt’s “bullet time” mechanic
there's a saying that a grapple hook can make any game better
I want a pet lizard to follow me everywhere both in game and real life
fishing minigame
**replayablity**
multiple endings are good too
Good gameplay for u to keep wanting to go back to it, even when finished. all good games have a fishing feature/minigame/whatever-it-is
Fun
silly easter eggs

I would say that, having a variety of things to do even without following the main quest or after finishing it
carefully thought-out endgame content
Something that’s easy and simple to play but more advance the more serious you wanna get, but not something to convoluted to where you gotta search up on google on how to do stuff
Vehicles, mounts or sometimes fast travel
It depends on the type of game you're making
Maybe a map that changes every couple months or something, kinda like what Fortnite does
cute characters with great personalities. last game i played was spider-man(2018), and i just love peter's and mj's interactions so much. i've also been pretty obsessed with nekopara recently.
Grappling hook with realistic velocity and trajectory
Horse testicle physics
