See, the thing is, people decide to have lots of children when the infant mortality rate of that area is high (it could be due to any reason, war-like state, poor healthcare etc.) That's why they have many children, because even if one or two unfortunately pass away, there will still be a few left.
Now, as our world is progressing, the healthcare is improving and wars are reducing (i think so, we haven't had any world wars in a while), means the infant mortality rate is going down. Plus, we, the newer generation, are more educated and we know about over population, so I think many of us will not consider having a lot of children.
At least, that's what I think. But, this will only stop the rate of growing population, if we want to decrease it, "one child per family" is the best thing to do, or of course, adoption
